ON THE COVER DAVID BOWIE IS... Each autumn season in Chicago comes with its fair share of “must see” arts and entertainment events. But it’s hard to recall a higher level of buzz than that accompanying this week’s opening of David Bowie Is at the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 E. Chicago) on September 23. Owing in equal parts to the widespread appeal of Bowie himself as a pop culture icon, the five-decade breadth of the retrospective – which includes more than 400 objects, from handwritten lyrics and album artwork to original costumes and photography – and the exclusivity of this multimedia touring show (Chicago is its only U.S. stop), this is shaping up to be the cultural happening of 2014. As her health deteriorates, Maxine is convinced her daughter is paying Nurse Tina to “nudge” her into the grave before the new estate tax become law. So Maxine proposes a deal of her own, and the wild ride begins, delivering the audience, as the title suggests, straight to the intersection of America’s two inevitables. Taxes in April may be no laughing matter, but this darkly comedic, engaging and provocative new play suggests that they’re ripe for an examination on the stage.
