AwardWinning Views For years, thousands of visitors looking for a bird’s eye view of Chicago and its surrounding areas were content to get those jaw-dropping vistas from behind the glass of the 103rd floor of the Willis (nee: Sears) Tower. But in 2009, the folks at SKYDECK CHICAGO decided to extend those views just a bit further (both literally and figuratively) with The Ledge – a series of enclosed glass boxes jutting out from the building’s exterior 1,353 feet above the sidewalk below. Millennium Park
Presented by
Entertainment abounds at Millennium Park throughout the month of September, so come on out and catch a free concert at the spectacle of the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion; cool off with the multimedia-driven Crown Fountain; breathe in the wonderful fragrances of the beautiful Lurie Garden; find your reflection in the bean-shaped Anish Kapoor sculpture; and walk across the whimsical, steel-plated BP Pedestrian Bridge. BP Bridge: Take the long way across Columbus Drive to Daley Bicentennial Plaza via Frank Gehry’s whimsically serpentine steel creation. Chase Promenade: A beautiful tree lined walkway that spans the length of the Park. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below. Crown Fountain: These towering waterfall bookends bear digital images of actual Chicagoans. Jay Pritzker Pavilion: Architect Frank Gehry’s bold outdoor band shell, with its soaring steel ribbons and state-of-the-art canopied sound system over the lawn, is a breathtaking design. Lurie Gardens: A 2.5–acre paradise for green-loving urbanites, this collection of flora brings to life Chicago’s motto “Urbs in Horto” (City in a Garden). Wrigley Square and Millennium Monument: The Square is anchored by the Millennium Monument, a nearly full-sized replica of the original peristyle that stood in the same location between 1917 and 1953.

Game day the Chicago way! Few cities celebrated the end of the recent taffy-pull between professional football owners and players quite like Chicago, where Bears games are as much of an institution as any other major civic event. But it’s not just the games themselves that bring fans of all ages together on fall Sundays, of course – it’s the tradition and hoopla surrounding them. And few places in town capture that tailgate atmosphere better than THE FIREPLACE INN, itself something of a civic institution in the venerable Old Town neighborhood and famous for its lively bar and mouth-watering barbecued ribs. This is game day the Chicago way. 1448 N. Wells. 312/664-5264. Bring coupon on page 51 for $10 off.

Chicago’s unofficial “fifth season” gets underway as it’s time once again for Chicago Bears football at Soldier Field. Given the fact that there’s only room for about 60,000 fans in the actual stadium, the remaining hundreds of thousands throughout the area have to find places to gather and cheer. Luckily, the parking lots around the stadium are hardly the only places in town to find terrific tailgating and amped-up atmosphere. At Emerald Loop Bar & Grill, everything Irish is transformed into everything Bears on game days. In addition to the regular menu, classic bar bites and great drink options, football fans will find an array of Weekend Football Specials like $1.50 Mini Cheeseburgers, $5 for 10 Jumbo Wings from 11am to 5pm, as well as $15 Beer Buckets all day long. 216 N. Wabash. 312/263-0200.

Tongues Out, Food Lovers

Long known for their love affair with massive hunks of beef, Chicagoans can nevertheless be forgiven for possibly losing their carnivorous bearings amid the steady parade of new entrants streaming into the city’s burgeoning steakhouse market in recent years. At this point, it would take a very confident restaurateur to ride his or her cattle into this suddenly crowded arena and try to make a go of it. Leave it then to one of the city’s most enduring icons and one of its fiercest (and most successful) competitors ever to take a shot anyway, as Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse enters the filet fray in a prime spot along Michigan Avenue within the Intercontinental Hotel. Whether legendary jump shots and amazing slam dunks can translate into a winning record in the steakhouse wars is yet to be seen, but most gamblers will tell you they haven’t made a lot of money betting against #23. 505 N. Michigan Avenue, 312/321-8823.
Editor’s Choice Still undecided about what to do in Chicago? Here is one of our favorites:
Artistic Encounters If the overriding goal of any artist is to make an emotional connection with the viewer, then British sculptor and painter Mackenzie Thorpe has succeeded beyond measure. Approaching deep themes such as love and loneliness from a humanistic rather than an abstract perspective, Thorpe’s pieces have the ability to instantly connect with art lovers, which is why he has earned such a passionate worldwide following. Here in Chicago, one of the best places to find an extensive Thorpe collection is Atlas Galleries, where the family-owned showplace is set to become a champion of his work this fall. It starts with a great opportunity to check out the new Thorpe arrivals – and chat with the artist himself from 6pm-8pm – during a meet-and-greet reception on Friday, September 23 at the Atlas flagship store. 535 N. Michigan Avenue, 312/329-9330 or 800/4237635. Or stop in Atlas Galleries second location on the 6th floor of 900 N. Michigan, 312/649-0999 or 800/545-2929.
