Sept. 24 – Oct. 1, 2010 • Volume 181; Number 15

Providing a tranquil oasis against the urban backdrop of the Chicago skyline, Lincoln Park Zoo welcomes its newly created Nature Boardwalk. Built around the original South Pond, the Nature Boardwalk offers an interactive ecosystem where visitors can engage and connect with the natural world like never before. Rare migratory birds, such as the black-crowned night heron, can be spotted nesting, while turtles sun themselves and dragonflies skim the water. The Nature Boardwalk extends 14-acres and provides a haven of native trees, plants and animals that serve as the key feature behind a host of educational programming. Educators offer daily tours and talks called “Feathered Friends,” “Fishy Fun,” and “Exploring the Ecosystem,” providing hands-on opportunities for children to learn and interact with the environment. Round out your visit with a delicious meal at the historic Café Brauer. Opened weekends, the Café Brauer sits on the North end and features a contemporary eatery called the Patio. The Patio offers fresh menu items, outdoor waterside seating and cocktail bar open until 8pm. Lincoln Park Zoo is located at 2001 N. Clark. Nature Boardwalk is free, and open to the public from 6am to 11pm. Educational programming takes place during regular zoo hours. To learn more about Lincoln Park Zoo’s new natural ecosystem, please visit www.lpzoo.org or call 312/742-2000.

Given its picturesque setting along the shore of Lake Michigan and its bold, imposing skyline, it’s little wonder that many visitors to Chicago want to take home a snapshot or two of the city that really captures its magnificent combination of beauty and brawn. And while hundreds of shops around town can offer postcard shots of the city from every conceivable angle, some shoppers prefer something a little more artistic and emotional to treasure for years to come. For these folks, the many paintings and prints on display at Atlas Galleries are a great choice, as depictions of Chicago in its many lights and moods dominate the selection. Look closely at many of the fine works at Atlas – including the piece pictured here, “Evening in the Theatre District” – and you’ll notice the signature of Michael Cheney over and over throughout the gallery. Due in equal parts to keen eye for the city and its spaces and his prolific output in chronicling it all, in fact, Cheney has been named the 2010 Artist of the Year by Atlas, a designation that honors his decades of recording the power and splendor of Chicago on canvas. From the iconic buildings and monuments to the hidden corners and quiet back streets, Cheney’s work at Atlas includes some of the most well-observed views of the city one could hope to find, which is why his work has become a source of civic pride in and of itself.

Cheney will receive his Artist of the Year honor in a reception at Atlas on September 24, where visitors can meet him in person from 6pm to 8pm at Atlas Galleries 535 North Michigan Avenue location. Call 800/423-7635 for more information. Check out their second gallery space at 900 N. Michigan, Level 6.

The calendar may still show September, but you’ll have a hard time finding anyone complaining about date specifics at the venerable Chicago Brauhaus when it comes to the restaurant’s annual Oktoberfest celebration – which runs September 29th through the end of October. Taking place in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, the Brauhaus annual Oktoberfest celebration is a guaranteed good time featuring an abundance of Barvarian-style food, drink, live entertainment and dancing. The Chicago Brauhaus restaurant has served as headquarters for this month-long festival, honoring the tradition and spirit of German food and music, for over 40 years. So come on out and raise a stein of Spaten to head chef and Brauhaus owner Harry Kempf, as you feast on the robust flavors of his Oktoberfest menu, featuring traditional favorites like sauerbraten, weiner schnitzel and goulash soup. The cornerstone of any good Oktoberfest, live entertainment will be provided courtesy of the Oktoberfest Band comprised of Max, Gody and Guenter, and with Wolfgang at the keyboards. The band takes the stage at 7pm nightly. This year also features a special Oktoberfest show with Peter Hoffman and his alphorn on Wednesdays (Oct. 6, 20 & 27) and Thursdays (Oct. 7, 14, 21 & 28). Guests can get in on the entertainment as they battle it out for prizes during the yodeling contests going on throughout the fest. The Brauhaus has been a centerpiece among the Old World shops and businesses in Lincoln Square for more than four decades, helping to anchor the immigrant past of its historic neighborhood even amid numerous changes and developments throughout the years. And come September, the folks in this neighborhood can all agree that they like their leather pants short, their tuba loud, and their sausage on massive, steaming platters. Guten appétit! The Chicago Brauhaus is located at 4732 N. Lincoln Avenue. Call ahead for group reservations, 773/784-4444. Closed on Tuesdays. Take the CTA (888/YOUR-CTA) Brown Line, exit Western.

CANDIDE Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, 312/443-3800. Goodman

Theatre celebrates its 10th season with a fresh take on an enduring masterpiece–Candide, Voltaire’s effervescent, picaresque adventure, newly adapted and directed by Tony Award–winning Mary Zimmerman. Extended by popular demand, Candide chronicles, in lightening-fast progression, the story of a young man banished from home and then drafted into the Bulgarian army where he endured relentless disaster. Voltaire’s satiric genius is found in Candide’s earnest attempts to trivialize the tragedy and uphold the contention of his mentor, Dr. Pangloss; that all things happen for the best in this ‘best of all possible worlds’. Running through October 31st. Tickets range from $25-$85. More info at www.GoodmanTheatre.org.

BIG RIVER Bohemian Theatre Ensemble at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont, 773/975-8150. Based on Mark Twain’s timeless classic, the irre-

pressible Huck Finn helps his friend, Jim, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. As the two raft down the Big River, Twain uses the reflections of an uneducated 12-year-old boy in 1876 as a pointed shaft at American racism. Their adventures are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming as the always unique BoHo Theatre spins this American classic, bringing your favorite Twain characters to life. With an awardwinning score by Roger Miller, this musical tells a tale that is both familiar and, in many ways, brand new. Preview shows $18, regular run $25. More info at www.bohotheatre.org.
