26 FRIDAY

ON THE COVER OKTOBERFEST AT CHICAGO BRAUHAUS One of the year-round joys of Chicago is the diversity of its ethnic communities. But it’s not until autumn that most people truly appreciate the warmth and spirit of the city’s sizable German population, as the annual Oktoberfest celebration gets underway at the venerable Chicago Brauhaus (4732 N. Lincoln). An institution in the family-friendly Lincoln Square neighborhood on the city’s North Side, the Chicago Brauhaus has been serving up great German food and beer with a side of culture for more than four decades. The month-long Oktoberfest, however, takes the dining, drinking and dancing to another level, with more sausage, more specialty brews and more oompah music than most non-Bavarians can handle. The fun runs from 11am to 10pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 11am to midnight Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (closed Tuesdays). Call 773.484.4444, or visit chicagobrauhaus.com for more information.

Growing increasingly busier and prettier with each passing year, the CHICAGO RIVERWALK is an ideal place for pedestrians to take in the splendor of the Windy City’s shoreline, magnificent architecture and unique history. Situated on the South Bank of the Chicago River, the Riverwalk offers an assortment of lively cafes, boat cruises and activities geared toward the entire family. This newly expanded corridor takes walkers, joggers and bikers right to the edge of our famously backward-flowing manmade waterway, with plenty to see and do.

Westward Expansion With all of the great things to see and do in Chicago proper, many visitors never think to venture beyond the city limits and explore it’s hidden suburban gems. But a short trip west to the village of Oak Park deserves a spot on any visitor’s short list of potential outings. From the fascinating finds of the Ernest Hemingway Museum (200 N. Oak Park; 708.848.2222), dedicated to the town’s legendary native son, to the wonders of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio (951 Chicago; 708.848.1976), where the celebrated architect did some of his most iconic work, the streets of Oak Park are rich in history and culture. After a day of exploration, relax with a glass of wine and some live jazz at the Marion Street Cheese Market (100 S. Marion; 708.725.7200) and reflect on your newfound appreciation for the suburbs. A Decade of Discovery

Photos clockwise from top left: Crown Fountain, Cloud Gate and Lurie Garden.

For many Chicagoans, it’s hard to believe that it’s been ten whole years since MILLENNIUM PARK opened. But it’s not hard to see why it’s become such a fixture on the city’s cultural scene. From the massive digital faces of the interactive CROWN FOUNTAIN to the hordes of picturetakers gathered around the eye-catching CLOUD GATE sculpture (affectionately known as “The Bean”) to the wandering pathways cutting through the ever-changing LURIE GARDEN, this urban playground has quickly and rightly earned its place among Chicago’s favorite attractions. The passing of summer means that the crowds will be smaller and the daily schedule of activities will be a little less crowded, but that just leaves more time and space to discover the wonders of Millennium Park at one’s own pace – and that’s an opportunity to be relished.

A visit to NAVY PIER (600 E. Grand; 312.595.7437) presents a good argument for thinking of September as the fourth month of summer. Take a stroll over to the South Dock, where all of the great tour boats like SEADOG (888.636.7737; 2-for1 tickets w/coupon on pg. 29) and TALL SHIP WINDY (312.451.7200; 2-for1 tickets w/coupon on pg. 28) continue to depart on daily cruises of Lake Michigan. You can also enjoy the lake from the shoreline on a rental bike from the convenient outlet of BIKE AND ROLL CHICAGO (312.729.1000; $5 Off w/coupon on pg. 21). Of course, the BILLY GOAT TAVERN (312.670.8789) is a year-round destination for great food and fun, so head over for a “cheezborger, cheezborger... no fries-chips...no Pepsi, Coke” to cap off your great September day on Navy Pier.

The Season to Shop

Photos clockwise from top left: Designer Resale, Lotton Gallery and Iwan Ries & Co.

Tucked between the carefree summer season and the busy buy-for-others holiday season, fall is a great time to spend a little time and money on oneself. Start with a wardrobe update, building your cold-weather stockpile with discounts on some of the top brands around at DESIGNER RESALE (658 N. Dearborn; 312.587.3312). Your home could also use a little love, maybe something along the lines of a beautiful new glass sculpture from LOTTON GALLERY (900 N. Michigan; 312.664.6203). Finally, you’ll need something for those crisp autumn nights, and nothing cuts through that chilly air quite like a fine cigar or pipe from one of the city’s most historic family-run businesses, IWAN RIES & CO. (19 S. Wabash; 312.372.1306). Be sure to mention KEY Magazine to receive a FREE gift!

Stand Out Establishments

Photos clockwise from top left: India House, Chicago Chop House and Harry Caray’s 7th Inning Stretch.

Chicago’s dining scene covers the full spectrum of tastes, but sometimes it’s hard to know just where to go. The city has no shortage of wonderful Indian options, for example, but INDIA HOUSE (59 W. Grand; 312.645.9500) stands out as a favorite, particularly for its very popular lunch buffet. See ad to receive 15% off lunch and dinner buffet. The city’s culinary landscape is likewise dotted generously with steakhouses, but the historic CHICAGO CHOP HOUSE (60 W. Ontario; 312.787.7100) has been holding its own in this crowded field for almost 30 years. Speaking of ubiquity, sports bars are a dime a dozen, but there’s only one HARRY CARAY’S 7TH INNING STRETCH (835 N. Michigan, 7th Floor; 312.202.0500), which along with the adjacent Chicago Sports Museum immerses visitors in the city’s sporting history like no other place in town.
