It’s an interesting conundrum for a restaurateur. When your lively atmosphere and long-term dedication to traditional German cuisine has caused many folks to remark that “it’s always Oktoberfest” in your rollicking beer hall, what do you do when it comes time for the actual celebration of Oktoberfest? At the Chicago Brauhaus, you just take it out to the street and take it up another few notches. That’s the way they’ve been running their Bavarian blowout every autumn for the past 45 years at this longtime fixture in the ethnically historic Lincoln Square neighborhood. It’s not that the mouthwatering spaetzle and sauerbraten is all that different from any other time of the year or that the traditional oompah band is any less dedicated to turning diners into dancers – it’s just that during Oktoberfest, it seems like the whole city comes out to join arms under the tents and enjoy the party.
