The record-breaking hit JERSEY BOYS celebrates its second smash year in Chicago this month. What started as a limited engagement back in October of 2007 turned into an incredible two-year residency at the Bank of America Theatre, drawing in over a million fans. The Chicago Company will say “Bye, Bye Baby” to the Windy City on January 10, 2010. “We came to Chicago for a visit, and the Windy City became our home away from home for what will be over two years. Such conversions happen rarely in the theater and we are proud to have made Chicago home for as long as we have,” said Michael David, Producer of JERSEY BOYS. “It is breathtaking. Our profound thanks to the citizens of Chicago who have made us such welcome neighbors.” JERSEY BOYS tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. This is the story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide - all before they were thirty.
Navy Pier is full of spooky and not-toospooky happenings throughout October. For those looking for a good scare, The Fear Haunted House is ready and able to oblige. For the little ones and faint of heart, meanwhile, the Carnival of Curiosities is both free and scare-free, with sideshow-themed costumed characters supplying the stunts and laughs every weekend. And tonight and tomorrow, the evenings are capped off with FREE fireworks displays at 9pm. 600 E. Grand. For more info, 312/595-PIER.

Take a journey through the centrally located River North neighborhood to fashion your own miniature Taste of Chicago. (Pictured counterclockwise from top:) Follow Columbus’ lead and do a little discovering of your own at 1492 Tapas Bar (42 E. Superior, 312/867-1492). Grand; 312/645-9500). The wide-ranging menu here includes delicious lamb, chicken, seafood and vegetarian selections prepared in the clay tandoor oven within the glass-enclosed kitchen, providing some great theater between courses. • A few city blocks and several countries on the Asian sub-continent over, you’ll find plenty of great Thai selections at Silver Spoon (710 N. Rush; 312/944-7100). In addition to Thai favorites like Spicy Basil Leaves (chicken stir-fry with basil, chili peppers and green onion), the menu includes a wide array of sushi and sashimi options. • If a juicy steak is what you’re hankering for, Kinzie Chophouse (400 N. Wells; 312/8220191) is the place to be. This steakhouse is one of the city’s best with a 24-ounce porterhouse, 16-ounce bone-in filet and a 12-ounce dry-aged NY strip on the menu.

pie heaven by Mark Loehrke
Frankly, the arrival of National Pizza Month in Chicago warrants little more than a shrug. After all, the ceremonial designation probably carries some weight in other parts of the country – “pizza deserts” where chain outlets and substandard local fare have to suffice – but in Chicago, the birthplace of the deep dish pie, every month is pizza month, and one is likely to find several mouthwatering options on nearly every city block all throughout the year. Still, if the national celebration of this culinary phenomenon provides an opportunity to reexamine Chicago’s place in the great pizza pantheon and appreciate anew our local contributions to the art, all the better. A good place to start a National Pizza Month mini-tour is Bella Bacino (75 E. Wacker, 312/263-2350; pictured left). The Bacino name has long been synonymous in Chicago with great thin-crust and stuffed pizza, so although the broader Italian menu at this outpost of the family’s chain features a variety of pasta specialties, it should come as no surprise that the famous pies are the true stars of the show. Just to the south in the shadow of Millennium Park at Pizano’s Pizza & Pasta (61 E. Madison, 312/236-1777; pictured right), another famous Chicago pizza clan continues to ply its trade. Here it’s the Malnati family manning the ovens, continuing to perfect the authentic deep dish pizza that Rudy Malnati, Sr. helped invent back in 1943. Pizano’s also features a number of pasta options on the menu for those agnostics who choose not to observe National Pizza Month. Additional location at 864 N. State, 312/751-1766. Meanwhile, at Pizzeria Ora (545 N. LaSalle; 312/464-1872) – in the heart of the bustling River North neighborhood – both the famous Chicago stuffed and delicious thin-crust varieties share space on the menu and in diners’ hearts, while a selection of pastas and sandwiches round out the offerings. Happy National Pizza Month! And remember, here in Chicago, we’ll be doing it again next month.
