The record-breaking hit JERSEY BOYS celebrates its second smash year in Chicago this month. What started as a limited engagement back in October of 2007 turned into an incredible two-year residency at the Bank of America Theatre, drawing in over a million fans. The Chicago Company will say “Bye, Bye Baby” to the Windy City on January 10, 2010. “We came to Chicago for a visit, and the Windy City became our home away from home for what will be over two years. Such conversions happen rarely in the theater and we are proud to have made Chicago home for as long as we have,” said Michael David, Producer of JERSEY BOYS. “It is breathtaking. Nightlife in October means one thing: Chicago Brauhaus’ annual Oktoberfest celebration. Frankly, the arrival of National Pizza Month in Chicago warrants little more than a shrug. After all, the ceremonial designation probably carries some weight in other parts of the country – “pizza deserts” where chain outlets and substandard local fare have to suffice – but in Chicago, the birthplace of the deep dish pie, every month is pizza month, and one is likely to find several mouthwatering options on nearly every city block all throughout the year. Still, if the national celebration of this culinary phenomenon provides an opportunity to reexamine Chicago’s place in the great pizza pantheon and appreciate anew our local contributions to the art, all the better. A good place to start a National Pizza Month mini-tour is Bella Bacino (75 E. Wacker, 312/263-2350; pictured left). The Bacino name has long been synonymous in Chicago with great thin-crust and stuffed pizza, so although the broader Italian menu at this outpost of the family’s chain features a variety of pasta specialties, it should come as no surprise that the famous pies are the true stars of the show. Just to the south in the shadow of Millennium Park at Pizano’s Pizza & Pasta (61 E. Madison, 312/236-1777; pictured right), another famous Chicago pizza clan continues to ply its trade. Here it’s the Malnati family manning the ovens, continuing to perfect the authentic deep dish pizza that Rudy Malnati, Sr. helped invent back in 1943.
