This Week In Chicago

17 FRIDAY

ON THE COVER A NEW SWAN IS BORN Sure, the well-known Tchaikovsky score is in place and the story runs along the same lines as the original, but that’s pretty much where the familiarity ends for the magnificent new production of the venerable Swan Lake from the renowned Joffrey Ballet. Fully re-imagined to combine classical elements with a decidedly modern vision, this new conception from choreographer Christopher Wheeldon breathes stunning new life into one of ballet’s greatest love stories, in the process showcasing some of the best dancers in the world. Swan Lake is on stage this week at the Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress. Performances are Wednesday through Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 2pm and 7:30pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets ($32-$170) are available at 312.341.2310 or auditoriumtheatre.org.

Autumn in the Park

Photos clockwise from top left: Crown Fountain, Cloud Gate and Lurie Garden.

With its seemingly endless array of concerts, exhibits and crowds, many people see summer as the time of year to experience the many joys and pleasures of MILLENNIUM PARK. But this urban gem really is a year-round place of discovery, and fall is one of its most enticing seasons. The LURIE GARDEN, for example, may not be bursting forth with the same vibrant colors of the summer months, but the muted hues of autumn hold their own subtle charms. Meanwhile, the hordes of picture-takers around the popular CLOUD GATE sculpture (affectionately known as “The Bean”) may be smaller, but the stunning reflections of sky and skyscrapers are just as amazing. Likewise, the giant heads that comprise artist Jaume Plensa’s 1,004 PORTRAITS exhibit are just as imposing as ever. After all, there’s still plenty to discover in the park!

Chicago Feasts on Fall

Photos clockwise from top left: Carson’s, Chicago Brauhaus and Catch 35.

A sweatshirt or light jacket is generally enough to hold off the chill of a Chicago autumn, but warming oneself from the inside is certainly recommended as well – and the city’s hot restaurant scene offers a number of great ways to do just that. A big barbecue meal is one way to get your internal furnace going, and the massive pork chops and meaty slabs of ribs - not to mention a free appetizer with the ad on page 40 - are sure to get the job done at CARSON’S (612 N. Wells; 312.280.9200). Of course, fall is a great time to visit the CHICAGO BRAUHAUS (4732 N. Lincoln; 773.784.4444), where the ongoing Oktoberfest celebration promises even more great German food, beer and music than usual. Meanwhile, outstanding seafood is always in season at CATCH 35 (35 W. Wacker; 312.346.3500), where the freshest varieties are always on the menu.

Editor’s Choice Still undecided about what to do This Week In Chicago? Here’s one of our favorites:

Meet the Artist Finding a great work of art that really speaks to the observer is a rare enough occurrence; getting the chance to meet the artist behind the work is rarer still. But on Friday, October 17, fans of the linear expressionist work of Jean-Claude Gaugy will have a chance to shake the hand of the man behind the many impressive carved wood paintings lining the walls at Atlas Galleries. In many ways, the pairing of Gaugy and Atlas is a perfect fit. The artist, discovered as a teen by Salvador Dali, has been producing his lyrical and bold paintings for more than 40 years. Atlas, meanwhile, has been exposing Chicagoans and visitors alike to the amazing work of artists like Gaugy and others for nearly 47 years. The Jean-Claude Gaugy meet-and-greet reception will take place from 6pm to 8pm at the Atlas Galleries location at 900 N. Michigan, level 6. For more information, call 312.649.0999. 54
