ON THE COVER CHICAGO VERSES It might come as a surprise to some that a city with such a brawny, burly persona as that of Chicago would also be a place where poetry thrives. But in addition to being the home of the ferocious Bears and the hardcharging Bulls, Chicago is the proud home of Poetry magazine. So it should come as no surprise that, as this wonderful institution celebrates its 100th year, its home city is celebrating right along with it in a way that the magazine must surely appreciate: by trying to expose more people to poetry. All this month, the Chicago Loop Alliance has sponsored poetry-filled banners, planter signs, news racks, and subway entrances throughout the city along bustling State St. between Wacker and Congress. In addition, the sounds of poetry will fill the air, thanks to continuously looping audio recordings playing throughout the downtown cityscape. Lightscape: a Multisensory Experience on State St., created to look like prairie grass, feature LED lights and embedded speakers that broadcast poetry as pedestrians walk by. For more information, see chicagoloopalliance.com.

BP Bridge: Take the long way across Columbus Drive to Daley Bicentennial Plaza via Frank Gehry’s whimsically serpentine steel creation. Chase Promenade: A beautiful tree lined walkway that spans the length of the Park. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below. Always Be Prepared

If there’s one thing that can be said about Chicago weather, it’s that it can be unpredictable. One minute, it’s beautiful and warm, and the next, it’s pouring, and all you want is a sweater. Here are some tips to make sure you’re ready for all kinds of weather. Layering is important when you’re dealing with uncertain temperatures. At DESIGNER RESALE (658 N. Dearborn, 312.587.3312), find a beautiful cashmere or fleece wrap to keep you warm. A good pair of rain boots is a Chicagoan’s best friend. Stop into HANIG’S FOOTWEAR (875 N. Michigan, 312.787.6800, and other locations) for a pair of the trendy Hunter wellies in at least a dozen colors or some Sorel boots that will last you through winter. If you can’t fit all your new gear in your suitcase, stop into PATAGONIA (48 E. Walton, 312.640.5934; 1800 N. Clybourn, 312.951.0518) to pick up a new messenger or tote bag.

A Sweet October There are two major holidays in the month of Oct. celebrated in Chicago: Sweetest Day (Oct. 20) and Halloween (Oct. 31). What’s Sweetest Day, you ask? It’s a holiday primarily celebrated in the Midwest to show your significant others, friends, and family how much you love and appreciate them by buying them gifts and chocolate. But at LOVER’S LANE (955 W. Diversey, 888.744.LOVE), the holiday is pretty much completely geared toward that special man or woman in your life, with goodies such as satin and lace sleep masks, babydolls, and bustiers (or, if the person in your life is a reader, Lover’s Lane even has the Fifty Shades trilogy in stock). But if you’re here for that other Oct. holiday, the store also has costumes galore for men and women, ranging from pirates to superheroes.

Not for the Faint of Tongue

The weather may be beginning to cool down, but that doesn’t mean your food should. Chicago’s restaurants have a range of spice levels that can satisfy even the most heat seeking in your party. Start your day off with a spicy Bloody Mary from ELEVEN CITY DINER (1112 S. Wabash, 312.212.1112)—if you like it, you can even take home a bottle of their special Serious Mary Mix ($7.95). If you’re craving Mexican, order some veggie fajitas with spicy sauce or a steak burrito with salsa verde from SU CASA RESTAURANT (49 E. Ontario, 312.943-4041). Thai food can be notoriously spicy, with hot chili peppers often incorporated into dishes from papaya salad to curries. DAO THAI RESTAURANT AND NOODLE PALACE (230 E. Ohio, 312.337.0000) is a good place to get your heat fix, with dishes such as Chicken Pad Ped, a spicy chicken curry.

Ich Bin Ein Chicagoan When it comes to life at the legendary CHICAGO BRAUHAUS (4732 N. Lincoln, 773.784.4444), every day is Oktoberfest. From the steaming plates of sausages to the roaring oompah band and massive steins of beer, a traditional German party is pretty much what the place is all about. Even so, there’s still something extra special about fall, when the slight chill in the air, the colorful tent out front, and the more boisterous crowds help propel the annual “official” celebration of Oktoberfest to a whole new level—in part thanks to the copious amounts of Spaten Oktoberfest beer. Chicago Brauhaus Oktoberfest runs through Oct. 28, starting at 7pm nightly (except Mon. and Tues.).

Wine and Spirit Some nights, you just want some live music and a glass of red. There are few places cozier than REDHEAD PIANO BAR (16 W. Ontario St., 312.640.1000). With entertainment every night of the week, playing upbeat standards, pop, and rock hits, the lounge. One night, you might see Marshall Nelson, who formerly played piano with Kool and the Gang, and the next, Thomas Linsk and Lisa McClowry—a singer with a 3.5octave range. But it’s not just music that Redhead specializes in: on any given night, the bar offers various half-priced wines and special cocktails. Redhead also hosts wine classes on the third Wed. of every month. A Sep. class, for example, taught visitors about champagne and champagne cocktails. But don’t try to stop into the lounge in your ripped jeans: the dress code is business casual.

Still undecided about what to do in Chicago? Here is one of our favorites:

Art All Over

by Mark Loehrke

Given the breadth of Chicago’s arts scene, it’s nice to have an event like Chicago Artists Month to help bring it all into a little bit of perspective. Of course, there’s still pleasure to be found in simply wandering the city and discovering random galleries and installations, but this kind of dedicated program helps to steer visitors to places and areas they might not otherwise have thought to check out, and shines a much-deserved spotlight on neighborhoods that can get lost in the shuffle of such a busy scene. Here are a few highlights to take note of for the week ahead (for the full schedule, see chicagoartistsmonth.org): 20 Neighborhoods An exhibition focused on Chicago women’s individual and collective experiences and aspirations for home, family, neighborhood, community, and city. Woman Made Gallery, 685 N. Milwaukee, 312.738.0400.

Area: A Survey of Logan Square and Avondale Vicinity Artists Innovative work being produced in studios by artists from across these vibrant neighborhoods, showcasing the growing artist population in this area. Hairpin Arts Center, 2800 N. Milwaukee, 773.392.1866.

The Installation Experiment Seven accomplished Chicago artists, ranging in age from 28 to 83, display their works in seven storefronts along S. Halsted. Runs through Wed., Oct. 21. 1826-1843 S. Halsted, 312.738.8000.

Oct-Dough-Ber by Mark Loehrke

It’s easy to get caught up in the impending holiday triangle of Halloween-ThanksgivingChristmas and forget to properly celebrate National Pizza Month. But here in Chicago—the birthplace of the stuffed pie and a place that takes its pizza seriously—such an oversight simply can’t happen. It helps, of course, that there are so many great places to get a solid taste of what this city’s pizza heritage is all about. Pizano’s Pizano’s (left) offers delicious deep-dish and thin-crust pizza from the family that also launched Pizzeria Uno and Lou Malnati’s—in other words, these folks know Chicago pizza inside and out. In fact, Pizano’s thincrust pizza has been voted No. 1 in the city. Locations include 61 E. Madison, 312.236.1777; 864 N. State, 312.751.1766.

Gino’s East There’s a reason Gino’s (top right) is one of the first places people think of when the topic is “Chicago-style deep dish.” Locations include 633 N. Wells, 312.988.4200; 162 E. Superior, 312.266.3337. See coupon on page 51. Also, try some of the unique pizza flavors served at the new Gino’s East Sports Bar (521 S. Dearborn, 312.939.1818).

Pizzeria Ora This spot is a favorite in the River North neighborhood, with an excellent selection of both thin and deep-dish pies (bottom right), including the specialty Marina pie with scallops, shrimp, and squid or the El Blanco with pesto, feta, garlic, mozzarella, and sliced tomato. 545 N. LaSalle, 312.464.1872.

In Good Taste by Mark Loehrke

With the sudden explosion of pink every fall, it’s hard to avoid the fact that Oct. is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While the prevalence of the disease has made this an unfortunate annual event, the good news is that every year more and more businesses and individuals seem to be finding innovative new ways to support the cause. In Chicago, for example, several restaurants such as Italian spot in the city’s Bucktown neighborhood Club Lucky (1824 W. Wabansia, 773.227.2300) and Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse (33 W. Kinzie, 312.828.0966) have teamed up with the Lynn Sage Foundation to enlist hungry customers in its In Good Taste campaign by donating $1 from each check to breast cancer research. (For all participating restaurants, see lynnsagefoundation.org/InGoodTaste.aspx.) Gino’s East is also participating in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with its Buy a Pair, Save a Pair promotion: buy two medium deep-dish pizzas for $50, and 20% off your purchase will benefit A Silver Lining Foundation, which funds free mammograms for uninsured women and men. Available at Gino’s East’s Wells (633 N. Wells, 312.988.4200) and Superior (162 E. Superior, 312.266.3337) locations. 70
