Autumn in the Park
Photos clockwise from top left: Crown Fountain, Cloud Gate and Lurie Garden.
With its seemingly endless array of concerts, exhibits and crowds, many people see summer as the time of year to experience the many joys and pleasures of MILLENNIUM PARK. But this urban gem really is a year-round place of discovery, and fall is one of its most enticing seasons. The LURIE GARDEN, for example, may not be bursting forth with the same vibrant colors of the summer months, but the muted hues of autumn hold their own subtle charms. Meanwhile, the hordes of picture-takers around the popular CLOUD GATE sculpture (affectionately known as “The Bean”) may be smaller, but the stunning reflections of sky and skyscrapers are just as amazing. Likewise, the giant heads that comprise artist Jaume Plensa’s 1,004 PORTRAITS exhibit are just as imposing as ever. After all, there’s still plenty to discover in the park!

Chicago Feasts on Fall
Photos clockwise from top left: Carson’s, Chicago Brauhaus and Catch 35.
A sweatshirt or light jacket is generally enough to hold off the chill of a Chicago autumn, but warming oneself from the inside is certainly recommended as well – and the city’s hot restaurant scene offers a number of great ways to do just that. A big barbecue meal is one way to get your internal furnace going, and the massive pork chops and meaty slabs of ribs - not to mention a free appetizer with the ad on page 40 - are sure to get the job done at CARSON’S (612 N. Wells; 312.280.9200). Of course, fall is a great time to visit the CHICAGO BRAUHAUS (4732 N. Lincoln; 773.784.4444), where the ongoing Oktoberfest celebration promises even more great German food, beer and music than usual. Meanwhile, outstanding seafood is always in season at CATCH 35 (35 W. Wacker; 312.346.3500), where the freshest varieties are always on the menu.
