Well, there goes the neighborhood. The new musical The Addams Family takes up residency in the Loop as it makes its pre-Broadway world premiere at Chicago’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre for a limited engagement. The star-studded cast features two-time Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth as Gomez and Morticia, along with Tony Award nominees Terrence Mann as Mal Beineke, Carolee Carmello as Alice Beineke, and Kevin Chamberlin as Uncle Fester. Based on the bizarre and beloved family of characters created by legendary cartoonist Charles Addams, The Addams Family is a family portrait you’ve never seen before complete with twisted macabre and just plain weird charm. In this original story, the devilishly delightful family comes to life as Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Pugsley, Lurch, Grandmama and Wednesday are put to the test when outsiders come to dinner, hurling the brood into a night that will change the family forever. Written by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the new musical begins performances at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre before moving to the streets of New York for its official Broadway premiere.

Deep-dish pizza or classic hot dogs (no ketchup, of course) might be the first things to spring to mind when the topic of signature Chicago cuisine comes up. But for a city that grew up around its famous stockyards on the South Side, beef still carries some serious clout in these parts. Perhaps that’s why from homegrown favorites to top out-of-town chain outlets, so many world-class steakhouses have found a welcoming home here. Despite well-earned accolades for its Chicken Vesuvio and a menu full of other Italian favorites, one look at the impressive tray of raw cuts at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse (33 W. Kinzie; 312/828-0966) will quickly remind you why everything comes second to the beef in this River North mainstay – everything, that is, except perhaps the Cubs. Blocks away, meanwhile, the snug, no-nonsense room at the Kinzie Chophouse (400 N. Wells; 312/822-0191) is a throwback to the glory days of the meateaters, serving up choice cuts, massive sides, and classic martinis. Up north in Old Town, the venerable Fireplace Inn (1448 N. Wells; 312/664-5264) enjoys a solid reputation as one of the best barbecue joints in town. But man cannot – or at least should not – live on ribs alone, which is why the grills here are just as often sizzling with the finest cuts of prime beef as well. Finally, given our thriving local steak scene, Chicagoans might be expected to give a cold shoulder to an out-of-towner. But true loyalty around here means the meat comes first, civic pride second. That’s why the city has enthusiastically supported Shula’s Steak House (301 E. Water; 312/670-0788), where the thick porterhouses and juicy T-bones could make even a lifelong Bears fan raise a toast to the former Miami Dolphins coach.
