ON THE COVER MAGICAL MAYHEM Two men take on the Harry Potter series and all of its madcap characters in Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience–A Parody by Dan and Jeff. Running through Dec. 16 at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut, 800.775.2000), the show has been named a Critic’s Pick by the New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out London. Former BBC television hosts Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner “pot,” or condense, all seven books in 70 minutes of raucous fun. Looks out for many costume changes and catchy tunes--plus a real-life game of Quidditch, which the audience is invited to play according to Clarkson and Turner’s rules. Children’s movies are not the only exposure to the arts available for kids these days, as more and more theaters feature live plays and musicals aimed directly at young patrons. Such is the case this holiday season at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut, 312.977.1700), where the Emerald City Theatre Company presents its musical version of the classic fairy tale Cinderella—with a holiday bent—from Nov. 23 through Jan. 6. With a familiar story, catchy tunes, and, of course, a happy ending, this is the perfect opportunity to introduce youngsters (the show is best for kids ages 3–10) to the magic of live theater and give them a day on the town. All performances are at 10am, and tickets are $16–$22. After the curtain falls, take the kids across the street to Hershey’s Chicago (822 N. Michigan, 312.337.7711) for a hot chocolate. Light Up the Night by Ruthie Kott

The Lincoln Park Zoo (2001 N. Clark, 312.742.2000) is home to more than 1,200 animals, and, starting this weekend, it’ll also be home to some 2 million shining lights. Every holiday season for 18 years, the zoo stays open late and is decorated with strings of lights and holiday-themed displays. On Fri., Nov. 23, watch the lighting ceremony at 4:55pm, at the Kovler Sea Lion Pool. The first 1,000 visitors that night and each night thereafter receive a free pair of 3D glasses, to make the lights even more magical. Like the zoo itself, ZooLights is completely free to enjoy, and it is as educational as it is fun: see the zoo’s many species of animals, enjoy a ride on the AT&T Endangered Species Carousel, and learn about ice sculpture. You can also enjoy holiday crafts and photos with St. Nick himself in the Kovler Lion House (through Dec. 23). On the zoo’s South Lawn, see a shimmering light show choreographed to holiday music. ZooLights runs every Fri.–Sun. through Dec. 23 from 5 to 9pm. After Christmas, the zoo is open nightly from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.
