Ride in Style There are motorcycles in the River North HARLEY-DAVIDSON store (66 E. Ohio, 312.274.9666), but they aren’t for sale. “Please do not sit or drool on this motorcycle,” read the signs hanging from the bikes. If the shiny motorcycles make you drool, though, forget about the adorable bandana-ed stuffed teddy bears and Harley-themed chew toys (though your pup may drool on those too). To celebrate Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary in 2013, the store has already started selling T-shirts and sweatshirts announcing the company’s birthday. But if you are looking for a new bike, consider heading out to Harley-Davidson’s Glenview location (2929 Patriot Blvd., 866.440.6506) to see some of the newest models for sale.

Our city during the holidays is a magical place—from holiday shopping on the Magnificent Mile to horse-drawn carriage rides, from ice-skating in Millennium Park to afternoon teatime at the Drake. We are excited to share what our city has planned for you this upcoming holiday season. Check out page 6 for the biggest holiday events, page 36 for holiday plays taking the stage, and page 44 for a gift guide featuring items from some of our local shops. New this year: throughout the magazine, we’ve added QR codes, “smart” bar codes that you’ll see marked with a “Scan Me” message. Download a QR-code-reader app with your iPhone or Droid, scan the code, and you’ll be taken to an online video that brings the event to life.

AD Dilly illy of of a Tradition Tradition Stockings hanging from the fireplace. A plate of cookies for Santa. Eggnog. Some holiday phenomena can only be explained by tradition. And yet, even at their strangest, many of these quirky traditions eventually come to define the Christmas season for many folks. Little eccentricities that would make little sense at any other foregone time of year are somehow fo conclusions in Dec. Take the Pickle in the Pi Pine, for instance. A distinct holiday custom for generations of Chicagoans, the pickle ornament continues a long and storied run at the venerable Berghoff restaurant (17 W. Adams; 312.427.3170). Each year, families will come downtown to enjoy a classic meal and a few authentic German brews, and children are invited to comb through the lighted branches of the decorated tree in the Century Room to find the pickle ornament. who are lucky enough to find the pickle will be treated to a FREE root beer. It’s a Merry Christmas— German, by way of Chicago. After dinner, the Christkindlmarket at nearby Daley Plaza beckons those in search of even more European holiday tradition (50 W. Washington; 312.494.2175). Now in its 16th season, this open-air, German-style market features more re than 50 food and craft vendors, selling everything from bratwurst to blown-glass ornaments (Nov. 20–Dec. 24). Who knows? You might even find a pickle for your tree at home.
Warm Warm Sips Sips There are plenty of places for you to stay warm in Chicago, even when the weather’s chilly—malls on Michigan Ave. and museums, just to name a few. But there’s nothing like a hot chocolate, tea, or coffee to really warm you from the inside out. Here are some places to get some delicious hot drinks in Chicago’s downtown: FOR TEA Argo Tea (various locations, including 1 N. Dearborn, 16 W. Randolph, and 819 N. Rush), a chain started in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, is dedicated to this delicious, soothing hot drink. Choose one of the special tea drinks, such as the pumpkin chai, or one of 30 varieties of loose-leaf teas. Stop into the Drake hotel (140 E. Walton, 312.787.2200) every afternoon from 1 to 5pm for its Afternoon Tea. Enjoy a selection of sandwiches, pastries, and scones with fine, fresh teas such as Darjeeling and Lapsang Souchong, a rich Chinese black tea, or a caffeine-free Chamomile Citrus. Add some extra warmth to those beverages with one of the Drake’s tea cocktails.

M Macy’s acy ’s H Holiday oliday M Magic agic For its 45th year, Macy’s on State Street whimsically decorates its windows with animated characters and stories. This year, the theme is “The Magic of Christmas,” which tells the story of Macy’s history at the State Street store—for instance, you’ll see the character Uncle Mistletoe, who debuted in the store’s holiday windows in 1946, when the store was Marshall Field’s. A combination of Field’s favorite uncle and a Dickens-type character, Uncle Mistletoe was an instant hit. Go inside to see the massive Great Tree rising through multiple stories of the building’s main atrium. At 45 feet tall, the Great Tree is adorned for the first time this year with 42 LED star ornaments and 15,000 LED twinkle lights. After a good thaw and hearty meal at the seventh-floor Walnut Room, customers with kids in tow will surely want to schedule time with the big guy and his jolly old elves on the 5th floor in Macy’s SantaLand. Since 1948, Santa has visited with millions of children in the State Street store. Visit macys.com/events for updates, or call 312.781.4483 for more information and special SantaLand hours.

Fondue: melty cheese, bubbling oil, or gooey chocolate, just waiting to have breads, meats, or fruits dipped in them. Celebrate National Fun With Fondue Month this Nov. with the many dippable options in Chicago. Enjoy a full meal of fondue at THE MELTING POT (609 N. Dearborn, 312.573.0011), complete with cheese fondue, entrées, and a chocolate fondue dessert. It’s not exactly fondue, but the BERGHOFF (17 W. Adams, 312.427.3170), offers a pretzel appetizer with a creamy stout cheddar-cheese dipping sauce. Finally, LA MADIA (59 W. Grand, 312.329.0400) may specialize in thin-crust, Neopolitan-inspired pizza, but the Italian restaurant has a pizza fondue appetizer made with a cheesy tomato sauce and pizza bread that is a local favorite.

In addition to the standard pico de gallo (tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, coarsely chopped) and a 16 oz. bowl of homemade salsa with roasted tomato, tomatillo and peppers, the restaurant also serves a super-hot habanero red sauce and a more mild, Spanish-inspired veracruzana salsa. Patron’s also has a selection of guacamoles—salsa’s richer sibling—including piña with fresh pineapple and pomegranate, all made fresh to order. Up the heat with Salsa Mondays at Patron’s, where, after a delicious meal and a margarita or two, you can learn the basics of salsa dancing. See page 53 for a coupon for a 2-for-1 entrée.

Sweet Delights
Sometimes, you just need to forgo the whiskey and go for something sweet. Chicago’s bars have just what the doctor ordered. At VIVO (838 W. Randolph, 312.733.3379), the Italian restaurant that kicked off the barrage of restaurants landing in the Randolph Street Market District, they serve a sinful Chocolate Martini, with vodka and chocolate liqueurs, plus drizzled chocolate syrup (right). With the Twinkle, DOWNTOWN BAR & LOUNGE (440 N. State, 312.464.1400) makes Prosecco even sweeter with St. Germain elderflower liqueur and vodka (top left). CLUB LUCKY (1824 W. Wabansia, 773.227.2300) in the city’s Bucktown neighborhood won a local mixology contest with the Six Corner Fizz, made with dragonfruit vodka, cherry liqueur, egg white, and topped with prosecco.

Magical Music Making Elvis Presley. Johnny Cash. Jerry Lee Lewis. Carl Perkins. These men were icons of their musical genres, inviting our nation to experience music in a new way: deep down in our bones. A Glass Act by Mark Loehrke
Children’s movies are not the only exposure to the arts available for kids these days, as more and more theaters feature live plays and musicals aimed directly at young patrons. Such is the case this holiday season at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut, 312.977.1700), where the Emerald City Theatre Company presents its musical version of the classic fairy tale Cinderella—with a holiday bent—from Nov. 23 through Jan. 6. With a familiar story, catchy tunes, and, of course, a happy ending, this is the perfect opportunity to introduce youngsters (the show is best for kids ages 3–10) to the magic of live theater and give them a day on the town. All performances are at 10am, and tickets are $16–$22. After the curtain falls, take the kids across the street to Hershey’s Chicago (822 N. Michigan, 312.337.7711) for a hot chocolate. For a more substantial meal, stop into Sunny Side Up & Coffee Shoppe (42 E. Superior, 312.930.4242) for some eggs and pancakes.

Light Up the Night by Ruthie Kott
The Lincoln Park Zoo (2001 N. Clark, 312.742.2000) is home to more than 1,200 animals, and, starting this weekend, it’ll also be home to some 2 million shining lights. Every holiday season for 18 years, the zoo stays open late and is decorated with strings of lights and holiday-themed displays. On Fri., Nov. 23, watch the lighting ceremony at 4:55pm, at the Kovler Sea Lion Pool. The first 1,000 visitors that night and each night thereafter receive a free pair of 3D glasses, to make the lights even more magical. Like the zoo itself, ZooLights is completely free to enjoy, and it is as educational as it is fun: see the zoo’s many species of animals, enjoy a ride on the AT&T Endangered Species Carousel, and learn about ice sculpture. You can also enjoy holiday crafts and photos with St. Nick himself in the Kovler Lion House (through Dec. 23). On the zoo’s South Lawn, see a shimmering light show choreographed to holiday music. ZooLights runs every Fri.–Sun. through Dec. 23 from 5 to 9pm. After Christmas, the zoo is open nightly from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.
