NEW CHRISTMAS PRESENTS A more recent holiday tradition for many Loop visitors has been a trip downtown to see a show in the Downtown Theater District. But really, whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fun in that? Sure, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have seen plenty of eclectic gift ideas and fascinating art pieces from all over the world, but when the city outside the Mart boasts so much more to explore, perhaps One of a Kind should just be one of the many stops along your journey through the retail bounty of Chicago.

As the cold December winds begin to blow and the holiday season comes into view, many diners approach the table with a keen desire to be satisfied not only nutritionally, but emotionally as well. Perhaps more than any other time of year, winter is the season of comfort food – hearty, simple fare that helps nourish the soul as much as the body. While one can find all manner of exotic cuisine and innovative technique across Chicago’s multi-faceted culinary scene, it’s nice to know – comforting to know – that many restaurants are more interested in the simple pleasures of down-to-Earth, meat-and-potatoes cooking than trying to pretty up a plate. Experimentation may have its place, but sometimes you just want to walk out full – and fully ready to take on the cold. At Eleven City Diner (1112 S. Wabash; 312/212-1112), comfort comes in the form of massive portions of traditional deli favorites – from pastrami to egg salad to matzo ball soup. Speaking of deli delights, the comfort at Manny’s Coffee Shop and Deli (1141 S. Jefferson; 312/939-2855) is two-fold – first in the form of the classic corned beef sandwich, which is fulfilling in every sense of the word. No less important, however, is the great old-school vibe of the place itself, a simple, straightforward lunch counter that wouldn’t feel out of place in the same spot forty years ago – mainly because it was there forty years ago. Wabash; 312/263-0200), the comfort is mainly Irish, with stick-to-the-ribs favorites like corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips and bangers and mash dotting a menu that includes plenty of comforting drinks as well. Sink your teeth into deep-dish pizza made with your choice of toppings, homemade fettuccini and lasagna or a hearty Italian beef sandwich.
