Think kissing under the mistletoe is an odd holiday tradition? Try searching through the pine boughs of a Christmas tree to try and find the hidden Pickle in the Pine (also known as Die Weihnachtsgurke for those sticking to German) A distinct holiday custom for generations of Chicagoans, the pickle ornament continues it’s long and storied run at the venerable Berghoff Restaurant (17 W. Adams; 312.427.3170). Each year, families will come downtown to enjoy a classic German meal or one of the Berghoff’s new specialties such as the Cedar Plank Salmon along with a few craft beers. The children are invited to comb through the lighted branches of the decorated Christmas tree in the Century Room to find the elusive pickle ornament. This year, children under 12 who are lucky enough to find the pickle will be treated to a FREE mug of Berghoff hand-crafted root beer.
