Joy To The World
Dec. 31 – Jan. 7, 2010 • Volume 182; Number 3
Sneak one last peek at Christmas at The Museum of Science and Industry’s 69th annual Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light exhibit. The Museum’s 45-foot Grand Tree takes center stage in the Rotunda with more than 30,000 lights and 1,000 ornaments, and it is surrounded by more than 50 smaller trees—beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities to represent their various cultures and holiday traditions. Stroll through the trees, enjoy intermittent falling “snow” and savor the performances of various dance and choral groups on the Holiday Stage. And when you are done admiring the trees, you can take in another family favorite, Jim Henson’s Fantastic World, an exhibit which explores the amazing career and imagination of this master puppeteer, creator of the Muppets. (The Museum’s Grand Tree will be decked out in colorful puppet splendor in honor of this special temporary exhibit.) The Museum of Science and Industry is located at 57th Street and Lake Shore Dr. and is open Mon-Sat: 9:30am-4pm, Sunday 11am4pm. Open until 5:30pm Dec. 31-Jan. 2. Event is included with general admission: adults $15, seniors $14, and children 3-11 $10. FREE admission on January 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. 773/684-1414. www.msichicago.org.

From beautiful landscapes to monumental architecture to iconic sculpture, Millennium Park is truly a 21st century creation. The concert season may have come to a close, but Chicago’s favorite outdoor ice rink, the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink takes center stage all season long, so sharpen those skates and come out for a twirl. Jay Pritzker Pavilion: Architect Frank Gehry’s bold outdoor band shell, with its soaring steel ribbons is a breathtaking design tand marquee performance venue. Cloud Gate: The brilliant stainless steel curves of what has affectionately become known as “the Bean” mirrors both the skyline above and curious onlookers below.
Millennium Park can be conveniently reached by taking the CTA #3, #4, #151 and #157 buses. Call 312/742-1168 or visit www.millenniumpark.org for more information.

During his studies he signed up for one drawing class and that was all it took – he knew he had found his true calling. Many professors have guided Brasher through his journey of becoming an artist and developing his own style. As a professional, Brasher has developed a distinctive painting technique, which has evolved from a solid background in art history and literature. You can find Brasher memorizing Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” or playing Chopin on the piano to relax after a day in his studio. ONLY IN CHICAGO
A Christmastime visit to the flagship Chicago store of national retail giant Macy’s (111 N. State; 312/781-1000) is a generational tradition for many families. From the whimsically decorated holiday windows (this year’s theme is “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus”) and the towering 45-foot Great Tree in the famed Walnut Room restaurant, to a visit with the Big Guy himself in Santaland, Macy’s offers a full day’s worth of activities. Elsewhere in and around the Loop, distinctly Chicago holiday experiences abound. For a personalized postcard, head over to the steps of the Art Institute of Chicago (111 S. Michigan; 312/443-3600), where you can get a snapshot with the famous wreathed lions. Just up the street, a postcard view of the city skyline will be your backdrop as you glide across the pond with hundreds of fellow holiday skaters at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink at Millennium Park (312/742-5222). Cap your Christmas adventure in the Loop with a stop at Daley Plaza (50 W. Washington; 312/744-3315) to check out the city’s official tree, pop in on Santa, and browse the quaint tents of more than 50 traditional ethnic gift, clothing, and food vendors at the 15th Annual Christkindlmarket (312/494-2175).

New Year’s Eve 2010: from start to finish
The Works As the ancient Roman odometer gets set to flip to 2011, Chicago is gearing up for another big New Year’s Eve. Each year on December 31st, tens of thousands of locals and visitors alike descend upon the lakefront for prime viewing of Navy Pier’s annual fireworks extravaganzas. Navy Pier offers up a preliminary round of fireworks at 8:15pm, then once the clock strikes midnight, Navy Pier will again be illuminating the night sky with more fireworks. Navy Pier is located at 600 E. Grand. 312/595PIER. Afterward, regardless of musical taste, liquor preferences, and group sizes, there’s a NYE party waiting to happen around almost every corner. Now comes the hard part – deciding where to spend the big night out. That’s where we come in.
The Big Night Out Ring in 2011 with great drinks and music, a fun atmosphere, and a special Redhead at The Redhead Piano Bar (16 W Ontario; 312/640-1000). Celebrated for great martinis, cocktails, and sensational live music performances, this nightclub promises a timeless Chicago experience! The night will run you $75 dollars per chair (not including tax or twenty percent minimum gratuity) but then the total cost of the table goes towards your drink tab. Not too shabby! A complimentary champagne toast at midnight and complimentary coat check are included. And cigar aficionados are sure to enjoy the cigar lounge located at the back of the bar. Redhead carries approximately 10 brands, ranging from Arturo Fuentes to Partagas Limited Reserve. For a night that is sure to be legendary, head to Buddy Guy’s Legends (700 S. Wabash, 312/427-1190). Owned by five-time Grammy award-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Buddy Guy reminds fans why Chicago is still considered the “sweet home” of the blues. This New Year’s Eve, local talent Joanna Connor and John Primer heat up the stage for a show-stopping performance by Magic Slim and The Teardrops. Guests will also enjoy a complimentary champagne toast. For a more intimate celebration, head to the Gold Coast and duck into The BackRoom (1007 N. Rush; 312/751-2433). Here, the vibe is decidedly laid-back with live Jazz, R&B, Blues and Motown music performed live over a sea of candlelit tables for two and four. This De-

Now that you’ve given 2010 its proper send-off, there’s no better time to mull over and reflect upon some of those life-changing resolutions promised from the night before. We suggest you do so over a hearty and delicious breakfast at one of Chicago’s fine breakfast depots. In need of a little recovery? A Protein Scramble and Seriously Bloody Mary from Eleven City Diner (1112 S. Wabash, 312/212-1112) will have you back on your feet in no time. Create your own three-egg omelette or enjoy 100% all natural chicken sausage, which is locally smoked by Amylu. And don’t fret late risers, because here, breakfast is served all day. With plenty of downtown locations to choose from (1120 S. Michigan, 312/789-9655; 747 N. Wells, 312/7872277; 355 E. Ohio, 312/822-9655), YOLK offers a large selection of fresh-squeezed specialty juices, including orange, grapefruit, and strawberry-orange as well as just about every egg combination imaginable. YOLK’s Eggs Benedict has been voted the best in town, and the gooey melt-in-your-mouth toasted pecan rolls and iced cinnamon rolls are bakery fresh. No matter what time you rise, Eggsperience (35 W. Ontario, 312/870-6773), a cozy 24–hour restaurant, is open and ready to serve up sweet and savory breakfast favorites like Corned Beef Hash & Eggs, Chorizo Omelettes, and Eggsquisite Benedicts, alongside powerpacked smoothies, espresso, and chai lattes. Streeterville’s own West Egg Café (620 N Fairbanks, 312/280-8366) will be kicking off 2011 with plenty of coffee (guests get their own insulted coffee pitcher on each table), pancakes and breakfast skillets. With healthy menu options, large portions, and a great casual environment, this is just the place to recover from a late evening.

Your head will practically be in the clouds starting January 1st as the John Hancock Observatory opens the world’s highest skating rink, Skating In The Sky. The state-of-the-art “ice” rink, which is approximately 50 by 20 feet and constructed of a synthetic substance called XTRAICE, is more than 1,000 feet above The Magnificent Mile offering sky-high views of the city’s celebrated lakefront and skyline. “We are constantly looking for ways to innovate, for new ways to entertain our guests and give them a unique story to share with their friends and family. This rink is going to provide our visitors with an opportunity you just cannot get anywhere else in Chicago, or the world,” said Daniel Thomas, General Manager of the John Hancock Observatory. Disney On Ice stars, Prince Charming and Cinderella (pictured), were among the first to step on the “ice” during the event’s sneak preview. Private skating parties, bleachers for resting, and $1 skate rentals are all available for this special limited time event. Skaters can even relax with a cocktail, a great cup of coffee and a light snack at the Observatory’s Expression Café by Lavazza, located just a few strides away. The Observatory is a great place to not only see a lot, but a great place to learn a lot as well, thanks to the open air skywalk, free multimedia tour and the world’s most advanced telescope technology.
