Chicago Trolley Holiday Lights Tour Dazzling lights and holiday sights are on the docket for the Chicago Trolley Holiday Lights Tour, offered by Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Bus Co. This lightly narrated 2.5 hour tour shows the best of Chicago’s holiday sights, including The Magnificent Mile, Macy’s Holiday Windows, John Hancock Christmas Tree, Daley Plaza Christmas Tree, Millennium Park and much more. The Peninsula Hotel Sky Rink

Hit the ice at the city’s only hotel skating rink. The Peninsula Sky

Snowshoeing at Northerly Island

Give your boots a break, and strap on snowshoes or cross country skis for a “stomp” or "glide" through Northerly Island, a 91-acre peninsula located in the heart of Museum Campus.Look high and low for wildlife as you take in views of the city’s skyline. From the street corner to the shopping mall, the beginning of the Christmas season means we’ll soon be seeing the big guy himself – Santa Claus – popping up in all sorts of shapes and settings. But like most things, Chicago tends to put its own unique spin on this tradition, featuring the jolly old elf in some of the most fascinating and festive places one could ever imagine. Santa takes the 5th

Admiral Santa

Santa in the Sky

At almost 1,000 feet over the city the John Hancock Observatory has one of the most spectacular views in the city. Civic Santa

Chicago’s unofficial “official” Santa resides, not surprisingly, beneath the city’s grand Christmas tree in the Santa House in Daley Plaza. Before or after a visit with St. Nick, stroll through the authentic Christkindlmarket, a month long open air traditional German holiday market. FREE; Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; 50 W. Letters to Santa Give Santa a hand and fulfill a needy child’s wishes with a gift. A person wishing to adopt a letter to Santa can go to a participating Post Office, select a letter and provide a gift for the writer!


Season of Wonder

An out-of-this-world holiday tradition, Season of Wonder at The Adler Planetarium offers spectacular shows, seasonal programming and special events for visitors of all ages. The Winter Sky Live exhibit examines seasonal constellations, visible solar system objects and the majestic beauty of the Aurora Borealis. Step inside the World’s Largest Snow Globe, immersing guests in a virtual 70-foot snow globe featuring scenes of iconic Chicago locations. ZooLights

Located a little north of the Magnificent Mile and Chicago’s Gold Coast, the Lincoln Park Zoo transforms into a night time winter wonderland with luminous and colorful displays of more than 2 million lights. Pickle in the Pine

A German tradition for generations, Pickle in the Pine is a holiday mainstay at The Berghoff. Each year, children are invited to comb through the branches of the revered restaurant’s brightly lit tree to find a pickle ornament. Holiday Hub

A temporary winter cottage complete with festive décor and free family-friendly activities, the Holiday Hub draws shoppers and visitors in with fun-filled activities to warm the hands and heart, including a #LoopHolidays information center, story corner, arts and crafts and complimentary hot beverages. Ice Skating at Millennium Park

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Chicago’s breathtaking skyline, Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink is a perfect holiday destination for the whole family. Free and open to the public, the outdoor rink offers skate rentals for $10. New this year, free ice skating lessons will be available Fridays and Saturdays one hour before the rink opens.
