THE UN-OFFICIAL, OFFICIAL 2017 KEY WEST TOURIST GUIDE 2 D by Bil Hoebee
ear Tourists, If you’re reading this right now your probably on the throne or easily entertained... or both. I am about to share the secrets of how to get along in Key Weird that most of the locals don’t want you to know. Now, you may be asking yourself, “Why would this psycho (me) virtually hand me the keys to the city?” The answer is that although us locals take a solemn vow of silence after establishing a P.O. Box, you, the tourist, deserve to also enjoy a great Key West experience. And because I’m fairly bored. And don’t worry about me getting in trouble for revealing these secrets.
1
Who are the Locals? Although we blend nicely into the subtropical environment, a telltale sign of a true local is we all wear Hawaiian shirts! All the time! You’ll also notice the signature blown out flip-flop, the constant margarita accompaniment and, of course, the eternal search for our lost shakers of salt. (You Jimmy Buffett fans will understand). Some of us spray paint ourselves different colors and then stand still on a plastic 5-gallon bucket for money. Then some of us are pirates. Key West is the most pirate friendly place in the free world. (Somalian pirates not included.) If you get off on people dressed like pirates, and who doesn’t and its free!
18
BarTabMag.com
Restaurants. You’ve probably read in various travel guides where it says, “If you need some advice on dining, just ask the laid-back, friendly locals.” Don’t believe them. We will lie right to your sunburnt face. We want you to go crappy overpriced joints ‘cuz we all know people who work there that owe us money. And try to remember that tipping isn’t something exclusively done by fat guys trying to jump into a canoe.
3
Guide to Affordable Lodging. Any loser can go out and rent a nice hotel room, but a true southernmost adventurer will save the room money so they can afford more drinks and stripper tips. Riddle me this: Do you own an old van? Tent? Sleeping bag? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to even one of these options, you’ll be livin’ large at the rock bottom rate of - nothing. That’s right baby, NADA! For tropical beachfront lodging, simply mope around all night since it’s illegal to be on beach after dark, and sleep on the beach all day. (Important note: Steal some sunblock). Then forget those pricey hotels who advertise beachfront lodging, you’re already there... free. And for you landlubbers who prefer to stay a tad inland, stake yourself out a nice slot in one of our many shopping center parking lots. They are glad to have ya, and some now offer a VIP turndown service, free wake up calls and a continental breakfast.
4
Art Appreciation. As they say, ‘Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.’ That being said, part of the lore of our enchanted little enclave are the legends of past and present authors, poets, and artists of all kinds. There is local art available everywhere. But, will the locals tell you where to get a true interactive art experience for free. Your damn right they won’t! You’ll have to find it for yourself. Well, recently a small group of like-minded Key West ‘sculptures’ and ‘artists’ have banded together and have placed lifelike statues on our sidewalks all over town. They look like people lying down on the sidewalk in the fetal position. These scratch-and-sniff masterpieces are so lifelike sometimes you’ll swear you can smell the pee-pee. Enjoy them with your eyes and cameras only and please don’t give into the temptation of pulling out a sharpie and writing your name and date on the artworkpeople. Speaking of graffiti.
5
Graffiti. If you’d like to leave your legacy in Key West many tourists like to head on down to the ‘Southernmost Point’ marker. In a town with such a legacy of
great authors, we couldn’t possibly ask you not to express yourself in ink on this legendary landmark. And apparently you can just go to the bathroom any where u want. (If my visit last weekend was any indication). If you’d like a photo to document your visit, one of our many trained lens masters will be there to use your phone or camera to snap your piece of personnel history. Also, in the off chance that your photo person just happens to run away with your phone or camera, it’s just their little way of showing respect for your good taste in equipment. Join me next time for TOURIST GUIDE PART DEUX (that’s 2), where we will cover such little known secrets of the city such as, Transportation: scooter, bikes, electric cars, etc. and which your most likely to ‘lose’ while drunk. Free Drinks: How you can get ‘em. Drag queens, real estate and afterwards we will meet for margaritas. I’ll be the one with in the Hawaiian shirt, broken flipflops and bad liver. Peace! Bill Hoebee (Important Note: I hate that I have to say this, but that was sarcasm. Locals do read this magazine. In this politically correct world this disclaimer is necessary, I think. Whatever.) 19

s RUM RUNNER: Born In the Key by David L. Sloan
ould you create an iconic drink? Many have tried – most have failed. Combining a series of liquids is simple. Making it taste good takes luck & skill. Creating something so fantastic that it takes the Caribbean by storm requires luck, skill, & a hefty dose of Florida Keys magic. So went the birth of the Rum Runner.
C
Islamorada is a village of islands that marks the halfway point between Key West & the mainland. It is known as the sport fishing capital of the world, but like the bumper stickers say about many Keys, it is a quaint drinking town with a big fishing problem. Henry Flagler made it viable with his railroad. The Hapi Hula Hut made it drinkable with their cocktails. They opened their doors in 1969 on grounds that would soon be the legendary Holiday Isle Resort. Holiday Isle Resort helped put Islamorada on the map, & would later be a believed location of the Beach Boys’ Kokomo. By 1971, the Hapi Hula Hut had changed her name to “The Tiki Bar,” & it was shortly after this that John Ebert began working 24
there. John became known as “Tiki John” & had no problem developing a regular following of locals. As the legend goes, it was 1972 when the bar owner told Tiki John that he needed to clear out some of the old inventory to make room for new product. Accepting the challenge, John combined blackberry brandy, banana liqueur, 151 rum, brown sugar & Key lime juice. The ingredients were frozen in a blender & served in a 12 ounce Collins glass. By all accounts, the drink was a hit. The recipe changed, according to some, when John ran out of sugar & needed a quick replacement. Others say he wanted to make the color of the drink more appealing. Either way, Grenadine replaced brown sugar & has been a staple ingredient to this day. Named after the people who smuggled rum into the Keys during the days of prohibition, the Rum Runner became a favorite at the bar. Eventually it was served in plastic glasses that had the recipe printed on them. As the glasses traveled,
so did the drink’s reputation. Before long it was a staple drink across the Caribbean. Today you would be hard-pressed to find a bar that could not serve up a Rum Runner. It has joined the ranks of the Martini, The Long Island Iced Tea & the Cuba Libre. But no Rum Runner, no matter how it is served, will ever taste so sweet as those served where the drink was born. Right here in the Florida Keys. Cheers. Tiki John’s Rum Runner • 7/8 oz. Blackberry Brandy • 7/8 oz. Banana Liqueur • 3/4 oz. 151 Rum • 5/8 oz. Grenadine • 1 ½ oz. Lime Juice Freeze in blender & serve in 12 oz. Collins glass. David Sloan is an author & ghost hunter. Lyndsey Varvatos @ 801 Bourbon Bar, 801 Duval
Full name, age, favorite color?
Lyndsey Christine Varvatos, I am 31, & my favorite color is blue. When did you first end up in Florida?
Bar Tender Profile
I went to college in Tampa in 2004. I came down to Key West on vacation in 2009 & then moved down a month later. What did you study in college?
I studied Criminology. I was the animal control officer for The Florida Keys SPCA for two years when I moved here, so I used it a little bit. Who’s easier to deal with - drunk customers or scared animals visiting the vet?
Scared animals [laughs] or aggressive dogs. When did you leave Key West?
I left November of 2016. I wound up in St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. How did the Virgin Islands fair through the hurricanes?
It’s completely decimated. 85% of the homes are demolished. They don’t believe they’ll be able to restore power before Christmas & it’s basically apocalyptic looking at the moment. Why do you think there’s been a complete lack of coverage about this?
Because Florida was affected with however many millions of people. Texas was already a priority & then Puerto Rico got taken out with another 3 million Americans. Now California’s on fire & the 150,000 citizens that live in the U.S. Virgin Islands just aren’t enough people to really get attention, unfortunately.
Do you know if there’s any way for people to help the residents there?
Absolutely. There are several different relief funds going. My boyfriend spearheaded the VirginIslandRelief.org fund, where you can make donations. They’ve already delivered 400,000 pounds of supplies. At this point they’re trying to do monetary donations, which they will then put directly into the economy of the USVI. The relief fund was started by four locals, so there’s no jargon going on there. They know where they’re going to use it & what they’re going to do with it. Have you been naughty or nice this year?
Always naughty.
How long are you planning to be in Key West?
I don’t really know. We’re still are going day by day. But I’m going to guess at least the next 6 months & we’ll go from there. You can catch Lyndsey behind the bar at 801 Bourbon, 801 Duval St & you also may spot her ‘guest’ bartending around town. BarTabMag.com

Damian DeAngelis
@ First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery, 301 Whitehead Ln Bagatelle, 115 Duval & nine one five, 915 Duval Full name, age, sign?
Damian Maxwell DeAngelis, 35-years-old, Cancer. How did you make your way down to Key West?
I jumped in an RV with 3 other best friends & made it down to Key West & was only supposed to be a 2 week trip, turned into 4 months, which turned into 15 years. How about a brief Key West work history?
My buddy got a job waiting tables, coming home with cash, & I needed money to hit up the bars. So I went & got my first restaurant job ever at Kelly’s Caribbean. Kelly’s at the time was owned by the same ownership as Duval Beach Club [Southernmost Beach Cafe]. I eventually went up to management at the Beach Club & after hurricane Wilma I got the position of General Manager. With 3 restaurants, when is the last time you cooked at home?
We actually did last week, but before that, it’s probably been a year. [laughs] What’s your favorite menu item at each location?
I would say at First Flight, Chef Zach knocks it out of the park with the wings. He confits the wings for six hours. Then he pulls them out, chills them overnight & then we re-fire them. They’re amazing. 915’s gotta be the homemade pastas. Ravioli’s. We have one of our sous chef’s, Arnaldo, he comes in every morning & preps, & hand rolls our pastas. & at Bagatelle, I would have to say our mussels.
How did you find out the truth about Santa?
I was about 10-years-old & I ended up getting this used four wheeler, that my dad got from a friend. It was under a blanket & when I asked my dad, ‘Why is the four wheeler dirty?’ he said, “That’s because Santa had to drive it all the way here from the North Pole. Of course it’s going to get dirty.” & I was like, “Yeah, sure, I don’t know about that.” [laughs] What can we can expect in the next year at First Flight?
We’re always changing things up. We’re now open for lunch, so from 11am till midnight, with the same menu. I would say, just keep coming in, keep checking us out. Fresh cocktails all the time, always changing that up. We’re playing around with the idea of a brunch, like a Sunday brunch. But that’ll probably roll out after New Year. Damian DeAngelis is the co-owner of First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery, 301 Whitehead St, Bagatelle, 115 Duval St & nine one five, 915 Duval St. BarTabMag.com

Sasha Coxxx @ 801 Cabaret, 801 Duval Full name, originally from, years performing?
My name is Dominique Lee Brown. I’m originally from Cape Cod, MA, about 10 years. Tell us a little bit about how you got into doing drag.
I’ve been in my transition since I was 14, & probably 25 I started doing entertaining, doing drag & all that stuff. Where did you get your start?
Hollywood, FL. That was the first cabaret that I worked at called Trixie’s & the owner ended up dying so I stopped for a while & then I just started back last year. What are you known for in your performances?
Beyonce. I’m the Key West Beyonce. [laughs] Do you sing or do you lip sync?
Both. I sing out loud & it’s because I feel that when I do that the emotion conveys a little bit more than lip singing. Because, if I lip sing, I’ll forget about the lip singing part & just be into the moves, so I sing out loud. How did your family react to Sasha?
I think they actually enjoy Sasha. I’ve always been an entertainer, whether it’s at a BBQ with all my uncles & aunts for a dollar [laughs] & they let me do the show & perform & rap. How do you arrive to a party, always on time or fashionably late?
If I’m throwing the party, I’m always on time. I’m always on time. 34
BarTabMag.com
How much time does it take you to get ready for the show?
When I first started, I would come in at 5pm & would take extra time to get ready, but I’m not a drag queen, I’m transgender. So, most drag queens are painting their face to look like a woman, & I live as a woman, so now I don’t put extra makeup on. It usually takes me like an hour. What can people expect when they come to the 801 show?
I thrive on breaking the ice with the audience because I know sometimes it’s peoples’ first time coming to a drag show & it can be intimidating or they might be nervous. So, when I host I come up 15 minutes early & I try to go around, ask everyone where they’re from & make them comfortable. But it’s nerve wracking for me, because we don’t know how the audience is going to react. Any other shout outs or plugs?
‘Hi, Sushi,’ [laughs] Sushi Deja, for letting me work here & One Human Family, honey. See Sasha Coxxx perform at 801 Cabaret, 801 Duval St Fridays at 9p & Saturdays-Mondays at 11p.

Andrew Duhon Trio
photoG Michael Mantese
@AndrewDuhonMusic / AndrewDuhon.com What’s your full name, age?
Andrew Duhon. I’m 32 years old. Native of New Orleans or an implant?
I’m native New Orleans. I grew up in Metairie, which is the suburb, but I live five minutes from the city now in mid-city. Have you ever lived anywhere else?
I lived in Baton Rouge for college. & since college I’ve just been touring, so I haven’t really had a chance to try to uproot myself because it feels like I’m away from New Orleans more than I’m there. Nashville has its reasons, in terms of the craft of songwriting. I’ve been making it to Nashville about once a month to go bounce songs off of colleagues & do the co-writing thing, but at the moment I think New Orleans offers the kind of inspiration & a city that feels very alive in its art & it’s soul. Do you co-write for other people or do you try to keep your songs for yourself?
The co-writing thing is fairly new. At the moment I’m still selfish & egotistical enough to think that when I make a record I would love it to say on the back, ‘All songs written by Andrew Duhon.’ So far they have, but I’m realizing more & more, the more chords you learn, if you’re not just playing with three cowboy chords, you have more possibilities. I think at the very least bouncing songs off of other writing colleagues has been a new addition to writing. Really taking to heart the opinions of my trusted colleagues is something that is the number one reason why I’m going to Nashville lately. 36
Maxwell Zemanovic [left], Myles Weeks, Andrew Duhon [right] When did you first pick up a guitar?
It wasn’t until high school. I was playing baseball & I thought it wasn’t necessarily going to be my dream for the rest of my life to play ball, but it was certainly something I wanted to do in college. Eventually, I realized that my shoulder had a little something called posterior hyperlaxity which just meant that it wasn’t meant for pitching for much longer. When I realized that it wouldn’t be sports that I was playing in college to get the girls, I would have to do something else, I picked up a guitar. Nah [laughs]. But in truth it was something I always wanted to do, & now that the baseball hobby was going away, the guitar hobby made sense. What was the first song you wrote? Is it still floating around or is it long gone at this point?
I remember the notebook that I wrote it in. I remember that it was 3 or 4 chords. There was a G, there was an A minor. [laughs] I don’t remember what it was about. I’m certain
that it wasn’t good, but I remember the feeling of completion. I remember that after it was complete, somehow it was tactile. Somehow I could cup my hands & almost hold it. There was this song that existed, & before I’d written it, it didn’t exist. & I’m sure that that was powerful to me. In a digital age are you still pro-albums, as opposed to distributing single-orientated songs?
Yeah. I don’t think you get a true snap shot of what a band is or where a band is when you don’t put out a collection of songs that’s at least 5 or 6 songs long. & if it’s that short, it better be the right 5 or 6 songs, because that still feels like less than a full picture of what a band is. & when it comes to the digital age, as you’re talking about, you don’t have a ton of time to catch people’s attention. & you might think that that’s a good reason to release singles, but I think it’s a good reason to make sure that the thought is fully presented. & I think music lovers will listen to a full record, & people still know what that means, whether they grew up in the album age or not. How is the new album shaping up?
The new album is recorded & mastered. In fact, I got the masters just a couple of days ago, but plenty more work to do. Still need artwork & a title. Then there’s the lead in promotion. All a part of the game I guess. I expect to release this thing sometime early next year. What can we expect from this album?
I think the biggest difference between this record in past records is that I’ve had a chance to play on the road with the same 2 guys going on 4-years now. Generally, I’d write songs, bring them to the studio with hired guns, session players who were always great, but never had as much insight into the songs or influence in the musical direction of those songs. This New record is still a collection of songs I wrote, but this time they were musically influence by 2 of the best musicians I’ve ever played with & have been privileged to share the road with. I think that kind of mutual trust to push & pull within the songwriting process itself is hard to come by. I think it’s yielded the boldest music I’ve been able to make. The Andrew Duhon Trio will be at The Green Parrot, 601 Whitehead St, Wed & Thurs, Dec 6 & 7 @ 5:30p & 9p & the Smokin’ Tuna, 4 Charles St, Fri-Sun, Dec 8-10 5p. BarTabMag.com

by Leigh Pujado
“Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a a dog, it’s too dark to read.” - Groucho Marx Forget about Oprah’s Book Club! Why not join Leigh Pujado’s Key West Reader Book Club. Here is this season’s reading list: ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Stock Island’ by Fester Addams Science Fiction meets the Jimmy Buffett LLC lifestyle! Addams answers the Ultimate Questions of Life….namely who has the coldest beer on Stock Island. This whirlwind romp from Safe Harbor to Hurricane Hole gets two hitchhiking thumbs up! ‘A Moveable Beast’ by Ernest Lee-Lopez The latest memoir from the Keys’ former chicken catcher and bestselling author of “To Kill a Fucking Bird,” comes this true story of Key West’s most sought after iguana wrangler. It’s Jack Hanna meets The Cocaine Cowboys. Rated ‘E’ for lizard violence and harsh language. ‘A Tale of Two Kitties’ by Charles Kittens She was a privileged, debutante polydactyl cat from the Hemingway House. He was a rough and tumble alley cat living on the wrong side of White Street. Their worlds were separated by class, socioeconomics, and an invisible Old Town / New Town boundary, yet nothing could keep these two cats apart. Praised by “The Citizen” as “A modern day feline ‘Romeo & Juliet’,” Mr. Kitten’s novel is a must read for Old Towners and New Towners alike. 52
'The Five People You Meet in Irish Kevin’s' by Mitch Albom From the beloved “Tuesdays With Morrie” author comes this eye-opening, inspirational story about a heroic, middle aged tourist who meets five influential people at Irish Kevin’s. Albom drives home that sometimes wisdom can come packaged in the form of a bar floozy or even a drunk spring breaker.” Patrick Lonergan from the “Truman Avenue Literary Review” raves, “The Five People You Meet in Irish Kevin’s’ is a revelation! Two thumbs up from the Brotherman!” 'Lord of the Fries' from Fodor’s Travel Guides A comprehensive guide to the best french fries and fried foods in the Keys. Really, that’s all it’s about. Needless to say, it’s a quick read. Seriously, this piece of crap is even thinner than BarTab Magazine! 'Brave New Conch World' by H. Bethel If “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Blade Runner” had a baby, it would be this futuristic tale of a utopian Key West as only Conch-y Ole’ Bethel could envision. Tourism has been eliminated, and only bloodline Conchs hold positions of power. Former Key West Mayor Morgan McPherson raves, “I liked it almost as much as ‘Green Eggs and Ham!’” 'Two Thousand Eighty-Four' by David Sloan An Orwellian style allegory imagines what would happen to the future Keys if tourism were eliminated and only bloodline Conchs held positions of power. In this dystopian Keys world, thought-control drugs have been added to the beer supply and Sloan warns, “Big Bubba is watching you!” Margaret Romero says, “This book is why I ran for City Commission.” BarTabMag.com

'Love in the Time of Chlamydia' by Gabriel Venereal-Marquez Tinder brought them together, but the fire of an STD tore them apart. A rare piece of fiction chronicling a love that spans three whole weeks, and all the free clinics, clinical psychologists, and antibiotics which that love dramatically entails. Four-out-of-seven Key West bartenders say Venereal-Marquez’s love story is a definite “right swipe.” 'Eat, Drink, Hug' by Melissa Gilbert Travel blogger and former child star, Gilbert, embarks on a journey to Key West where she spends 365 consecutive days attending happy hours at local watering holes. Sumptuous descriptions of half priced appetizers come alive on the pages, as do the grand personalities behind the bar. With “Eat, Drink, Hug,” you get a two-for-one deal: The One Human Family experience and a heck of a good time. 'Islands in the Scheme' by Elwood Hemingway From the great-greatgrandnephew of El Papa comes this debut novel about a successful Florida Keys real estate developer who sells his soul for the almighty dollar and lives to 54

regret his actions. “Islands in the Scheme” is an extreme twist on how money, even numerous offshore accounts chock full of it, doesn’t buy happiness. 'I Know Why the Caged Turd Sings' by Carl Hiaasen Investigative journalist and bestselling author Hiaasen shines a spot light on some of Monroe County’s most notorious criminals and their surprising musical life behind bars. Through hours of interviews, he uncovers the singers and music makers lurking inside our county cells and what their music says about them. Sheriff Rick Ramsey notes, “This book is totally unauthorized.” 'Don Key-Hoebee' by Miguel de la Cerveza The quixotic tale of the life and times of Bill Hoebee, a chivalrous young man from New Jersey who uses the waves of radio to bring laughter and justice to the Keys. BarTab publisher, Larry Bradley says, “This book doesn’t even have any pictures and I still love it!” cleighpujado@gmail.com
