THE D.U.I. THAT ROUSED A NATION
Turns out, Paul Revere’s famous ride didn’t start out as a hootin’ hollerin’ wake-up-the-villagers sort of trip. According to historian Charles Taussig, Revere embarked on the stealth mission from Charlestown to Lexington in order to warn Sam Adams, the beer guy, & John Hancock, the big signature guy, that the British were coming. But by chance, his route took him through Medford, the rum capital of America. At the time, rum was colonial America’s number one commercial industry. So naturally, Revere stopped in for a brief rest at the house of Captain Isaac Hall, the leader of the local Minutemen & distiller of Old Medford Rum. By the time Revere saddled up again, he’d sampled his fair share of Captain Hall’s hospitality & “he who came a silent horseman, departed a virile & vociferous crusader, with a cry of defiance & not of fear.” Not surprisingly, Revere was ‘pulled over’ by the Redcoats & detained for an hour before being released. So, it was actually Revere’s drunken caterwauling that roused Adams & Hancock at about 4:30 in the morning, only half an hour before fighting broke out on Lexington Green. Unfortunately, history has no record of Revere’s reaction
when he awoke the next day (presumably nursing a hangover) & was informed of what he’d done.
ADMIRAL EDWARD RUSSELL’S COCKTAIL
The record for history’s largest cocktail belongs to British Lord Admiral Edward Russell. In 1694, he threw an officer’s party that employed a garden’s fountain as the punch bowl. The concoction? A mixture that included 250 gallons of brandy, 125 gallons of Malaga wine, 1,400 pounds of sugar, 2,500 lemons, 20 gallons of lime juice, & 5 pounds of nutmeg. A series of bartenders actually paddled around in a small wooden canoe, filling up guests’ cups. Not only that, but they had to work in 15-minute shifts to avoid being overcome by the fumes & falling overboard. The party continued nonstop for a full week, pausing only briefly during rainstorms to erect a silk canopy over the punch to keep it from getting watered down. In fact, the festivities didn’t end until the fountain had been drunk completely dry. 19
LONDON’S 1814 BEER FLOOD
The Industrial Revolution wasn’t all steam engines & textile mills. Beer production increased exponentially, as well. Fortunately, the good people of England were up to the challenge & drained kegs as fast as they were made. Brewery owners became known as “beer barons,” & they spent their newfound wealth in an age-old manner -- by trying to party more than the next guy. Case in point: In 1814, Meux’s Horse Shoe Brewery in London constructed a brewing vat that was 22 feet tall & 60 feet in diameter, with an interior big enough to seat 200 for dinner -- which is exactly how its completion was celebrated. After the dinner, the vat was filled to its 4,000-barrel capacity. Unfortunately given that they overlooked a faulty supporting hoop, the vat ruptured, causing other vats to break, & the resulting commotion was heard up to 5 miles away. A wall of 1.3 million gallons of dark beer washed down the street, caving in two buildings & killing nine people by means of “drowning, injury, poisoning by the porter fumes, or drunkenness.” Rescue attempts were blocked & delayed by the thousands who flocked to the area to drink directly off 20
#BarTabMag
the road. When survivors were finally brought to the hospital, the other patients became convinced from the smell that the hospital was serving beer to every ward except theirs. A riot broke out, & even more people were left injured. Sadly, this incident was not deemed tragic enough at the time to merit an annual memorial service or reenactment.
THE DUTCH INGRATIATE THEMSELVES TO THE NATIVES
In 1609, the Dutch sent English explorer Henry Hudson westward for a third attempt at finding the fabled Northeast Passage. A near mutiny forced him southward, & upon reaching land, he encountered members of the Delaware Indian tribe. To foster good relations, Hudson shared his brandy with the tribal chief, who soon passed out. But upon waking up the next day, he asked Hudson to pour some more for the rest of his tribe. From then on, the Indians referred to the island as Manahachtanienk -- literally, “The High Island.” & not “high” as in “tall;” high as in “the place where we got blotto.” Most people would agree that Manhattan has stayed true to the spirit of its name ever since.
INDIAN ELEPHANTS & A BOTTLE OF RUM
Apparently, elephants like to get wasted. In fact, an outpost of the Indian army in the jungle region of Bagdogra has been under attack ever since a local herd of elephants raided the base in search of food & discovered the soldiers’ entire winter rations of rum. Since then, the pachyderms have regularly raided the base for a drink & have smashed down all defenses put up by the army, including electrified fences & firewalls. According to The Daily Telegraph, “An officer recently posted there explained that the elephants broke the rum bottles by cleverly curling their trunks around the bottom. Then they empty the contents down their throats. They soon got drunk, he said, & swayed around. They enjoy themselves & then return to the jungle.” This is by no means a singular incident, though. The animal kingdom is well-known for its ability to identify fruit that’s begun to ferment. Anthropologists even believe this is how early man discovered alcohol -- by observing the strange behavior of animals on a fruit bender.

Full name, age, originally from? My full name is Erin Elizabeth Futrel, I’m 32 years-old & I’m from Trenton, Michigan.
BarTender Profile
What made you move to Key West? I pulled it out of a hat. What were some of the other cities in the hat? Mostly warm places. San Diego, which I tried later on, but that obviously didn’t work out. Jacksonville, the Carolinas. It was so long ago. How long have you been in Key West? It’s 8 years as of September.
What’s the best part of working at Kevin’s? The men. [laughs]
What do you like to do when you’re not working? Sleep. [laughs] A lot of introverting. Sometimes I read. Hang out with my friends. [laughs] I don’t have any cool hobbies.
Speaking of, what’s your favorite branch of the Armed Forces? [laughs a lot] Oh, if I have to choose… damn it! Army I guess? Special Ops?
What’s the worst thing you’ve been caught doing? One time years ago, he wasn’t my boyfriend yet, but he was the ex of one of my friends & she showed up at his house & I had to hide in the closet. I guess I didn’t get caught though, so that doesn’t count. How long were you in the closet for? A while [laughs]. Like 30 minutes. [laughs] & then I slipped out the back door & into my car. What’s the largest age difference between you & someone you’ve hooked up with? During spring break I hooked up with a 19 year-old. [laughs] I caught the bug. Not like that! [laughs]
Have you ever eaten spray canned cheese? Yes! Because of the Goofy movie. Do you remember that? What’s your favorite menu item at Kevin’s? ChicTato [bites]. What your biggest bartending pet peeve? People telling me to smile. Do you have resting bitch face? I don’t! I actually think I smile like a crazy person, but I’m sorry that I’m not displaying my emotions the way that makes you feel comfortable. [laughs] Think you have what it takes to make Erin smile? You can find out then she’s behind the bar Tuesday through Saturday nights at Irish Kevin’s, 211 Duval St. #BarTabMag

C liff Cody
Hog’s Breath Saloon, 400 Front St Full name, age, favorite chord, originally from? Cliff Elrod Cody, I’m 44 & favorite guitar chord [laughs] it’s E minor, man. I like to go dark. Odessa, Texas. What were you doing before you picked up the guitar? I was a bouncer at a honky-tonk in west Texas. What was your first gig? The first band gig was terrible. It was an oil field company’s party & we were super shity. It was terrible. I started playing guitar solo at that honky-tonk bar. How did your first solo gig go? I’m sure it was terrible. [laughs] Thank goodness being young & cocky you think you’re a lot better than you are. How long did it take for you to start doing music full time? I quit my day job five years ago - I was a registered nurse. I did both for a long time. It got to a point where I was kind of doing both of them half-ass. So, I figured I can’t kill anybody singing. [laughs] What was your first Key West gig? First stage I ever got on in Key West was here at the Hog. Biggest influences - musically &/or in life? Willie Nelson. He’s tattooed on my arm.
What’s one song you enjoy covering & one you despise? It changes from time to time, but probably one of my favorites is ‘Night Moves’ by Bob Seger. There’s nothing I refuse to play. But, if I could choose one that would just like go away, it would be ‘Wagon Wheel’. I would be fine with that. [laughs]
BarTab BarChord How many albums have you made? This is the second one. What inspired the name of the new album, A Mess Like Me? Key West had a lot to do with it. It’s from a line in one of my songs on the album called ‘Guardian Angel’. It goes, “I bet my guardian angel has bloodshot eyes & dirty wings, a beat-up busted halo from chasing after a mess like me.” What song on the album best represents Cliff Cody’s music? ‘Guardian Angel,’ yeah. Unfortunately, that song is 90% true. When I was 16 years-old I really did get in a fight with my stepdad & broke his nose & ran away to Dallas. There’s some made-up stuff, like 10%. But it is 90% true. What does Cliff Cody like to eat/drink/smoke? [laughs] I did mention my Willie Nelson tattoo? My favorite drink, if I’m drinking alcohol, is Jack Daniels. Favorite food, golly, around here? Mr. Zs. Cliff Cody regularly plays at Hog’s Breath Saloon, 400 Front St. He’s back Oct 14th for a week. Until then, you can stream his new album A Mess Like Me or purchase it on Amazon or Apple Music. #BarTabMag

Joe Carter
@ RockStarAirBrush.com Full name, originally from, years in Key West? Joseph Phelps Carter. I pretty much grew up in the panhandle of Florida - Fort Walton Beach, Destin area. Been down here since 1983. Do you remember anything about your first visit? I rode into town in my little Mazda b2000 pickup truck loaded with my airbrush gear & a moped in the back. Was it for any particular reason? I came down to give a 2 week trial at a location on Green Street, where Tiki House is now. My friend opened up a shell & gift shop & for the sizzle on the steak they thought they should find an airbrush guy to set up there. Was that for Fantasy Fest®? No, Fantasy Fest® was happening. The lady that had the lease on the property suggested I get down here prior to Fantasy Fest®, because that was a new Festival. It only been happening for 3 years or so. She thought that I could do a little face painting [laughs]. So my first year I did a little [air quotes] face painting. How did you start touring festivals? I started to do Mardi Gras & concerts around the southeast Florida. There was Livestock up in Tampa Bay area. SunFest in Palm Beach. Just different festivals How did you get involved with Ozzfest? A friend of mine had done body painting for the very first one, but he ran into some problems with the tour & got kicked off. He called me up & wanted me to get on the tour, & he would go to work for me. So I contacted the tour 34
#BarTabMag
guy, & everything was a go. He was thrilled that I made the phone call, but needless to say, he said my friend could not come along for the ride. What was the best gig you’ve done? Probably the best gig would be Woodstock ‘99. A quarter of a million people, 3 days. I don’t even know how many bands. Just unbelievable. That was the show with the riot that ended with them burning the stage. I was right in the middle of all that. That seems to stand out as far as number one. [laughs] How long is an average medium coverage body painting session? Medium coverage, about 10 or 15 minutes. I’m pretty fast. That’s one reason I do what I do. I can really bang people out with a good quality product. Fast for a moderate-affordable price compared to a lot of my competition. How can someone reach you? You can catch me at ArtIslander@yahoo.com or 305-923-0008.
If you’re in town during Fantasy Fest® you should experience body painting as your outfit at least once. You can find Joe Carter set up on the 200 block of Duval St.
