EUROPEAN YOUTH SUMMIT: 100 FOR THE NEXT 100 IN THE DANUBE REGION

Today, Europe faces serious challenges in various spheres, from the economy and unemployment to growing nationalism in many European countries, lethargy and citizens’ skepticism towards politics, enlargement fatigue, to name but a few.

As the next generation, European youth should be involved when these questions are brought up. Currently, the young often lack the capacities, skills and opportunities needed to create joint actions and make a bigger impact. Similarly, they lack opportunities for content-oriented and substantial interaction with decision makers. These factors seem to hinder the young generation from taking an active stand in developing and discussing our common future. The Summit will provide them with an opportunity to discuss the different facets of the challenges Europe is facing, not only amongst them but also with current decision makers from politics and civil society.

ORGANIZERS Forum Alpbach Network (FAN) consists of more than 30 member organizations from all over Europe. Many former participants of the European Forum Alpbach have founded independent alumni groups in their home countries.

In this way, they continue to live the “spirit of Alpbach� throughout the year, represent the European Forum Alpbach and its values and actively contribute to the society in their home countries.

The project is implemented by four member organizations of FAN: Initiative Group Alpbach Sarajevo (IGAS) Club Alpbach Belgrade (CAB) Club Alpbach Croatia (KAH) Initiative Group Alpbach Podgorica (IGAP) Mission and goals of FAN and the four main organizers of the European Youth Summit are promotion of the values and importance of education among the youth, as well as lifelong learning, encouragement of national, regional and international cooperation, promotion of European integration, peace and stability throughout scientific cooperation, democratic dialog, liberal discussions and civil society development.

Venue: University of Sarajevo Ah, the famous crisis. Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, Spain, Ireland... Debts, defaults, aid packages, austerity everywhere. So are the discussions. Causes, analyses, histories. Was Friedmann right? Or was Keynes? Or can German economic “law and order” save the day? Or or or... A lot of theories, prognoses, speculations and finger-pointing. Very few constructive, comprehensive and clear suggestions and approaches on how to solve the damn thing. Well, not any more. The goal of our summit is to be practical, not (overly) theoretical, efficient, not bureaucratic, clear and edgy, not blurred and confusing. Our working groups consisting of young, energetic people striving to make a difference and renowned experts from the region as well as the wider European continent will answer the call to arms and will not be afraid to be innovative and creative. New scientific and technological innovations, new migrants to Europe from all parts of the world, new approaches to balancing needs and abilities, nature and logic of the market, invisible hand and the nanny-state. The challenge is tough, but so are we – after all, it’s our future we’re talking about.

Venue: University of Sarajevo The title of this session is by no means an accident at all – the Region has had its own fair share of Neros in the not-so-distant past. That is why it has been Europe’s migraine for so many months and years. From “Brotherhood and Unity” to the shiny yellow stars of the European Union, from intervention to integration, from ethnic to corruption cleansing – whatever you say about the Western Balkans, you can’t call it boring.

Still, it’s the future that interests us – how to steer the good ol’ regional ship into safe havens at last. How can we eradicate corruption, foster cooperation, be united in diversity? How can we achieve government of the people, by the people, for the people in the places where it still doesn’t exist, or at best only partially? How can we better integrate the region within itself, and it with Europe? How can we help others in Europe who are now sadly experiencing the hardships we experienced in the 90s? Exactly one hundred years after European nations developed a sudden liking for international bloodbaths, the future looks brighter, but obstacles still lie ahead.

At our summit, young people and decision makers will strive to help, pacify, unite, and integrate. Where there is discord, may we bring harmony – unless we do something about it, who will?

Danube Salon in Sarajevo Reception and mini-tourism fair of the EU Danube Strategy Countries 4th of June at 19.00h The Danube Salon is a unique event established in 2012 and has been held annually since. My Europe Short Film Festival 5th of June at 20.00h Europe is being regarded from many different points of view. The term “European” is widely used. But what does it mean? Many people have images, thoughts, ideals, critics and opinions on what it represents.

In order to clear and shape this concept, Citizens of Europe established “My Europe Film Festival”. This contest shows films every year at several places across the continent in order to promote discussion about different visions of “Europe”. The festival addresses citizens, artists and filmmakers.Citizens of Europe is a politically independent, non-governmental and non-profit oriented network of people from diverse backgrounds that initiates and cooperates in a wide range of projects, with the aim of contributing to an active civil society in Europe.

Venue: Cinema Meeting Point Meeting Point is a cult cinema in Sarajevo. It is the host of Sarajevo Film Festival that is held every year during summer months in Sarajevo and represents one of the greatest movie events on the Balkans and wider.

Olympics Night 6th of June at 20.00h The year 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the Winter Olympic Games held in Sarajevo in 1984. In both political and sport terms, it was the biggest event in former Yugoslavia. Every inhabitant of the country still calls it the winter fairy tale; a time and place where the East and West block finally united and where even the pickpockets were returning stolen wallets.

Within the region, an event that could rival the Olympic games has not been organized since. However, new festivals and ideas that were born, such as Exit, Sarajevo Film Festival, INmusic, Mixer, etc. are vigorously trying to rebuild the regional spirit. Thus, during the Olympics Night panel discussion we wonder – How Do Major Sports and Cultural Events Influence Regional Integration? And how essential is cooperation, not only between different organizations and events, but between countries?

Visit to Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art A group of enthusiasts, led by Enver Hadžiomerspahić, invited artists from all over the world to donate some of their works. This was to serve as a symbol of support for Sarajevo during the Siege, while also building up a collection for Sarajevo’s future museum of contemporary art. Today, this collection is considered to be one of the most valuable collections of modern art in Southeastern Europe and it is comprised of approximately 150 works of art.

Venue: Dom mladih (engl. Youth House) The cult place where many of Sarajevo bands started their careers and where many famous former Yugoslavian bands played. It was opened with the premier of the film “Battle on Neretva” in November 1969 as a part of cultural and sport center “Skenderija”.
