JUDITH JAMISON:

YOU DO IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Camille A. Brown’s The Groove To Nobody’s Business. Photo: Eduardo Patino, NYC.

E

ven with a cold, Judith Jamison speaks with the deep, rich tones that match her renowned power as a dancer. Particularly in the roles created to showcase her extraordinary talent by the equally remarkable Alvin Ailey, Jamison has imprinted herself into the Golden Book of Greats. She evokes the kinds of breathless reminiscences expressed by Atlanta resident Elizabeth Vantine, who saw Jamison dance over twenty years ago. “To last that long in your memory, it has to be something that hit you right between the eyes…tall, she was all elbows and knees and strong bare feet flat on the floor…and it was beautiful, very stark, meant to enchant you like The Nutcracker but not with lollipops.” Yet when asked if she still dances, Jamison exclaims, ‘What for!’ and then laughs and says, “I have thirty people in front of me who are dancing and having as much fun as I did—I adore my dancers.” After performing for over twenty-five years, including stints with American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Broadway stage, and her own company (The Jamison Project), this early discovery of Agnes de Mille took over as Artistic Director for Ailey’s company in 1989. Ailey had pre-selected her to follow in his footsteps prior to his untimely death. Since then she has shared her gifts as a choreographer (including a commission for the Salt Lake City Olympics), writer (her autobiography is titled Dancing Spirit), and inspired leader of the artistic and educational programs of her mentor’s namesake. Under Jamison’s care, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has traveled the globe to on-going acclaim and, since 2004, has graced its long-awaited permanent home in midtown Manhattan with ever expanding multicultural programming for all ages. Making it all meld into a glorious symphony of action is the woman whom Ailey entrusted in 1971 to perform his haunting new composition Cry as a birthday present for his beloved mother, and as a tribute to the “coherent relationship between the dancing body and the experience of living as 6

At the Ailey camp, we want to spark that light in you. a black woman in America.” Her short explanation for all of this service is, “You do it because you love it.” Although she is firmly tied to New York City, Jamison also considers Atlanta to be “a second artistic home—do we have a history with ya’ll or what.” Her response to how Atlanta is different from New York is, ‘Well, it’s the South, Honey!’ and then, “By the way, you know I know the mayor [Shirley Franklin]—we’ve known each other since we were little teeny girls in dance Judith Jamison, Artistic Director, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. school in Philadelphia.” In fact, she has known nearly all of Atlanta’s mayors. Photo by Andrew Eccles Another part of her relationship with Atlanta comes through an early memory of dancing at The Fabulous Fox theatre. Saying how much she loved dancing there (“Thank God that theatre makes people look larger than life because the thing is so big”), she describes one performance where they incorporated the ceiling, stars and all, into their ballet. Jamison talks about another kind of magic when she explains the power of Alvin Ailey’s work over the years. Feeling a deep responsibility to carry on his message that “the most important thing was to bring dance to the community”, she goes on to say that his “next most important thing is that you don’t do it in a vacuum; in other words, bringing dance to people means that you are changing their minds—you’re lighting up a side of them and becoming a reflection of them”. Her personal observation is “That light we have inside us the day we are born, you know, it gets smothered, and to try to get through the world with that light [intact] is difficult.” This is where the AileyCamp comes in, a program for youth that began in 1986, with the first camp in Kansas City, Missouri. Atlanta has been blessed to be the ninth in the development cycle, with Jamison’s note that “At the Ailey camp, we want to spark that light in you” and a further description of the camp as a place where underserved 6th through 8th graders can build self-esteem, selfdiscipline, and creative expression. The students work with members of the Alvin Ailey company, who do it “because they love it.” She sums it up with, “Isn’t it amazing! These are the things that Mr. Ailey thought about back in the day…” before anyone else had realized the positive impact of such programs. While they are in residence at the Fabulous Fox (coming up February 28 - March 2), the company also does a “mini performance” for children that includes the full version of one of their Judith Jamison in Alvin Ailey's Cry. signature Classical African-American pieces, Revelations, excerpts from Photo by R. Faligant other ballets, and some demonstrations of lights and costumes— “Basically how the inside works and how the outside works.” With all these and others in the long list of educational programs, Jamison reflects on how “I love being a director because I see generation after generation of dancers” and “I can pass along the information that Mr. Ailey left—his passion— while reinforcing how important his contribution to the fabric of dance has been.” Her impact can be no less amazing. AileyCamp Atlanta will be held June 2-30. For NBAF’s 20th more information call (404) 881-2086 or email Anniversary Diane.Sales@FoxTheatre.org. ONE ON ONE WITH:

THE UNDERGROUND ARTIST: TERRIE AJILE AXAM

by Pamela Turner

T

errie Ajile Axam is the last person you’d think of as an underground artist because she has been at the forefront of so many innovations in dance. A true pioneer with an irresistibly musical name (the middle part is pronounced ehgee-lay), Axam is Founding Artistic Director of Total Dance/Dancical Productions, Inc. The company, which offers a series of unique dance classes and workshops, is also a producing performance group. Axam describes her company as a “spiritual manifestation” of her work and emphasizes that their studio instruction focuses on the “total person”. One of the living examples of that philosophy is Axam’s daughter, Aquila Kikora Franklin, a dance professor at Penn State University who trained at Total Dance Theatre, then went on to study both law and dance, becoming what Axam calls “the new wave of future artists who will strive to be multi-dimensional—like President Clinton who was also a jazz musician.” Axam has three children, whom she says are “definitely my greatest creation on this earth,” and all of whom were conceived while she was in college, starting with her junior year at Princeton—“They had just started letting women into the program, and here I came, not only a woman, but an AfricanAmerican woman who was expecting.” In addition to her children, Axam’s whole family has been involved in the mission of Total Dance/Dancical Productions, starting with a mother who told her that “When you do your best, you are a winner, no matter what” to a father who gave her a work ethic that allowed her to take advantage of every opportunity, from working as Cultural Arts Director in New Jersey, to studying with Alvin Ailey, to teaching in Kingston, Jamaica. Her sister Dawn and various cousins and nieces have all been involved with her work, and have helped to spread the magic of the unique system of dance she has developed for the past twenty-two years called “Mojah”. This Swahili word means “one” as in finding oneself or being in the center of one’s own creative act. It is this particular approach to dance that pervades the Total Dance/Dancical Productions studio. As she describes the ways of Mojah, she also reflects on her personal philosophy that “We have a purpose here on this earth and if we do our work, we can actually come [finally] to meet ourselves.” Fittingly, Axam conceived of the name of her system before she knew the word already existed. Because her unusual brand of movement is a combination of Modern, Jazz, and African dance, she had begun to call it Mojaaf, based on the first two letters of each of the three types and leaving the “f” silent. Regardless of all the ingredients that are melded in to it (including ballet), the Mojah system is the single vision of a woman who “took a stand’ whenever (often) she was challenged and found that many groups wanted to make use 10

of her talents, including actor/director Avery Brooks who invited her to choreograph several of his theatre productions. It was during a trip to Jamaica that she “found herself” by discovering the Swahili spelling and meaning of “her” word. In the midst of all her other contributions, one of Axam’s most enduring multidimensional dance theatre pieces, titled Women Hold Up Half the Sky, was created as a thesis piece while she was in graduate school at Rutgers University. This tribute to living African-American women who have “contributed back to their community” was later honored through an official proclamation by Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson. Axam began the piece as a way to balance the emotions she felt while reading slave narratives. “Incorporating poetry and inter-laid with the different arts,” this piece has toured extensively, providing some of the capital used to open her studio, and it has received numerous other accolades as it soon became her “signature piece”. Axam is now renewing Women Hold Up Half the Sky for an invitational performance March 2 at Penn State University, and is also planning a performance/reception around the piece in Atlanta (Adamsville Recreation Center) on March 20, the date of Jackson’s proclamation. A mini concert of the piece will be held at the downtown public library on March 29. Although she has danced continuously “since my mother began to teach me at age 3 and I started formal lessons at age 4”, Axam is adamant that she won’t stop performing until it’s impossible to do so. Before her mother passed away in 1999, she told her daughter to “never stop moving”. Apparently, there were two reasons for the advice: the first “because she knew I loved to dance and the second because I love to eat.” It is hard to imagine Axam ever ceasing to move (or getting over-sized) and even though she describes herself as having gone “underground” since her mother died, moving to live outside of Atlanta “deep into the community in a kind of hibernation”, it is clear that just like a fire burning in the core of the earth, she will continue to spark with life-giving creativity. EVENTS TO ENERGIZE 5,000 DANCERS IN ’08 by Lorraine Knight

arcus Alford and his wife Annie Day have always been considered movers and shakers in the dance world. With their production company DanceFest, Inc. gearing up for its busy season, the couple is in perpetual motion and busy shaking things up for dancers from metro Atlanta to Germany! DanceFest, Inc. presents both “JAZZ ON TAP” (the Atlanta Jazz and Tap Dance Festival) and “BalletFest Atlanta 2008” in March and “Jazz On Tap On Tour Summer Dance Intensives” in July. Between the 3 events, 5000 dancers, company directors and audience members will celebrate their art form through master Photo by classes, attending performances and intensive summer study. Mike Barfield Mr. Alford’s roots began with Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago. He branched Dancentre South out to author Jazz Danceology, an instructional text on Jazz Dance, teach and Company: Ricky Stone perform throughout the US and Europe and choreograph award winning works on companies large and small. He founded and directed the highly acclaimed Jazz Dance Theatre South that toured the US and Europe from 1987-2002. Ms. Day holds a BA in dance from Butler University, serves as Artistic Director of Dancentre South Studio and teaches for major dance organizations around the country. This dynamic husband and wife team created DanceFest, Inc. in 1987 to open doors. Patti Rutland Jazz: Photo by Donnie Bowling Through their events, Marcus and Annie encourage dancers of all ages to grow as artists and technicians through master classes with renowned professionals and participation in concert level performances where competition is not the focus. Audiences are enriched as they enjoy the high energy generated only from live dance performance. This year’s 21st annual “JAZZ ON TAP” will feature 5 different shows. “It’s hard to believe the festival began 21 years ago with 8 dance companies and through the support and enthusiasm of dancers and audiences alike has grown to one of the nation’s largest annual dance events”, remarks Alford. The festival began in the hopes of bringing the fire and excitement of jazz and tap dance to the public and over the 21 years dancers have traveled from 20 states and from far away as Germany to provide that spark. Guest artists and choreographers have included Savion Glover, Lane Alexander, Jay Fagan, and Tommy Sutton. This year’s featured company is Patti Rutland Jazz whose members have worked 14

with Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, The Backstreet Boys, Keith Sweat, on the weekly television series American Dreams, and The MTV Movie Awards. Dance Magazine wrote of their award winning piece “A.M.”, “…volatile and full of uncontrollable energy.” Marcus discovered a need for a similar festival for the ballet world and founded “BalletFest Atlanta” in 2004. His experience on the faculties of SERBA (Southeast Regional Ballet Association), the International Tanz Werkstatt (Germany) and the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi immersed Alford in several large, regional, national and international festivals. He states,”Atlanta deserved its own ballet festival, presenting a wealth of quality dance right here in our own metro area. Audiences will love the variety of ballets presented this season and will be thoroughly entertained with everything from Bach to the Beatles!” “BalletFest Atlanta”, in its 5th year, will showcase 29 companies in 3 concerts. Both festivals offer workshop classes featuring a world class faculty and open to the public and festival participants. “Jazz On Tap On Tour Summer Dance Intensives” were created in 2007. The 4 day events have a congenial, up-beat atmosphere where students further their training and nurture their love of dance while teachers refresh and recharge through updates on choreography, teaching, music and more. Last summer’s workshops welcomed over 300 dancers in Branson, MO, Detroit, MI and Atlanta, GA. Alford and Day pride themselves on promoting a lively atmosphere of community and sharing at their dance events. The non-competitive nature of their projects encourages artistic growth and expression and sets them apart in the dance world. These two are movers and shakers with a mission!
