Tim Gunn Shares His Secrets for Gracious Living Fashion guru and television star Tim Gunn will share his secrets for living a life of graciousness and style during a Feature Session today, 2:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m., on the Feature Stage of the AARP Exhibit Hall in the LACC’s South Hall.

Tim is chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne, where he is responsible for attracting and developing creative talent. Previously, Tim devoted more than two decades to the Parsons School of Design as a member of its administration and faculty.

But Tim is likely best known to AARP members for his involvement with fashion-inspired TV shows, notably Project Runway. He has left an indelible mark on contestants and viewers of this award-winning, reality-based design show with his catch phrase, “Make it work.”

That phrase, however, didn’t originate on Project Runway. “I began using it in my classroom when I was a design teacher at Parsons, the celebrated design college in Manhattan where I worked for 24 years. I found it to be an extremely useful mantra when my students were in trouble,” Tim explained in his latest book, Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making It Work, which rose to #5 on the New York Times best-seller list.

Tim has authored several other best-selling books on fashion and style. His first book, A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style, was the core of Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, a two-season makeover show on Bravo. He also lectures widely on fashion and lifestyle design.

He is also known for his red carpet coverage of the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards and Golden Globes and for numerous guest appearances on television dramas and comedies.

Tim dedicates a good deal of his time to charitable organizations, especially those associated with domestic violence, AIDS awareness and GLBT issues. Those organizations include the National Domestic Violence Hotline, GMHC, the HetrickMartin Institute, Bailey House and the Human Rights Campaign.

His latest project, The Revolution, is a daily TV show about personal health and lifestyle transformations. It is set to premiere in January 2012 on ABC. Living a well-mannered life of integrity and character is hard work, Tim admits, but the rewards are many: being a good friend, being glamorous and attractive and being a success—much like Tim himself!

Movies for Grownups Film Fest Kicks Off Today Movie buffs, unite! An outstanding line-up of films will be screened free of charge for Life@50+ attendees this week at three premier venues. It’s all part of our annual Movies for Grownups® Film Festival.

Actor Seth Rogen and writer Will Reiser of 50/50, and director Mark Landsman of Thunder Soul, will be here to discuss those new films.

AARP’s Movies for Grownups program spotlights and celebrates movies with story lines, performances and filmmaking that have distinct relevance to the 50+ audience. AARP’s reviews of these noteworthy films are found in AARP The Magazine, on AARP’s website, on radio and in newspapers nationwide 12:30 p.m.–2:30 p.m.

Thunder Soul—Followed by Q&A with the director Regal Cinemas at L.A. Live In the 1970s, a charismatic band leader named Conrad “Prof” Johnson transformed Houston’s struggling Kashmere High School Stage Band into a world-class funk powerhouse. This music-filled, heartfelt documentary follows the band’s illustrious alumni as they return to play a tribute concert for “Prof” 35 years later, during his 92nd year. Some hadn’t played their horns in decades, but they dusted off the instruments to show Prof and the world they’ve still got it. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx produced the film, which opens in theaters tomorrow (September 23).

Helping him through are a well-meaning pal (Seth Rogen), a freaked-out girlfriend (Bryce Dallas Howard), a too-involved shrink (Up in the Air Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick) and a smothering mom (Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston). Jazz and Romance Take the Stage Tonight Lionel Richie, Patti Austin, Ramsey Lewis to Perform at NOKIA Theatre What better way to kick off Life@50+ in Los Angeles than with a concert featuring some of the most beloved jazz and R&B legends of our time?

Three world-class performers—Lionel Richie, Patti Austin and Ramsey Lewis—will take the stage tonight. It all begins at 7:30 p.m. in the NOKIA Theatre at L.A. Lionel Richie is a music legend who has written, performed and produced classic hits and multi-platinum albums, both as founder and lead singer of the Commodores and as a solo artist, for more than three decades.

After the Commodores signed with Motown Records in 1971, its hits included the funky “Brick House,” “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady” and “Sail On.” After a decade, Lionel began working outside the group, topping the charts with “All Night Long,” “Truly,” “Endless Love” (with Diana Ross) and “Dancing on the Ceiling.”

Lionel has been honored with five Grammy Awards, an Oscar, 11 American Music Awards, five People’s Choice Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His latest release, JUST GO, features collaborations with some of today’s hottest hit-makers.

Grammy winner Patti Austin is a world-acclaimed performer with 17 solo albums and numerous collaborations to her credit.

Her career began at age four when she sang at the Apollo Theater

in Harlem with her godmother, Dinah Washington. Patti’s early solo career included the Grammy-nominated hit “Baby Come To Me,” a duet with James Ingram, and Quincy Jones featured Patti on his Grammy-winning classic The Dude. During the 1970s Patti’s vocals backed up artists including Paul Simon, Roberta Flack, Luther Vandross and Diana Ross.

Sound Advice, Patti’s 18th album, highlights her abilities as a lyrical interpreter to touch, move, inspire and connect with music lovers around the world.

“I wanted to accomplish a lot with Sound Advice—including original material, covers and focusing on vocal performances for certain tunes. I’m very happy with the record,” Patti said. “I went through a lot of ups and downs about how it was going to flow, about the material, if it would be cohesive and if it was going to have any point of view musically, lyrically, thematically. Now I’m having a lot of fun performing the material live.”

Ramsey Lewis is an award-winning composer, pianist and jazz legend who began taking piano lessons at age four. The Chicago native’s performance style and musical selections reflect his early years playing gospel and classical music, enriched by his love of jazz and other musical forms.

His first album, Ramsey Lewis and The Gentlemen of Swing by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, was released in 1956. By 1965, Ramsey was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with “The In Crowd,” “Hang On Sloopy” and “Wade In The Water.”

His latest album is Songs from the Heart: Ramsey Plays Ramsey.

In addition to recording, composing and performing, Ramsey hosts a syndicated radio program and fosters youth involvement in music.

Ramsey has three Grammy Awards and seven gold records to his credit. Often called legendary, he says, “It’s a high honor when someone says so, but I don’t see myself that way. What keeps me enthusiastic and energizes me, is the realization that the more I learn, the more I find there is to know.”

Peter Greenberg Shares Tips for Online Travel Peter Greenberg, America’s most recognized and respected frontline travel news journalist, will share insights about planning travel online during a Lifestyle Session today from 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. in LACC Room 153.

Peter is travel editor for CBS News, appearing on The Early Show and CBS Evening News and on other CBS platforms.

As AARP’s Travel Ambassador, Peter provides travel insights through speaking engagements like this event, videos for AARP’s website and answering hundreds of travel questions posed by members. His recent tips covered when to renew a passport, how to choose the best seat on an airplane and how to identify travel options for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.

No other journalist brings his level of expertise and extensive experience to the travel process. An Emmy Award-winning investigative reporter and producer, Peter was named one of the most influential people in travel by Travel Weekly, along with Bill Marriott, Richard Branson and Al Gore.

His nationally syndicated Peter Greenberg Worldwide Radio Show broadcasts each week from a different remote location around the world. This live, three-hour weekly radio program and a daily short-form travel feature are syndicated by United Stations and heard on a combined 400+ stations.

Behind the Scenes of Lifestyle Television with Leeza Gibbons Leeza Gibbons has been a media personality for more than 25 years, as television news anchor, radio show host, producer and businesswoman. This year, she returned to TV as the new host of AARP’s lifestyle show, My Generation.

At a Feature Session today from 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. on the Feature Stage in the Exhibit Hall, Leeza will take you behind the scenes of My Generation.

AARP and AARP Foundation Team Up to Fight Hunger Each day, an astonishing six million Americans age 60 and older are forced to choose between buying groceries and their prescription medications. Most of them worked all their lives. They raised children. They paid taxes. They gave back to their communities.

It’s time to make sure no one goes hungry in the United States.

That’s why AARP and its charitable affiliate, AARP Foundation, teamed up last fall to launch Drive to End Hunger—a multi-year, nationwide commitment to solve the problem of hunger among older Americans.

Drive to End Hunger is about finding long-term sustainable solutions to this solvable problem by tackling senior hunger through research, holding local food drives and raising awareness—most impressively through a unique effort that leverages the passion of NASCAR and its millions of fans.

Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet debuted at this year’s Daytona 500. It will run in several select races in the Sprint Cup Series over the next several years, raising both awareness and funds for the issue of senior hunger.

Already this season, Drive to End Hunger has organized food and cash donations to provide more than 2.6 million meals through local food banks.

Another important priority is increasing participation in SNAP, the federal government’s food assistance program. It is heartbreaking that two-thirds of older people who are eligible for SNAP do not receive those benefits. AARP Foundation is working to convince those who are eligible that there is no shame in accepting help with getting food.

Meanwhile, AARP Foundation is conducting and sharing research into some of the reasons why people don’t get enough to eat, including inadequate income, isolation and lack of transportation to food stores.

This Saturday evening’s concert by Tony Bennett and guests will directly support Drive to End Hunger.

Just Added: A Conversation with Jane Goodall, and How to Turn a Passion into Profit on YouTube Two inspiring sessions have just been added to today’s line-up!

The Shape of Things to Come: A Conversation with Jane Goodall 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. in LACC Room 408 Jane Goodall will make her second appearance of the day, during a relaxed discussion about positive environmental trends. Jane and other intriguing speakers will also discuss the impact of the environment on aging.

The seed for Care2 was planted many years ago, when Randy was 13 years old and traveling up the Amazon with his father in a thatch-covered board.

“My father, an ornithologist, studied the birds, while I marveled at the rich wildlife, lush vegetation and fascinating people we

encountered deep in the jungle,” Randy recalled. “What struck me most was the contrast between the remote tribes living in harmony with the rainforest, and the poverty and deforestation in the most ‘modernized’ towns we visited.”

In 1998, as the Internet was emerging, Randy realized he could use it to try to mobilize people around the world. Today, more than 15 million members and 400 nonprofit partners of Care2 are making a positive difference.

Rounding out the session are Mary Furlong, a leading authority on boomer trends; and moderator Rick Moody, who is AARP’s director of academic affairs.

Turning Your Passions into a Career on YouTube 3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. in LACC Room 403 Two people will describe how they turned their passions (for art and cooking) into some of the most popular channels on YouTube.

AARP Members Volunteer to Ensure You Enjoy This Event Nearly 1,400 of your fellow AARP members are volunteering to ensure you have a great time at Life@50+ here in Los Angeles.

Most of them are Californians who wish to roll out the red carpet to welcome attendees to the Golden State.

“Without the dedication and involvement of so many volunteers, this event just wouldn’t be possible. They provide energy and an important personal touch,” said Tom Porter, state director of AARP California.

Many of the volunteers will greet the expected 24,000 attendees, providing directions and answering questions. Some will serve as room monitors at various sessions, directing people to seats and helping to faciliAudrey Lee tate questions and answers with the speakers. Others will assist with the hotel shuttle buses and support many other activities.

For some people, helping out is part of the fun of Life@50+.

Take Audrey Lee, for example. An active member of AARP Chapter 5117 in Los Angeles, Audrey has volunteered with the AARP California state office for more than five years.

Having attended Life@50+ in Anaheim, California, in 2006, Washington, D.C. in 2008 and Las Vegas in 2009, she is familiar with how the event runs.

“Audrey loves helping people get correct and accurate information. She will put those skills to work at the Life@50+ Exhibitor Registration desk, and previously helped prepare volunteers during an orientation session held in late August,” said Antoine Cook of AARP California, who is coordinating volunteers for this event.

“We ran out of assignments to give people, and had to create a waiting list that has more than 700 names on it,” Antoine said. “It is a testament to the giving spirit of AARP members.”

The four members of AARP’s all-volunteer Board of Directors who hail from California will be on hand, too. Attendees will have a chance to meet them and share their views during certain hours in the Exhibit Hall. (Please consult each day’s newspaper for the schedule.) This information is designed to help you understand treatment with PROVENGE (pronounced PROH-venj).

What is PROVENGE? PROVENGE is a prescription medicine that is used to treat certain patients with advanced prostate cancer. PROVENGE is made from your own immune cells. The typical course of treatment is 3 infusions.

What should I tell my doctor before getting PROVENGE? Tell your doctor about all your medical problems, including: • heart problems • lung problems • history of stroke Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription drugs, vitamins, and dietary supplements.

What are the possible or reasonably likely side effects of PROVENGE? The most common side effects of PROVENGE include: • chills • back pain • nausea • fatigue • headache • joint ache • fever PROVENGE infusion can cause serious reactions. As part of the Movies for Grownups® Film Festival, Life@50+ attendees can be a part of the exclusive Los Angeles premiere of The Way, starring Martin Sheen and his director-son Emilio Estevez, Friday at the NOKIA Theatre.

Both Martin and Emilio will be here to introduce the film live and in person at the nearby NOKIA Theatre at L.A. Live. The film, which Emilio wrote and directed, opens in theaters on October 7.

Tom decides to finish the historical pilgrimage in his son’s place, leaving his “California bubble life” behind. Along the way, he meets other pilgrims who seek greater meaning in their lives, and learns the difference between

“the life we live and the life we choose.”

NOKIA Theatre opens at 5:00 p.m., and celebrities and guests will arrive via the red carpet from 5:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. Feel free to bring a camera to capture your own outdoor paparazzi shots. The Way will be shown from 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.

Jane Goodall’s life story is a testament to perseverance and courage. In July 1960— long before the women’s movement had really taken root—she began her landmark study of chimpanzees in what is now Tanzania under the mentorship of famed anthropologist and paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. Her work at Gombe became the foundation of future primatological research and James Brown redefined the relationship between humans and animals.

In 1977, Jane established the Jane Goodall Institute, a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. The Institute is widely recognized for establishing innovative, communitycentered conservation and development programs in Africa.

Jane has been the subject of several documentaries and movies and has authored numerous publications about her work, including The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior, considered by many to be the definitive scientific work on chimpanzees.

Today Jane travels an average of 300 days per year, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees, other environmental crises, and her reasons for hope about the future of our planet. She continually urges her audiences to recognize their personal responsibility and ability to effect change.

James Brown—better known as “J.B.”—is an award-winning broadcaster who hosts The NFL Today on CBS and Inside the NFL on Showtime. He is also a founding partner of the Washington Nationals baseball team. A standout basketball player prior to his broadcast career, he received AllIvy League honors at Harvard University and captained the team in his senior year before being drafted by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks.
