Prior to the event, the survey was emailed to subscribers of EE Times, ECN, Purchasing Electronics, Electronics Sourcing North America, Battery Power, EP&T, Canadian Electronics and other industry publications. With over 450 responses, there is a good chance that the survey will become a regular activity of the conference.

“We know that EDS is where the electronics industry gathers together to do business, and participants are telling us that they want more face-time with colleagues and customers to maximize the conference experience,” said Newman. “The All-Industry Reception recognizes the leaders in the industry, spotlights their best practices, and provides an opportunity for networking even before the conference officially starts.”

Gary Smith of Yorba Linda, Calif.-based GL Smith Associates said that despite many obstacles, his company is determined to work harder and smarter this year to earn business.

“Long leads times will become reality, expediting will become a way of life, and the question will be how we respond to these challenges,” he said. “The principals that step up will be successful and those that try to dictate to the marketplace will perish. I am going to be very demanding and forceful in doing what is necessary to achieve our customers’ needs.”

ECA to assume management of EDS ECA, NEDA and ERA to produce the show by the industry for the industry LAS VEGAS, NV – A new chapter in the history of the 73-

year-old Electronic Distribution Show (EDS) opened today when it was announced that the Electronic Components Association (ECA) will assume management for EDS 2011 through 2013.

The change will give the three long-time sponsoring organizations – ECA, the National Electronic Distributors Association (NEDA), and the Electronics Representatives Association (ERA) – greater day-to-day input into the structure and future of EDS. The EDS Board, with equal representation from ECA, NEDA and ERA, is maintaining continuity for next year’s event by retaining Gerald Newman, long-time leader of EDS’s management team, as general counsel for the show, and Gretchen Oie as EDS show manager on ECA’s conference staff.

“The electronics industry owes a debt of gratitude to the management team led by Gerald Newman,” says James Kaplan, President of Cornell Dubilier and EDS Board president. “We plan to maintain the standards of management excellence sustained by EDS over many decades, while infusing the show with new ideas and programs based on direct input from the electronics distribution community.”

“We will tap into current industry issues and our memberships’ priorities to make EDS the premier event for achieving supply chain excellence,” he says. “This will truly be an event managed by the industry for the industry.”

ECA represents the electronic components industry and the technologies, materials and supply chain associated with it. NEDA represents supplier authorized distributors of electronic components and their manufacturer partners. ERA represents electronics field sales organizations in the electronics and high-technology industries.

OPTEK Technology offers cost-effective miniature incremental encoders Providing design engineers with a cost-effective, high pulse per revolution device for applications with small shaft motors, TT electronics OPTEK Technology offers a family of low-cost miniature incremental encoders. The OPE1275 and OPE2275 single- and dual-channel encoders are designed specifically for use in printer motors, machine automation and machine safety equipment.

“The OPE1275 and OPE2275 encoders are the most cost-effective miniature incremental encoders in the industry,” said Roland Chapa, vice president of optoelectronic integrated solutions for TT electronics OPTEK Technology. “While comparable products in the market cost well into the $60 each range, our unified sales force is offering these encoders at less than $24 each in quantities of 1 to 99 pieces.”

In addition to the low cost, the analog output miniature encoders feature 256 pulses per revolution at speeds of up to 5,000 RPM. The encoders are also easy to install, requiring only a Phillips screwdriver for assembly. The extended shaft versions of the encoders are fully assembled and ready for immediate connection.

The OPE1275 encoder provides a single-channel analog output for speed of rotation, while the OPE2275 device provides a dual-channel analog output for speed and direction of rotation. Electrical connection is achieved via a 4-pin connector providing V+, ground and output pins.

Frequency response ranges from DC to 25kHz, providing a maximum of 256 cycles per revolution (CPR) and 1024 quadrature states per revolution (PPR). Typical rise

ECA reports continued rise in component orders ARLINGTON, VA – Electronic component orders kept rising

in April, according to the monthly order index compiled by the Electronic Components Association (ECA).

The April upswing continues the momentum from a large jump reported in ECA’s March index. Meanwhile, the 12-month average, comparing this year’s results to last year’s, continued an ascent that began last summer.

manufacturers, almost all of which are reporting higher orders than at this time last year. The rise in orders reflects growth across almost every electronic segment, including automotive, cell phones and computers.

“Manufacturers have been riding a modest wave over the last nine months,” says Bob Willis, ECA president. “It’s no tsunami, but it’s certainly welcome after a stagnant or receding market during the previous two years.”

ITT launches rugged CFast 24-way connectors and cover sets ITT Interconnect Solutions, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of connectors, interconnects, and cable assemblies, has developed a line of twopiece ultrasonic welded cover sets and 24-way connectors. The rugged CFast cover sets are comprised of a plastic frame molded around the cover and oriented in position with guide-posts, simplifying assembly. Once assembled, the covers are ultrasonically welded together with a continuous weld joint around the perimeter of the card.

“The compact flash connectors and cover sets were designed specifically to support CFast’s latest small form factor removable storage

standard set forth by the Compact Flash Association (CFA),” said Keith Teichmann, director of marketing for ITT Interconnect Solutions. “The innovative design and packaging of the connectors and cover sets also results in the most rigid CFast products in the industry and allows OEMs to streamline their manufacturing processes to deliver cost-effective solutions in minimum production times.”

ITT’s CFast cover sets and 24-way connectors are available in either Type I or Type II packages. The surface mount connectors are rated at 1.5A per pin and designed to exhibit no discontinuity greater than 100ns.

Total mating force is 28.8N maximum at 25mm/minute, and total unmating force is 3.7N minimum, 24.5N maximum at 25mm/minute. The connectors and cover sets are rated to 10,000 mating cycles. Operating temperature ranges from -55°C to +85°C. Orion Fans develops low profile, stackable DC fans for telecom, appliance applications Orion Fans, a division of Knight Electronics and a leading manufacturer of standard and custom AC and DC fans, fan trays and accessories, has developed a series of low profile, stackable DC fans. Designated the OD172SAPL Series, the stackable, low profile, aluminum DC fans feature two flat sides and measure just 172 x 150 x 38mm.

“While comparable fans of this size are round, the SAPL-frame features two flat sides that allow for stacking them side-by-side with no wasted space,” said David Luna, Orion Fans’ product marketing manager. “As a result, these fans are much lower profile than typical 172mm round fans, making them ideal for a variety of applications, including telecom racks and enclosures, as well as for ventilation in appliances and white goods, such as cooling and refrigeration units.”

The OD172SAPL Series stackable fans are constructed with a diecast aluminum frame and a PBT, UL94V-0 plastic impeller. The fans feature a dual ball bearing system and a polarity protected, auto restart, brushless DC motor. The DC fans are also available with tachometer (5V/TTL) output, locked rotor alarm (5V/TTL), as well as thermistor, PWM and constant speed controls.

Available in 12, 24 and 48V DC versions, the

OD172SAPL fans feature voltage ranges from 8 to 14, 15 to 28, and 28 to 63, respectively.
