Hino Talks Hybrid Pricing at HTUF of Class 4/5 cabovers, including the155h and 195h diesel-electric hybrids, at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis this past March. “We have a burning desire to make the world a better place,” Shirai said in Indianapolis, citing a Hino hybrid history dating to diesel/electric buses that entered service in 1991 – the first of some 10,000 hybrid deliveries to date. “We want to make hybrids the rule for urban areas – not the exception,” he said. All of the new COEs are powered by Hino’s 5-liter J05E series engine. The hybrids employ Aisin's A465, 6-speed automatic transmission, a first in the hybrid sector. The 14,500-lb GVW 155h and 19,500-lb 195h are said to represent firsts in the U.S. Class 4 cabover space. They are “sixth-generation hybrids,” featuring nickel metal hydride battery packs by Toyota’s Primearth EV Energy (formerly Panasonic EV). Hino Trucks this past summer gave its blessing for Hino Motors president Yoshiro Shirai unveiled his firm’s new cab overengine hybrid trucks, the 155h and 195h, at NTEA’s Work Truck Show. ASTM-compliant B20 bioToyota’s Hino Trucks (Booth 712) is talking pricing for its new 155h and 195h COE (for cab over engine) hybrids here this week, paving the way for sale of the long-awaited vehicles. Dealer deliveries are to commence by year-end. Both new hybrid trucks are at HTUF – a 155h with box body and a 195h cab-and-chassis. Operators may expect fuel efficiency about 30% better than comparable diesels, says marketing and dealer operations VP Glenn Ellis. Following trials of the Hino hybrid drive with customers including the New York City Department of Sanitation, Hino Motors president Yoshiro Shirai unveiled the firm’s new line

The Heart of the Matter Hino showed a cutaway of its new trucks’ Diesel-Electric Hybrid System Power Control Unit at the National Truck Equipment Association’s Work Truck Show in Indianapolis. Features include “the world’s first Hybrid Adaptive Control System that continuously communicates with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to evaluate driving and road conditions to optimize the truck’s fuel economy and performance,” Hino says. Like parent Toyota with its popular Prius, Hino is using nickel metal hydride batteries from Primearth EV Energy.

diesel to be used for its complete line of Class 4 and 5 cab-over, and Class 6 and 7 conventional trucks. “It is our strong commitment to design and assemble trucks that are at the forefront of environmental friendliness and that help to reduce our overall dependency on foreign oils,” Ellis said of the B20 approval.

BAE Parallel Entering Trials with Crane Carrier HTUF 2011 platinum sponsor BAE Systems (Booth 313) is talking up average fuel economy gains of 30% for the new parallel version of its HybriDrive hybrid electric propulsion system. A LET2 refuse truck by Crane Carrier is the first application – and may do even better. Crane wants to bring the more fuel-efficient powertrain to the U.S. market in late 2012. After HTUF, Crane will take the HybriDrive parallel truck on a nationwide tour, with select fleets getting a chance to test it in garbage collection service, says Crane VP Glenn Pochocki. BAE said last year that it would devise a parallel version for trucks of its successful series hybrid

BAE Systems (Booth 313) has gone with an off-theshelf CX Series transmission by Caterpillar for its HybriDrive for trucks, the parallel version of its successful hybrid electric driveline for transit buses. The conventional transmission allows the BAE drive to be used in more truck models.

BAE reports an average fuel economy improvement of 30% for its parallel HybriDrive.

electric drive for buses (now 3,500-plus in service worldwide). In March, at the NTEA Work Truck Show, BAE said it would employ an Caterpillar transmission. Here at HTUF, BAE is disclosing for the first time the average fuel economy gain of 30%. The BAE drive is to be available in Crane’s COE (cab over engine) models as well as the LET2 vehicles. Pochocki notes that the parallel architecture with conventional Caterpillar transmission also allows its use in Crane LDT2 drop-chassis vehicles. (Crane is also evaluating Eaton’s HLA [for Hydraulic Launch Assist] in similar LET2 vehicles. Eaton is at Booth 404.) Fuel savings for the stop-and-go garbage collection duty cycle are expected to amount to as much as 35%, says BAE program director Mike Mekhiche. “Refuse is right at the heart of the duty cycle that the equipment is designed to perform for,” he told Fleets & Fuels. Payback? “We’re looking at three to five years, max,” for the RCV – refuse collection vehicle – market, he says. The Caterpillar CX series transmission is key to the economics of the drive, Mekhiche says. It’s a straight off-the-shelf product, he notes, with BAE software “to shift it and control it.” The average fuel economy improvement of 30% on trucks powered by the parallel system was experienced across a range of standard driving cycles, BAE says in a release prepared for HTUF. “The system performed best on stopand-go cycles where average velocity is between five and 20 miles per hour making it an optimal choice for refuse collection and delivery trucks.” Among the standard industry cycles used to carry out the track fuel economy testing, BAE says, were Hybrid Truck Users Forum, Federal

Eaton’s HLA Drive for First CNG Hybrid Sale HTUF 2011 gold sponsor Eaton (Booth 404) is providing the drive as Crane Carrier has won the race for the first commercial sale of a compressed natural gas-fueled heavy duty hybrid vehicle – Washington State’s CleanScapes has ordered two for a waste collection contract in Des Moines, just south of Seattle, for delivery early in 2012. The trucks will be Crane LET2 vehicles with Eaton’s HLA (for Hydraulic Launch Assist) parallel hybrid drivetrains. Cheaper-than-diesel CNG fuel means it will take longer for CleanScapes to amortize the HLA hybrid trucks’ higher price, says Crane VP Glenn Pochocki. But the client insisted that

6

the trucks be as clean as possible, he says. Hybrids aside, “In the last two procurements we’ve been in, we’ve bid entirely CNG,” says CleanScapes spokesman John Taylor. “Universally, our experience with CNG has just been great,” he told Fleets & Fuels. CleanScapes has approximately 100 collection trucks and about half are natural gasfueled. Maintenance costs are lower than diesels, he says, and the hydraulic hybrids, with a drivetrain that gathers braking energy (and reduces brake wear), will further reduce operating and parts replacement costs. CleanScapes operates Crane and Autocar vehicles.

Crane LET2s are also being used to test Eaton’s HLA hydraulic hybrid drive (chassis was unveiled at the HTUF 2010 ride-and-drive in Dearborn).

Test Procedure 72 (Federal Urban Drive Schedule), and the Heavy Duty-Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule. Urban cycles such as Manhattan and Orange County Transit Authority also were evaluated. “With power and torque ratings three times those of available products in the marketplace today, the superior fuel economy of the HybriDrive parallel propulsion system positions it to lead the marketplace,” Mekhiche said. BAE’s drives employ lithium ion batteries. A123 (Booth 420) now supplies the batteries for the series HybriDrive powertrain for buses. BAE has not identified its lithium ion supplier for the parallel drives for trucks. The parallel HybriDrive powertrain for RCVs is being evaluated in the UK by Dennis Eagle, also with an eye to sales late in 2012.

Autocar Offers a CNG Hydraulic Too Indiana-based Autocar announced a CNGfueled version of its E3 hydraulic hybrid, with RunWise series hydraulic drive by Parker Hannifin (Booth 819 here), at the WasteCon 2010 meeting in Boston. Meanwhile 11 diesel-fueled RunWise Autocar E3 trucks were placed with three south Florida fleets last year, and according to Parker, fuel savings have exceeded 40%. The City of Miami took deliver y of three additional E3 vehicles in June, and Austin, Texas has four of them on order.

Wineman for Dynacar Modeling

Ford 6.2-liter Super Duty

Impco Certifies Ford Bi-Fuel Upfits Impco Automotive (Booth 314), best known for its work on GM natural gas vehicles, reports U.S. EPA cer tifications of its bi-fuel compressed natural gas-gasoline upfits of 2011 model year F-250 and F-350 pickups with Ford’s 6.2-liter gaseous prepped V-8 engine. But CNG at HTUF, best known for hybrids? “It’s a good meeting,” says Jay Sandler, a veteran of multiple HTUF conclaves with Azure Dynamics. He joined Impco earlier this year and in August was named director of OEM and fleet sales. “There’s lots and lots of fleets,” Sandler told Fleets & Fuels. “It is good exposure so we decided to participate.”

Saginaw, Mich.-based Wineman Technology is promoting a new software suite for advanced vehicle design at Booth 200. The appropriately named Dynacar goes beyond mere dynamometer data to allow simulation of an entire vehicle all the way down to its tires and tread. Numerous component modeling software products are available for engineers, but according to Wineman sales and marketing VP Darryn La Zar, “No one has a full vehicle simulator.” Manufacturers have been developing critical motors and controllers “in a silo,” La Zar told Fleets & Fuels. “Automotive engineers can move away from the traditional, compar tmentalized, and inefficient testing of individual vehicle components to an integrated, customizable, and complete vehicle test environment approach that can be used through the entire vehicle development process,” Wineman Technology says. “Auto manufacturers must have a seamless development process,” Wineman Technology CEO Jim Wineman said in August, when Dynacare was released. The multi-domain and open-architecture Dynacar was developed by Spain’s Tecnalia and is being brought to market by Wineman. Func-

With Dynacar, designers can see how changes in one component will affect other parts of the car. They can even drive the virtual vehicle.

tionally, the U.S. firm explains, it is a plug-in for Wineman’s Iner tia brand test automation software and VeriStand real-time test and simulation software by National Instruments. “By using the Dynacar, combined with Inertia and NI VeriStand, test engineers have one framework for the whole process, allowing them to efficiently and rapidly prototype, implement, and real-time test vehicle components,” Wineman said. Engineers, says the company, “are now able to see how their particular components work as par t of the whole system, ultimately improving product reliability, reducing development costs, and speeding time to market.”

Vision’s Tyrano Class 8 Hydrogen Plug-in Tractor 150 kilowatts in a fuel cell transit bus. According to La Rosa, the fuel cell accounts for about $50,000 of the current $270,000 tab. “We’re trying to get these vehicles down to $200,000,” Schuermann says. The Tyrano is built on a Freightliner (Booth 300) Cascadia chassis with a 33-kilowatt Hydrogenics fuel cell, with Siemens (Booth 302) motors and driveline electronics governed by Vision software making for the equivalent of a 536-peakhorsepower (3,300 foot pounds peak torque) engine. HyPower Hits the Heights, Idling-Free

“Today we celebrate the birthplace of the hydrogen economy and zeroemission transportation,” Martin Schuermann, CEO of Vision Industries said as the first of 100 or even 400 Class 8 fuel cell tractors was delivered in July to Rancho Dominguez, Calif.-based Total Transportation Services, Inc. Terex is showing two HyPower brand battery-powered aerial lift units at Booth 500 : a TL60 and an NT29. Terex describes HyPower as a plug-in hybrid. Batteries drive an electric motor powering the hydraulic pumps for aerial lifts or digger derrick use. The installation, which is available for retrofit, allows the hydraulic pump to be powered from either the truck engine or from an electric motor/generator. “The truck engine and transmission system operate normally and

are not affected by our hybrid system,” HyPower is thus not a hybrid drivetrain for moving the vehicle, but allows work to be done onsite with the engine off. Grid power from the batteries can power tools and heating or air conditioning too. The HyPower pump is supplied by Parker (Booth 819). The electric motor that drives the pump is supplied by Parker too (Booth 718). Terex has historically used lead acid batteries to power the electric motor that drives the Parker pump, but is moving to more premium batteries as a HyPower option.

Siemens Rolls Its Own HTUF 2011 silver sponsor Siemens (Booth 302) emphasizes series hybrid electric drivetrain components, noting that only series technology, with 100% of motive power derived electrically, makes for a simple transition to all-electric or fuel cell zero-emission vehicles. Siemens notes that it’s the only player in electric drive vehicles that manufactures, rather than merely integrates, all of its driveline components. Siemens produces motors in Norwood, Ohio at one of the oldest manufacturing plants in continuous operation in the U.S. The facility covers 16 acres and 522,000 square feet, employing approximately 400 people. Siemens supplies motors for mining and ships, and railroads. It builds heavy traction

UQM for EVI Trucks for UPS UQM Technologies (Booth 314) is furnishing the key drivetrain hardware as California and federal agencies are providing funding for Stockton, Calif.-based Electric Vehicles International to supply UPS with 100 all-electric delivery trucks, marking the “largest single deployment of zero tailpipe emission delivery vehicles in the state.” Beginning in January, the trucks will be deployed in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas, and in the San Joaquin Valley. The Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp WIVs – walk-in vans – will feature the new composite body by Morgan Olson unveiled at the HTUF 2010 meeting in Michigan last year. EVI is fitting the FCCC trucks with UQM’s UQM Technologies PowerPhase HD200 PowerPhase HD200 drivetrains and lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries by EVI affiliate Valence. The battery WIVs will have a single-charge range of 90 miles and will displace an estimated 126,000 gallons of diesel per year, UPS says. “It is time to explore electric drive systems within the short-range segment of our delivery fleet,” said UPS vehicle engineering director Mike Britt. The EVI buy “is an important first step,” he said (UPS also notes that it operated EVs in New York during the 1930s). The program has some $7 million in support from California and the U.S. EPA, says EVI president Ricky Hanna. UPS now has 28 all-electric vehicles in its fleet, in New York City and in Europe, among more than 2,200 alt fuel vehicles.

Quantum’s F-150 Plug-In

HTUF 2011 silver sponsor Capstone Turbine (Booth 808) reports that its natural gas-fueled C30 and C65 microturbines meet California Air Resources Board requirements for hybrid trucks and buses – without aftertreatment. “No aftertreatment equipment allows Capstone to achieve these emission levels without impact to product efficiency, additional cost or increased vehicle weight,” the company said. “Our engineering team continues to improve the microturbine combustion and controls technology to identify simple solutions that address technically challenging environmental requirements,” Capstone executive VP and CTO Mark Gilbreth said. Capstone is using its next generation lean premix combustion technology.

Quantum is promoting its plug-in hybrid electric Ford F-150 – for which it reports hundreds of orders – at Booth 220. “The first two customers have purchased more than $14 million worth of

vehicles,” Quantum president and CEO Alan Niedzwiecki said in July as Florida Power & Light placed an order. The earlier buyer was Dow Chemical, parent of lithium ion batter y supplier Dow Kokam (Booth 312).

Dow Chemical is to take 100 of the F-150 PHEVs by the end of 2012. FP&L could with options take more than 200, Niedzwiecki said, following an initial purchase order for ten. The Quantum PHEV has a 20-kilowatthour custom Dow Kokam NMC (for nickel manganese cobalt) battery pack for an optimal combination of power and energy. “The F-150 PHEV has a 35 mile electric-only range, shifting to hybrid electric mode thereafter for a total range of over 400 miles,” Quantum says. Quantum, which also supplies compressed natural gas fuel cylinders and entire gaseous fuel systems, is working to determine the optimal platform for a CNG-fueled hybrid vehicle too.

Remy and JCI for Odyne PHEVs HTUF 2011 bronze sponsor Odyne (Booth 512) reported a master supply agreement with Johnson Controls for lithium ion batteries, and said JCI “has made a strategic investment in Odyne to fund expansion and to accelerate wide-scale commercialization of Odyne’s hybrid systems for medium and heavy duty work trucks.” Odyne later reported funding of $2.9 million for seven utility trucks in California, and said it plans to work closely with Terex (Booth 500), one of its largest distributors, and supply partner Remy Motors (Booth 506). 10

Modec, the original designer of the vehicle in Great Britain, has closed, and production tooling has been shipped from the UK for use in Indiana, says an industry source. Navistar employed drivetrains from Britain’s Zytek and lithium ion batteries from A123 (Booth 420) for the first group of U.S.-built, Modec-based vehicles, which it re-named eStar last year. The company says it is seeking new components in an effort to strike a better balance between cost and performance. Navistar also confirms that ten eStar vehicles for New York City are being leased for just $1 per year apiece in hopes they lead to further sales. “We keep building our customer list,” a spokeswoman says. The zeroemission vehicle is currently priced at about $140,000.

Sevcon Would Eliminate Rare Earths Multinational Sevcon (Booth 400) said last month that it’s leading a collaborative project to develop next generation drivetrains for hybrid and pure electric vehicles – a consortium includes UK-based Cummins Generator Technologies and Newcastle University. The automotive industry’s ability to meet demand for hybrids and EVs “is being challenged by constraints on the availability of the rare-earth magnets used in the motors that drive these vehicles,” said Sevcon president and CEO Matt Boyle. The Sevcon-led team is targeting “a new electric motor technology that uses cutting-edge power electronics to eliminate the need for magnets incorporating rare earth metals.” Separately, UQM (Booth 314) is investing $1 million as part of a $4 million U.S. DoE effort to develop non-rare earth motors. UQM is collaborating with NREL, Argonne and Oak Ridge.

New MPT Motors from Parker Parker Hannifin is promoting a new line of motors and associated controllers under the MPT badge, with applications ranging from the small units used in power steering pumps and brake compressors, all the way up to traction motors for fully electric Class 8 trucks. And while the new Parker motors are permanent magnet motors necessitating the use of costly – and China-dependent – rare earth elements, engineers have striven to minimize them. “We’ve taken out as much neodymium as possible,” says Jay Schultz, Rohnert Park, Calif.-based product manager for electromechanical automation. “We’ve done our best to minimize the amount of rare-earth material usage without sacrificing important performance metrics,” he says. Parker’s rare-earth minimization is especially true of the smallest of the new MPT motor line, a 142-millimeter-diameter product, Schultz told Fleets & Fuels. That’s because cost is especially important as Parker works to sell the motors to developers of such electric parts as power steering pumps, brake compressors, and air conditioning compressors. Those parts are also less performance-critical than a vehicle’s tractor motor, he says. The new motor line is graduated, with each of four products approximately 1.5 times larger than the one below it. Parker’s new 210mm unit is aimed at power sports applications, like motorcycles, and can also serve as

the traction motor for a neighborhood electric vehicle. The 210s work for pumps for hydraulic actuation in offroad machinery too, and for the motors that drive the hydraulic pumps in battery-operated aerial lifts. Terex HyPower lifts (page 8) employ a first-generation Parker motor, Schultz says. The third new Parker motor is 310mm in diameter, and could be the traction motor in small trucks, up to Class 3 or Class 4, depending on design. The fourth new motor is 470mm in diameter, large enough for pure battery or series hybrid electric Class 8 trucks. With 350 kilowatts – 470 horsepower – of continuous power, “You can fully replace your diesel and do everything and more a diesel can do,” Schultz says – “and get rid of the transmission.” Parker Hannifin electric is at Booth 718, back-to-back with Parker Hannifin hydraulic hybrids (Booth 819).

VP Douglas White. Dunbar, says Freightliner, is the largest privately-owned armored car service provider in the U.S. Its new hybrid is to be based in California. Freightliner hybrids have parallel electric drivetrains by Eaton (Booth 404). “Together with Eaton, we continue to enhance our hybrid solution to help companies like Dunbar maximize fuel efficiency and benefit the environment,” says Bryant.

Armored – the firm’s first hybrid in a fleet of more than 1,400 vehicles – is the first Freightliner hybrid with start-stop. Armored trucks generally idle when loading and unloading, to allow emergency departures in case of trouble. With start-stop, they don’t have to keep their engines running. The batteries provide heating and air conditioning too. “Not only do we want to offset future fuel costs, but we’re finding that our customers are also looking to us to be environmentally Business Class M2 106 has a parallel hybrid electric driveconscious,” said Dunbar fleet maintenance train from Eaton and a 6.7 liter Cummins ISB diesel engine.

KollMorgen Promotes New Inverter Family Kollmorgen is promoting its second generation inverter family for commercial hybrid and electric vehicles at Booth 514. “The focus of this new inverter family is reduced size, reduced cost, and improved reliability,” the company says. “Reliability has been improved by leveraging power stage technology from proven high volume, low voltage inver ters, allowing Kollmorgen to reduce size and weight up to 50% compared to traditional hybrid vehicle inver ters, along with significantly reduced cost.” Kollmorgen’s new inverter family consists of six models with a range of power and voltage levels. “This broad range allows OEMs to integrate consistent technology into several different vehicles, thus simplifying integration and allowing higher volume purchasing to reduce cost,” the company says.

Protean Likes Wheel Motors Wheel motors are the way to go, says UK and Troy, Mich.-based Protean Electric, promoting a new breed of “through-the-road” hybrid it says can dramatically increase fuel efficiency – and can do so on existing vehicles via a relatively easy retrofit. “It can make a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or an EV out of an existing vehicle,” says sales and marketing VP Ken Stewart. Protean says that a European General Motors Vauxhall Vivaro with Protean wheel motors showed a 300% fuel economy improvement in hybrid mode on a European drive cycle fuel test. “This is an absolute game-changer,” Stewart says. “I can easily promise 30% or better fuel economy improvement even for a full-size truck or full-size van.” Protean outfitted the front wheel-drive Vivaro with a through-the-road hybrid conversion kit – two Protean Electric PD-18 motors on the rear axle. The motors together provide torque assist of up to 1,180 footpounds (1,650 Nm) peak and 740 lb.-ft. (1,000 Nm) continuous at the rear wheels.

The installation included a 21kWh battery, yielding more than 55 miles of pure electric range, combining plug-in hybrid and EV capabilities. The system allows regenerative braking on the rear wheels with no modifications to existing front brakes, while retaining original engine and drive. “Fleet operators should be lining up for a vehicle such as this,” said Protean chairman and CEO Bob Purcell. Stewart, a veteran of GM and UTC Power, showed the Protean Vivaro for the first time in North America at a Center for Automotive Research management briefing seminar. “I’ll be

ready to talk about kits and prices in just a few months,” he told Fleets & Fuels. Protean (Booth 706) is an HTUF first-timer and a bronze sponsor of HTUF 2011. The firm received a Technology Pioneers award at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on September 1.

Protean Electric tested its wheel motors on a Vauxhall Vivaro van at Millbrook in the UK.

HVIP Sweetens the Pot “We’re making a push to entice new fleets and smaller fleets” to par ticipate in the Calstart- and California Air Resources Boardrun Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive program, says Joe Calavita of CARB. HVIP has about $12 million left for awards this year, and excess money will be carried over to next, when another $11 has been budgeted to help fleets reduce the up-front cost of buying hybrids. Next year will see an additional $10,000 for each of a given participant’s first three vouchers, Calavita says. Tom Brother ton of Calstar t notes that battery electrics will be eligible in 2012 too. Work Truck Show in Indianapolis Again Organizers of HTUF 2011 are turning their attention to Indianapolis, where the National Truck Equipment Association will hold its 48th Annual NTEA Convention March 5-8, 2012. WTS 2012 will be preceded by Calstart’s Green Truck Summit March 5-6, 2012. WTS 2011 was held in Indianapolis too. Why go back, marking the first time ever for NTEA to hold back-to-back shows in the same place? Show attendance was 10,020 – a 24% increase over 2010 and a 10% improvement over the previous record of 9,084 set in 2007, NTEA said when the dust had cleared. With 560 exhibitors (more than ever) occupying 16% more floor space than in 2010, the Work Truck Show 2011 was also the largest in the event’s 12-year history. “The Work Truck Show 2011 was our largest and most well-attended event to date,” said Frank Livas, NTEA 2012 convention chairman (he is senior VP at Brake & Clutch, Inc. of Salem, Mass.). “We’re looking forward to building on that success in Indianapolis in 2012 and beyond,” Livas said.

It’s not surprising then that NTEA has also given notice that the 2013 Work Truck Show will be held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis – where last year’s show and previous ones set attendance records. The dates are the same as 2012’s: March 5-8, 2013, including the 49th Annual NTEA NTEA senior business development director Convention. climate, biomethane, and port-freight topics. “With continued volatility in oil prices and exceptional breakthroughs in alternative fuel vehicle technologies, we’ve developed ACT Expo to be a fleet-focused, project-driven, hands-on conference that provides information, tools and connections to turn these resources into deployments,” says GNA CEO Erik Neandross. “The level of fleet interest in alternative fuel technologies has reached a fever pitch,” Neandross told Fleets & Fuels. “We are starting to see some very significant deployment projects hit the road. “Representatives from these fleet operators will be in attendance and speaking at ACT 2012.” The 2011 event “exceeded expectations on all fronts and attracted a national audience of nearly 1,500,” GNA says. Delegates took advantage of more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space. There were 119 sponsors and exhibitors and 64 vehicles on the show floor, and GNA says it expects as many as 2,000 people for ACT Expo 2012. GNA aims the show at all clean vehicles, including electric drive, gaseous Balqon battery port truck at ACT Expo 2011 fuels, and biofuels.

Enter the REEV, by EVI, with JEMS

PG&E’s Smith Newton battery electric aerial truck has separate battery systems for its driveline and Altec JEMS lift. The plug-in being developed by Electric Vehicles International is to have just one lithium iron phosphate pack.

Stockton, Calif.-based Electric Vehicles International is working with $2.5 million in California Energy Commission support and operator Pacific Gas & Electric on a new Range-Extended Electric Vehicle, based on the Ford F-550 Super Duty, for late 2012 sale. “It’s a plug-in series hybrid with batteries large enough for 45 miles,” says EVI engineering

Iveco Shows Eaton Hybrid in UK

Iveco’s Eaton-drive Eurocargo.

Iveco’s hybrid electric Eurocargo truck, which was unveiled in Germany last year, made its UK debut at the Low Carbon Vehicle show. The vehicle has a parallel hybrid electric drivetrain by Eaton and lithium ion batteries from Hitachi, says Iveco UK product director

Martin Flach. The drive enables multidrop distribution in towns and cities without sacrificing high-speed performance, Iveco says. The Eurocargo hybrid has a 16-valve, four-cylinder diesel engine with maximum rated power of 180 horsepower – and a 60-hp electric motor-generator. The battery pack has capacity of 1.9 kilowatt-hours. “We have managed to engineer all of the hybrid technology into the Eurocargo with only a 250-kilogram payload deficit over a conventional diesel-engined model,” Flach said. Fleets & Fuels, September 12 (Eaton is at Booth 404 here.)

AAA Gets Ready for EVs AAA has shown the first of a fleet of roadside assistance trucks designed to bring partial battery charges – enough to get to a charging station – to stranded electric vehicle drivers. Some trucks will carry large lithium ion batteries – charged by the truck’s own gasoline powertrain – and others a CNG-fueled generator rig as AAA evaluates various technologies for various regions. Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Green Charge Networks is AAA’s development partner. AAA will provide both Level 2 and Level 3 – up to 500 volts DC – roadLevel 3 charging to go side charging star ting in the pilot Seattle, Portland (Ore.), Knoxville (Tenn.), Tampa, San Francisco, and Los Angeles and metropolitan areas. The AAA Roadside Assistance truck unveiled at Plug-In 2011 (the meeting was held in Raleigh, N.C. in July) – a Ford F-250 with Knapheide body – features a removable lithium-ion battery pack, charged via an “upsized” Fleets & Fuels, August 1 alternator and enhanced electrical system.

director Neil McKnight. The gasoline-fueled vehicle with 6.2-liter engine is being designed for battery charge to be maintained to operate a JEMS aerial lift by Altec, to minimize work-site idling. JEMS stands for Jobsite Energy Management System. As the truck is commercialized, the battery can be made larger or

smaller according to customer specifications, McKnight says. EVI will use lithium iron phosphate batteries from its Valence Technology af filiate in Austin, Texas, and has baselined a traction motor and a generator from UQM Technologies in Colorado. Fleets & Fuels, September 26 (UQM is at Booth 314 at HTUF, Altec is at 306, Smith is at 612)

Wrightspeed Taps A123 San Jose, Calif.-based Wrightspeed, which is applying drivetrain knowhow first developed for a battery race car to Wrightspeed’s integrated motor, medium duty plug-in hybrid trucks inverter and two-speed gearbox (Fleets & Fuels, February 28), sees initial fleet tests of an Isuzu NPR-platform vehicle commencing by Christmas. Wrightspeed has developed an integrated motor-inverter-transmission unit for its drive, now tradenamed “The Route.” The company is using its proprietar y motor and controller and two-speed gearbox, and C30 Capstone turbine as a generator – diesel or compressed natural gas. “We use A123 modules and we build the battery system around them,” says CEO Ian Wright. “We’re not using any clutches at all,” he told Fleets & Fuels. “We’re synchronizing using the motor speeds and software” – something he says no one else has successfully achieved. The design is “lighter, cheaper, and more efficient,” Wrightspeed says. “We have four fleets under NDAs who all want trial vehicles as soon as they can get them,” Wright says. The list includes two large fleets and two smaller local ones. One of the small ones will likely get the first trial Wrightspeed vehicle. The Route is intended for retrofits. Bosch Rexroth HRB for NYC Macks Following successful trials showing fuel savings of as much as 25%, HTUF 2011 silver sponsor Bosch Rexroth is supplying its HRB (hydrostatic regenerative braking) drive as the New York City Department of Sanitation has ordered ten vehicles from Mack Trucks. The Department is looking to buy as many as 300 hydraulic hybrids over the course of three years, as it sees the technology as more technologically ready than electric hybrids. Bosch Rexroth has some three dozen refuse trucks of various types with the HRB drive in worldwide service.

Altec JEMS for Idle Reduction Alabama-based Altec is promoting its battery-powered (and newly trademarked) JEMS aerial lifts at Booth 306. JEMS – for Jobsite Energy Management System – allows lift trucks to operate up to an hour onsite (depending on the size of the lift) with the truck’s engine off. Optional export power can be used for hand tools. Also optional are lithium batteries replacing AGMs for more power for larger and heavier lifts. A compressed natural gas-fueled Ford F-450 (upfit by BAF) with a JEMS aerial lift was in the ride-and-drive at NTEA’s Work Truck Show in Indianapolis earlier this year.

A123 for ALTe Hybrids ALTe has named A123Systems (Booth 420) as a commercialization partner, reporting a long-term agreement for 21.6kilowatt lithium ion battery packs for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. ALTe’s plan, starting with pickup trucks, is to replace the V-8s in existing vehicles with far smaller engines while installing a hybrid electric drivetrain using “hairpin” HVH motors from Remy (Booth 506). “The powertrains will be available through a nationwide network of conversion facilities for used vehicles,” ALTe says. The firm expects to sell and license its drives to existing OEMs too.

Fiamm SoNick for Energy Batteries Fiamm is promoting its high-energy SoNick sodium nickel batteries – best known as Zebra batteries – as an economical alternative to lithium ion. The batteries have been used in electric drive cars and trucks in France, Italy, Norway, the United Arab Emirates and the UK, and in hydrogen fuel cell buses and other vehicles in the U.S. With more than 100 million miles logged, they are said to be the number one energy battery in the world. They are impervious to ambient temperature variations. HTUF bronze sponsor Fiamm SoNick is at Booth 606.

Azure Looks to Larger Ford-Based Vehicles Azure Dynamics (Booth 106) is developing a plug-in hybrid electric design for Ford’s popular F-Series Super Duty cab and chassis, starting with the F-550, “expected in early 2013.” Azure’s Transit Connect Electric An agreement with Ford also provides for Azure to apply its emerging plug-in-hybrid technology to trucks including the F-350 and F-450. The new F-Series program “furthers [the] existing business relationship between Azure and Ford that previously brought the innovative Transit Connect Electric and the E-450 Balance Hybrid Electric Step Van and Shuttle Bus to market,” Azure said. The F-550 agreement “spans all engine, frame length and regular production options and configurations,” and includes a ship-thru provision permitting Azure to place vehicles in the Ford transportation system, and Ford dealerships to sell and service the product. Azure is targeting both bus and truck markets, says business development VP Jim Trask. Design work continues and a battery supplier has yet to be chosen, he told Fleets & Fuels. Azure is using lithium ion batteries from Johnson Controls for its Balance hybrid and the pure battery electric Transit Connect (Johnson Controls has dissolved its joint venture with Saft).

Eaton Holds the Hybrid Lead “We’ll be at 200 million miles by HTUF,” says a spokesman for Eaton, a gold sponsor here this week. Eaton (Booth 404) reported 100 million miles of hybrid service at the end of 2010, and said that operators of hybrid vehicles with its drives reduced their diesel fuel consumption by some four million miles. “More than 4,500 of Eaton offers a line of EV chargers too. Eaton’s hybrid

systems are in use today on city buses, school buses, package delivery trucks, beverage delivery trucks, refrigerated deliver y trucks, refuse and recycling trucks, utility vehicles and other commercial applications,” the company said. Milestones included deliveries to customers in Asia, Australia, Europe, the UK and the U.S. Most of Eaton’s hybrid sales are for electric drive vehicles, but last year Eaton also began commercial production of its Hydraulic Launch Assist parallel hydraulic hybrid system (page 6).

Got Electricity? Thank BGE Using electricity here in Baltimore? We thought so. You may thank Baltimore Gas & Electric, the local utility and HTUF 2011 bronze sponsor. BGE reports a total count of 1,320 fleet vehicles. About 600 run on soy-based B20 biodiesel, and the Biodiesel bucket truck utility has 12 hybrid and six plug-in hybrid vehicles including cars, SUVs, pickups and bucket trucks. The PHEVs, BGE says, have been acquired “to test their performance in everyday use, educate customers on alternative fuel vehicles and support our commitment to ‘green energy’ technology. “The utility is testing these vehicles in everyday use to see how the company too can reduce its use of petroleum-based fuels and contribute to a BGE Plug-in Prius clean environment.”
