Cummins & Agility to Make NGVs Better Cummins, Inc. and Agility Fuel Systems said here yesterday “that they have entered into a strategic partnership intended to improve the natural gas vehicle user experience, and to drive adoption of natural gas as a vehicle fuel for the heavy duty truck and bus markets.”

Cummins, the distribution entity for spark-ignition natural gas engines from the Cummins Westport joint venture, is making an equity investment in Agility.

Engineers have already teamed with an eye to heavy NGVs with better fuel system-engine connections for

improved vehicle performance: integration of software and hardware between the natural gas engine and the onboard fuel storage and delivery system.

The two want to bring “a more diesel-like experience to the natural gas vehicle user,” Cummins on-highway natural gas business GM Roe East told Fleets & Fuels.

“Our goal has always been to deliver a diesel-like experience,” said Agility CEO Barry Engle. “This partnership with Cummins is a key enabler.”

Ford Flexes Its Alt Fuels Muscles Ford (Booth 1027) also said here Monday that it’s sold more than 57,000 vehicles prepped to run on CNG or propane since 2009 – “seven times more than all other major U.S. automakers combined.” Last year was the fifth consecutive year for record sales of gas-prepped vehicles, and “2015 is on track to be even stronger.”

Ford claims “the broadest portfolio of natural gas and propane offerings,” as the 5.0-liter engine for the F-150 joins the following: • 2.5-liter DOHC I-4 in the Transit Connect; • 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 in the Transit van; • 5.4-liter V-8 and 6.8-liter V-10 in E-Series (Booth 327) cutaway and stripped chassis vehicles; • Westport – CNG (Booth 748); and • 6.2-liter V-8 in F-250 and F-350 Super Duty • Venchurs Vehicle Systems, Adrian, Mich. trucks; • 6.8-liter V-10 in F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks; • 6.8-liter V-10 in F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis vehicles; and • 6.8-liter V-10 in F-650 and F-750 chassis cab.

Ford has pledged to release a gaseous-prep version of its 5.0-liter spark-ignition V-8 engine for 2016, paving the way for sales of propane autogas- and CNG-powered versions of the F-150 pickup.

The new engine, Ford says, makes it the only manufacturer of a CNG/propane-capable halfton pickup. The 5.0-liter order book will open in the fall, with F-150 vehicles available from four QVM/Qualified Vehicle Modifier upfitters: • Altech-Eco, Asheville, N.C. – CNG; • Impco Automotive – CNG and propane

Clean Energy Redeem for UPS UPS said here yesterday that it’s agreed with Clean Energy Fuels to purchase Redeem brand renewable natural gas, and that UPS fueling stations in Sacramento, Fresno and Los Angeles are to begin pumping the landfill-derived RNG this month. UPS said that the deal makes it the largest user of RNG in the U.S. shipping industry, and furthers a goal of logging one billion alt fuel and advanced technology vehicle miles by the end of 2017.

UPS and Clean Energy (Booth 1629) estimate that the three California stations will provide approximately 1.5 million gallon equivalents

annually of RNG to support nearly 400 CNGfueled UPS vehicles in California.

The pact will help grow the market for the use of methane gas from landfills as fuel, UPS said.

“Today’s RNG agreement will help mature the market for this promising alternative fuel,” said UPS senior transportation and engineering VP Mitch Nichols. “This commitment also positions UPS to use RNG in its extensive natural gas fleet which includes more than 2,500 medium and heavy duty vehicles.”

Cummins Westport Debuts ISB6.7 G Cummins Westport unveiled its latest engine, the all-natural gas, 6.7-liter, spark-ignition ISB6.7 G, at Booth 746 here yesterday evening.

Production is to commence in mid2016 at EMEP, the Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant in Whitakers, N.C. “It completes our product family,” says Cummins Westport president Rob Neitzke. The new engine complements Cummins Westport’s 8.9-liter ISL G and the 11.9-liter ISX12 G, and brings the dedicated-natural gas option to a new class of vehicles.

The first application of the ISB6.7 G will be in Type C Thomas Built school buses, Neitzke told Fleets & Fuels, mentioning yard spotters and street sweepers as other potential markets. He notes too that the base Cummins ISB powers the popular Dodge Ram diesel pick-up truck.

Like the ISL G and ISX12 G, the new ISB6.7 G is a stoichiometric engine with cooled EGR/exhaust gas recirculation and three-way catalyst. Preliminary ISB6.7 G specifications include a range of ratings up to 260 horsepower and 660 foot-pounds torque.

The Cummins Westport joint venture was formed in 2001.

“As of December 2014 we have delivered over 50,000 engines of which over 30,000 are ISL Gs,” says marketing director Jeff Campbell.

Cheap Oil? It’ll Rebound, Says Pickens If anyone can make an educated guess on the future world oil market, it’s T. Boone Pickens.

The oil magnate-turned natural gas proponent shared his sage observations on the market’s cyclical nature in yesterday’s opening plenary here at ACT Expo 2015.

“Since 1980 I’ve seen six of these collapses,” in the price of oil, Pickens said, predicting that per-barrel price would return to $70 by year-end, and hit $90 by the end of next year.

Volatile oil prices argue for investment in

domestic alternative fuels. Natural gas today is under $4. Even if it increased to $6, per-gallon fuel costs would rise only 37 cents, he said. Gaseous fuel, in other words, is very cheap.

“I have a birthday this month and I’ll be 87.

I don’t think in my lifetime I’ll see $10 natural gas again. I think I will see $8. When I see that, I can promise you, crude oil will be $150 a barrel.”

Price and the environment aside, the real reason Pickens supports natural gas – or any other domestic fuel – is that it’s American.

“Anything that’s American is good,” he said.

“I don’t like OPEC Oil. The problem with OPEC oil is you’re funding both sides of a war.”

The transition to natural gas has been slower than he expected.

“I’ve been at this since 1988 and thought it would only take three years to penetrate the market.”

Still, he said, early adopters have proven natural gas will do the job, and now’s the time to switch.

“We’re moving to it. It’s time to do it. It’s the right way to go and we’re going that way.”

Margo Oge Helps Drive the Future The Women in ACT Summit here Monday brought together some of the industry’s leading business and policy experts (who happen to be women) to discuss the bottom-line benefits of diversity in leadership in this male-dominated industry.

Among the stars was the woman widely credited as the chief architect behind the nation’s 54.5-mpg CAFE and greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger cars and light duty trucks, which were adopted in 2012.

Engineer Margo Oge was director of the U.S. EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality at the time.

Ryder Claims Leadership Role Ryder System claims the pole position in natural gas vehicle solutions for commercial transportation, with more than 30 million miles of experience, 17 NGV maintenance facilities, and more than 1,300-NGV trained technicians.

CNGci Moves Into Cylinder Assemblies

CNGci (Booth 1519) is now a unit of Germany’s Winkelmann Group, a 4,000-employee enterprise with annual revenue of more than $600 million.

Closer to home, CNGci is branching from

Type III cylinder manufacturing to fuel cylinder assemblies, bringing its 27-inch diameter tanks – the largest Type IIIs in the business – to the CNG truck sector.

“Bundling will be more important going forward,” says CNGci marketing manager Randolf Wollgiehn. “People like to have a one-stop shop.” The initial focus is on railmounted CNG cylinder assemblies. CNGci uses valves from OMB Saleri (Booth 651).

NGVAmerica Charts NGV Industry Growth

U.S. natural gas vehicles production as a whole was down 6.5% last year, but the fall-off was limited to light duty vehicles – medium and heavy duty NGVs saw significant growth, NGVAmerica reports.

NGVAmerica’s 2014 NGV Production/Sales Report is based on an annual survey of OEMs and suppliers. Among the major findings: • in 2014, NGV production/sales totaled just over 18,000 vehicles; • the heavy duty market segment grew at a healthy pace, up 30% over 2013; and • the medium duty market segment also grew steadily, up 24% over 2013.

“As the price of oil rebounds, NGVs’ economic value proposition will improve further, and when combined with the other advantages of natural gas – stable fuel prices, reliable technology and reduced emissions – sales growth will once again accelerate,” states an NGVAmerica summary.

Separately, NGVAmerica (Booth 1717) has made a new presentation available for members wishing to better address oil volatility issues.

The slide deck includes current natural gas vehicle production and sales figures.

There is an ongoing “compelling case” for NGVs, the association says: natural gas is a domestic fuel with stable pricing relative to the conventional liquids. Even with low price of oil, natural gas offers “significant savings over both diesel and gasoline.”

The basic message: the price of oil will rise again. “Current pricing is not sustainable for many oil producing nations,” NGVAmerica says.

Recently, we’ve seen a decline in gasoline and diesel prices; how has that affected propane autogas equipment sales and value proposition?

Although the low cost of conventional fuels may seem like an obstacle for the alternative fuel industry, falling gasoline and diesel prices have shown no long-term effects on propane autogas.

Historically, propane autogas pricing has proven less volatile than gasoline and diesel, giving fleet managers more stability in predicting fuel costs. Gasoline and diesel have had major price swings in the past and will again in the future. And while alternative fuels like propane autogas also fluctuate in price, they consistently track at a lower price than oil. Plus, propane autogas-powered fleets find that the fuel provides further savings due to low infrastructure, fuel, and maintenance costs over the lifetime of their fleet.

Propane autogas infrastructure is among the most affordable to install of any fuel. And, in some cases, a propane retailer may even cover some of the initial installation costs when fleets commit to a fueling contract.

When compared with diesel engines, propane autogas engines are less complex and easier to maintain. Environmental regulations require the addition of emission reduction systems to diesel engines, which result in increased maintenance, downtime, parts to replace, and even additional training needs.

Blossman Services and its affiliated Alliance AutoGas unit are taking propane autogas to the big rig sector. Their propane-diesel dual fuel equipment is on show on a Class 8 truck with 12.8-liter Volvo D13/Mack MP8 engine at Booth 305/407.

While fuel cost is important, fleets should look beyond the pump and take into consideration the total cost-of-ownership with propane autogas.

PERC has invested in a variety of propane autogas technologies over the years. Where do you see the technology going now and into the future?

The rising demand for propane autogas has driven PERC to invest in technology development of medium and heavy duty product offerings. Propane autogas is emerging as a viable alternative to complex and increasingly costly diesel vehicles.

The Roush CleanTech Ford F-650, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp’s S2G, and Alliance Autogas diesel substitution technology have opened up medium and heavy duty equipment options for fleet managers – and have presented opportunities for growth in new industries, including utility operations, people transportation, delivery, and more.

In addition to expanding product offerings, propane autogas has seen advancements in existing technology. Recently, new fueling nozzles have been introduced in the U.S. These clean, low-emissions nozzles make propane autogas fueling easier and more like conventional fueling than ever before.

As clean, American-produced propane autogas continues to see growth and customer demand, PERC will continue to invest in technology development and help the list of product offerings grow.

TruStar/ANGI as UPS Expands NGV Fleet

UPS, which revealed its plans for an LNG-fueled over-the-road truck fleet that now exceeds 1,000 vehicles at ACT Expo 2013 in Washington, said last month that it would add 1,400 heavy and medium duty compressed natural gas vehicles over the coming year, building 15 new CNG fueling facilities to support them.

TruStar Energy (Booth 827) is building the stations using Ariel compressors packaged by ANGI Energy Systems (936).

Station construction has already begun in Oklahoma City and New Orleans. Twelve of the new CNG stations for UPS are in new locations and three will replace existing, outmoded facilities.

“One of TruStar Energy’s core value propositions is our ability to design and build stations quickly and with little disruption at a customer’s location,” said TruStar sales VP Scott Edelbach.

“This works particularly well for the UPS stations, simply because their distribution centers are constantly receiving and dispatching packages,” he said.

The ANGI equipment includes NG300 and NG600 compressor packages, as well as controls, valve systems, and Fleet/Hi-Flow Series II dispensers.

Agility Fuel Systems (Booth 437) released details last month about the role it’s played in supporting UPS’s drive to be one of the leading practitioners of alternative fuel transportation in the U.S. Agility will supply compressed natural gas systems for more than half of the 800 heavy duty CNG vehicles just announced by UPS – using fuel cylinders by Hexagon Lincoln (337) – and disclosed that it also supplied the liquefied natural gas systems – using LNG tanks from Chart Industries (727) – for the existing UPS fleet of LNG trucks.

“UPS has led the industry in the adoption of natural gas in heavy duty on-road trucking and with this new order, will be operating almost 1,600 heavy duty trucks equipped with CNG or LNG fuel systems supplied by Agility,” Agility said.

“Today’s announcement is further validation of our technological leadership, innovative and space saving fuel system designs, reliability and industry-leading field support,” said Agility CEO Barry Engle.

“These trucks, once fully deployed, are projected to run more than 230 million miles annually and with Agility’s comprehensive field support, are achieving up-time results that are comparable to diesel trucks,” Agility said.

UPS now has a total of eight CNG fueling stations in California, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma.

In addition to the design and construction of the 15 new CNG stations, TruStar has been contracted to provide service and maintenance for 13 on an annual contract basis.

“We’ve continued to develop our nationwide service and maintenance group, which works hand-in-hand with our construction teams to ensure our customers stations remain productive and profitable,” said TruStar president Adam Comora. TruStar service personnel are to be dedicated to each of the UPS stations to ensure rapid response.

The FCCC vehicles will be in Class 5 and Class 6 sizes, using the company’s MT-45 and MT-55 chassis, Casteel says. They’ll have 6.0-liter GM engines with fuel systems from Landi Renzo USA (737), installed by Green Alternative Systems in Indiana. They’ll have lightweight Type IV CNG tanks.

Agility Fuel Systems (437) and Quantum Technologies (1527) are the principal suppliers of CNG cylinder assemblies for the new heavy duty trucks for UPS. Agility will use Type IV CNG cylinders from Hexagon Lincoln (337) for new 160-diesel-gallonequivalent storage modules for 445 UPS trucks.

The 27-by-80-inch tanks are fruit of Agility’s new joint venture with Hexagon Lincoln – announced at ACT Expo 2014 in Long Beach, Calif.

‘Beauty’ in Bent Fuel Lines

Bending the tubes that carry natural gas fuel to a natural gas engine can impede performance and increase the risk of failure. It’s an overlooked problem involving geometry – ovality – and physics, and can be minimized with care and planning and the use of proper materials, says AFV Natural Gas Fuel Systems GM Kevin Dickey. “The best solution can often be to re-route the tube and lessen the angle of the bend,” he said in a recent blog post, detailing the problem with reference to the diameter of the tubes being bent, wall thickness of the tube, centerline radius of the bend, ovality percentage, and ASME guidelines on the subject. “The fuel line system overall,” Dickey says, “needs to reflect the engineering thought that went into the routing and layout.” AFV is at Booth 1513.

Volvo Invests in Peloton ‘Platoon’

Volvo Group Venture Capital said last week that it’s invested in Mountain View, Calif.based Peloton Technology. Peloton develops vehicle technologies that deliver safety and fuel savings to fleets in the trucking industry, notably an integrated safety, efficiency and analytics platform for truck platooning. “The Peloton system electronically couples trucks through a combination of vehicle-to-vehicle communications, radar-based active braking systems and proprietary vehicle control algorithms,” Volvo says, noting that a study of the Peloton system by NACFE, the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (Booth 1450), showed fuel consumption reductions of 10% for the rear commercial vehicle and by more than 4% for the front vehicle. Workhorse Amps It Up for 2015 Workhorse Group – the name was officially changed from Amp last month – has brought its E-Gen range-extended electric vehicle chassis to ACT Expo 2015, along with the HorseFly package delivery drone. Workhorse is at Booth 1430.

The drone, integrated with a Workhorse delivery truck, may help the company as it vies for a huge piece of business with the U.S. Postal Service. The Post Office has included Workhorse/ Amp among 15 companies that will receive RFPs for a huge vehicle buy: approximately 180,000 vehicles, costing $25,000 to $35,000 apiece, to replace the current aging fleet, with deliveries commencing in late 2017 or early 2018 and running as long as seven years.

It’s “the largest one-time purchase of vehicles in the history of the world,” says Workhorse CEO Steve Burns. The Post Office has said it wants its new vehicles, which are to last 20 years, to accommodate future delivery trends. “The HorseFly is an intriguing part of the future,” Burns says.

Closer to Earth, Workhorse spread the news last week that it’s delivered the first two E-Gen

trucks to “a major transportation company.”

Burns said his firm is “thrilled that the electric vehicle is making deliveries to customers in the field.”

Here in Texas, the Houston-Galveston Area Council is supporting the placement of 18 Workhorse trucks with UPS, with deliveries slated for later this year.

Workhorse is promoting a new e-truck design, based on the 88-inch W-88 chassis, using a single, 200-kilowatt Sumo brand motor, from Canada’s TM4. With 2,200 nm torque, “It’s so strong it doesn’t need a transmission,” Burns says.

The one-motor design saves money, with the motor available to serve as a generator to charge the truck’s 60-kilowatt-hour, Panasonic 18650 lithium ion cell-based battery pack. Workhorse is using a 2.4-liter engine from Power Solutions International (Booth 419) as a range-extender.

“The engine’s only going to come on at rare times,” Burns says, as he expects the E-Gen truck to be able to complete most work days on a single charge. Range is stated at 60 miles. Burns says

that if a driver needs a boost, the truck can be left in charge mode for a minute or two at a time at package delivery stops, to get through the day.

Wrightspeed Adds Its Own Turbine “Powerful like a jet, and clean like a windmill,” says California’s Wrightspeed (Booth 1127), describing the new, fuel-versatile Fulcrum turbine engine it’s making an intrinsic part of its Route brand plug-in hybrid electric driveline for trucks.

“Wrightspeed now owns 100% of the Intellectual Property of its powertrain products,” the company says. “Each component of every Wrightspeed powertrain is engineered from the ground up to systematically deliver ideal performance.”

The 80-kilowatt Fulcrum weighs just 250 pounds, about one-tenth the weight of an equivalent piston engine. It is designed to have a 10,000 hour lifetime, and to meet California Air Resources Board emissions limits with no catalytic converter.

And, because the turbine serves only to charge the battery pack on Wrightspeed’s series driveline, it can run at its cleanest and most efficient operating point: “We don’t care about its efficiency at idle,” says Wrightspeed founder and CEO Ian Wright – dismissing a chronic problem for automotive turbines.

“We believe turbines will begin to replace piston engines in range-extended electric vehicle applications,” he says.

“This is an inflection point,” Wright told Fleets & Fuels. “You’re going to see turbines take over in wheeled vehicles the way they took over in aircraft.”

Wrightspeed placed two of its trucks with Capstone turbines with FedEx last year, and according to Wright, the 25 additional vehicles on order will have the Fulcrum turbine.

Likewise, 17 model year 20032006 Freightliner and Condor collection trucks operated by the Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Ratto Group will be converted to PHEV operation using the Fulcrum. The project has a double environmental benefit in that fuel will be saved and trucks that would otherwise be junked will instead be kept working, says COO Lou Ratto. “GNA pays for itself,” McGough says. “We charge clients for this work, but we get them lots of funding.”

“Timing is key,” she notes. More than 500 funding programs are updated on a regular basis, allowing applicants to be ready when solicitations are launched. “This is huge for our clients.”

It’s also important for the agencies. If they don’t get applicants, those programs can be discontinued. GNA’s vigilance helps make sure they are not.

Fastech’s First of 50 California-headquartered Fueling and Service Technologies, which provides natural gas fueling station construction services, has received the first several of 50 Dodge Promaster vans converted to natural gas operation by World CNG (Booth 1721).

The CNG vans “will provide our organization with a competitive edge by reducing our operating expenses largely due to the high mpg and lower cost of fuel,” says Fastech’s construction manager Tim Caldwell. Fuel is furnished by Clean Energy (Booth 1629). Fastech is at Booth 1305.

In addition to writing grants, GNA helps awardees with the reporting requirements that grant money entails. “We make it nice and easy,” McGough says. Hence the term, “Grant Guru.”

“Raven is rising to the challenge to move our

The new fleet “will operate on irregular routes originating from production plants and distribution centers in the Southeast and is forecasted to consume approximately 2.4 million additional DGEs of LNG annually,” Clean Energy said.

The fuel provider says it will make LNG available to Raven at new outlets in Atlanta, in Pearl, Miss., and in Birmingham and Theodore, Ala. “The natural gas fueling ecology continues to strengthen as America’s largest shippers and their logistics companies transition to natural gas,” said Clean Energy VP Chad Lindholm. “It becomes increasingly feasible for fleets hauling in the Southeast and beyond to make the switch to natural gas,” he said.

“Transport will continue to drive adoption of alternative fuels, impacting the entire transportation industry,” said Rush chairman, CEO and president Rusty Rush.

Landi Launches Electronic Regulator Landi Renzo USA promises to release its electronic pressure regulator for natural gas vehicles to the U.S. market. Separately, Landi reports California Air Resources Board certification of its dedicated-compressed natural gas system for Ford F-250/350 series trucks with the 6.2-liter engine for 2016.

“We are releasing a piece of innovative technology that will deliver immediate and tangible benefits to our customers by virtually eliminating several limitations affecting the conventional systems,” Landi Renzo USA engineering VP Marco Genova says of the EPR. “Customers will be pleased with the new standard of performance achievable with the electronic pressure regulator,” he said, “in particular during cold engine starts at very low ambient temperature, with the compact packaging and the level of integration achievable with the engine and vehicle control system.”

The EPR features electronic control of optimal output pressure depending on specific engine and/or ambient conditions, compatibility with the flow rates required for heavy duty applications, ambient temperature operation with no heating required, and closed loop control of output pressure with high dynamic response and no performance drift.

The EPR can improve vehicle range, Landi says – possibly allowing for more economical fuel cylinder packages.

Landi will phase in the new EPR, starting with Ford F-450/550 series vehicles with the 6.8-liter V-10.

Approval of the Ford F-250/350 with 6.2liter engine for 2016 allows Landi to provide a less-than-14,000-pound GVWR pickup and cab chassis solution in CARB-regulated states, augmenting a product line-up that already includes Ford F-450/550, F-650, E-450 cutaway, and F-53/59 stripped chassis vehicles, and multiple GM vehicles with the 6.8-liter engine. Landi is at Booth 737.

Penske Leases, Penske Supports Penske Truck Leasing is showing a CNG-fueled Freightliner Cascadia tractor in Booth 626, one of about 250 in the company’s fleet.

Penske also counts approximately 128 airport and parking facility buses it maintains under contract, and a fleet of some two dozen propane autogas-powered delivery vehicle it maintains for Alpha Baking in Chicago.

Greenkraft Shows a Tri-Fuel The new G-series line of CNG- or propane autogas-powered, cab-forward trucks by Southern California’s Greenkraft is being promoted by Superior Transportation Solutions at Booth 102. The trucks are available with 6- or 8-liter GM engines, with CNG fuel capacities ranging from 20 to 60 GGEs. Austin-based STS is Greenkraft’s exclusive distributor for Texas.

On show here is a unique demonstrator vehicle with gasoline, propane and CNG fuel systems – effectively a tri-fuel.

Greenkraft is also preparing a plug-in hybrid electric offering with propane autogas or CNG for range extension.
