Kevin Beaty Takes HTUF Helm “The clean transportation technology field has never been more important or complex than it is today. I believe Calstart is uniquely positioned to partner with industry and government to help drive this market forward.”

That’s the word from Kevin Beaty, who is attending his first HTUF in his new job as Calstart VP and HTUF director. He’s well known for hybrid vehicles at Eaton – and perhaps less well known for more than ten years with the Southwest Research Institute and with Woodward Governor, specializing in natural gas vehicles.

His priority? Help shake up an industry he says deserves better times.

Beaty talks not about hybrids versus natural gas, nor EVs versus propane, but about clean tech vehicles as a whole.

“The clean tech industry for commercial vehicle transportation really has not been as effective as those of us who have been active for awhile would have expected or desired,” he says. “The industry is at a point where some reflection and original thinking is needed, to unlock a better recipe.”

“We need some fresh thinking and we need to keep a sense of urgency.”

One way to do that, he says, is to help fleet professionals better understand the choices they have throughout the whole range of clean tech vehicles.

New TARDEC Leaders Too

Plug-In F-150 from Quantum California’s Quantum Technologies has brought two Ford F-150 pickups outfitted for plug-in hybrid electric operation – one for Booth 403 and one for the Thursday ride-and-drive. The parallel hybrid architecture affords single-charge, all-electric range of 35 miles.

Paul Rogers assumed his new role as director of TARDEC, the Army’s Tank Automotive, Research, Development and Engineering Center, in August.

Earlier this year, David Thomas took the top job at TARDEC’s National Automotive Center unit, replacing Paul Skalny, who retired from NAC in 2011.

NAC is building on a 20 year history of partnerships with the domestic auto industry and energy community, the Army said. “NAC will continue to serve as the Army’s focal point

for the development of dual-use automotive technologies and their application to military ground vehicles,” Thomas said.

At TARDEC, “We are going to face some strategic conditions that will challenge us over the next year or two,” said Rogers. “We have budget pressures and major programs that are transitioning from production to sustainment,” he said – issues that affect the U.S. industrial base itself.

TARDEC Lt. Col. Glenn Kerley is slated to speak at the Military Activities for Technology Acceleration session early Wednesday afternoon, and TARDEC’s Adam Puzzouli will appear at the Under Construction session late Wednesday.

Hino Sets Hybrid Launch Plan Hino Trucks, which last year saw the U.S. debut of its new cabover trucks including the hybrid electric 195h COE delayed behind a strong Japanese yen, has advised that the vehicles will be arriving at qualified Hino dealerships across the country this autumn. The 19,500 GVW trucks feature 210 horsepower and 440 foot-pounds of torque from Hino’s 5-liter J05E Series engine.

“Over the past several months, the management team at Hino has monitored the truck market rebound, the U.S. economy, and foreign currency exchange rates to develop a plan that supported our customers and dealers in the short term, while sustaining a business model for the long term,” said marketing VP Glenn Ellis.

“With these factors in mind, the introduction of the cab-over truck is on track.”

Hino dealers will have an opportunity to reach new customers as the Toyota unit establishes itself “as the measure of quality, durability, reliability and hybrid technology in the cabover market,” the company says.

Hino notes that the new trucks meet 2010 emission standards with no SCR (selective catalytic reduction).

California will be the first state to get the 195h hybrid.

Eaton for Hybrids and for NGV Fueling Eaton, which has supplied the lion’s share of hybrid electric drivelines for commercial heavy duty vehicles, has just publicized a new effort to reduce their cost.

BAE (Booth 113), after fielding thousands of series hybrid electric HybriDrive drives in heavy duty transit buses, launched a parallel version for trucks at HTUF 2010 in Dearborn, Mich. The firm has since named Remy as its motor supplier and Caterpillar for an off-the-shelf transmission that both reduces costs and allows the drive to be used in a wider range of vehicle types.

The $2.5 million project is funded jointly between Eaton (Booth 101) and a grant from the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E). The goal is to reduce the size of the battery by 50% and improve the total performance of the system and its charge rate while maintaining fuel economy and overall vehicle performance.

The battery project is the second to be back by ARPA-E in recent weeks. Eaton also has a $3.4 million grant to develop affordable home refueling stations for natural gas vehicles.

Eaton teams in Southfield and its Advanced Hydraulics group in Eden Prairie, Minn., in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, are to devise a fueling system unit that uses liquid, acting as a piston, to compress natural gas. “Innovative heat exchanger technology will improve efficiency and cut cost dramatically,” Eaton says. The firm says that that its prototype will be available before the end of 2015 with a target production price of $500.

“Innovative projects like these have the potential to make natural gas vehicles more affordable and convenient for every American family and revolutionize the way we commute,” said Dane Boysen, who directs DOE’s Methane Opportunities for Vehicular Energy (MOVE) program.

“My hope is that these advanced technologies will enable us to use our abundant domestic supply of natural gas for transportation, diversifying our nation’s fuel and refueling portfolio for the future.”

Terex HyPower Retrofits

Terex just this month introduced the “Tru-Level” tilting pedestal system for its aerial lifts. The device allows for operation on slopes of up to 20%. It relieves operators stress and improves safety, and decreases stress on the rotation gearbox, thus extending component life. It is fully compatible with the HyPower battery lift.

Terex Utilities (Booth 417) is now offering its battery-operated, and hence idle time-slashing HyPower aerial lifts for retrofit. “Not only is this a less expensive option, but it’s also a faster way for customers to meet their company’s green initiatives,” says national accounts manager Nick Cammisa.

The system helps customers save fuel and reduce exhaust emissions while allowing operators to function in a relatively quiet work environment, a benefit for noise sensitive job sites.

UQM’s PowerPhase HD 220 Colorado’s UQM Technologies is promoting its new PowerPhase HD 220, a driveline package with “the most powerful electric motor that UQM has ever manufactured” and an all-new controller designed specifically for the commercial vehicle market.

The PowerPhase HD 220 delivers 700 Nm of peak torque with 220 kilowatts peak and 120 kilowatts continuous power (160 horsepower).

It is “market-ready,” UQM says.

Commercial vehicles powered by existing UQM drives include Hino electric city buses, Proterra electric composite transit buses, all-electric medium-duty truck and walk-in delivery vans for UPS by Electric Vehicles International, and Boulder EV delivery vans for Federal Express.

UQM is also promoting its PowerPhase Pro 100 and PowerPhase Pro 135 electric propulsion systems at Booth 401.

More Parker Hannifin Hydraulic Hybrids Parker Hannifin, supplier of the heavy duty RunWise hydraulic hybrid drivetrain, reports average fuel savings of more 43% – with 99% uptime – validated behind more than a year of testing for refuse collection in south Florida.

The company has supplied the RunWise drive for Autocar E3 refuse vehicles in Florida, North Carolina, Indiana, Texas and California.

“We have six that have been running for more than 15 months,” Danny Diaz of Miami-Dade County said earlier this year. “They’ve exceeded our expectations.” Miami-Dade is using a U.S. EPA Emerging Technology grant to offset the incremental cost of further vehicles.

Separately, a less powerful variant of the Parker drive is being tested in Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp package delivery trucks by FedEx Ground, Purolator Courier, and UPS – all members of Calstart’s HTUF parcel delivery working group.

The Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp vehicles with Morgan Olson bodies have hydraulic hybrid drivelines from Parker Hannifin, integrated and assembled by FCCC. “Parker’s onboard controller incorporates an advanced engine-off strategy to minimize unnecessary run time,” says Calstart. “Fuel use can be reduced by 40% or better fuel economy based on route profile.”

Parker says that the Miami-Dade Autocar E3s with the heavy duty RunWise hydraulic hybrid burn some 36 gallons of fuel per day compared with other vehicles in the fleet which use 63 gallons. Brake energy recovery for the RunWise hydraulic system is 71%, as compared with just 21% for a hybrid electric, Parker’s Tom DeCoster said at this year’s NTEA-Calstart Green Truck Summit in Indianapolis (he’s speaking here too; see box at right).

Also operating pre-production RunWise E3s in Florida are the cities of Hialeah and Miami.

According to Parker, Miami has purchased five additional Autocar E3s “after operating one truck on city routes during the past year and witnessing close to 50% fuel savings.”

The City of Manteca, Calif. is to take delivery later this year of two new Autocar E3 refuse trucks with the RunWise drive. The Autocar ACX64-based vehicles are the first AutocarParker hydraulic hybrids for California. Manteca is paying $409,000 each for the trucks, reflecting a price premium of about $125,000 over a straight ACX64. Manteca is getting $250,000

Operators have reported positive driving experiences and increased route productivity too, Parker says. “The hybrid is faster, more dependable, experiences less noise in the cab and has not encountered any problems,” Miami operator Scotty Rodgers said in a Parker’s announcement.

Santa Cruz to Test Autocar Trio The City of Santa Cruz, Calif. will test three different Autocar trucks to see how compressed natural gas and a hydraulic hybrid drive compare with straight diesel.

Santa Cruz has ordered three Autocar trucks: the latest Xpeditor model fueled by diesel, another fueled by natural gas, and the third

an E3 variant (diesel-fueled) with the RunWise heavy duty series hydraulic hybrid drive by Parker Hannifin (Booth 107).

“We’re going to compare the three different technologies in both emissions and fuel economy,” says Paul Soderstrom of Santa Cruz.

XL Hybrids Is Using JCI Battery Packs In line with a strategy of using top-drawer components for its modest hybrid vans, Massachusetts’ XL Hybrids disclosed last month that it will use new battery packs from Johnson Controls, Inc. when it enters production in early 2013.

The JCI packs with high-power, spiralwound lithium nickel cobalt aluminum cells represent a refinement of the battery packs in the XL Hybrids vans currently in trials. They are “based on an off-the shelf module with some customization,” says XL co-founder and supply chain VP Clay Siegert.

XL, which has brought a truck and is exhibiting at Booth 119 here, let the world know in May that it was using motors from Parker Hannifin (Booth 107).

XL is developing economical upfits – costing about $8,000 – of GM vans, yielding fuel savings of better than 20%. The idea is to offer fleets significant savings while keepings costs down, all the while maintaining high quality and reliability.

“Our strategy is to source our components from Tier 1 auto suppliers,” says XL co-founder and business development VP Justin Ashton. “It really does reduce our risk.”

The new battery pack has 1.8 kilowatt-hours of energy storage and, more importantly, a peak discharge power rating of 50 kilowatts with a nominal 260 volts. “Short bursts of high power are important,” says Siegert. The new pack will be fully developed and launched from Johnson Controls’ lithium ion facility in Holland, JCI sees ‘a compelling business case’ for XL’s modest hybrids.

Wrightspeed Brings a CNG Plug-In California’s Wrightspeed has brought a compressed natural gas turbine-powered plug-in hybrid electric truck to HTUF 2012.

The San Jose-based firm is in line for nearly $5.8 million from the California Energy Commission development “The Route” plug-in.

“The grant funds will accelerate manufacturing of Wrightspeed’s Route retrofit powertrain for the surprisingly large medium duty commercial fleet market, which boasts 2 million trucks in the U.S. alone,” the company says.

Wrightspeed (Booth 201) is working with the Isuzu NPR platform, and saw efficiency rise from about 12 miles per gallon in testing with a metro drive cycle, to 25 to 40 miles per gallon (on a cost equivalent basis, drive cycle-dependent) with its drivetrain.

Wrightspeed says it raised some $10 million in private investments during 2010 and 2011, some of which was used as matching funds for the company’s prior CEC grant of $1.2 million.

The Motiv RTS “is unique to the industry,” the company says, “as it provides real-time, secure, wireless data connectivity of the shuttle bus with the Motiv cloud.

“The RTS monitors operations such as performance, battery charge, route, component health and vehicle status to provide detailed analytics to fleet operators for preventive maintenance and service.”

“The Motiv demo bus is the first all-electric vehicle to feature this level of detail in real-time monitoring, as well as function with two different sets of batteries in a single powertrain,” Castellez says. “This demonstrates the mixand-match component feature of the ePCS and allows for battery sets to be compared in real world environments.”

Emerald Automotive Unveils the t-001

The t-001 extended-range electric van from Missouri- and UK-based Emerald Automotive is making its official U.S. debut at Booth 413.

“We have worked extremely hard over the past three years to develop an all-new, light weight, advanced technology vehicle to serve global fleet operators,” says Emerald CEO Andy Tempest.

“The t-001 will reduce fuel use, cut emissions and save our customers money, without compromising performance,” he said.

“We announced several months ago that two prototypes had been built and now we are eager to share these vehicles with the public.”

Emerald describes its flagship t-001 as an all-new lightweight, extended-range hybrid electric delivery vehicle, which can achieve more than 100 miles per gallon on a typical duty cycle and has a range of 475 miles per fueling.

It also reduces emissions by 80% with a payload of 3,000 pounds, “without compromise on performance.”

With a 25 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack and 75-kilowatt motor, the vehicle is to have a battery-only range of 66 miles.

Emerald, with its U.S. headquarters in Hazelwood, Mo., is the development and production

company bringing the UK-designed t-001 van to market. Emerald cites firms like Revolve Technologies, Ricardo, Rinehart Motion, the Advanced Composites Group, Evo Electric and the UK’s Axeon (lithium ion battery technology) among its technical partners.

UK Fuel cell specialist Intelligent Energy is named as a commercial partner, along with numerous financial organizations.

The project in an earlier form was publicized nearly two years ago at EVS-25, the world electric vehicles show in Shenzhen, China. Intelligent Energy indicated that it wanted to develop a state-of-the-art electric vehicle platform that would be suitable for hydrogen fuel cell propulsion for the day when fuel cells become economically viable.

“Now that we have a road-ready vehicle that is being driven and tested, the level of interest we are seeing both from customers and investors has increased exponentially,” Tempest said.

“The global fleet market has been calling for a long range, low emission, large payload product for some time, but so far no vehicle has been developed that can meet those needs without compromise.

“We are ready to serve that market with the all new t-001,” he said.

“Private investment interest in Emerald recently prompted the company to withdraw its application from the Department of Energy Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Loan Program, not wanting progress to be hindered by any restrictive program,” Emerald said late last month in announcing the t-001’s HTUF 2012 debut.

Emerald last year reported a $5 million loan approval from the City of Hazelwood and the Missouri Technology Corporation.

Pi Innovo for Innovative Controls England- and Michigan-based Pi Innovo is promoting its expertise in electronic controls development at Booth 706.

The firm emphasizes OpenECU, described as a wide range of adaptable, field-ready products and intellectual property designed to accelerate electronics system development. Pi Innovo offers a range of ECU (engine control unit) development options and strategies, with strong OBD compliance attributes.

The firm claims expertise in control systems for pure electric and electric hybrid vehicles.

“Technologies include hybrid combinations of battery power with gasoline, diesel and fuel cell power sources,” the firm says – noting that it has worked with hydraulic hybrid systems as well.

Late last month, Pi Innovo said it had achieved Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute Maturity Level Three for its CMMI for Development version 1.3. CMMI stands for Capability Maturity Model Integration, “a process improvement approach for software-intensive systems.”

Siemens Promotes eHighway Catenary Concept Siemens, with the support of California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District and development partners including DaimerMercedes, is proposing a new type of heavy duty hybrid based on a very old concept – electricity from overhead catenary wires.

Siemens (Booth 109) calls the concept eHighway, and says it’s “a cost-effective alternative to the use of fossil fuels in freight transport on the road.”

The idea is to outfit trucks with a hybrid drivetrain, likely a series drive, and power them with electricity from overhead lines along high-traffic highways in the population-dense areas adjacent to major ports. When the trucks reach the end of the overhead lines, they switch to fossil fuel to complete their delivery or transfer missions.

When close to their home ports, hybrid electric drayage tractors would draw 100% of their power from overhead catenary wires, just as city trolleys have done since the 1800s.

“The concept combines innovation with extensive experience because it is based on proven railroad technologies from Siemens,” Siemens says. Siemens has also furnished motors and controls for thousands of transit buses with drives from BAE Systems (Booth 113).

The concept is also known as Zetech, for Zero Emission Truck and Electric Catenary Highway. The Santa Monica-based Gladstein, Neandross & Associates consultancy recently completed a Zetech analysis for SCAQMD, and 12

Both Calstart and GNA focused on the I-710 corridor leading from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Calstart said it sees 2035 as the “horizon year” for implementation: “The commercialization process for a complex product like a Class 8 truck includes significant engineering and development work, including demonstration and validation of early prototypes, building a small number of pre-production vehicles, and constructing a business case for moving to full production over the course of several years,” Calstart says. “It is not advisable to jump directly to the desired outcome because competing technologies must be evaluated, tested, proven, and commercialized.”

Both Calstart and GNA focused on the I-710 corridor leading from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, a congested road due for upgrading anyway and thus a good candidate for the installation of catenary power. ‘The I-710 Corridor has high levels of health risks related to high levels of diesel particulate emissions, traffic congestion, high truck volumes, high accident rates, and many design features in need of modernization,’ Calstart said.
