Hino Brings a Hybrid to the U.S. Market Hino Trucks took bold strides into the U.S. market yesterday, announcing a new line of Class 4/5 cabovers, including two diesel-electric hybrid variants, a first in the U.S. Class 4 cab-over space. “We have a burning desire to make the world a better place,” proclaimed Hino Motors president Yoshiro Shirai, in making the announcement here Tuesday, citing a hybrid history dating to diesel/electric buses that entered service in 1991 – the first of some 10,000 hybrid deliveries to date. Hino (Booth 4131) said pricing for the 155 and 195 straight diesels will be competitive with the market, and the targeted payback for the 155H and 195H hybrids is five years at today’s fuel prices.

Hino will begin taking orders in May for delivery to dealers in August for the diesels, and September for delivery to dealers in December for the hybrids, which will initially be introduced in California, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The company refers to the trucks as sixth-generation hybrids. They feature nickel metal hydride battery packs made by Toyota’s Primearth EV Energy (formerly Panasonic EV) that is essentially the same as the battery pack in the Lexus GS Hybrid. The company is investing some $500 million per year in R&D. “We want to make hybrids the rule for urban areas – not the exception,” Shirai said.

The Green Truck Ride-and-Drive More than 21 clean and efficient trucks are in the National Truck Equipment Association’s Green Truck Ride-and-Drive, which continues this afternoon from noon to 4:30. B5 biodiesel fuel is being provided by Indiana’s Countrymark Co-op, which processes all of its petroleum products from Illinois Basin – All-America Crude. —more Green Truck Ride-and-Drive on pages 8-9

Cutting-Edge Green Solutions for the Work Truck Industry

NTEA executive director Jim Carney

What will the work trucks of tomorrow look like? How will they use less fuel, produce fewer emissions and help their operators work more efficiently? These are only a few of the many questions companies are faced with as they determine how to grow their businesses in new areas while being environmentally responsible. The Green Truck Summit has provided a look into the future of work trucks and delivered shared experiences regarding utilizing existing green technology.

The Green Truck Summit, held annually in conjunction with The Work Truck Show, brings awareness to cutting-edge green solutions at the forefront of technology, and has become the leading educational forum on how the “green revolution” impacts vocational trucks. Now in its fifth year, the Summit has achieved a new attendance record and has gained national and international recognition for its distinguished speakers and industry insights. For the second year in a row the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) is proud to be coproducing this flagship event in conjunction with CALSTART. This day-and-a-half conference has provided work truck industry professionals with a wealth of information. During the conference top industry experts and “early adopter” fleet managers shared their insights, lessons learned, and the solutions for implementing green technologies. The Summit highlighted aspects of both current and future green technologies, regulatory

issues, fleet sustainability and the results of real-world deployment in fleet operations. Many of the Green Truck Summit’s offerings were tailored to address today’s growing interest and demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies. To support the work truck industry’s growing interest in green solutions and advanced technology, the NTEA launched a new affiliate division—The Green Truck Association (GTA) in 2010. The GTA was formed from the expressed interest of NTEA members and other industry professionals in the technical aspects and ROI of integrating sustainable technologies into work trucks built across North America. Since its formation, the GTA has grown to nearly 100 member companies, including fleets, upfitters, equipment manufacturers, technology producers and truck OEMs. The Association has already initiated work to help shape the regulations that will affect our industry in the future. Held in conjunction with the

GTS, the Work Truck Show features the latest in green products from more than 45 companies engaged in the green truck industry. Everything from alternative fuels and battery technology to clean and efficient auxiliary power units were featured at the show. In the work truck arena, sustainable technology has moved beyond the experimental stage to a universal focus on economical real-world deployment. We hope you have enjoyed a rich learning experience and that the next few days provide you the opportunity to accomplish your business objectives. We are interested in hearing your insights on how the NTEA and the GTA can support your organization. Please stop by the NTEA booth #3401 to meet the staff and explore the services offered by the association. Sincerely, Jim Carney NTEA Executive Director

BAF’s CNG for Knapheide & Altec (and Sortimo) Compressed natural gas fuel systems from BAF Systems, a unit of Seal Beach, Calif.-based Clean Energy Fuels, may be seen on trucks by Knapheide Manufacturing, Altec Industries and Sortimo NA. Clean Energy announced late last month that Knapheide (Booth 3741) had picked BAF as the exclusive provider of its proprietary, dedicated-CNG fuel systems for Knapheide-configured Ford service body vehicles, primarily Ford F-350 and F-450 trucks. “The agreement will expand opportunities for both our companies to meet the growing demand across America for clean-burning, natural gas-powered Ford service vehicles,” said BAF president John Bacon. “BAF is the first CNG vehicle upfitter in the United States to be named a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier for gaseous fuels, and we are honored to provide our CNG fuel system capabilities to Knapheide, a manufacturer long

recognized for its high-quality products.” “We see a great opportunity to provide work-ready CNG solutions for our Ford customers on many different platforms,” said Knapheide engineering VP Chris Weiss. Clean Energy noted that Quincy, Ill.-based Knapheide has been in operation for 163 years, and is the leading U.S. producer of steel service truck bodies and platform/stake truck bodies. The firm has upwards of 120 distributors. In addition to work trucks, BAF can convert Ford-platform taxis, vans, pickups and shuttle buses to CNG. BAF has certified its natural gas vehicles under both U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board regimes, achieving SULEV – super ultra low emission vehicle – emissions levels. Altec (Booth 4875) has brought a Ford F-450 bucket truck with a BAF fuel rig to today’s ride-and-drive. It’s a “double-green:” the vehicle is out-

BAE Taps Cat for Hybrid Drive BAE Systems formally kicked off its effort to bring its HybriDrive hybrid electric vehicle technology to Class 6, 7, and 8 vocational trucks, naming Caterpillar as its partner for transmissions.

BAE is targeting Class 6,7, and 8 vocational trucks with its new parallel hybrid electric drivetrain.

“Vocational truck fleets that transition to our heavy-duty HybriDrive system will experience fuel savings not before seen in these truck classes,” said BAE power and energy management VP Steve Trichka. “Our HybriDrive parallel system is the optimal hybrid electric solution for vehicles that operate in diverse duty cycles beyond standard urban operational modes.” BAE (Booth 5359) has placed upwards of 3,000 of its series hybrid electric drives in transit buses,

mostly in North America and more recently in Europe, and said last year it is developing a parallel variant for trucks. The buses have logged more than 200 million miles of revenue service, and saved more than 10 million gallons of diesel fuel, BAE says. For trucks, the new parallel system is aimed at vehicles with duty cycles that require higher operating speeds and less frequent stops. BAE will start with an automatic Caterpillar transmission and will later add automatic manual, said programs, power and energy management director Mike Mekhiche. BAE uses lithium ion batteries for its series drives for buses, and will use lithium ion batteries for the new parallel truck drives too, with suppliers to be named in the coming months, Mekhiche said. The battery for trucks will likely employ a slightly different chemistry than the A123 batteries used for the buses, he said. BAE’s hope is that “the product becomes a standard offering from OEMs,” Mekhiche said. The strategy is for upcoming trials to create “end-user pull.” The new parallel drive is being demonstrated on a Freightliner M2 in the rideand-drive.

Fuso Offers EPA 10: Next Truck a Hybrid? Daimler’s Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp, which has placed approximately 1,000 hybrid electric trucks in Japan since 2006 and has also placed product in Australia, Hong Kong, and Ireland, introduced a new vehicle called the EPA 10: “It is an all new design and revolutionar y product with a 3-liter engine equipped with an automated mechanical transmission which will deliver class leading lower cost of ownership,” says sales VP Mike Rumsey. “This EPA 10 product is built on the same chassis for the entire world and the 4P10 engine platform is common to the Nor th American market and other markets around the world where MFTBC is beginning to introduce the Canter Eco Hybrid,” Rumsey told F&FST. “At this time we do not have definite plans to introduce a hybrid in the North American market, but this change in engine platform and introduction of the EPA 10 product is a big step for us.” Mitsubishi Fuso said last year in Japan that it would open a specialized hybrid test bench at its Kitsuregawa Proving Ground in Japan.

If a U.S. OEM Builds It, Chicago Will Come: to a Battery Electric Garbage Truck The City of Chicago is keenly interested in fielding all-electric refuse trucks as part of its long-term plan to reduce fuel costs and emissions – but only if it can buy the vehicle from a U.S. manufacturer. “We’re watching this intently and we want the first electric refuse truck,” said Matt Stewart, senior automotive equipment analyst with the City of Chicago’s department of fleet management. “Someone has to start selling them here first, and then we’ll be the first in line to buy,” he said. Stewart shared his views in a joint presentation with Mira Inbar, business development manager for Dow Kokam (Booth 5350), which is providing batter y packs for all-electric refuse trucks just beginning trials in a Paris suburb. The 26-ton GVW truck is manufactured by French manufacturer PVI and features a 250 KWh / 620 volt system with a Dow Kokam liquid-cooled lithium-ion batter y pack with seven cells in series and five in parallel. A total of 11 trucks will be fielded this year for the trial.

6

With a fleet of 600 refuse trucks and a commitment to alternative fuel vehicles, Chicago would seem to be a perfect proving ground for a domestic electric refuse truck. The vehicles travel at slow speeds with a steady workload, planned schedules and one-shift operation suitable for off-hour recharging. Average diesel economy is currently just 1.8 miles per gallon, driven down by near constant idling since stops are often literally just a few feet apart. Analysis of the opportunity indicates a six-year payback, Stewart said, adding the city currently keeps refuse trucks for 13 or even 16 years. Chicago has a total fleet of some 12,000 vehicles, including more than 400 alt fuel vehicles. The city’s stated goal is increasing the al-

ternative fuel program by 10% per year. The city uses some 10 million gallons of fuel annually, creating substantial incentives to improve efficiency. The total fleet includes 319 hybrids, 82 CNG vehicles and eight all-electric vehicles.

Landi Renzo USA for Leggett & Platt Another option in natural gas vehicles has been unveiled by Leggett & Platt Commercial Vehicle Products: a Ford E-350 van with a dedicated compressed natural gas fuel system by Southern California’s Landi Renzo USA. A Landi Renzo-L&P CNG vehicle is in the rideand-drive this afternoon, and Ford is showing the upfitted truck at Booth 3431. Landi Renzo USA president Andrea Landi called L&P “an ideal partner.” “We’re expecting the CARB and EPA certs in mid-April,” says Landi VP sales John Sledge. California Air Resources Board and U.S. EPA certifications are necessary to begin placing the vehicles with operators. Leggett & Platt is confident of winning full QVM – Qualified Vehicle Modifier – status with Ford, Sledge adds, as Atlanta-based L&P’s facility in Elyria, Ohio will be a ship-though center for E-250 and E-350 cargo and passenger vans with the Landi CNG system, with three- and fourtank options. “Our customers have asked for alternative fuel options for their fleets and natural gas vehicles make economic sense,” said L&P new business and product development VP John Fischer. “We also strive to make the conversion process seam-

less,” Fischer said. “For Ford vans, simply check the option code [31V – effective April 1] on the vehicle order form to have it upfit with the CNG fuel system and delivered to a dealer anywhere in the country at no additional transportation cost. The conversion adds no significant time to the process.”

Landi Renzo USA, based in Torrance, Calif., is a new (incorporated in January 2010) division of Italy’s Landi Renzo, the world leader in gaseous fuel systems for light duty vehicles, reporting a 40% market share in CNG and propane. Landi Renzo was founded in 1954 by Renzo Landi, grandfather of Landi Renzo USA president Andrea Landi.

Propane-LPG Makes Strong Work Truck Showing Propane, known also as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) or, for vehicles, autogas, is often billed as the most used of the various alternative hydrocarbon fuels available today. Propane has done better than most others in terms of federal stim-

Fleets & Fuels ShowTimes: How prevalent are fleet vehicles fueled by propane autogas in the United States? What vehicle types does that entail? Brian Feehan: Propane autogas is the leading alternative fuel in the United States, as well as the nation’s third-most commonly used vehicle fuel after diesel and gasoline. Propane-LPG fuels more than 270,000 on-road vehicles today in the United States, according to the Energy Department, including light- and medium-duty pickup trucks, vans, shuttles, taxis, delivery vehicles, and school buses. In the past 20 months, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) and its manufacturing partners developed 10 new on-road vehicle platforms fueled by propane autogas. One of those platforms, from PERC partner Roush CleanTech, was unveiled here. It will be on display by Ford at Booth 3431 throughout the show. Fleet managers can put the handling and performance of two vehicle platforms fueled by propane autogas to test at the NTEA rideand-drive. The Ford E-350 van with a Roush CleanTech system and General Motors G-4500 series cutaway van with a CleanFuel USA system will both be in the ride-anddrive. In addition to currently available vehicles, eight new on-road platforms are in development by PERC and its partners. F&FST: How is propane autogas used outside of North America? BF: Known around the world as autogas, propane autogas fuels more than 15 million on-road vehicles worldwide. Just last month, PERC co-hosted delegates from around the globe for the World LP Gas 10

ulus funding for alt fuels, and an increasing number of firms are offering dedicated vehicular systems. General Motors said just last month that it would offer propane cutaway chassis through Knapheide Manufacturing (Booth 3741) in Mis-

Association (WLPGA) North American-European summit. Together they discussed how to foster greater global collaboration and innovation in developing advanced propane autogas technologies. As a result of discussion about the future of propane autogas in North America and Europe, the consensus was that the markets, while diverse, are more similar than they are different. The president and CEO of PERC, Roy Willis, commented that continued research for state-of-theart fuel systems, and expansion of refueling infrastructure are vital to sustaining propane autogas as the world’s, and America’s, leading alternative to gasoline and diesel. F&FST: Which U.S. manufacturers offer vehicles fueled by propane autogas? What growth do you see in the market? How is the industry supporting this market? BF: There are many manufacturers developing liquid propane autogas injection engines today including CleanFuel USA, and Roush Cleantech. Aftermarket systems are in development by companies such as Alliance AutoGas and Impco/BRC, among others. The North American market for vehicles fueled by propane autogas is gaining momentum as more fleet operators become aware of the environmental and economic advantages. PERC helps spur this growth through research, development and commercialization support. It also encourages the safe and efficient use of propane autogas through wideranging programs focused on safety and training. PERC’s collaboration with manufacturers, researchers, and government partners strengthens technical knowledge and maximizes investments in developing new propane autogas vehicles and products.

F&FST: What performance level are fleet managers experiencing with vehicles fueled by propane autogas? BF: Understanding the need and expectation for high-performance vehicles, PERC’s manufacturing partners have the ability to calibrate engines fueled by propane autogas for increased efficiency and higher combustion. The high performance of vehicles fueled by propane autogas is consistent across all PERC partner relationships. For example, the liquid propane autogas injection system developed by the propane industry in conjunction with its manufacturing partners, has proven to offer the same horsepower, torque, and towing capacity rating as gasoline-fueled equivalents, while still reducing emissions. F&FST: What refueling options are available for these vehicles? BF: Ease of refueling has accelerated the growing use of vehicles fueled by propane autogas. Many fleet managers are realizing the advantages of installing an on-site refueling infrastructure, such as portable propane autogas refueling platforms,

which allow for safe refueling without the permanence of stationary systems featuring underground propane tanks. In a portable platform, also known as a skid-mounted system, an above-ground propane tank, dispenser, pump, piping, and control panel are all mounted on a concrete or steel frame to create a portable unit that can be installed, removed, and relocated in a matter of days. Skid-mounted propane autogas refueling offers several benefits for fleet managers: • They can be installed, removed, and relocated quickly and easily, • They require no permanent changes to the installation site, • They ensure safe refueling of fleet vehicles fueled by propane autogas by trained operators, and • They provide an affordable way to test the need for refueling stations at various locations without investing in permanent structures. Underground storage tanks are also an option for longer-term use. Propane autogas providers can help fleet managers ascertain the best on-site refueling option.

FLEETS & FUELS

Wrightspeed High Power Drive California’s Wrightspeed is applying knowhow developed for a battery race car to medium duty trucks, where it sees an economic sweet spot for a highpower, series plug-in drivetrain using Wrightspeed’s X1 concept car top-shelf lithium ion batteries. “If you’re looking at vehicles that burn 3,000 or 4,000 gallons a year you’ve got some shot at paying for the batteries,” says founder and CEO Ian Wright. He claims payback of just three years with his DDS (Digital DriveSystem), with fuel at $3 per gallon. Wrightspeed is fitting an Isuzu NPR truck with DDS, using a C30 Capstone turbine, diesel-fueled, as a generator. “The motors and controllers are our design,” Wright says. “The motor, controller, and two-speed gearbox is packaged as one unit. Power-to-weight is improved over currently available units by more than a factor of two.” Each motor, up to four, “can deliver 250-horsepower peak,” the company says. The California Energy Commission has awarded nearly $1.2 million. “The Wrightspeed DDS uses electric-drive power for up to the first 40 miles per day,” states a CEC summary. “Wrightspeed expects this project to validate that the DDS results in a 100% increase in fuel economy under mixed driving conditions, when compared with the same truck with a diesel engine.” Fleets & Fuels, February 28 Work truck target

And It Sounded So Interesting The White House released word that enginemaker Cummins is working on hybrid drives with Zhengzhou Yutong Bus — among several dozen U.S.-China deals announced during January’s state visit. The two “have negotiated an agreement to jointly develop and commercialize hybrid power systems for the Chinese bus market,” the White House said. The Cummins-Yutong item then disappeared from the list. “Cummins and Yutong have not announced any agreements along these lines and neither company is ready to talk about any discussions that may be going on,” a Cummins spokesman told F&F. “Once the White House was made aware of the error, the reference was removed but not before it was reported by some media outlets.” A Yutong ZK6116D school bus is shown here. ALTe Claims a 3,000-Unit Purchase Order Electric Retrofits Include Engine Replacement

NRG founder and president Jim O’Brien.

NRG Dynamix Needs No Subsidies, Needs No Fuel Hikes Hydraulic Rig Fits Where Transmission Was “This technology with no subsidies at all will pay for itself in about two years,” says Jim O’Brien, president of Deerfield, Mich.-based NRG Dynamix, which is promoting hydraulic hybrid retrofits. In a two-shift New York City taxi, he says, the NRG system could pay for itself in just one year – and pay for the car as well. “Two guys who know what they’re doing was swap in this system in about four hours, just like changing a transmission,” O’Brien says. NRG has used modern engineering and materials to package the entire hydraulic hybrid drivetrain, replete with regenerative braking, in a new compact unit, even including the hydraulic accumulator vessels. “The entire design is ours,” O’Brien says. “It’s an entire hybrid system that fits in the same space that your transmission used to take.” His payback estimate doesn’t take into account the recent surge in fuel prices. “We haven’t recalculated for the current fuel levels,” O’Brien told F&FST. “At $2.83 [per gallon] our business model made sense.” “As the fuel prices go up, regrettably some of our competition starts to make sense.” NRG Dynamix was formerly known as LimoReid Technologies, after previously being named HybraDrive. In addition to pickup and other work trucks trucks, target markets range from off-road and military vehicles to school buses. Bill Carroll, ex-Dana, is CEO. Booth 639.

“In the next 30 to 60 days we’ll be signing longterm supply agreements with all of our major suppliers,” says Dennis Baranik of Mich.-based ALTe. The Auburn Hills company also expects to name a manufacturing partner with 100 installation centers nationwide. All will be needed as a shuttle bus body specialist – also to be named soon – has placed a purchase order for some 3,000 units per year, Baranik says. ALTe is in the “eleventh hour” of receiving a $65 million DoE loan to help make it all happen, he told F&FST. The firm has developed a retrofit for existing trucks that involves not only a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain installation but replacement of factory V-8s with much smaller engines – thereby transforming a 15 mpg truck into a 45 mpg truck, with 30 or even 40 miles of all-electric range. “It’s about a 14-hour retrofit process,” Baranik says. ALTe will use a 2-liter four-cylinder engine

from Fiat or Ford for trucks up to 14,000-lb GVW, and a 3.2- or 3.2-liter engine for larger vehicles, up to 24,000-lb GVW. ALTe has specified power-dense hairpin HVH motors from Remy International and has tested lithium ion batteries from suppliers including Dow Kokam (Booth 5350) and A123 Systems. “What we want to do is dual-source as many components as we can,” Baranik says. In addition to shuttle buses, ALTe’s market targets include delivery trucks and vans, and taxis and limousines. John Thomas is ALTe CEO.

Kenworths for Indy The Indiana Department of Transportation is taking delivery of 19 new Kenworth T440 tractors to be deployed in and around Indianapolis, where public compressed natural gas fueling is available. The dedicated CNG vehicles, bought from the local branch of multi-state Kenwor th dealer Palmer Trucks, have 8.9-liter, dedicated-natural gas ISL G engines from Cummins Westport (Booth 609). They each have four lightweight, all-composite, Type IV CNG fuel cylinders by Nebraska’s Lincoln Composites. The fuel vessels are in an assembly by Agility Fuel Systems affording 75 diesel gallon equivalents (DGE). Kenworth brought two T370 hybrid electric trucks here this week, one for Booth 3031 display and one for the afternoon ride-and-drive. Peterbilt (2125), like Kenwor th a Paccar company, has a medium duty Model 337 hybrid tractor The Kenworth T370s and the Peterbilt 337 have parallel hybrid electric drivetrains by Eaton.

HTUF Is Helping Build an Industry The Hybrid Truck Users Forum, the name for both an annual event and a whole series of initiatives, all coordinated by Pasadena, Calif.based Calstart (Booth 5367) has come a long way since it was drawn up on the back of a napkin more than ten years ago by Paul Skalny, director of the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center’s National Automotive Center, and Calstart VP Fred Silver. And so began TARDEC’s funding of HTUF and its partnership with Calstart, which continues today. But the forum has now broadened its initial military focus 14

to encompass an entire commercial industry and users as well. “The first HTUF – there might have been 100 people there – had the highest percentage we’ve ever had since of government officials,” Skalny told F&F ShowTimes. There were no other interested parties. Even then Skalny and Silver recognized that to achieve anything toward its vision of introducing hybrid technology to the Army, HTUF would need to embrace commercial users. But there weren’t any. HTUF has since formed working groups to bring together suppliers and users of hybrids, all in the commercial world, and included the

military so that it could gain confidence in hybrid drives from the experience and data being gathered in fleet use across America. Ten years ago there were no hybrid trucks on the road; today there are 2,500. Asked if this represents slow progress, Skalny said “No. Ten years might seem like a long time, but it’s a short span in terms of vehicle electrification, which has been going on for over a century.” Now there are a million and a half miles of data – and enough experience for the military to look seriously at hybrids. Calstart coordinated the Green

Like it or not, the bulk of the alternative fuel vehicle market in the United States is in California, where a combination of emissions controls and incentives has stoked demand for natural gas cars and trucks, and for fuel-saving hybrids. Showcasing Successes in Advanced Clean Vehicle Technologies and Alternative Fuels is the theme as Santa Monica-based Gladstein Neandross & Associates readies ACT Expo 2011 for May 4-7 at the Long Beach Convention Center. “We are undeniably at a pivotal point in the world’s use of energy in the transportation sector,” said GNA CEO Erik Neandross. “Original equipment manufacturers and energy suppliers are bringing more alternative fuel and advanced technology products to market over the next 12-24 months than ever before. “This fact, combined with steadily rising crude prices, has resulted in an ideally-timed conference,” Neandross said.
