Hino Brings a Hybrid to the U.S. Market Hino Trucks took bold strides into the U.S. market yesterday, announcing a new line of Class 4/5 cabovers, including two diesel-electric hybrid variants, a first in the U.S. Class 4 cab-over space. “We have a burning desire to make the world a better place,” proclaimed Hino Motors president Yoshiro Shirai, in making the announcement here Tuesday, citing a hybrid history dating to diesel/electric buses that entered service in 1991 – the first of some 10,000 hybrid deliveries to date. Hino (Booth 4131) said pricing for the 155 and 195 straight diesels will be competitive with the market, and the targeted payback for the 155H and 195H hybrids is five years at today’s fuel prices.

Hino will begin taking orders in May for delivery to dealers in August for the diesels, and September for delivery to dealers in December for the hybrids, which will initially be introduced in California, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The company refers to the trucks as sixth-generation hybrids. They feature nickel metal hydride battery packs made by Toyota’s Primearth EV Energy (formerly Panasonic EV) that is essentially the same as the battery pack in the Lexus GS Hybrid. The company is investing some $500 million per year in R&D. “We want to make hybrids the rule for urban areas – not the exception,” Shirai said.

The Green Truck Ride-and-Drive More than 21 clean and efficient trucks are in the National Truck Equipment Association’s Green Truck Ride-and-Drive, which continues this afternoon from noon to 4:30. B5 biodiesel fuel is being provided by Indiana’s Countrymark Co-op, which processes all of its petroleum products from Illinois Basin – All-America Crude. —more Green Truck Ride-and-Drive on pages 8-9
