Case studies The project started the project by searching for three case studies for learning environments to be a reference for the spatial experience. 1- School of Dancing Arches, India, 2019 Where corridors function as learning spaces not just for circulation. 2- Xiaoquan Elementary School, China, 2010 Where the spatial composition offer an expiatory experience for the users. 3- Daara Koranic School, 1981 Which blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. The spatial and formal language was designed by studying two mosques; Alghuri mosque, and sultan Alashraf mosque. since mosques also used to be schools and not only a worship place. By analyzing the floor plans and combining their distinct features, a conclusion of rules was established to be used for the formal construction.

The rules include a variety of levels and connecting them via bridges and staircases. Basic geometries such as triangle, circle, and rectangle form the floor plan. The connections between those geometries give more complexity to the plan. The same process was applied to design the floor plans, sections, and elevations.

EXPLODED CHUNKS inside/out

Interior Vs exterior

The project started with a focus on the representation of interior vertical and horizontal circulation networks reconfigured from a 3-dimensional scan of Higgins Hall. Then remodel and compose the different chunks of the building to create a hybrid model that combines all of the chunks. Step two was to modify this hybrid model and try to define certain characteristics that will be farther developed using parametric tools.

SOFT VS TOUGH After the main rules are shaped, the model stated to get more detailed and complex using texture mapping and materials to give it farther depth. Lastly, most importantly, is to examine the interiority of the whole building through exploded chunks and a series of interior shots (gifs) that show the relation between interior and exterior. The main idea behind the use of these different materials is to create a sort of gradient roughness that starts from the building mass itself. Then it gets more rough through the different materials such as marble stone, animal skin, etc.

EXTRUSIONS // PLANES

MATERIAL STUDY // AGGREGATION SYSTEM

SITE // ENCLOSURE

The studio emphasizes spatial organization through computational and algorithmic studies that converged with material studies to produce computational strategies and physical experimentations. It also tries to organize logics of enclosure, structure and interior Vs. Exterior relationships..

PLANES VS MASSES THE FINAL PHASE IN PROJECT WAS TO CREATE ENCLOSURES USING SERIES OF EXTRUSIONS THAT HAVE BEEN MODIFIED AND EDITED TO GENERATE VOLUMES AND occupiable Spaces. THE goal for me WAS TO USE PLANES RATHER THAN MASSES TO CREATE VOLUMES AND ENCLOSURES. THUS, THE BUILDING USES THE PLANES FOR CIRCULATION AND bridging BETWEEN LEVELS. They ALSO ACT AS SHADING Devises THAT CAST shadows in DIFFERENT PATTERNS. In order to CREATE MORE ENCLOSURE IN SOME PRIVATE AREAS IN THE BUILDING, PLANES WERE WRAPPED TO CREATE MASSES THAT LOOK LIKE BLOBS. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE SITE AND THE BUILDING IS VERY HARMONIZED. IT AIMED TO GIVE A CAMOUFLAGE EFFECT, WHERE IT BECOMES HARD TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE SITE DUE TO The MASSIVE PROJECTIONS OF PATTERNS. BOTH ON THE BUILDING AND THE GROUND.

Depth analysis

The aim of this project is to explore the documentation, cataloging and representation of architectural features on buildings at Governors Island. Starting with a documentation analysis on elevational depth, exploring transitions of depth, flatness and texture. Through this drawing analysis and coloration agenda, an “Elevational Relief was produced. the Relief speculates on both the figure and depth of its architectural features in both psychical model and line drawings.
