The Adventures of Poppy The Penguin
Hi I’m Poppy!
I did not know what it was like to live in different parts of the world until my recent adventure. This is my story about one little penguin who travelled the Earth! Along the way I created a little fact file to help me write the story and to help me remember interesting facts. It would be fantastic for you to create your own fact file based on my journey.
Enjoy!

Sitting on the edge of a vast, sheer white cliff, was a small, thin, black and white with a yellow glow around its neck emperor penguin. She was as still as a statue. From beneath her wing rested an old, wooden fishing rod, which was cast out into the icy Southern Ocean below. The emperor penguin was smiling with her eyes closed because the cold, crisp Antarctic breeze made her feel happy, at home.
Poppy was an ordinary penguin, living an ordinary life. She wonderingly looked out into the distance to see nothing but grey, harsh waves crashing toward her. “I wonder what is past the horizon?” she asked herself. “Could there be more ice, cold weather and snow, or could it be different?”
Suddenly there was a vibration from the water that past through the fishing rod and into the wing of Poppy! “Finally, food!” she thought. Unfortunately Poppy’s dinner was fighting against her, while she pulled up, the fish swam down until there was a crack, crack, whoosh! The piece of land Poppy had been sitting on broke away, creating her own iceberg. Swiftly, the grey, ferocious Southern Ocean swept the iceberg away from the cold Antarctic. Where would Poppy end up?
A kind stork landed on the shrinking iceberg. It was the first animal Poppy has seen since the Antarctic. Interestingly, Poppy found out she was in the Indian Ocean, heading towards to Red Sea. The stork informed Poppy that she was close to the continent Africa and that there was a desert inland, which was a stark contrast to the frozen Antarctic desert Poppy called home. So Poppy decided to dive into the water where her iceberg had haltered and swam to Africa. To her surprise the water was drastically warmer than the water in the Southern Ocean.

When Poppy reached land she travelled until she reached the Sahara desert. Poppy was amazed! The sun beamed down on her black feathers making her very hot and uncomfortable. In front of her she could see a sea of golden sand, which appeared to fry her webbed feet as she walked on it. There was a strong, powerful wind that blew the grains of sand into her eyes but unlike the wind back home this was warm.
As the sun went down, the temperature plummeted which reminded Poppy of the cold air in the Antarctic. Poppy stayed in the desert over night but in the morning when she woke the temperature rose and she wanted to leave. Just then a little scorpion scuttled toward her and said, “The stork told me that your iceberg has drifted to the west coast of Africa, follow me and I will take you there. Poppy was very grateful; the hot, dry climate was not to her liking!
They crossed the Atlantic Ocean until they reached the continent South America. A bright, colourful toucan landed on Poppy’s shrinking iceberg. Poppy was startled as she had never seen something that was beautiful coloured like a rainbow. “I have flown direct to direct you to where I live, in the Amazon Rainforest. Please look above and follow

Eventually Poppy reached the edge of the rainforest and followed the toucan into the vast, dense, tall trees. Everywhere she looked there were different species of animals. They were all of a variety of splendid colours. Above, Poppy could see the sky peeping between the canopy. A drop of sweat dripped down her beak, it was incredibly hot and humid!
All of a sudden, it began to rain, drops were travelling as fast as formula one cars racing each other to the ground. The rainforest floor started to flood until the rain stopped and the sun beamed through the trees above once more. Reappearing from the trees above was the toucan. He perched himself onto of Poppy’s head and offered to guide her back to the east coast of South America.
Poppy’s iceberg was drifting back across the Atlantic Ocean but toward the continent Europe. Suddenly, Robbie the Robin landed beside her. Poppy explained to Robbie the different parts of the world she had visited so Robbie decided to direct her to Hartlepool in England.

They had reached the east coast of England so Poppy swam to shore. As she swam she noticed that the north sea was cooler than the Atlantic Ocean she has just travelled through. Poppy reached Seaton beach and felt a cool breeze. The sea looked a similar colour to the water back at home. Robbie directed Poppy to Ward Jackson Park. The sun had now broken out, the wind had dropped and the temperature rose slightly. Poppy saw a red squirrel run across her path and up into the tree. It was getting warmer still so Poppy wanted to go home.
Although Poppy enjoyed visiting the Sahara desert, the Amazon Rainforest and England but nothing was better than her home. Happily, Poppy travelled on her iceberg all the way back to the Antarctic where she jumped into the cool icy, water just in time for her tea.
