INTRODUCTION According to the UN Habitat figures, population in urban areas in less developed countries will grow from 1.9 billion in 2000 to 3.9 billion in 2030. This surge in the numbers of dwellers will put a strain on the existing infrastructures, worsen living conditions, create unsanitary environments and carve out slums and disaster prone sites. The threat from unplanned, unbridled and uncoordinated urban development results is real and looms over many cities. Hence it becomes urgent for policy makers to manage urbanisation as it occurs by implementing effective land-use management, providing reliable and affordable access to basic services, education, housing, transport and health. We need a collective effort in ensuring a viable future. Activistar Advocacy believes that we can start shaping the sustainable development thinkers; motivating the innovators and inspiring the practitioners of the future through education for sustainability. This city planning competition will facilitate participants to understand what are the current and future challenges that the developing countries are experiencing under the pressure of rapid urbanisation with the number of city dwellers and migrants swelling. They will appreciate the work of relevant authorities and leaders in managing the many interconnected tenets of urban development and planning.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION
With much coveted support and partnerships, Activistar Advocacy will be organizing the 4th Planning a Clean and Green Township Competition for youth leaders between 14 - 26 years old. Teams from Southeast Asia, especially the case-study country are invited to participate. This is in line with our vision to reach out to as many youths as possible because the sustainability message is universal and is beyond borders. Also we want to encourage cross border exchanges among youths to increase knowledge and cultural exchange. Besides coaching in urban planning domains, we have added field trips to enhance the appreciation for Manila and to invite all our participating countries to visit Singapore to see some of the urban solutions that Singapore has already embraced as an urban laboratory.

PLANNING A CLEAN AND GREEN TOWNSHIP -CIT Y BEAUTIFUL MANILA-
PROBLEMS
-Mass transit stations were built close to exclusive gated communities and huge military camps, The residents of which don’t even take public transport. -Roads and parking spaces unable to keep up with the ever-increasing number of vehicles. -Infrastructure incapable of handling—let alone mitigating the effects—natural calamities; (typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) -An army of low-income residents pushed into the corners of the metropolis, toiling and forever priced out of the housing market.
The plan is organized into five components: at-grade urban roads; main roads/expressways network; urban and suburban rail network; road-based public transport; and traffic management strengthening. Being in line with Manila’s 2030 vision. Having us to analize the whole of Manila and provide a solution on an urban scale.

ZONINGS CURRENT MANILLA From the mapping of Manila City, it can be seen that generally the city planning emphasizing lots of land uses for golfing purposes. There is also plenty of residences that are of ground level houses with a few informal settlements in between it including some that are camping near the rivers and ports. The green areas like the parks are sparse and little still function as intended, as the space is mostly occupied by informal settlement. Water catchment are a rare sight in the city as the river is considered as the natural form of catchment for water usage.
INTEGRATED NETWORKS A Proposed network across Manila City which is inclusive of water, greens, bicycle networks and many more which integrated among one another around the city forming a seamless connection throughout. A seamless journey between the integrations that could even be experience through cycling around the city with the implementation of the bicycle networks working alongside bio swales and the greeneries. 37

INTRODUCTION The project site is based in Sentosa Cove, a residential enclave located in the eastern part of Sentosa Island, Singapore. Previously, the boardwalk together with its the surrounding area, was a private space only accessible to residents. It is now open to the public. Unfortunately, not many are aware of this. Given this information, we were tasked to design an installation that drives locals and tourists to Sentosa Cove repeatedly.
THE INSTALLATIONS
• In harmony with its environment – the Marina • Serve a function, • Be of a reasonable/ low cost to create and maintain (yet not look cheap), • Have a high possibility of proliferation over social media to create talking points.

SITE LOCATION

OPPORTUNITIES
The existing site has a lack of shelter, seats, communal areas for interaction, and nearby attractions. It is also not barrier-free. There is, however, a scenic view that is serene, with an environment that is peaceful and breezy. These existing features create opportunities to explore with shelters, and play and dining areas that relate with the existing functions and project brief requirements.

LIVING LAYERS VISION
Our vision for the Sentosa Cove Boardwalk area is to create buzz through a design strategy that will take into consideration, a holistic, symbolic, iconic brand identity to the entire proximity. Living Layers takes inspiration from the movement of ocean waves as the site is near the water. To reflect the marine environment in Sentosa Cove, the design is organic and continuous. The organic and exaggerated forms greatly contrasts the current site which is rigid and monotonous. The main strategy of Living Layers is to envisage and determine human ethnographical behaviors at different segments of the Cove boardwalk area and relate these to relevant activities, environments, equipment, landscape and visual identity. It segments and validates activities that are happening at ground level (lower part of the wave curve) to mid-level activities (middle of wave) to the apex level activities (the peak of the wave). Lower level activities could include seats, picnics etc. whilst mid-level could include slides and play equipment and high level exertions that could include wind chimes, music and related wind manifestations. Given the organic shape, profile and roll of the wave structure, a double helix symbol was chosen as a reflection of this particular design direction. The double helix wave form is also immediately recognised as a brand image and can be easily translated into a visual form and logo for the Cove area. The fluid and organic rolls of ocean waves are captured and flows through the entire site to encapsulate and integrate the various zones of activities (Play, Dine, Rest) into a complete whole. In the evenings at night, this entire wave concept and profile is lit and seen from a distance to be recognized as an iconic destination for people in the mainland to want to go to. As Singapore is heading into sustainability and green technology, Living Layers will similarly be sustainable as it will use recycled wood from the old boardwalk. The wood will not be used raw as it is, but will be treated using vacuum impregnation with high resistance varnish. Additionally, this upcycling makes the design relevant and unique to Sentosa Cove itself. This proposal aims to transform the character of Sentosa Cove into a more lively and diverse urban environment. Where current users and visitors to the site are mostly foreigners, Living Layers aims to diversify the site to bring people of different social classes to one place—and to increase utility of the Cove. With the existing yoga and pilates classes, these installations would encourage more of such activities as it will provide shelter. Different people can bring their own meals from home and share it, or have their own gatherings at this space; it is non-exclusive. Ultimately the Cove is to be a communal space, where people can meet and have opportunities to interact.
45
• Close proximity to the entrance for public • Able to experiment with heights due to the location • Long stretch allows to include more elements in this area
• Nearby the F&B outlets • For people to enjoy the picturesque view in close proximity while dining • Communal space for people to interact with one another
• This area cannot obstruct the view which calls for low elements • Breezy area makes it suitable for relaxing • Rest area at the end of the long boardwalk 46
WOOD REUSE
The design will be sustainable as recycled Chengah wood will be used from the old boardwalk. By manipulating the wood, seats, tables, ramps and shelters can be created. The wood will be treated with vacuum impregnation with high resistance varnish for a nicer and much longer-lasting finish.
What is Vacuum Impregnation? Impregnation is the process of applying a coating or layers of chemically stable liquids (such as resin) to porous surfaces to prevent accumulation of undesired elements like dust, dirt, chemicals or water. This process also prevents the advent of external moisture that may be accumulated in the wood.

Furnitures
We propose 2 additional furnitures, namely the Pop-up table and the organic bench. The table is designed such that it does not block the scenic view. The organic bench will also transition into a table, allowing for a pop-up bench that follows the same principles as the table.

When table are not use it relates to low and gentle waves which roll off the shores.
When users pull up the table, it relates to huge ocean waves made by strong winds.

As a kid, the pen and pencil has always been a familiar language for me to express myself through drawings. Throughout my growing years, this has become a practice for me as I grew up. Drawing has become my second nature, a best friend that’s always there with me. Drawing has taught me to be observant with the little details around me. It has also become a tool that aids me through the different processes of planning such as note taking, sketching, rendering and towards the final artwork.
DRAWINGS
My constant drawing and sketching has become a habit and I have strived to improve on my technical skills throughout my growing years through the different stages of my life. It started from Secondary schools when I took Art as an elective for O levels, Tertiary education where I gained a diploma in Education in Environmental Design, an architecture and landscape design course where I learned to draw buildings and incorporate nature into my designs. My skills in drawing have also been an important part of my career when I worked as an interior designer at Chapter 3 Interior Design company for 2 years. I had to use my drawing skills and different shading techniques to bring my client’s ideas for their future house to life.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Apart from designing buildings and urban planning, Photography plays a part in my journey capturing every moments viewed and explored by this pair of eyes. Being behind the lense brings me joy, capturing the golden moment and freezing time behind every shots. Knowing that time is just like the candle’s flame and what burns are the minutes we live. Time waits for no one.
