ith traditions rooted in maritime activities, the UAE has always been in close contact with water bodies. It is no wonder that the country continues to maintain its foothold. The UAE is strategically located at the crossroad of trade and business, and this has initiated a number of developments exclusively dedicated to the mode. In order to regulate the flow of industry, a specialised non-profit trade and industry council, the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries, is created to promote the interests of the industry in Dubai and the UAE. It aims to maintain a safe and booming maritime environment that eventually contributes to enhancing Dubai’s position as one of the leading maritime points. Recently, members of the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI) held a meeting to lay down guidelines on the broad framework for future operations. Besides that, issues of concern surrounding the industry as well as the need to for-
tify foundations for better networking opportunities between industry partners were among the topics of discussion. “We have achieved a major milestone in initiating the Council’s operations. All members have tremendous expertise and experience in their respective fields and we aim to obtain a knowledgeable collective and cohesive take on imminent issues and present a strong industry voice at relevant platforms,” said Khamis Juma Buamim, Chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World. Drydocks World and Maritime World spearheaded the formation of DCMMI for the industry. He further added: “The Council will address pertinent issues related to the expansion of the network in terms of widening the membership. It will strive to support government initiatives for the industry and local and international laws and regulations related to the marine industry. It is also committed to working with an environment conscience and in promoting green industries that will direct the future of shipping.” Over 55 organisations comprising international and local companies specialising in the maritime sector have set up base in Dubai
Maritime City (DMC), a cluster dedicated to boost maritime-related activities in the Middle East. The venue houses industrial, commercial and trading companies, and offers options ranging from small and large workshops and warehouses to ship repair plots and shops. Speaking about the establishment, Khamis Juma Buamim,
Chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World said: “We have changed the concept of business and development plans for the city to re-engineer a model of an active futuristic city. There has been large- scale interest in the Dubai Maritime City, because of its proximity to the trading and commercial hub within the emirate of Dubai. The city is ideally located at an exceedingly busy trading route and provides innumerable opportunities for business and trade. The region has survived the economic shocks that are rattling countries elsewhere and is widely known for its resilience and ability to overcome adversities due to strong business and economic fundamentals. This is the primary reason that there has been an ever-
growing list of local and international companies lining up to set up base at the city. We have had a growing number of ship owners who are faithfully utilising the state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities that are on offer.” Similarly, one of the biggest industrial zones in the country, the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) by the Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC), features a master plan that keeps in line with Abu Dhabi’s vision 2030 to promote industrial diversification. The location strives to become an important hub for various sectors with focus on manufacturing, logistics and trade.
