he UAE Shipping Association (UAESA), established to promote the interests of the shipping community in the UAE, serves as a focal point for exchange of ideas between the industry and the authorities. It has become a platform through which members can convey and discuss views, opinions and significant shipping related issues. Dr Ali Obaid Al-Yabhouni, Chairman, UAESA and Chief Executive Officer, Abu Dhabi National Tanker Company (ADNATCO), says, “UAESA has accomplished some major achievements since it was first established. Initially, it made an important contribution to the review and subsequent amendment of the ship registration procedure in the UAE. This improved the administration protocol in vessel registry and helped maintain the highest possible standards. Overall, UAESA has played an important role in bridging the gap between the shipping community and the UAE’s maritime authorities.” The association was established in 2007 under the initial title of UAE Ship Owners Association. It opened its membership not only to ship owners, but to other shipping companies as well. Soon it was renamed UAE Shipping Association. It holds various seminars, talks and workshops, as a tool to advance the growth of marine knowledge and keeps the shipping community updated on the latest developments in shipping regulations and emerging technologies. “Through organised seminars and presentations, members are

given the opportunity to network with their colleagues, exchange views and opinions and listen to issues of contemporary importance, which affect the maritime community at large. These events also enable members to meet representatives from government and statutory boards, as well as build business contacts and friendships with people from various sectors of the maritime industry,” Al-Yabhouni notes. UAESA is expected to continue its position as the hub for meaningful events and initiatives that promote interest, as well as highlight the value of being a member. The association’s adherence to its

objective of facilitating useful and informative activities on shipping matters, is beneficial not only to the members, but to the entire UAE shipping industry. “At the end of the next five years, we would like UAESA to be viewed as a pioneering shipping industry body, geared to assist the development of the shipping industry in the UAE. With shipping being a major industry in the region, the existence of UAESA is extremely important because it unites the major players in the maritime community, in addition to promoting the growth of the UAE shipping sector as a whole,” Al-Yabhouni adds.
