UK boarding education is increasingly popular with local and expat families living in the Middle East; it provides stability of education, a stepping stone to university and educational support in a safe secure environment. One of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is an education, the opportunity to be the best they can be, to unlock their potential and give them support and encouragement. You may have a number of different options when choosing your child’s educational pathway and it is well worth looking at them all, with an open mind before making a decision. So, what is boarding school life really like? Structured, busy, opportunities to try new activities, being with friends 24/7; the school days are longer and include time for homework (called ‘prep’), the weeks may be longer too with Saturday morning school and sports matches on a Saturday afternoon. The facilities for sport and the arts are excellent and would fulfil the dream of any budding actor, golfer, singer, foot-

After living in Dubai for most of my life, yet being a British national, it was weird to finally be experiencing life in my home country. My expectations of my sixth-form life were worrying. However, since being a boarder for almost a year and a half now, those worries were fruitless. As a boarder, you experience a comradery you can’t experience in a day school with the number of activities and moments you share together e.g. house events and socials, allowing you to form friendships for life. From my experience, I have developed an improvement in my confidence as well as an increase in my maturity and responsibility. Ben, former boarder at Dean Close School

t St Joseph’s College, our responsive, individual care, dynamic curriculum, broad green acres and inspiring teachers are rewarded by our smiling and highly motivated students. We are happy when our students are happy, because we believe their happiness is the result of fulfilment. Happiness and space characterise our school with 580 students aged two to 18 years on the safe 60-acre campus there’s room to grow and thrive. Central to our educational philosophy is the belief that diversity of opportunity is vital in creating balance in learning. We offer an extraordinary range of options beyond the timetable — clubs and societies, leadership roles, academic extension, adventure training, sports, the arts, travel and charity work — to broaden our students’ experience and build confidence. The value added to each student in terms of examination results is outstanding, but life at St Joseph’s College is about so much more than just the excellent examination results we achieve with students of all abilities. Supported by our warm ethos, students develop into respectful, caring, independent thinkers, well prepared for further education and the wider world. And that’s enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Look at our website to see how we achieve what we do, browse our prospectus and tour the campus virtually. But to feel the happiness and appreciate the space fully, come and visit us. We are holding an Open Day on March 19, 2022. Your family would be most welcome to join us then or by arrangement at a time to suit you.
Victorian social reformers than the dynamic requirements of twenty-first century work. School all too often has a very narrow (and highly literacy-focused) definition of intelligence. For the child not wired for traditional schooling, vocational education can be transformational, removing barriers and building confidence. Being able to dive deeply into a highly motivating subject area — from Land Based Studies, to Fashion Design, to Games Production, to Enterprise — transforms some school-allergic children into experts in their fields. Working on real projects, for real clients, presents stimulating levels of challenge but with moderate pressure, at a pace that promotes wellbeing. Don’t let your child be the next twenty-something to sit at interview with buckets of qualifications but not an ounce of experience, originality, initiative or common sense. If you have never considered vocational education for your child, it’s time to take a look at the rich and relevant options available. I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised. We attended the Anderson Education UK Boarding School Exhibition in 2019 and were impressed with the professionalism and experience of the consultants. They listened to our concerns and priorities with empathy and carefully matched our son with a selection of schools. The experience has been incredibly simple with impartial advice and reassurance throughout the process. Our son has flourished since his first introduction to a UK boarding education. His interest in his own future has expanded into a plethora of extra-curricular activities including the United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, additional language study, STEP Mathematics team leader; all of which demonstrate his growing aspiration to achieve his chosen university and career.
