SARAH DAYE The grind- the meticulous hard work and energy one continuously puts forth into their artistry, craft or aspirations- and even daily tasks. The grind for many of us is tiring but absolutely necessary in order for us to get where we want to be. Something that Ms. Daye knows all too much about. Raised in Rexdale, Sarah Jane Daye, singer songwriter, dancer and producer is a Jill of all trades. “If I couldn’t get an audition

to be hired for a performance for someone else production I just said well, I’ll make my own production”. I’ve just gone out and got my own gigs, presented myself professionally, basically took it upon myself to train myself in all aspects to be well rounded. A work ethic that has certainly brought Ms. Daye to where she is now in her blooming career. After

SARAH DAYE to showcase me again because they really loved my performance. “I’m looking forward to that” Sarah exclaimed. As a frequent feature on R&B Live; an intimate musical event that showcases impressive talents from around the world, Sarah can also be seen at many of LA’s hottest venues (check out her FB page for

events!). With the passion to share her voice and soul through music Sarah has tenaciously approached her dreams at full throttle. “I’m a workaholic and I like to be involved. I’m very artistic in many different ways, so I like to share all parts of my work. A part of my art is

actually designing flyers, designing my website. Even communicating with my fans, I’m the one who does all my social media pages. In today’s music scene fans and listeners want the artist to be accessible, to get to know them on a personal level. This attractive quality in Ms. Daye is sure to have all fans and followers sticking

touring Asia for 7 years the singer songwriter has landed on American soil. Now living in the City of Angels where the opportunity for creative work is abundant. “I just did the Jaime Foxx show and I got to feature two songs. I performed my new single, that was at the Congo Room in downtown LA, for LA live. They offered

around for the long haul. My goal is always to make sure that I’m giving the best experience to people who are taking time to come and see me. Whether it is listening to my music or going to my fan page, or my FB, twitter or whatever. I try and offer the best of me in all that I can provide in terms of entertainment. As change approaches in Sarah’s career she draws support from inspiration and mentor Salome Bey. As a young artist going to theatre school Sarah was touched by the Jazz and Blues sensation. “One of my biggest inspirations, Salome Bey. She has won many awards but for me more importantly, she was the first one to really believe in me. I auditioned for her for a musical theater production

called Rainbow World when I was 18. She really took us in as if we were her own. She taught us how to take care of our voices, and she taught

us to have confidence in our performance, and that there are so many meanings behind life in general. She inspires me and I thank her everyday for kind of lighting my torch”. Excited for her up coming album Sarah looks forward to some industry support but is most definitely enthusiastic to collaborate with fellow artists. As a major Aretha Franklin fan, Ms. Daye aspires to befriend the ultimate soul songstress, “I’m a huge Aretha Franklin fan. For me she is the godmother of soul. I really respect her. She again has this soul, a motherly kind of thing about her. Singing from the gut, she just has the power, the soul, the feel and wisdom behind her as well. I would love to just be in her presence and speak with her. To learn something from her expertise

would be fantastic.” About to sign a contract with a major New York label Sarah’s work is paying off. Her new single “For Love” offers listeners sweet sultry notes with a powerful deliverance. Check out Ms. Dayes new single and media links at sarahdaye.com. Sarah is sure to break out on the scene in the months to come, so look out and stay tuned for her much-anticipated album. Daye states “I do what I do because one I feel like it’s my calling, I feel like it’s a gift from God, I totally believe that I am meant to do. Not only for me to do but to share, and if I can, make a difference in peoples lives, or make people happy. I live through music so for me I hope that I can touch people that way and share”.

RICH KIDD

None of what you hear, half of what you see, all of what Rich Kidd says. Original Rich Kidd: MC, producer and director from Toronto. With a lot of hard work and an open mind, this young, rising star has quickly gained popularity in the hip-

hop world. Along with his music career, he manages to find time to give back to his community, inspiring the future generation of hip hop artists through youth and

child work at places like The L.O.F.T. [Life, Opportunity, Food & Technology; A branch of the Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre] because he himself

benefited from similar programs growing up. Localiez got to hang out and chat with Rich while he was working his producer magic in a cozy little turquoise

The L.OF.T, Rich believes, “has changed a lot of people’s lives in terms of how they want to approach the industry and how they want to approach music in general”. They are attempting to teach these kids a more broad way of looking at the world, “We are trying to open the minds and eyes of the youth these days to a whole broad spectrum of ideas and to think for themselves – this is what they

He was only 16 and produced a beat that was turned into a track called the Get Right song that made it to radio. Rich quickly realized that if he was going to have a career in this industry, “I didn’t want to rhyme on industry beats, or keep rapping on other people’s beats. I wanted to kinda like, you know, craft my own kinda sound.” And so the influential style of Rich Kidd was born. He has continued going hard in the industry ever since, producing for the likes of artists like Busta Rhymes, K-OS ft. Nelly Furtado, and Drake. “I never keep myself in a box and say I can’t write this beat or that beat, I know that I have to make beats that I have to tailor to everybody but still feel I’m not losing

Shane Nicley The little red light flashes at me, blink blink blink- oh what could it be? A text, a tweet, or a message filled with glee [and no not the hit cast!] do these cellular addictions afflict anyone but me? With 5 billion cell phone users worldwide the answer to that question is most certainly yes. With any one of today’s hottest pieces of technology you can stay connected with family, friends, and colleagues alike at the press of a button. In this high-tech era the ways in which we communicate have forever changed, changes that also apply to how we communicate in our romantic relationships. Now a day a relationship can be sustained without the lovebirds even being in the same country, thanks to some wonderful technology. Use any smartphone to stay connected informed and now, manage relationships. A concept recently explored by writer Liam Card of new film “Textuality”. As growing technological phenomenon slowly pushes our old ways of socializing and relating

out the window Localiez couldn’t help but scope out some local talent to give us some perspective on the matter.

Actor/Athlete Shane Nicely takes his on screen debut in Textuality. A story that looks at two peoples journey as they attempt to start a relationship, but before they can, they must end their current engagements they have been managing through their Blackberries - a scenario not far fetched from some of our very own realities. As Shane enters the limelight, we caught up with him to talk about his emerging acting career, technology and the digital lifestyles some of us lead. IEZ: You have shared with us that venturing into the film industry has been a long standing goal for you. At which point did you realize it was the path you would take? SN: “ I’ve always had an interest in acting even through basketball. I have always thought that I would get a chance to do something through acting. When my

athletic career dissipated, I had a chance to fall back on my acting interest. Being blessed, I had opportunities to do a lot of things in acting and meet the right people. I had a lot of people believe in me and tell me that I have something special and that I really could do something through acting. From day one the term I use is such a blessing. I just hope it continues.”

for me. My basketball career ended on an injury for me, and I was very close to making it to the prosAnything that could happen to an athlete

IEZ: You are an amazing athlete; your

athletic talents have been showcased around the world, from Belgium to the Carolina’s. What was it like transitioning from the basketball court and athletic scenery into the entertainment industry? SN: “Thank you! The transition was very difficult

happened to me. I got a chance to really travel the world with the game that I love. Again it ended on a kind of bad note, but the positive side was getting to focus on other things. My focus was always to help

IEZ: It must be extremely exciting to begin focusing on one of your true passions! How does it feel to finally break into the acting scene?

16

SN: “ It’s a blessing. I have been so blessed to be able to do the things I truly love in life, first to be an athlete. That is where my heart is. I would give up acting and everything to play a day or a season in the NBA because I am a competitor. I’ve been born and breed into competition. I come from a very athletic background,

sports were my life but again you got to move forward, keep it moving.” IEZ: The main theme in Textuality explores the digital era we’re in. Now you don’t even have to be in the same country to communicate with someone. What is your stance in this digital age? Are you accepting of the new ways we communicate? What will come of this trend we are in- is it here to stay or will it soon lose it’s signal? SN: “ Sadly- depending on the situation you are in. Business wise it’s an awesome venue to be able to contact people instantaneously but I think we as people we loose that community, the social aspect of being one on one. The days of going out and writing your number on a napkin to give to someone is over. In the past that’s how you knew someone was interested in you, thanks to the personal connection and interaction, but you loose that emotion “Never give up on your through dreams, even if you fail, technology never give up. When you today.”

fail, you move forward.” IEZ: Working with heavy duties; Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) and Jason Lewis (Sex in the City) must have been a great experience! How was working on the set with these acting moguls? One of which is a homegrown Torontonian!

IEZ: Do you have a twitter page? SN: “I don’t and I get in trouble a lot for not having

SN: “YES! I like Tom Welling- I really like his character, he fits Superman’s character to a tee. Seems like such a humble country fun, good guy. I think his character performs well. It’s a great series and it sucks that is it ending this season because I always wanted to audition for a part to appear on the show!”

| localiez |

IEZ: Couldn’t happen to notice on your FB page that you share the love of Smallville! Who is your favorite character and why?

2011

SN: “You learn to be a better actor almost instantly. They have been in the business for a long time and they have had opportunities to work with fantastic people themselves and its starts a chain reaction. Now I’m coming up and I get to see what it takes to be a top actor. The whole experience was very educational and they were very helpful in my progression as an actor.”

17

one. I just want to keep it simple. As much as it gets your name out there and people become aware of what you’re doing and what you’re about I’d rather do it the old fashion way; if you want to get to know me just take 2 minutes to punch me up, and find out that way. I really can’t believe how people take an interest in me saying ‘Hey, I just got out of the shower,’ or ‘ Going to Macs to buy a lottery ticket” IEZ: What are you most important priorities today? SN: Right now I have an opportunity to help athletes further their career. I’m working on a little project out in BC. That is absolutely my focus right now. Obviously I want to ride this acting wave; I’m hoping that more scripts and auditions come my way. I want those roles that are very deep in character and you have to really push yourself. I think every actor want those roles. It’s never been about the money, even with basketball, I just want to be challenged.

| localiez |

www.localiez.com

|

2011

IEZ: What are some words of wisdom you can pass onto readers who are interested in pursing a career in acting?

18

SN: I don’t think this is only secluded to actors, more for everyone. You just have one life to live. Everybody has a dream and you cheat yourself if you don’t at least attempt to accomplish those dreams. That’s for everyone who breathes and walks the earth. You got to. Some are less fortunate and they have to work harder but that’s what makes that journey so much better when you get there. Just follow, and work hard. If it doesn’t happen, you’re not a failure, its just showing you that you need to move forward and do something else. With everyone’s lives becoming busier by the second, saving effort for the important things in life is becoming a bit more attractive, however the value in personal interaction is still very high. That is something technology won’t ever be able to trade with us humanoid types. Whether it starts online, on a Blackberry or in person our relationships crave the warmth of a touch to truly be enjoyed. A point Shane, nicely lays out for Localiez readers.

AUGUST

“If your not willing to die for it, then don’t do it. You got to put in your 10,000 hours, and not 10,000 hours of diddling around, 10,000 hours of efficient, effective work”, some wise words of warning

With Augusts excellent track record in producing sizzling hot tracks you can bet your bottom dollar that his up coming album will supply the hooks and lines listeners have

been waiting for. An album with a prospective sound that the artist describes as a fusion of his most liked artists; John Mayer, Boys to Men, MJ, Blackstreet, Jodeci. “It’s a pop album in terms of I want it to infiltrate the pop realm, a pop album with heavy urban overtones. I think I’m just a musical mutt. The album is really me. You buy this album and you hear it, you are going to know me. You are going to know what I’ve gone through or what I’m going through at the moment. You’re going to know that I’m having fun, that I like girls. You’re going to know that I have a girlfriend and your going to know that I miss home all the time. You’re going to know all that about me. It’s a very personal album. But I wanted the audience and the listener to buy into me not to just buy into

|

In today’s day and age where technology is readily available, anyone with basic gear can create music. Since accessibility is not an issue, and anyone and everyone can create a name for themselves, standing out amongst the thousands of artists can pose very tricky. With his unique sound August resembles the falsetto voice of pop icon Justin Timberlake, a voice that should have no problem standing alone among the rest. With his up in coming album making head way to our ears we can only expect the best from the writer/ producer turned artist. “My immediate goal is to put out this single. I’ve had opportunities to write for some great artists and still I have a couple big things coming up that I’m working with. But

I always started writing and producing so I could start singing and be the artist.” After meeting with many industry players in Canada with little to no support, the time came to seek out the heavy hitters across borders. With that August welcomed a partnership with Island/ Def Jam, and it’s here that the show begins. “I got this house in Jersey with my manager. It houses all the writers, and producers we’ve signed and artists. I wake up in the morning and have a coffee. Go straight to the keyboard, or computer rather, figure out what I did the night before, make sure it’s hot. I write a song everyday.”

shares super star songwriter August Dan Rigo, the creative mastermind behind many of today’s hottest musical hits. Working with a wide range of artists August has provided his writing talents to that of Justin Bieber, Musiq SoulChild, and Rihanna to name just a few. As an emerging star to the music scene August’s fresh success hasn’t come easy, not that he would ever let hard work come between reaching his dream of becoming a musical sensation.

a record.” This is a goal that shouldn’t be so hard to attain, with top recording exec L.A Reid standing behind him. It was August’s fly - on demand showcase for the exec and his staff that landed him a prompt signing with the industry mogul. Now that August’s single release is approaching we can only hope to see him touring soon. “I’m an old style guy at heart. I want to get in a car and go city to city and sing for people. Whether it gotta be the small bars until we get to the arena status. You got to go from radio station to radio station and sing for people.” As an artist connecting with your audience is the best way to establish an identity with them, creating that personal bond that enables the listener to gain a solid perception of the artist, “If people love you, they will buy your album. They want that album; they want to hold it in their hand- if they love you as an artist. I want to be on stage, and sing to people so they can really feel the emotion behind what I’m trying to do.” Augusts ultra swag and charisma will definitely be the pulling factor drawing

20

people to his shows so they can see and hear music, August’s style. While entering in the music industry August was confronted by issues unrelated to music. It was these issues that changed his outlook on the industry and decided to make a change to push him further into the limelight. “There’s a lot of pressure, even just appearance. Being in the gym, losing weight. I tell ya, a few years ago I was 230 lbs. It’s sad because its music, but there are all these other things that are involved that you need to be cognoscente of. Your style your swag, that’s everything.” When August met with industry head honcho L.A Reid, he knew the talented August encompassed what it took to become a star, and it’s with his faith and belief in the singer/songwriter that Augusts aspirations will soon turn to reality. In this cutthroat industry as well as in most areas in life hard work, dedication, and strong sense of direction are necessary for success, characteristics that August feels everyone should own.

“This is the best mentality that I think. I tell everybody. I was raised with this mentality. That whatever you are going to do, be the best at it. If you hold up a sign up at the corner of the street telling people to go to a store, be the best at it- don’t compromise yourself and your dignity, do the best you can do.” With that mentality, listeners, fellow producers and artists can only expect the best from August, in all faucets of life- but most definitely within the music scene. You can be sure of one thing when it comes to this tenacious singer songwriter, “I have always stood by knowing that I always wanted to stamp time with music. When my time here is done and you look back I want to carve out a spot for me in peoples minds when they think about music.” As time draws nearer to the release of August’s debut album and he continues his work with fellow artists, producing and writing great music, he will stop at nothing to bring us music to enjoy for years to come. “The world is always in need of good songs.”

Just about everyone in the world has experienced the kind of heartbreak that makes you pink in the cheeks to think about. Sometimes life comes at you in the most unexpected ways, and Anna is currently in the process of creating a breakout EP album as a way to rediscover herself and explore what it means to be an artist today. Anna began modeling in her first year of university to gain a sense of belonging and purpose in her new life outside of high school. “It was my way of being able to kind of go into the

Being a part of the world of modeling has proved to be extremely valuable to Anna and has functioned as a kind of platform to jumpstart her music career, “I have been in a couple music videos with bands like Stereos and Down with Webster and every time I work with them, I get to meet all of the people connected to them like managers and producers. And that’s the only way that I can do it, I just need to network my brains out.” Slowly but surely, Anna is making a transition into the music industry and she is doing it with a vengeance. After living through a very rough break-up

The album is going to be titled Eleven Eleven and she hopes for it to drop around July of this year, starting with a summer single, Try. She will certainly not be short on inspiration, as she is going to be working on the album while touring Canada with artist Scotty James. They will be opening for Sublime in Brantford, Ontario on June 5th and then they will be flying out West to play some shows and try to connect with some fans there. Along with working on her own music, Anna is also always working on submissions for artists like Alicia Keys and Sean Kingston. Go big or go home is another age old saying that rings perfectly true to this girl, and she is definitely not going home any time soon.

People often say that big things come in small packages, and this age old saying rings perfectly true to Anastasia Andranov; a model/singer/songwriter that is definitely here to be taken seriously.

last year, this album is kind of a now or never sort of deal for her, “It’s all about love, heartbreak, finding yourself and just letting go. Last year was so intense so I need to put that into this album and hope people fall in love with my songs.”

q&a for him

Give ‘em. Get ‘em. Enjoy? That is how things would work in a perfect world! You know, that world that actually only exists on a 1080mp flatscreen.

Picture this. She spends time figuring out the perfect location and sequence of the night’s events. Everything is prepped and ready to go (mind out of the gutter). He will arrive to the smell of his favourite meal-- homemade dessert too, music, and an impecibly wrapped sports jersey with St. Pierre tix hidden inside. She is prancing around in an outfit that would make a gay guy double take. Then enters the bf, late, unshowerd and in sweaty ball attire. He brings with him a LaSenza gift card stuffed inside a generic card. It is one of those extra meaningful gift cards, the ones with the good ol’ double bar code for the gas attendant to scan!

24

Sound familiar? You’re not alone! For hundreds, heck, thousands of years, women have wondered why the act of gift giving is such a feat for the harier half of our species? Why is it that whether a couple date for weeks or years, more often then not, he remains clueless in the gift giving department? I suggust passing (subtly of coures) along this insider’s perspective to help him out. Dear Gentlemen, if you have found (or have been guided) to this article, the purpose is not to rag on you. It is instead to help ease the pain of gift giving and ensure you stay in your girlfriend’s good graces on a regular basis. The “Top 10 Ways 2 Show She’s Special” moves are perfect for the next special occasion, when you are in the dog house or just to show you care.

“Top 10 Ways 2 Show She’s Special” 10. Flowers Cliché, but it still works if done correctly. Remember, it is better to get less of her favourite flower, rather than a slew of a mediocre flower.

9. A special note Slip an I love you, or sweet message into her lunch bag. Not only will it put a smile on her face at work, but it will give her collegues something to talk about too. 8. Introduce her to your hobby This is ubber meaningful, but tread carefully!!! The idea is to show her another side of you and capture her interest. So don’t take her to a WOW video gamers’ conference, instead place your bets and plan a surprise WII sports tournament with a couple she has been bugging you to spend time with. 7. Date Night I know it sounds so high school, but you would be surprised by the number of women who wish they still had date nights. Constant couple’s routines become monotones. Spice things up with a night on the town. Try martinis at the new hip bar in the area, or dance the night away at your favourite club. 6. Cook it out There is not too many things better than seeing your hottie slaving over a hot stove to take care of you. So find a new recipe and let the spoiling begin. Or better yet, buy all the groceries and cook the meal together. Think of it this way: the “quality time you put it before dinner, will likely be repaid after dinner (if you know what I mean). 5. Homemade art The point isn’t to create a Picasso, but instead to put sweat and tears (ok, maybe not tears, but you get the idea) into something she can keep forever. Her girlies will be “oohing and ahhhing” wishing their boyfriends had thought of the idea.

4. Jewelry Always a classic. Yet, it can be tough to wow and stay within your means! Think meaningful instead of the most expensive. If you need help with this idea, consider how easily $500+ earrings can be lost. 3. A weekend getway This sounds great, but again-- stay within your means! There is nothing like putting an elaborate vacation on your VISA, only to have your gf pissed that you are broke for the next year as you try and pay it off. Don’t be prideful. If a day trip is more in the budget, take her to that special pond you went to as a kid to skip rocks. She’ll love it! 2. Time is of the essence Our lives only get busier and busier. So why not kill two birds with one stone? Make arrangements for his & her massages or somethng new-age like reflexology. It will give you both time to relax, while still being close. 1. The all time best way to show you care… CONSISTENCY!! Continually doing small things to show she is cared for is your best bet to cancel out the random catastrophes. Now, when I say consistent small gestures, I mean small. Randomly pick up half a dozen chocolate cover strawberries because you know she loves them. Or drop off a night cap when you know she is stuck at work late. These moves ensure she alawys has a “you won’t believe what Scott did for me…” story to tell her friends. (Ladies LOVE these opportunities). Not to mention she will constantly feel cared for. That’s a wrap for now! If you are searching for answers to any of life’s tricky, sticky or icky questions hit me up at alexis@localiez.com. I am also always loooking for thought evoking, hilarious or embarassing stories from your day to day to include in upcoming columns. Cheers!

What’s For Dinner...? The warm and sunny days of spring are finally upon us! “Who has time to cook?” you say. Try this fast and easy dish that will bring the heat of summer right to your table! Use the same water to cook the carrots, al dante,(cooked but not soft) and set aside. If shrimp is frozen, thaw in a boil of cool water.

If you prefer, remove the tails. In a wok or large fry pan, pour a tablespoon or so of olive oil and and fry chopped garlic until it is tan in colour. Season the garlic generously with the italian seasoning, garlic powder and black pepper to your taste.

Once thawed, wash shrimp in a small amount of lemon juice or vinegar mixed with water. Rinse and drain. This will remove the “fishy” smell and taste.

It was a sunny morning in August 2005 when Troy Newton opened the doors to his Main Street diner for the first time. Armed with a couple of frying pans and supported by his closest friends and family, he could never have guessed what was to begin that day or that his restaurant would grow into one of the most popular in the GTA.

Troy’s Diner became the buzz of Milton and is still running stronger than ever. His open kitchen concept and unique “Coca Cola” red and white décor offers an element of entertainment that can’t be matched anywhere. The cracking of eggs, the buzz of a milkshake machine and the sizzle of a burger on the charbroiler are some of the sounds you will hear tableside while you soak in the visual extravaganza of trivia and memorabilia. A Little Bit of Home Grown Talent:

28

There once was a boy from a very small town with a very big dream to be his own boss. His name was Alex Colthart and he is now what we would call some serious home grown talent. Born and raised in Georgetown, Alex is the owner, executive producer and director of Rawfootage Productions; a company that has been pumping out music videos at rapid speed for the past few years. This September will be the 10th anniversary of the company. Alex started Rawfootage because he wanted to work for himself and be connected to the music industry. Alex began his career in the media industry working with a reality TV production company in their post-

production department. “I was employed with Peace Point Entertainment for two and a half years before starting Rawfootage fulltime.” By this time, Alex had long since decided that he wanted to focus his video production in the music industry. “I’m a very independent person and always knew since I was young that I would own a business. I enjoy the business aspect of running the business but also the art form of producing music videos.” He began producing videos for hip-hop artists such as Moka Only, Concrete Mob and DL Incognito in 07’ and 08’. It didn’t take long for Alex to broaden the horizon of the type of music videos that Rawfootage was producing. He began working with country artists like Alex J. Robinson who has been featured in the Ontario tribute commercials (“There’s no place like this...hmm hmm hm hm”) and

Jeffery Straker is another one of those artists that Rawfootage has worked with on a MuchFact project. The first video that Jeff and Alex worked on together was for a

The work that Alex is doing just keeps getting bigger and better with every video that pumps out of the Rawfootage machine. There was recently a third Jeff Straker video released (“Brand New Ocean”) and many other projects are on the way this summer. This small town boy is now a big man in the big city making big projects with some big people.

Along with Jeff and the MMM Top 10, Rawfootage produced a video for a west coast up and coming hip-hop artist called Sonreal (featuring local MC, Rich Kidd) last November. The video sat on the Much Music Top 30 for four weeks and has over 80 000 hits on Youtube.

American Idol finalists, the Piggot Brothers for their single “Rich Man”. That video was one of many that Rawfootage has had financed by being awarded with significant MuchFACT grants from Much Music. Rawfootage applies with the concept for a specific video, and Much picks out a select few out of hundreds of applicants to receive the grants. “We’ve produced three MuchFACT music videos and one FACTOR grant music video. Pigott Brothers, Concrete Mob and SonReal are MuchFACT videos and Jeffery Straker’s “Somewhere Between” music video was funded by FACTOR.”
