Dearest Localiez Readers, he fall season is here and though we may not want it to be, it is. So why not embrace the change and go with the flow. Many people shudder at the drop in temperature, but fall can be just as enjoyable if not more so than the preceding season. In light of this (and lets all hope that fall last’s longer than summer did) why not highlight some of the best fall activities.

Eason, a name we all may want to follow, is a 28-year-old who has put her good foot forward in Nashville Tennessee’s music scene. According to her, the competition has blossomed into an event that will bring eyes on Nashville as not only the home of country music, but as a place where dope beats and talented producers roam. After competing in the round-robin eliminations held each month, the remaining beat battlers will compete at the finale happening October 8th at Nashville’s Limelight Entertainment Complex.

meeting with Sony heads in Los Angeles. With prizes like these, Coko says the “Soundtrack Beat Battle� has attracted contestants from Atlanta, New Orleans and as far away as the U.K. and Italy. But some of the unwritten perks of the event is getting knowledge from industry professionals on contracts, copyrights and the importance of legal representation.

Coko is hoping to educate artists and producers about the consequences of not knowing what they have, what it may be worth, and that there is more to the industry than having your song on the radio. The benefits of planning and professionalism are just as important to longevity as talent. Battle On.

It’s not just this blending of genres which sets him apart, it’s his ability to capture his audience and enhance the live hip-hop show experience. “It’s more of a production, a 360 degree experience which wraps the act into a storyline, and puts the

Growing up in a home where hip-hop and rap music were banned led Stokes to explore new and different genres of music, forever seeking that

sound he describes as “different yet familiar”. Stokes first achieved fame from his hit single Cocoberry off of the 2002 LP Here and Now. The song and album achieved huge commercial success, however this alone did not satisfy Stokes. “I wanted to be different,” Stokes says. “Everyone was following the same conga line, how many different versions can you hear before you become desensitized? “When [Cocoberry] went to radio, it was a cool time, producers were looking for a Canadian talent

and I was the thumbprint of what they were looking for.” Through all this Stokes never let the success go to his head, “I didn’t realize how big the wave was at the time, basically I had to step back and go out on a high note.” His integrity led to a musical progression on a level seldom achieved by musicians nowadays - a unique blend of musical talent, incredible energy, and of course, showmanship; Stokes was reborn. In 2009 Stokes and the Truth released an EP titled Truth be Told. “People saw what we were

I can’t put a label on it, I take all of the sounds I love, and push them into a tube.”

Fans always say that Stokes raps about what matters most, being true to yourself. “I don’t want to do no Howard Stern rap,” Stokes says about his lyrics “No shock rap. ursuing dreams and passions takes a lot of commitment, drive, and belief in yourself and your abilities. Indian-Canadian singer and AIDS outreach ambassador, Prita Chhabra knows this all too well. Filled with insecurities about herself and her musical talent, Prita never believed that she would be able to achieve her dreams of becoming a singer, until a trip to Africa provided her with a ray of confidence. In 2008, Prita went to Malawi to help with HIV/ AIDS research efforts. This trip was a game changer for Prita. “Before I went on this trip I was really insecure and people told me I wasn’t a good singer,” she said. “And when I went on this trip, I was singing to myself on the bus and someone heard me singing and they said ‘you have such a beautiful voice.’”

This was the first time that people had truly wanted to hear Prita sing. “They took me to their home and taught me songs in their native tongue,” she said. “These are some of the poorest people I had met in my life and Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and they have so little and they were giving me so much. They were giving me so much confidence and they were believing in me,” she said with a laugh.

It was a wake-up call for Prita and just the push she needed to pursue her dreams. Realizing her love for music at the age of seven while listening to the radio, Prita grew up with her eyes on the stars. “It lit a spark in my heart and in that moment I just knew I wanted to be a singer,” she said. Although Prita had discovered her passion, she still faced many obstacles that crippled her ability to just go for it. “They said I would never make it because I’m an Indian girl playing English music and I had a lot of odds stacked against me,” she said. “ I thought I wasn’t good enough, I thought I wasn’t pretty enough. There

were all these reasons why I wasn’t fully committed to pursuing my dreams.” Every time Prita preforms she always sings one of the songs her friends from Malawi taught her as a thank you. She tells their stories, hoping to inspire others and educate North Americans about HIV/AIDS in our country and around the world. “There are still a lot of people living with it [AIDS] and dealing with it, and dealing with the stigmas about it. So if I talk about it, I feel like I’m taking the time to be a voice for people who don’t have one,” she said. Prita is currently touring North America, singing both the Canadian and American national anthems at NBA games as well as performing at notable festivals and along side #1 billboard performers such as Jay Sean. Her natural fusion of western and Indian sound provide her songs with a unique and very raw sound. Prita is getting ready to release her second album entitled Roots, which will be available this fall. Her video for her single “Roots” is available on her website.

veryone has heard of Sin City, but you haven’t truly experienced Vegas until you have experienced the nightlife. And just remember what happens there stays there!

This summer I rounded up the girls and headed to Vegas to find out what all the hype was about. We were dumbstruck when we arrived. The sheer size of, over-the-top architectural “bling” partnered with lights on every building and statue was absolutely incredible!

The hours flew by during the daytime. There was never a dull moment whether we were meeting new people from all parts of the world, soaking up sun poolside or walking for miles checking out the strip. However, we never could have imagined the fun to come once the sun sets in Vegas. Below you will find Top 10 Sin City Must-Visit Parties! Ultimate Sin City Party Guide 10. ROK Vegas – NY NY ROK had an amazing 360 degree music video feed around the club that got people pumped when big tunes were played. We arrived ready to dance at 11:30pm. Veronika London is Ruggedly Elegant

D

o girls really just want to have fun? Well according to the talented actress and model Veronika London, that’s only half true. With a busy schedule filled with acting assignments and photo shoots this hardworking girl is all about business. This fresh face to the independent entertainment industry is turning heads from print to television and film. While sipping carbonated water over lunch at Williams Landing downtown Toronto, Veronika and I had a chance to talk about her blossoming career and what she hopes to accomplish in the world of acting. “In grade 7 a friend of mine was doing a hosting gig. We were in the same grade and I was like I want to be in front of the TV too. And I would dream about it every night but every time I would bring it up, my parents said no.� Finally the time came for Veronika to take matters into her own hands and start what she had

been yearning to do since she was a youngster. In 2009 she started training with various acting coaches such as director/producer Ron Leach and Lewis Baumander. Veronika also attended Pro-Actors Lab where she began to hone in on her skills. “This is when I really started getting more exposure, with television and then with Maxim and then the music videos. It all just happened at the same time [so I thought] okay this might go somewhere.” And indeed Veronika has made something out of the opportunities she has been presented with. Starting with appearances on HBO’s Lingerie, all the way to her current projects. Expecting to be released at the end of the year, her newest film project titled Searching For Angels Veronika acts alongside long time actress Vivica A. Fox. Don’t forget her most recent brand affiliation with the UFC/MMA clothing line for women, Bombshell wear.

Aside from her candy coated looks she attests “I’m not fake, it’s too hard to play an image that is not real to the core.” Her down-to-earth attitude and well leveled confidence is something she believes that everyone can attain by simply “Being confident with who you are as a person.” This positive approach to self-image is one that should be recognized among women everywhere, it’s time we start feeling good about ourselves. Veronika states, “I’ve been judged, ripped apart and spit on for not being authentic. I once sought the approval of the media… now they can criticize me as much as they want- I’ve learned to play the game and laugh.”

Only accepting modeling assignments to further her acting career, Veronika desires to act in roles that push her to break her own boundaries. “I’ve always wanted to play a female version of the Joker. His mental state is definitely a challenge, in order to take yourself so dark without losing your mind, and being able to come back after would definitely be an emotional challenge.” Seeking to provide viewers with real emotion to feel and connect with, Veronika often relies on her own views and feelings to back the roles she plays. “I find you really have to learn about yourself in order to act because really all the choices you are going to portray through a character is really you.”

eing healthy is more than just eating well and being active. It is a complete lifestyle choice and is practised and developed every day. These days, with the mounting weight related health problems, being active and healthy is important and starting at a young age is idea. The Milton Youth Soccer Club (MYSC) in Milton promotes

with the early adolescents, 12, 13, 14 is what we’re doing for them is creating good habits.” The habits that the MYSC are striving to create for adolescents are habits of wellness. Justin along with the staff at the MYSC hopes to instill a foundation of wellness within their players. The MYSC hopes that the club can provide their players with a little more knowledge, “in terms of what is required to be healthy, and certain things you need to do from a nutrition standpoint to stay healthy and really just keeping active.” However, healthy habits don’t stop at childhood. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important at any age and can be pursued at any age. Justin believes that soccer can be a key player in approaching this lifestyle. “Soccer is one of those sports unlike some of the other popular sports that we have around here ie. hockey, where it is very easy at the age of 35 to pick up a pair of soccer shoes, join a league, a couple hundred bucks, sometimes not even, and get out there an play,” Justin explains. “Soccer is one of those sports that you can do as long as you can walk.”

Staying active during the winter is important to the MYSC so with indoor leagues, the MYSC gives people the opportunity to be active all year round. “Indoor soccer is a great sport on the recreational side just because you know soccer in general is a great sport but indoor soccer is a great sport because you know you’re in a gym and there are a lot of kids running around and it’s more fun for the parents sometimes it feels like,” Justin explains with a laugh. Localiez: Are iphones and ipads a necessity for successful businesses these days? JP: “I don’t think iPhone’s and iPad’s necessarily are a necessity. However Smart Phones and Tablets are. The days of desktop computing are coming to an end. iPhone and iPad are simply the leaders in this market as they have had such an overwhelming head start at being successful in the market. It’s an interesting time. The only time you find me using a desktop computer is for development. When I’m jumping from meeting room to meeting room, brainstorming, etc. I’m using my iPad.” Localiez: I see from your website that several banks (BMO, RBC) have been clients of yours, what are a few other companies which Applauz has worked with recently? JP: “My clients come from all different backgrounds. I build for banks such as BMO, RBC and Covarity Group to celebrity sites like Bif Naked, DMX, MC Lyte, and

Localiez: Could you tell us about any new upcoming projects from Applauz Media Solutions? JP: “Right now I’m trying to work on a project for myself and my music production. I’m working on a solution to allow artists to browse / stream a catalogue of my production in a Web App form (compatible with ALL mobile phones and tablets). This sounds very simple however I want this to feel like a true native experience on every mobile device using a build once, work-oneverything solution. Some of the prototype stuff I’m working on is an application similar to QR Codes except using ANY image as the marker. I have a lot of ideas. JP: “Combining the physical and real world is “Augmented Reality”. For example an architect may want to show clients his portfolio. It’s typically a binder of 2D photos. I would build the architect an Augmented Reality that allows him to show full 3D renderings of his work in the palm of his hand in real time.”

JP: “The Cloud App is an iPad app I built as an employee of OpenText. Basically the CSO [Chief Sales Officer] of the company wrote a book [Managing Content in the Cloud] and I created a way to take the knowledge in the book and turn it in to an engaging interactive experience that can truly be used by anyone. It can be used by anyone but it holds a lot of value in being an education tool for OpenText’s customers. The project has been very successful.”

A

buyer’s agent is a person or company that represents the interests of the buyer and with fiduciary responsibilities to the buyer. In contrast, a real estate agent represents the seller.

Today’s Internet-empowered consumer may think they have access to all the information they need to make a home purchase on their own. If this were true there would be no need for many business professionals in today’s world. The Internet can be a great resource but it doesn’t replace years of specialized education and practical experience. I was actively selling houses when the World Wide Web, as it was known back then, first made its appearance in the consumer world. And although you don’t hear it as much now as you did back then, the cautionary advice was . . . “Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.” Remember, the World Wide Web is just a collection of thoughts, notes, statements, etc., some true, some not, some professional and some just “arm chair” opinions not based on fact. However, such thoughts could lull consumers into a false sense of a know- it- all security. Sometimes buyers don’t understand that they will get better results if they commit to working with a qualified real estate professional at the outset of their house hunting process.

Let’s come back to my key question in this column: “Why do I need a Buyer’s Representative to purchase a home?” Let’s start by asking yourself the following questions:

Do I understand how to accurately interpret market data? It’s one thing to obtain this information but can you analyze it and use it to your benefit when preparing an offer? 4. Do I have the means to ensure my contingencies in an offer have been completed in a timely manner and conveyed properly to the seller so that my offer has a reasonable chance of closing? 5. Do I understand real estate representation and Agency Law? What’s the difference between me being a customer or a client? What rights and duties am I entitled to with a real estate representative or do I have any under the different representation agreements? Who is the real estate representative loyal to, the seller or the buyer? In other words, have I researched the value of formalizing a relationship with a buyer’s representative?

1. Do I have the time to research the residential housing market; changes, trends, location and type of property to purchase based upon my needs, while securing future saleability and a steady increase in resale value?

6. Am I familiar with the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) Residential Agreement of Purchase and Sale? More important, what about a home builder’s “For Sale By Owner” or the stationery store purchase contracts? Do I know how to interpret the various pre-printed clauses and do I know the specialized clauses needed to best protect myself from making common buyer mistakes?

2. Do I have access to the most up-to-date and comprehensive information on properties currently for sale, properties sold and properties that failed to sell? Here’s a good one. Today’s real estate consumer is under the false impression that Realtor. ca formerly MLS.ca is the local Real Estate MLS System. Let me clear this up for you. IT IS NOT! Realtor.ca is a voluntary

If so, you may want to consider picking up The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais. The story is about a young Indian boy’s journey toward his destiny as a world-class chef. The story will have immense appeal to those interested in culinary arts as it is rich with descriptive passages of exotic dishes.

Fall Reading for Everyone By Shannon White

To be honest, the mouth-watering descriptions weren’t quite enough to strike my fancy, however I kept reading and eventually I found myself rooting for Hassan along the way. The story spans across 4 locations and covers much of Hassan’s life, yet it moves quickly and does not mire you down with flowery details. The tragic moments in the story are so subtly incorporated that you could potentially miss them if you weren’t paying attention. But it is the very sting of surprise that allows the novel to maintain a light-hearted feel. I found Hassan’s tale to become far more engaging once the Hajis moved to Lumière, France. There, a family feud develops as do the rich and colourful characters that allow the story to shine. I am sure that foodies everywhere will love following Hassan across the globe as his story unfolds.

Beach Bums Are there any CSI fans out there? Perhaps you have watched Bones, a television show focusing on the forensic anthropology work of Temperance Brennan. What you may not be aware of is that author Kathy Reichs novels began it all! The series concentrates on Dr. Brennan and her work in both North Carolina and the belle province – Quebec. Although it had been awhile since I picked up a Reichs novel, I decided to try Flash and Bones, the fourteenth instalment in the series. If you have had the pleasure of reading her novels in the past, you may be wondering what happened to Detective Ryan. Not to worry, Tempe’s got game and a new love interest will keep you guessing. The story takes place in Charlotte during a significant NASCAR event. A body is discovered (a necessity for an anthropology thriller!) stuffed into a landfill barrel adjacent to the speedway, just days before the media frenzy invades for race week. Although the story is filled with the usual forensic anthropology fare, I found it less detailed than her previous novels. The story reads like its television show counterpart and seems to be missing the earlier Kathy Reichs pizazz. That said, if you are a Patricia Cornwell fan, you will still enjoy Flash and Bones (or any of the other Reichs novels for that matter). t all started several years ago with a conversation in a downtown Toronto park. I had asked a gentleman with a Pomeranian puppy how his dog’s coat was so soft and shiny. He said it was his food. That was all it took for us to start this passion for healthy and natural foods for dogs and cats. We were novice dog owners who foolishly believed that the national brand dog food that our puppy had come up on and the veterinarian agreed was “good food” had to be good food. The label, after all, said it was nutritious and designed specifically for my breed of dog. When I got home, I turned on my computer and started researching – in those initial moments of research I was appalled. What I had been feeding was full of corn and by-products. Literally one ingredient was “poultry by-product meal”. My ignorance ended after reading the label – and I mean really reading it. No wonder we’d had to force feed our puppy, the food was literally toxic to him.

The desire to help more pets and their owners was the inspiration for BauHound Haus Inc. We know we’re not going save every pet, but our hope is to spread the word and help as many as we can. Over the past three years, we have had countless people tell us we helped their pet and that is what matters most to us. We only stock our shelves with foods that we would feed our dogs. We give knowledge-based advice. If a customer comes in and says that they read online that one food is the best, we’ll help them understand that there is no such thing. The best food is the food that is the best for your dog. We don’t just sell, we help. That is the foundation of what makes our store different. If we can lend a good customer one of our old collars to get home because theirs broke on their walk (but they have more at home), we will. We have drove all the way to London and Kitchener to do diet consultations with customers. We have set up meal plans and met customers after hours when they realized they’d forgot they were out of food.
