Big, efficient things often come in very small packages. By: Danielle Marr

very three days or so I let out a very large unfortunate sigh of disappointment as I pull into Petro Canada. As the weeks crawl on by, the 1’s turn to 2’s, the 3’s to 4’s and eventually 6 is afraid of 7 eating 9 and all of a sudden gas is a $1.40. So what do we do? Stop driving? That seems a little bit extreme. Instead of giving up driving all together, North American’s are now quickly catching on to a slightly different idea. A happy medium, shall we say. Downsizing. The small car market seems to be growing right alongside the gas prices. And really, it makes perfect sense. People just needed a real kick in the butt to make them realize how much cheaper their busy lifestyles can be if they are spending 50% of what they normally do on getting from point A to point B.

I can’t think of any kind of vehicle that lives up to the concept of downsizing as much as that of the Mini Cooper! It’s even in the name! The Mini is a characteristically British/European car but since 2002 they have been gaining in popularity across North America as drivers have been losing more and more money to the skyrocketing gas prices. David Tucker, sales Manager of the Mini Dealership in Oakville attached to Budds BMW offered some insight into the concept of the growing small car market (no pun intended!), “The industry is changing a lot because

the markets are extremely competitive these days. Since there is so much to choose from. BUT I think that gas prices are making a huge impact on the industry these days in the way that the car market is moving. Mini’s are extremely fuel-efficient and have won many awards for fuel efficiency – but it’s a small car. The small car segment of the car market is increasing quite considerably so mini is the place to be, in that respect.” Mini is a fairly new addition to the North American car industry, and has been considered a little bit more expensive and luxury than your

average Ford or Toyota in the past, but David was quick to dismiss these assumptions, “Mini is about fun and uniqueness, it’s a very different car experience. They handle superbly, they are very fuelefficient and they are very safe but they are a lot of fun. They are also not as expensive as many people think they are, starting around 21 000.” There is even a new, not-somini, Mini on the market this year called the Countryman. It is a little bit more family friendly with a little bit more space but it still has the look as well as the fuel efficiency of a Mini. It is just one more step in the

direction of getting more and more people to use fuel-efficient vehicles, “people are starting to accept small cars in Canada and we are starting to see more small cars on the road with gas prices as they are. The Mini Countryman has helped with that as well but with the way that the car market is going, people are downsizing these days and the small car segment in the market is seeing bigger numbers every year.” While of course they will not be for everyone, the fuel efficiency, fairly modest price bracket and the slightly larger option of the Countryman…a Mini may just be the car for you!

With the support of his family and pursuit of his dream, Barry secured breaks that lead to his first demo with producers for Anne Murray; Kushal Kannah and John Ebata. Before I know it my imagination is visualizing the video. `This could be one of those infectious dance themed songs.’ I say. Kasual stomps around the far Long Island area, a local legend in many areas of expansive land mass, Kas (as he is commonly known) hit his stride a little more than five years ago. “Set it Off Records gave me a nearly $million$ deal. That was the real kick off.” Up until then he was the role of ghost writer and hype man for some acts around the way. But when the break came Kas answered. “I miss the stage, being in the spot light.” Kas reflects on his self-

relegation behind the scenes. My first serious of questions receive answers I wasn’t expected. Very little time for women, blunts and crazy clubs scenes; Kas kicks his strategy of business. Work, market and exploit. Work towards creating the right record; prepare to market it effectively and exploit for the most gains as possible. ith an impeccable fashion sense and dance moves to make you double take, Rodney O’Neal McKnight is about to cha-cha slide right onto your portable media device. Drawn to the big apple to pursue his dreams of dancing on the main stage, O’Neal perfected his fly moves travelling the world with the likes of Puffy and Outkast. Not only one of the scenes best movers, O’Neal happens to be one of the best dressed. Having styled celebrity icons such as, Usher, Luda, and Jessica Alba just to name a few, O’Neal is now about to make

his own way onto music charts with his new single “Crazy” produced by Junior Sanchez & Michael Moog. “I think from my fans life, being a wardrobe stylist, and still styling, they kind of gave me that seal of approval, because they’ve watched me evolve into a recording artist”. Aiming to take listeners from behind our laptops and cubicles, O’Neal desires to offer us music to lose ourselves in, to escape from our everyday lives. At the moment O’Neal’s focus is making good music, making people feel good. “I try to use my music and visuals to connect people instead of separating them, by using things that have affected pop culture in a positive way. Which is why you will find Back to the Futures actor Christopher Lloyd in O’Neal’s video “Check Your Coat”, aiming to capture a sense of nostalgia for the viewers

delight. In his upcoming video you should expect to see some popular faces, with celebrity cameos from Diddy, J.B Smoove and a few more surprises. “Crazy” will be the first of many hits to come from O’Neal as he seeks to please music lovers. “I do what I do for people. I don’t care what color you are, I don’t care what your sexual preference is, I don’t care if you’re short or tall, big or small- I do what I do for the people. Anytime I can make a person happy is a blessing for me.” With rock solid support from some of the industries best O’Neal should have no problem bringing people together. “I am really fortunate to be surrounded by a vast variety of influential people like my cousin Andre Harell, ~ founder of Uptown Records ~ Russell, and Puffy who’s like my brother.”

consider as well. Knowing that the path to greatness takes time but mostly hard work, O’Neal and is certainly setting the bar high and dressing to impress with his ultra swag moves, style and fly attitude. Sharing positive messages to inspire, O’Neal hopes he can shed light to other dream seekers, and impress on them to realize your potential. If you are great at one thing, doors to the future will open, pushing you through to experiences you’d never expected to have.

In terms of the generation we live in now O’Neal feels that “people want to be famous so bad that they forget about planting the seeds and building a foundation to stand on.” Something that O’Neal has been taking the time to do for himself and urges others to

ven though Hakim Bell shies away from his musical pedigree, it is hard not to mention the band Kool & The Gang if that is the genesis of an artist’s talent. So being the son of Kool, it isn’t a stretch to figure out where Hakim’s love for music comes from.

Hakim Bell, singer, songwriter and producer has taken the reins of artist and manager, after being schooled in the ways of the music industry his entire life. “Traveling taught me a lot,” he says about his world view and how touring has impacted his songwriting, “going to Africa and performing in front of

300,000 people is an awesome feeling.” Now it’s Hakim’s turn to leave his footprint on the industry. With his band called The Monarchi, Bell is dishing out sounds that one reviewer has described as `eclectic.’ Looking to fuse R&B, Jazz and Hip-Hop, Bell wants to move heads and souls with melodic lyrics meant to inspire and educate. Along with Hakim’s personal aspiration of music maker he has assembled a squad to help him manage, produce and market two young acts named Blossom and X2 (times two). The former being a band of young musician performers

which he says will surprise many. Bell describes X2 as a young Latino group filled with beauty, energy and talent to spare. “I’m looking to shop Blossom,” he says about the future of the group, “but we are using the Internet as well as traditional means to get them buzzing.” The group has already had some exposure on a couple of MTV reality shows which have used their songs for the show tracks. Hakim seems to be off to a great managerial start. As far as his songs and career, there seems to be no rush. “I can only do one thing as a time,” he says.

ashington D.C. really is filled with things ~ to see and do ~ at every turn. Localiez recently took to the streets of America’s capital to see how Americans bring in Independence Day. Visitors will not be disappointed by the firework demonstrations which filled the air at “The Mall” (aka The National Mall & Memorial Parks) and at a number of alternate areas around Washington’s core. An Independence Day parade showcased marching bands, military units, floats and political VIPs. The parade took place so close to the Whitehouse, which U.S. president Barack Obama calls home, that I wouldn’t be surprised if The Chief was spotted during the festivities!

Street performers, included live musical performances outside of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Multicultural food and an array of vendors scattered the mall area and there was an opportunity to take your picture with former presidents. (Ok, your picture is taken with someone in an over-sized costume, but still it was an entertaining and fun way to get presidential information out to the public). If aerospace isn’t your thing, another free entrance to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History will have you “OOOhing and AAAhing” at displays on each of the three jam-packed levels. After a break inside

to cool off from the 88oF heat, it is time to head back to the skillfully landscaped “mall” which offers hours of entertainment for one and all. Whether you recognize the monument steps from Martin Luther King Junior’s 1963 “I HAVE A DREAM” speech or from Sly’s performance in the movie “Rocky”, the gorgeous Abraham Lincoln memorial will resonate with you long after your visit. Localiez journalists could not leave D.C. without checking out some of the local food challenges. “Chick and Ruth’s Delly” (yes, that is actually how they spell deli) was the number one choice. The restaurant

has become well know across North America since their “Colossal Challenge” was highlighted by Adam Richman, on the television hit “Man vs. Food”. The challenge requires participants to drink not only a 6 pound—yes pound, milkshake of their choice, but also to devour a sandwich with 1 and a half pounds of meat inside. None of the Localiez team members opted to attempt the challenge: but wow did they ever enjoy their thick, creamy, flavourful milkshakes! Whatever the reason or the season for visiting D.C., Localiez assures you will most definitely not be disappointed! Anyone going soon???

Give ‘em. Get ‘em. Enjoy?

This is a tricky one. Females have a tendency to look within themselves to find out how they have impacted their partner. The problem? Many times the source of unhappiness is completely within your beau. With a wedding only weeks away you need to get answers. You need to know why the sudden changes in his personality before you tie the knot. There are so many reasons that could contribute to his change in behavior, but that is not for you to figure out. If this dude is the one you plan to spend the rest of your life with, communication is key! Boys-ahem, Men

I just found out my boyfriend’s ex has been joining in on the weekly boys only wing nights for the past month and a half. She is good friends with his boys and I know it isn’t a date between just the two of them…but… it bugs the hell out of me. Can I ask him to stop seeing her? - Chantal: Washington, DC There is no universal answer to this type of scenario. Every couple is going to differ on their views of exes as friends and its acceptability. I would caution treading very carefully when it comes to your input on

However, in the end his friends are his friends. Besides giving an ultimatum (which I strongly warn against!) he is going to make his own friendship choices. It is up to you to trust in him enough that even though this girlie from the past has popped up, he loves and cares about you and only you. You cannot be with him every second of every day and if he was going to rekindle something with her you wouldn’t be able to stop it—wing nights or not. I just found out that my boyfriend’s mom doesn’t like me. We have been dating for a year and 6 months and although his mom and I clearly weren’t ready to do mother-daughter Amazing Race Competitions, I thought we were cool. Now, I find out that she doesn’t like that I am not Catholic and that her scholar of a son is dating someone who works in retail. I

don’t know if I should approach her or leave things be? - Jessica: London, ON The thing is momsie is entitled to her opinion. As long as she isn’t’ trying to sway her son’s life decisions it really shouldn’t matter what she thinks of you. If you choose to approach her, ask yourself what you hope to get out of the conversation and if your expectations are reasonable? With that said, that is beyond frustrating and your religious and career ambitions are none of her business. As long as you and her son love each other it is none of her business. He must also believe this to make sure that she doesn’t become a little birdie in his ear constantly putting you down. J-Sin was the winner of the day at the Canadian National Trapshooting Championship, a sport of action which requires split-second timing. He won first place in the class singles open, the class high overall and the Canadian National overall handicap championship. The handicap event is considered the most prestigious event in trapshooting. It requires the more skilled marksman to position themselves a greater distance away from the trap house. This greater distance increases the skill and accuracy required to repeatedly aim, fire and break the 41/2 inch speeding clay targets. He has been shooting since a young age with his brother, John at their farm in Campbellford, Ontario. The shooting started as

a way to pass the time, kicking crushed pop cans into the air and hitting them with their Red Ryder BB guns – the competition between the boys was fierce (and still is today). They graduated quickly to bull’s eye target sessions, scoffing Canadian Tire money from relative’s cars which they used to pay for their practice pellets. J-Sin’s concentration, attention to detail and his competitive nature led to a love for the sport. Through hard work and determination he succeeded in achieving his ultimate goal – becoming a 2011 champion. I Get By On A Little Help From My Friends

Dane Hartsell

As it turns out, coordinating the schedules of an aspiring journalist and a rock star in the midst of his climb to stardom is a little bit more difficult than one might expect. After an extensive amount of texts, voice messages and phone calls, Dane Hartsell was finally in the flesh in the most natural of environments – a guitar in hand belting out soulful tunes with his

band in the heart of Toronto. Dane plays shows religiously every Monday at Joe Mama’s on King St. West. On this particular Monday in the smoldering heat of July, the air conditioning, cold beer, gaggle of friends that I brought along to check out what Dane was made of and the painfully honest bartender went along perfectly with the smooth

jazzy sounds that he seemed to be producing so effortlessly. Ahhh, summer nights. Dane is an unbelievably talented musician who refers to himself lightly as a “lucky duck,” generally being in the right place at the right time. He was discovered by Divine Brown while performing at a benefit concert for Hurricane

Katrina, “she basically heard me sing, got my info and gave it to her management company and that’s when my manager Cindy and I signed with Chris Smith Management.” Chris Smith’s artist roster consists of well-known Canadians such as Nelly Furtado, K-OS and FeFe Dobson. He has been able to

put Dane in touch with some fantastic producers that have allowed him to develop and grow as an artist that will be taken warmly by the more mainstream crowds of listeners. “Two producers, Jeff Dalziel and Dave Lichens kind of took me in and taught me how to really song write in a way that speaks to people as opposed to what I was doing before. and his girlfriend singing along to every word as he plays his heart out at these shows each Monday night. Dane has learned the value in gaining strength from those around him and he continues to grow as an artist because of it. “The good thing is that I have a lot of amazing friends who have stayed by me and kept me really strong. or almost any die hard basketball fan reminiscing on the ‘96 NBA finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Seattle Supersonics brings about feelings of excitement that some of us feel will never be replicated. For homegrown Ontarian, Imad Qahwash those memories of watching NBA pros Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are at the forefront of his mind. “I used to come home from school and my parents would always be watching the Chicago Bulls in ‘96. Watching the NBA finals, with my family and friends kind of just inspired me, with all those great players to look up to and sort of idolize,

those kinds of things motivated me to do what I had to do.” The goals Qahwash needed to accomplish just so happen to involve pursuing an Olympic appearance, and playing basketball internationally on the Jordan National team, is just his way of getting there. “It’s really great to represent a whole country and try to get somewhere. Being apart of a national team who’s got the pieces together to really do something special I feel so privileged and grateful that I have this opportunity.” Going from the Ukraine to Russia then finally to China for the FIBA Qualifier, Qahwash and his teammates approach the tournament season to earn their

entry into the 2012 Olympics. Qahwash admits “there’s no way that I could have done any of this by myself. There’s a lot of influential people, you know family and coaches.” The talented player relies on motivations from a strong core of individuals closest to him. “ I really appreciate my father- my family, since I have been in high school they have really been close knit with me although, you have to be willing to make sacrifices in order to do great things. It’s crazy not being in my hometown and not seeing people for years, since my commitment to be the best.” Though far from home Qahwash continues to represent

Canadians internationally, finding strength and solace in his supportive family, coupled by the support of past coaches and faculty members from Grand River Collegiate and his alma mater Central Arkansas. With amazing opportunities unfolding for the skilled point guard, Qahwash is putting in the grunt work to achieve his goals. When he didn’t get much playing time his freshman year Qahwash pushed harder to obtain his time on the ball court. Saying to him self “no, I’m going to keep improving and stay in the gym and have a positive outlook.“ While maintaining a clear mindset to get through each day Qahwash

Working diligently with coaches and team members to realize this feat Qahwash refuses to accept failure, “if you fail at something you shouldn’t just give up. Shane Bascoe “It’s not what you say, it’s what you do.”

IEZ: What is your full name?

BASCOE: I started playing basketball at the age of 6.

3. Receiving my first of three CCAA All Canadian Awards in my 2nd year of college. 4. Receiving my CCAA Player of the Year in 2000. 5. Receiving my CCAA Coach of the Year award in 2008.

IEZ: When did you know that basketball would be a part of your life forever?

IEZ: What motivated you to become a college basketball coach?

BASCOE: I knew that basketball would be a part of my life when I started coaching the Sheridan women’s basketball program in 2005.

BASCOE: After finishing my playing career overseas, I wanted to coach a program and show what I knew as far as developing players at the college level being a college player myself. Also, my wife played university basketball. I would watch every game, while my teammates were so disinterested. I had tremendous respect for women’s basketball at the university level and I thought I could develop a program and emulate the same type of commitment at Sheridan College.

IEZ: At what age did you start playing basketball?

IEZ: What are your top 5 basketball memories? BASCOE: 1. Getting my first allstar award in 1988 due to two grade 8 students not being able to attend a tournament in Brampton due to religious reasons. I got my opportunity to play and I didn’t let anyone down. 2. Getting my first MVP award in 1989 at the Peel Championship tournament the very next year as a grade 8.

IEZ: Who were some of your

role models growing up? BASCOE: Some of my role models were Isaiah Thomas, Michael Jordan, Jim Flack (Head Coach of Sheridan College) Pat Summit (Head Coach of University of Tennessee Women’s basketball )and Geno Aureima (Head Coach of University of Connecticut Women’s baseketball). IEZ: Tell us a little bit about the Shane Bascoe Basketball School? BASCOE: The Shane Bascoe Basketball School was created and inspired by my mentor Jim Flack, who developed the Jim Flack basketball academy. It started as a program to develop guards who were interested in playing postsecondary basketball at all levels. I had a great experience playing professionally and had opportunities to try out for the Canadian National team and I had picked up so many little

secrets from those players. I felt I could teach them at camps to enhance the performance of players. IEZ: What inspired you to start a Basketball School for the younger generation? BASCOE: My son began watching basketball at the age of 2 and picked up on little nuances of the game through me coaching rep basketball and college ball. By the age of 5, he was doing things with a basketball fundamentally that I had not even known of at age 14. He was so natural at it and I figured that if he could learn, imagine the possibilities if I attempted to do this with a program of kids like the Milton Stags. IEZ: What advice do you have for young athletes with a passion for basketball or any passion in general? BASCOE: The best advice I could give is that if you are truly

scorer. I am just attempting to teach him how to play the game the right way and through all of the training we do, my wife and I know it will teach him how to work hard for something he truly wants. As far as his basketball career…. I`m not too sure. If he continues to pursue basketball at this pace, he will be a better basketball player than I was. He is much smarter, tougher and has someone to teach him one to one. Where ever it takes him is fine with me.

passionate about something, “it’s not what you say, it’s what you do.” Work on it over and over until it becomes your craft. Success and confidence is reflection of repetition. This is very similar to the work you put into the classroom with your studies. You become confident because you know what to do and how to do it…. Well!!

BASCOE: 1. Anything you can learn from someone who is willing to teach you…. Take it!!! Be a sponge! Don’t act like you know it all because learning in a life-long experience. 2. If you want to be good at anything, you must work at it. “When you’re not someone else is!” Skip the video games and hit the courts to get better. Don’t be a dreamer, live the reality! 3. From him

30

My girlfriend and I have been dating for about a year now. We have fun times together and I think she is great—but, she is so irresponsible with money and her career. I cannot see myself with her long-term. I have tried to talk to her about my concerns a number of times and without fail she gets so hurt and teary eyed that I end up consoling her rather than expressing my feelings like adults. I think we need some “space” but don’t know how to tell her. - Jake: Brampton, ON First and foremost, be true to yourself. As her bf, you need to be in her corner and support her and if you cannot see yourself with her long term then it is only fair for you to fill her in as soon as possible! It wouldn’t be fair to waste her time or your own.

If she cries every time you try and have a serious conversation, the chances are she senses something is up and is doing her best to avoid the conversation. This means you must go in prepared to stop the cycle of tears and & break avoidance. Breaks are tricky. People have very different perceptions of how they work. Prepare yourself by a) being sure that is what you truly want because you may never get her back after said “break” b) know your reasoning and be prepared to share it with her (kindly of course!) –especially if she is unaware of your change in feelings. C) Don’t stay around as her support system. This sounds harsh, but if you are the one causing her heartache, you cannot possibly also take on the roll of consoler. Let her utilize her friends and family during this time. If this space is going to work you

both need to see where you are without each other. It may sound harsh, but if worrying about her is stopping you from taking the time you need- be warned— she is going to be upset regardless, so why drag things out to the point that they may not be fixable? I just found out the girl of my dreams has and STI (sexually transmitted infection). We have only been dating for three months but I have liked her for nearly 2 years. Things are getting pretty serious and although I was grateful she divulged this information before things went further, I am unsure that I want to risk my health being with her. -Scared: Toronto, ON Phew, for her honesty! STIs are petrifying. No doubt! They are not something that anyone wants to deal with. However, she has come forward with her

situation and now it is up to you to use that information to decide how intimate you two become. Depending on the STI, medication may be available to keep the infection under control. Yet, in the end, you need to be comfortable with your choices. If this information is a deal-breaker, then it is what it is. Unfortunately with STIs usually ( of course not in all cases) a person’s irresponsibility has brought them into the situation and now they have to deal with the ramifications with potential partners. This is probably her biggest weakness, so if you do decide to break things off be kind and honest. On the other hand, if she really is your dream girl, be sure to speak to a doctor and be safe!!

hether or not you’re in a book club or more of a poolside reader, Localiez has some summer reading recommendations that will keep you entertained. These debut novels will keep your mind off the heat this summer as you work on your tan or sip Margaritas by the pool. Book Clubs This issue’s recommendation for the more serious reader is Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors. The story is set in 17th century India however don’t let

that fool you. This is no history text book! Beneath a Marble Sky tells the tale of the building of the Taj Mahal. The emperor built this historic landmark as a testament of his love for his wife - a rarity in a time when women were not valued.

Sky will entice you with classical themes of familial power struggles, epic battles, and of course romance as well! This page turner is sure to be enjoyed by all readers even those new to historical fiction.

The story focuses on Princess Jahanara, the courageous and politically savvy daughter of the emperor. Despite her existence in the 17th century, readers can easily relate to Jahanara’s fortitude and are quickly drawn into her tale. Beneath a Marble

For those who prefer less serious fare in the summertime, Localiez recommends Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald. If you have enjoyed Emily Giffin or Sophie Kinsella’s shopaholic series, you will love this twist on traditional chick lit. Veil of

Roses is a charming tale about Tamila Soroush who is sent to live with relatives in the US in pursuit of an Iranian American husband. Given her immigration constraints, she has but 3 months to find the man of her parents’ dreams. While finding her true self in America, Tami experiences many firsts ranging from Victoria Secret to line dancing. When she meets an American man, she is faced with a tough decision -- to follow the wishes or her parents or those of her heart!

• losing their dream home to another buyer or,

• (worse) buying the wrong home for their needs.

This column discusses the most common and costly home buyer pitfalls, how to identify them and what you can do to avoid them: 9 Buyer Pitfalls 1. Bidding Blind What price should you offer when you bid on a home? Is the seller’s asking price too high, or does it represent a great deal? Failing to research your market in order to understand what comparable homes are selling for, making your offer would be like bidding blind. Without this knowledge of market value, you could easily bid too much, or fail to make a competitive offer at all on an excellent value. These types of mistakes are even more prevalent with buyers attempting to buy “for sale by owner” properties. Hire a real estate buyer representative early in your game plan to help you with these details. 2. Buying the Wrong Home What are you looking for in a home? A simple enough question, but the answer can be quite complex. More often than not, buyers have been swept up in the emotion and excitement of the buying process only to find themselves the owner of a home that is either too big or too small, maybe they’re stuck with a longer than desired

4.No Property Survey As part of your offer to purchase, make sure you request an updated property survey or at the least a survey in the owner’s possession which shows the house and clearly marks the boundaries. Depending on the currency of the survey, you may find that there are structural changes that are not shown (e.g. additions to the house, a new swimming pool, a neighbour’s new fence which is encroaching a boundary line, rights of way, easements, encroachments, etc.). This document is also very helpful to your Lawyer on closing. Don’t fall into the trap of being told that you do not need a survey because you have Title Insurance. This is not true. Failure to diligently attempt to obtain this document could be the basis for a claim against the Title Insurance company to be denied. In addition, a survey can be useful if you plan adding an addition, a swimming pool, or the like to your property, or if you sell, the future buyer may want a copy. The cost for a survey? Approximately $1,400 for a residential survey. Be very clear on this matter. 5. Undisclosed Fix-ups Don’t expect every seller to own up to every physical detail that will need to be attended to. Both you and the seller are out to maximize your investment. Ensure that you conduct a thorough inspection of the home early in the process and prior to submitting an offer to purchase and hire a professional home inspector . The Home Inspector’s job is to objectively view the home inside and out. Make the Agreement of Purchase and Sale contingent upon the Home Inspector’s report. The Home Inspector should be able to give you a report of any item that needs to be fixed with associated, approximate cost. Avoid making your decision on choosing an Inspector based on price. Home Inspectors are not regulated in Ontario. This means you could end up with a part time taxi driver as an inspector. Ask your Realtor for recommendations and ask for references. 6. Not Getting Mortgage Pre-approval Mortgage pre-approvals are fast, easy and free. Don’t get confused with a “Mortgage Pre-Qualification” which is usually based on several contingencies needing to be fulfilled prior to the loan commitment (employement letter, income verification, etc.). When you have a pre-approved mortgage, the financial institution has committed. You can shop for your home from a position of continued on page 37

• paying too much for the home they want, or

On the final closing arrangements, your Lawyer will offer you Title Insurance. Take it!

Secure yourself a Lawyer early in your home search stage this way if you have any legal questions you can have them answered right away. In addition you can make sure very early in any negotiations, with a quick phone call, that you will own your new home free and clear by having a preliminary title search completed. The last thing you want to discover when you’re in the back stretch of closing a transaction is that there are encumbrances on the property such as tax liens, undisclosed owners, easements, rights of way, leases or the like.

o matter which way you look at it, buying a home is a major investment. But for many home buyers, it can be an even more expensive process than it needs to be since they fall prey to at least a few of the many common and costly mistakes which trap them into either:

It was a sunny morning in August 2005 when Troy Newton opened the doors to his Main Street diner for the first time. Is everything covered? If you rush this process on the day of closing, you may run into a last minute snag that you can’t fix without compromising the terms of the deal, the financing, or even the sale itself. Venere Salon and Spa

When I woke up, I mean, when Kathleen completed my massage, she led me to the hair salon area. That is where I met Andre. Andre and I discussed my “usual” hair colour choices; however, he suggested a more fashionable alternative. I felt very comfortable with his suggestions and because Andre was so knowledgeable

Upon my arrival (15 minutes early of course -spa etiquette), I was welcomed by the friendly receptionist who immediately attended to me. Within seconds, I was whisked away behind

a magical door that led to the calming and tranquil Spa Oasis area. There, soothing classical music was playing in the background. After being offered a tea, I took a few moments to relax before I was greeted by Kathleen. Kathleen escorted me to one of the private spa rooms where I enjoyed a onehour aromatherapy massage. I have to confess, Kathleen did such a great job that I actually fell asleep on the table!

The Venere personnel invited me to experience their half day chamomile spa package along with their full salon services. I was assured that my visit would be the perfect combination of relaxation and tranquility: a perfect way to unwind after a busy week. To be totally honest, this was my first full day spa experience, so I did not know what to expect but, WOW. It completely surpassed all of my expectations!

What a great choice: I LOVE IT!! My cut was an inverted bob with a longer front and side bangs. When Andre was done working his wonders, I felt like a movie star. The Venere staff was so efficient that while my hair colour was setting, I was able to slip back into the spa area where Sarah gave me a wonderful hydrating French manicure, followed by a

hydrating French pedicure. When Sarah was done, my hands and feet looked radiant. My final stop was in the makeup chair with Kathleen. Kathleen worked her magic and turned me into a super model. I could definitely get use to this type of pampering. I think it is obvious that my visit to Veneer Salon and Spa was a refreshing escape for my mind, body, and soul. The staff genuinely cared about my needs and worked hard to create a personalized spa experience for me. I whole heartedly

recommend Veneer Salon and Spa to anyone looking for a peaceful and revitalizing body boost. The staff at Venere enjoy what they do. They also enjoy working with each other, which transcended into the way they treat their clients.
