Under the Guidance of
His Majesty King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein
51
INTRODUCTION “Al Rayah Monument” is a proposed design for The Royal Hashemite court competition. The competition is aimed at 4th and 5th year Architectural students from Universities all over the Kingdom. We were given a 3 week period, a site, and criteria to abide by. The monument will be the centerpiece in the 100 year anniversary of “The Great Arab Revolt” celebrations to be held in June. It’s design has to be derived from this great event with indications to Jordan, it’s people, and His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Al Hussein who will be attending. It was a great honor to be given this chance and we jumped on it immediately realising that it’s a one time opportunity. We as students mostly design theoritically, the fact that this monument was actually going to be built made this experience beneficial architecturally and challenging at the same time. We learned a lot about not only design, but also structure and taking into consideration the cost which was probably RHC’s plan the whole time.
4
In this booklet, we will discuss the methodolgy and thinking process behind the design. We thought it would be interesting to make the sequence in a story telling fashion. The difficulties on the way and some initial concepts that we disregarded are also discussed to make this a comprehensive outlook. We start off talking about our site visit and analysis. We then talk in detail about the research and how we saw the story of the Great Arab revolt from our perspective. The conceptual phase of the design is discussed thoroughly with the keywords used to derive the forms. A display of plans, elevations and 3d shots represent our final conclusion. A detailed economic study of our design is attached with a time frame which proves that it can be built on time. Finally, we as students would like to thank his Majesty and RHC for this opportunity and for their show of trust in us. Good luck to all particpants.

SITE VISIT On Thursday, 12th of November we visited the site for the first time. We saw the ongoing excavations on Al Rayah Parade Ground and Al Rayah Building. Architect Linda pointed out to us where the Monument was to be set. She explained briefly what was expected from the design and the estimated dimensions of the monument area. We benefited from this visit by : 1. Visualisation for the ground and it’s surrounding. 2. The measurements of the surroundings and it’s relationship with the monument 3. There is a possibility for a view from Al Istiklal Street. 4. The east road adjacent to the monument is sloped, creating a possibility for a connection between the lower and the monument. 5. A summary of the sequence of events the day of the parade. 6. The views we have to take into considerations especially His Majesty’s view and the proposed view of the audience. Our second site visit was on Monday, 16th of November. We didn’t enter the premises but instead went to Al Istiklal street to experiment with the views from the street.
6
PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS
8
The important factors we came up with during the site analysis phase: 1. How to work with the building. The idea is to have them work together and have a mutual connection. 2. The different views from various locations on Al Istiklal street. This can be used to tell a story through the formation, as will be detailed later. 3. The height of Al Rayah Building and what works propotionally with that height. We want the monument to stand out without enforcing itself on the building. 4. The sun movement and the possibility of designing the shadow projections. 5. Having the monument in a way be part of the celebration. It can have a function. 6. The type of soil means we need a deeper foundation for whatever structure we make.
9
RESEARCH We researched monuments from all over the world as case studies. especially monuments made for military events and purposes. What really caught our eye was the rigidity and also the literal representation used in most of them. We took into consideration a literal approach with the use of soldiers for example but decided against it because an abstract model would in our minds send a stronger message. The Great Arab revolt was already familiar to us through our years of studying in schools and university, but we needed to look at through the eyes of Architects. We wanted to symbolise the story and extract keywords. These keywords

would then be turned into forms and translated architecturally. Jordan is made up of a unique fabric. This country was under it’s leadership always thrive to be better. It’s history is rich, it’s people are young and educated, there is endless potential. The hospitality shown by it’s people is unparalled. Materials was another important aspect. We had a budget that must be met. Using materials that don’t exist in abundance in Jordan meant higher cost and made no sense for a Jordanian monument.
STORY ANALYSIS The Great Arab revolution’s first bullet came from Al Sharif Hussein bin Ali’s gun in the holy city of Mecca. The sound wave caused by this brave initiative not only changed the course of history for all Arabs but also proved to be the spark that restored their confidence and courage to change the suffering they were living under the Ottoman occupation. The reverberation of this great event caused armies to march forward , Jordan, Iraq and Syria, being the main forces all deriving their power from the guidance of the Hashemite Leadership. At the end they prevailed. Until this day, exactly 1 century later, Jordan still preserves and lives by the essense of this revolution. It is probably the only country in the region that still does. The Revolution’s main goal was to unite all Arabs under one leadership. Looking at the region currently we can see that it has strayed from this. Empahasising this event at this current time is important. At the end this revolution was not only Jordan’s revolution but it was for all Arabs. We must not forget that

CONCEPTUAL TRANSLATION “ Axes of the Story ” Axes derived from the important areas of the “Great Arab Revolt” story as follows: First, Mecca being the start of it all. Pointing to Al Kaaba, the holiest Islamic site. Second, Syria, the first responder. Pointing to Nasb Salah Al Deen, which symbolizes Courage and Power. Third, Iraq, the most effected by the event. Pointing to Nasb Al Shaheed, a symbol of sacrifice. Fourth, Palestine, the ongoing tragedy. Pointing at Al Aqsa mosque, Al Sharif Ali’s final resing place. Finally the sky, Symbolizing hope for the bright future.

“ Views that tell a Tale “ After visiting Al Istiklak Street. We took pictures from the first place where the monument becomes visible. This was our first viewpoint for design. Then in the middle of the road we took another picture, and finally ended with pictures from above the pedestrian bridge where the view then fades. To build on the previous idea, we experimented with combining these thoughts together. Both ideas have to work side by side for a more comprehensive formation. We suggest that the ground that is parrallel to Al Istiklal street be flattened or at the very least sloped to become visible throughout the street. Having the monument be visible will make it a lot stronger and more of a landmark.
14
15
“ Social, Military, Political, and Economical “ One of the design requirements was to symbolise all four aspects of Jordan. The way we visualised it was that they must be represented vertically because there is a heirarchy between them and they depend on each other. The Political and Military apsects, both represented by his Majesty and the Armed Forces, create the stability that we live in everyday. There is no Economy or Social aspect without security and wise leadership. We visualise that the base must be wide, strong and reliable. The shape gets thinner as it climbs to the sky. This symbolises that when Social and Economical aspects prosper we elevate to a brighter future.
16
“ The Seven Pointed Star Seven has a significant meaning to Jordan, It symbolises the Hashemite leadership and the star in Jordan’s Flag is seven sided. We reformed this shape both vertically and horizontally and represented it indirectly in all axes. The whole top view when finished should represent this formation and all the elevations. When attempting this taking into consideration the previous ideas the form started to evolve.
17
“ Past, Present, Future “ As the saying goes “ A nation without a past is a nation without a future “. Jordan has a rich past and it’s people are attached and feel proud about it. The past should be represented by the story of the sequence of events of the revolt. This past is the base in which the present and future are built. The present is the spine that is attached to the past and leads the way to the future. Our security, leadership, economical reform, and freedom all form this present. Another important aspect is Jordan’s unparralled show of hospitality. This has made the Jordanian fabric a resilient texture of many threads to form a unique society that should become a model to look up to. Everyone puts their differences aside and prospers together. The future is the grace that is elevated to the sky. It should be bright and full of hope. It’s materiality should differ to give it the significance it deserves without taking away from the journey that led up to it.
18
“ Caligraphy “ Jordan cannot be seperated from it’s Arabic Origins. The dilemna we faced while designing was how to represent the story of the revolt in it’s complexity. Using Caligraphy solves both problems. “ Allah, Al Watan, Al Malik “ meaning “ Allah, Motherland, The King “ was the most representative choice of wording for our caligraphy. It is the basis that all other elements revolve around and is the perfect slogan for the Military and Political Base. We deconstructed the Caligraphy in a way to make less literal and more abstract. This also puts empahsis on the Journey and story of the Arab revolt. Elevation wise we also made an abstract representation of the Caligraphy.

AL Rayah Parade Ground
20
AL Rayah Monument
“ Al Raya Monument and It’s Surroundings “ The monument must complete it’s surrounding and not be intrude on the design and enforce itself. We thought about linking the monument with the building through materiality., but that proved not to be a viable option because of the exagerated cost. The alternative was to start the edges of the monument with stone and fade it into the main material which we picture as being fair faced concrete. The monument is placed 100 meters away from Al Raya building. The proportionality of the horizontal height must be reasonable. The flow in movement of the vertical elements must be curved mirroring the curvature in the Elevation.
