New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, United States, 2007 SANAA Architect The New Museum of Contemporary Art is designed byJapenese architect Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA)and it is the first large-scale art museum in Manhattan. Wrapped in a layer of white coat and silver plated metal mesh, people can see the city street through the windows.Inside the building, there is a gallery, theater, cafe, shops, education area, and multiple roof balcony, etc. Clipped in the narrow street as it is a typical city street style in New York . The small base is a challenge for any architect who wants to design a large-scale exhibition space on the site. And in this way, vertical development is inevitable, but the biggest problem is how to arrange the streamline of the exhibition space and avoid the effect of this large building volume on the surrounding old structures.

Moriyama House, Suburb of Tokyo, Japan, 2005 SANAA Architect The Moriyama House is an example of a minimalist steel prefab house which holds a different concept than a typical apartment in Tokyo. In a small neighbourhood, a large building would appear out of place. In response, the program was divided into smaller components from the whole. The “Moriyama House” is a housing complex comprising a concentration of ten cuboids of various sizes in the middle of a rectangular surface area. At first these “boxes” give an appearance of being wildly intermingled— but upon second glance the design of the gardens and interjacent pathways can be discerned. The buildings are some occupied by Mr Moriyama himself, some are shared facilities while the rest of the units are rental units of varying sizes. Landscape, city, and house become indistinguishable.

Fitzroy Indoor Swimming Pool Khalisha Mthasnan and Siman Wang The whole idea came simply from the small scale of SANAA’s Moriyama House, of which instead of putting a large scale building filling up the whole site, the concept is more of breaking it up into smaller rectangular boxes. Each box has its own function, and sits in a balanced manner, connected to one another. The main indoor pool itself is another box, a combination of white concrete and full height glass panels to allow maximum sunlight and close relativity to what is going on the outside. The design seamlessly integrates the interior and exterior relationship, without making such a big gesture on the boundary. The whole site is together, connected by the landscape which also serves as pathways

Fitzroy Indoor Swimming Pool Khalisha Mthasnan and Siman Wang The idea behind this indoor swimming pool holds a strong concept of intimacy while keeping its boundaries very subtle and soft. The space within the three sided walls mainly is the ‘courtyard’ where in this design, the pond is replaced by a public swimming pool. Both curved roof, although seemed to be alike, they are not symmetrical but the balance of each side is maintained. From the upper mezzanine floor, one can view of whats going on ground floor, overlooking the pool and frames the view outlooking the other side of the site. The element of a geometrical featured wall is put facing the main road, to act as an aesthetic vibe to the ongoing viewers, not just as an attraction but functions as a singular perceptive layer from the outisde to inside.
