Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - First Year Masters Project Jacksonville Soccer Stadium The Jacksonville Soccer stadium is a part of the proposed master plan to redevelop the Jacksonville Downtown East area. The soccer stadium is the missing link between the baseball stadium and the football stadium. The proposed site is located to the north-eastern region of the proposed redevelopment area. Its on a direct axis with the central plaza and the waterfront and has the opportunity to serve as beacon or visual landmark.


studio work The design idea was to express this opposition of the game in the form. A series of fluid line explorations were done investing the expression of similar but dissimilar elements. The scheme expresses this as a series lines which connects to the ground through the ramps and flows up into the main entry platform which then loops over and forms the canopy for the grandstand and then back into the ground. The stitching of the soccer ball was expressed in the facade as the structure that holds the stadium together.

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - First Year Masters Project Jacksonville Soccer Stadium The building utilizes a hybrid Concrete and Steel Structure. The Lover Levels consist of 3 - 20 foot deep columns which support a waffle slab system for the main entry level . The Concrete columns pass through the waffle slab to act as the primary support for the stands. The Entire facade is made up of structural 1’6� steel. The Upper floors are supported by steel trusses that span between the concrete column and the Facade. The facade is not only structural but it acts as a shading device for the building.


studio work The building uses a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation systems. The HVAC system used is chilled beam system. The Air handlers and water chillers are located away from the public zone in the service yard, and the ducts and Chill water pipes are routed underground to the respective mechanical rooms.

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - First Year Masters Project Envelope Design : Avery Fisher Hall Lobby The requirement for the Integrated Building Envelope Design Project, was to redesign an existing lobby space for the Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts in New York. The 5-story lobby space was to be designed integrating vertical circulation, structure, building envelop, HVAC and lighting systems, in order to create a meaningful architectural space which successfully addresses the overall quality of space, natural and artificial lighting, environmental comfort, views, aesthetics, functional circulation, structure, and construction details and connections.


studio work In addressing these issues a number of solutions were put in place. The structure was expressed on the exterior to pay respect to the square, An inverted curtain wall system with double glazing to give floating glass box effect, which was protected by operable fritted glass louvers to minimize heat gain in the summer and allow more light to penetrate in winter. Also, a continuous ramp system offering views towards the square as patrons made their way to the performance spaces.

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - First Year Masters Project Synchronic Architecture: Digital Museum Contrasting with the diachronic solution I challenged the museum’s traditional building type and sought to re-define it as it exists today. The diachronic solution saw the spaces being laid out in a manner representative of the traditional sequence through which one is expected to experience a museum. The spaces were also internalized. I sought to invert the concept of the museum. The museum is traditionally seen as a container of information providing education to only those that enter its walls. Why shouldn’t the new museum give a sample of what it has to offer? Why shouldn’t it evoke curiosity and be inviting which eventually leads to education.


studio work With the growth of the digital age humans have become reliant on digital devices. The laptop, the tablet, the cell phone have become the modern day social gathering place, the modern say store, the modern day library and even the modern day museum. Why not embrace this medium and make it more interesting. Why not integrate it with architecture to create an enticing and exciting educational experience? Immerse the user within and 360 degree digital screen with information displaced all around, Interaction by touch, gestures and voice, user friendly menu choices, and gain from the advances in 3-D scanning and photography.

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - Urban Design Project

The Point: Tallahassee

The Point: Tallahassee project was a team effort with 3 other colleagues from the M.Arch. program which proposed an urban intervention for the intersection of two major thoroughfares: Apalachee Parkway and Magnolia Drive. The intersection currently divides the area into four distinct zones, each of which has very large surface parking lots. The strategy was to connect these zones with an elevated pedestrian park over the intersection, allowing for free unintimidated pedestrian movement. The second strategy was to reduce the scale of Apalachee Parkway by breaking it into two one way streets creating a block green spaces, small retail and outdoor cafĂŠs between them.


studio work Taking advantage of the terrain the surface parking lots were replaced with two levels of underground parking and series of Mixed Use infill buildings proposed above them. Pedestrian movement was promoted with a network of pedestrianized streets and paths that connected directly with adjoining communities. In acknowledging the significance of the intersection and the fact that Apalachee Parkway connects from the US 27 highway which runs from the southern tip of Florida and leads directly to the State Capitol Building; an observation tower was proposed as the centrepiece of the development, acting as a landmark of providing views of the capitol in its context.

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University - Urban Design Project The Market District: Tallahassee The Market District project was a team effort with 3 other colleagues from the M.Arch. program. It focused on unifying a predominantly commercial area that was divided by a major 7 lane thoroughfare (Thomasville road), a series of large surface parking lots, and pockets of undeveloped open lots. With the perimeter of district being lined with residential communities one major strategy was to take advantage of the undeveloped open lots and create a network of parks and green spaces connected by a continuous jogging / walking trails that looped the district. Walking was promoted by lining these trails and sidewalks with trees for shading, enhancing the pedestrian experience.


studio work The second strategy was to introduce mixed used infill buildings along the edges of the surface parking lots which created a series of nodes and defined the urban streets edge. The key was to introduce residential units at the core of the district to make it more balanced and sustainable. The enclosed nodes ere developed as a series of mixed used: Parking / market pavilions to support occasional pop-up markets. These areas were distinguished with the use of lightweight tensile canopies which acted as shading for the when its either used as a parking or as a pop up market.

University of Technology, Jamaica - Fourth Year Project Configuration: Container Architecture: Student Facilities The objective of the project was to create a student union facility using a suitable configuration of recycled shipping containers. The project was not site specific. I assumed the site to be at an intersection of 2 major pathways within an university. I used a tree as my concept to create a natural “place�. I decided to utilize the shipping containers to this maximum potential and suspend them from cables creating a usable space below them.


studio work One major challenge in recycling shipping containers is to make them resistant to heat gain and suitable habitation . With this in mind I placed a layer of aluminium sheeting above the containers leaving an air space. This would assist with reflecting the suns rays before it made contact with the container. The air space would also assist by allow wind to pass through dispersing any heat that may go through the upper layer. The exterior walls of the containers will also be treated with spray on insulation foam finish.

University of Technology, Jamaica - Fourth Year Project Sports & Wellness Facilities The Fitness and Wellness Center project, focused on the clients requisite to have an energy efficient building that satisfies the needs of its occupants. With this in mind I attempted to fully incorporate the use of sustainable attributes in the design. By capturing the sunlight from the north and using an overlapping roof design to diffuse the light, I was able to maximize on the natural lighting in the building. The roof design also took into consideration cross ventilation, allowing the southwest wind to move through and cool the building.


studio work Various architectural elements are incorporated within the scheme to prevent the effects of negative solar heat gain. The east and west elevations were treated with north facing shading devices, to minimize the heat from the morning and evening sun. A number of rooms were equipped with high level windows and spaces to allow the rising heat to escape. Water features were used, not only as aesthetic elements, but function as a means of cooling the winds crossing through the spaces.

University of Technology, Jamaica - Third Year Project Port Royal Housing Development This project required me to explore and create a comfortable and efficient housing configuration. With the site being located in the historic town of Port Royal context became very important. Also with the site being in very close proximity to the sea the choice of suitable building materials became very important. The materials used were timber and concrete. In configuring each housing unit it was my aim to minimise circulation and make the unit as compact as possible with out compromising comfort. The lower floor has an open plan and the stair case is centrally located to minimise corridor space on the upper floor.


studio work With the upper floors not being an open plan, I created an interlocking dormer system at the ridge of the roof to maximise cross ventilation for both bedrooms. Another challenge that the site presented was that it was sloped inland away from the sea. This made it susceptible to flooding in the event of a storm surge. With this in mind I decided to to raise the 2 units at the back of the site and place them on concrete piles. The units at the back are slightly higher than the ones at the front to achieve its fair share of “sea breeze�. The central public space between the units is a raised timber deck around a centrally located tree.

University of Technology, Jamaica - Fourth Year Project In the Manner of - Light Table The aim of this project was to study an architect and analyze their key design principles and create and object in the essence of the architect. I chose to study Louis Kahn and his project the Salk Institute. With the main feature of this project being the manipulation of light I decided to create a light table / tracing table to represent Kahn's ideas. The table is designed around the principle of reflection of light, using a curved aluminium surface to reflect more evenly light from a single source thus enhancing its energy efficiency . The materials used are left unfinished in its natural form with great attention paid to details to fully represent Kahn’s ideas.

University of Technology, Jamaica - Fourth Year Project Object Lamp The objective of this project was to create a lamp using an assigned shape, a Tetrahedron. A unique property of a tetrahedron which I played upon was its ability to be stacked in a series to form a larger tetrahedron. The Primary materials used were bamboo, hemp cord & paper. Each tetrahedron has its own light source and the electrical wires were hidden with hemp cord which was used to wrap the main supports.

Harold Morrison & Robert Woodstock and Associates Meadowbrook High School Study Gazebo This project was a first prize winner for an internal design competition while working at Harold Morrison & Robert Woodstock Associates. The objective was to create a modern low budget study pavilion/Gazebo that would be located at various points throughout the high school campus. The concept I used for this gazebo is centred around the plaid fabric that is used for the schools uniform which was the official tartan of the Blackwatch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland.


professional work I pulled from the fabric the grid system used for the roof. The gazebo has 2 simple roof systems. The upper roof is solid, made of aluminium and protects against rain. The lower roof extents outwards, is semisolid , made of canvas & aluminium and protects against the sun. the roofs are supported by 4 steel columns. The outer ends are supported by steel cables. Around the 4 columns there are work benches made of perforated aluminium sheeting. The entire gazebo sits on a concrete pad foundation.

Harold Morrison & Robert Woodstock and Associates Basic Medical Sciences Complex. UWI Mona, Jamaica Basic Medical Sciences Complex is a 6 storey modern teaching facility, which was designed using a number of energy efficient features. Being a part of a team from schematic stages to construction, I was able to gain a lot of in the field and contractual experience. My main function for this particular project was 3d modeling and a comprehensive and highly detailed 3d model of facility was built from which a number of external views were done to show the finished product and also to assist with illustrating any proposed changes that came up and design decisions.


professional work Views on the various spaces in the building were used to not only show the client the finished product but also to help the team to see their design spaces and properly convey the ideas to the building Contractors. I also incorporated building service information within the model to highlight potential conflicts with the structures.

UWI Mona, Jamaica With most of my projects during my studio years having a focus on sustainability I was assigned the task of detailing the sunscreens for the building. Using the comprehensive 3d Model, Numerous sun studies were done to achieve the most efficient configuration for the most effective shading.


professional work I also worked on number of other details throughout the building one of which is a glazing detail done for the atrium space. The Concept of the glazing is that the glass is frameless and is suspended and the divisions are negative spaces relate the horizontal window divisions on each floor level.

I worked very closely with principal of the firm to make design decisions during the schematic design phase and produced rendered images after the design development stage.

Atelier-Vidal Limited Ken Jones Aerodrome Concept, Port Antonio, Jamaica With this protect I was assigned the task of using a Toroid as the shape of the building. The concept was that the toroid would form the outer shell of the building to achieve the “building within a building� effect. The outer skin will be made with horizontal timber screens to maximise shading without hindering visibility. The facility will have 3 main buildings with each being progressively smaller than the other, the largest serving as a single airplane hangar, the intermediate being an aviation training center and the smallest the terminal building.

Atelier-Vidal Limited Trident Hotel Gym, Port Antonio, Jamaica The Trident Hotel project was primarily renovation project however a number of new buildings were to be constructed one of which being the gym and spa building. On this project I worked closely with chief designer, to design in detail and produce construction documents for the building. I monitored the construction of the building on daily basis from start to finish answering any queries the contractor may have and resolving issues as they came up.

Atelier-Vidal Limited Trident Hotel, Port Antonio, Jamaica With this project being renovation project the main focus was on redesign of interior spaces. I worked closely with the team to design and produce 3d models, Renderings and animations for the interior spaces. The images produced were used for marketing purposes for the hotel.

Meadowbrook High School – Multi-Function Building Concept The client required a multi function building with facilities such as; a gym, A/V Room, Staff facilities, nurses station and computer lab. The challenge was also to use the typical column and beam construction method which is most affordable while making the building stand out from the traditional buildings around it. A number of sustainable elements were used. The class room were located on the upper floor to allow for north facing light monitors to produce natural lighting.

Chin’s Residence – Building Concept Coming up with the concept for this building had its challenges. The site is very steep. So the ideal solution was to have small building foot print and have a staked building. The building was broken up into 3 zones; service, public and private. The service zone was located on the lower floor and the public zone located on the intermediate zone and the private zone on the upper floor. Maximising views was also of high priority. The public and private spaces had huge folding doors that could fold away making the internal space an external space.
