Music Notes

Daniel Pinkham’s set of variations on the hymn tune Slane was composed in 1998. Pinkham (1923 – 2006) was a distinguished American composer, conductor, organist, and musicologist. He was professor of musicology at New England Conservatory of Music and served as Music Director at the historic King’s Chapel, Boston, from 1958 – 2000. He’s Got the Whole World in His Hand was arranged by Margaret Bonds, a barrier breaking African American composer, pianist, arranger, and teacher. This celebrated setting has been recorded by many artists, including Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price, and Kathleen Battle. The setting of Psalm 121 was composed by Dianna Robin Dennis (b. 1954), an American composer and writer currently living in Ireland. The postlude Fugue in C Major is a joyful work by the composer who perhaps most strongly influenced J. S. Bach.
