Mediations, was an international design event and exhibition hosted by the TRADERS design agency, held in the Royal College of Art, London. The event included three days of talks, presentations, group sessions, interactive exhibitions and key-note speeches. I was the head of all visual content for the conference and curator of the exhibition. Responsibilities of my role included the graphic design of print media-posters, flyers, exhibition programmes, paper proceedings, exhibition brochures and digital media- GIFS, handles, logos etc.

Brief: Salt Water Factory Project aim: To address the nitrate contamination and flood risk to existing infrastructure in Anglesey, North Wales, whilst providing economic growth through a water strategy master plan and sustainable, interactive sea salt factory. Project involved working from scale 1:10, 000 to 1:10, designing the engineering to extract the salt water and the factory process within the building.

Hand drawing is an essential tool in my process of project development. Technically, my fine art skills stretch from wood block printing to painting and drawing. However, the act of creative thinking and intuition also finds its way into my digital work.

This is part of my final March design thesis. Greatly influenced by the work of Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli, I was exploring how illustration can be used to communicate an architectural experience. The light boxes depict a person’s two-minuet journey through my architectural project. A narrated script accompanies each scene. The sequence starts from below ground and works its way up in scale. The light boxes display a snap shot in time capturing a sense of emotion of the speculative user.

Pictured above is a collection of storyboard cutouts that I designed to develop the narrative of my final MA project, ‘Welcome to Tech City’. The illustrated drawings are the first in a series of process narratives that were used to drive the architecture of key moments and communicate the design in a compelling manner.

Working alongside Torange Khonsari and Andreas Lang in a unit titled “Architecture and Activism mu work involved exploring ways in which architects can intervene in the field of politics and critically engage with the contemporary urban conditions. In a bid to hand power back to the residents, I worked closely with residents in the Carpenters estate to find ways to possibly reverse the process of eviction from the site. My proposal was to teach residents planning laws and the ways they can maintain possession of their home, in a fun, edcuational way. Through creating a computer game based on the carpenters estate, I was able to teach residents the bartering tricks needed to begin negotiation with the council, secondly, the game acted as a trigger to spark dialogue among residents. The computer game displayed the occupied and unoccupied homes on the estate and allowed residents to choose their potential neighbours, and use the incoming money to build extensions to their homes and add civic pieces of architecture. In the game, architecture modules are decorated as monsters to provide a fun language and visually communicate how certain typologies fit together.

SCENE FROM MONSTERS LAND GAME As players build extensions to their homes they begin to create their own monster characters. The monsters not only serve the purpose of communicating what architectural components fit together, by manipulating the expression of the designed monster, they also provide the opportunity to personalise one’s extension and start a visual dialouge with other residents.

Carpenters Estate, London 4h Year Masters Solo Project 01-04 2015
Above are rendered images depicted how the estate may look once the extension architecture appear s on the estate in real life. Through providing knowledge of the design process and the tools to build and inhabit a vir tual design, residents begin to take on the role of the ‘architect’. Once a design is uploaded in the game a planning application is submitted to Newham council. During the next level residents involved in the design scheme and Newham council member s meet at a for um to decide if/how the scheme progresses. By engaging individuals, citizens, and institutions, this project explores how architects redefine activism as an urban practice. I have learned from the tension caused by positioning myself between pragmatic negotiations and radical social demands.

WELCOME TO TECH CITY Pt 2 Train Station Expo Final Masters Solo Project 02-06 2016
Buried throughout Old Street roundabout, the scheme is set up as an experiential treasure hunt for commuters entering ‘tech city’. This project is about movement and the activation of spaces, designing a journey that can last two minuets or two hours depending upon your curiosity or time schedule. A series of haptic playgrounds, recharge gardens and interactive corridors are used to direct people through the site, and initiate a stimulating experience between the body, nature and technology. Over the past decade Old Street has become renown for its high concentration of tech start up firms, and consequently, is being sold as ‘tech city’. Currently, there is a £25 million
regeneration project to redevelop the Old Street roundabout and market it as ‘silicon roundabout’; Europe’s answer to silicon valley. However, the proposal doesn’t truly represent the wider demographics of Old Street, or the interesting dynamics of the companies around it.
residents, to understand what the different needs for users of tech city might be. By approaching the procession through the site as an intimate walk through a landscape, it is the projects aim to reclaim the site away from the silicon roundabout label as it is currently being marketed.
As a demographic, Old Street provides a really rich melting pot of users, beyond whom are currently being catered for in the proposed old Street redevelopment programme. My project research involved interviewing members of the National Centre for Circus Arts, speaking to visually impaired users of the Moorfields’ Eye Hospital and spending time with local

Brief: Sustainable Housing In response to the government’s emphasis on sustainable development and its prediction of imminent housing shortage, the projects aim was to challenge accepted definitions of environmental sustainability, to create new housing typologies at both a macro and micro scale in Cardiff centre. The project began at studying ecological precedents, using biomimicry to create a sustainable housing solution.

The ecological precedent for the housing project-Tafoni. Tafoni is a honeycomb-weathering pattern found in granular rock in arid or wet climates. It is thought to be a result of salt weathering, due to water bringing dissolved minerals to the rock surface and dr ying. Cr ystals are formed which force small particles of the rock to f lake off, exposing the harder surface layer. We encorporated the idea of eroding through creating cones of v ision within the building to open up to v istas. cardiff, Wales

This is a personal project that I undertook to learn how to operate a robotic arm. Dissatisfied with using the arm for traditional purposes, I began to draw with my new friend. By attaching an ink marker to the drill bit, the arm can be manually operated with joy stick control to act as a third drawing hand.

As part of the ‘transition’ phase between two related projects on the Carpenters Estate, I partnered with a friend to design a portable radio tower to bring back pirate radio to the site. The tower can be deployed within two seconds, making for a quick get away, and when turned horizontal, is cleverly disguised as a table.
