KHEEATEE DEVI MATABADUL DITIGAL SKETCHBOOK - FPI - YEAR 2 - JUNE MAGAZINE - GROUP 4 Monday 21st September

Today was the first day back at university and also the unit briefing for the new project. We also got put into groups and in my group I am working with

Editor : Anna Nguyen

Art Director : Beth McGlinchey

Fashion Editor : Christina Hadjikyriacou

Fashion Editor : Sabrina Saranna

Photographer : Olivia Winstanley

And I am a photographer as part of the team.

We had out group discussions and we all went through our summer project. The magazines I researched were Grey , Interview , GentleWoman and SSAW. We all really liked grey magazine and some of the topics in that magazine . We spoke about the topics such as how food in that magazine was really rare to have because out of all the magazine we all researched that was the only magazine that had food in there. We all started talking about horoscopes as I have a very high interest in that and in relation to our magazine topic we thought we should include something to do with that because that is something everyone may be interested in and I feel like the first group tutorial as a team was to get to know each other and see what we all have in common and I feel like that was definitely the strike for us as a group. We also spoke about wanting our magazine to be very art and creative , fun , playful based. We spoke about the photography side and how we can be unique and creative with our images so I thought about the Kim Kardashian Interview #ME magazine issue how it was taken so naturally on an iPhone and we all really liked that concept of photography as we are aiming our magazine to be very original. Beth and Olivia really liked the idea of including a wreck it journal where as they don't want it just to be a magazine you can read but also something you can physical do to keep.Today we was not sure about anything and we don't have a clue of what we want our magazine to be about or who it’s going to be about or aimed out. Se we have decided to research into more magazines, especially the ones which we individual looked at.

that 500 words 25th September - Lecture : Fashion Magazine art direction and layout

Studio Thomson is a creative graphic design company that have worked for many brands such as Preen eyewear 2015 (which
was my favourite!), Astraea Paris , and recently they have art directed COS AW15 which I absolutely loved! Collage repetition / illusional geometric shapes

2015 Preen Eyewear campaign

photographer : Dan Smith

Their main inspiration for this campaign were from the study of computer glitches and so that gave them the idea to cut and overlay images on top of

each other which I think created a very nice composition between the blocks of colours and images.

I absolutely love the whole composition on this page. The contrast between the back and white and red along with the sense of repetition looks ascetically pleasing. The words wrapped around the hands also gives a very nice effect.

Art Directors Alexey Brodovitch - Harper’s Bazaar 1934 - 1958

Alexey Brodovitch is a Russian Photographer who is mainly famous for he’s art direction for Harpers Magazine 1934-1958. It all started off in 1934 when Alexy Brodovitch work was exhibited at the Art Directors Club of New York exhibition and Carmel Snow who is the editor of Bazaar attended the event. Snow loved his work as she described pages that bled beautifully, cropped photographs, typography and design that were bold and arresting.”After seeing his work she then immediately offered Brodovitch a job as Bazaar's art director.

28th September : group meeting In this meeting we was just discussing which magazines we like and what we don't like about them just so we can get a sense of what we all like. We looked at magazines and brainstormed about what kind of layout, photography, style, we all like.

- Noon Magazine which is an art magazine and we all liked how it was paged by letters and not numbers. Anna really liked the article based on falling in love which was just a plain double page with an email conversation on it as as you read it , it starts of strictly about work ( profession ) and then the messages then turns into flirting and they end up really liking each other. we all liked this as it was a different, arty and natural way to express it and also it is very interesting to read. After this we then thought about our content to be interviews with different creatives.

- Hello Mr is a gay mens magazine.

- Hope Street Magazine ( humorous , playful ) - Issue 3

- A Magazine , We loved the gold border edges and loved the golden ticket page ( thought about layout and style)

- Beth and Olivia really liked the idea of including “wreck this journal” as part of the magazine because they want it to be a more hands on / physical thing to do in the magazine.

- We spoke about what size we want our magazine and will probably want it to be around A5 as it will be easier to put in your bag and carry around rather than a big thick magazine as most of them are.

- Photography : Sabrina likes to do more location shoots and I like doing more studio shoots so its good in a way that we are different which means that we can come up with different sceneries to shoot and come up with different ideas and collaborate them.

- Fake Adverts ( funny , humorous )

- Horoscope shoot, Gel Lights , Jewellery / birth stone ( idea)

- Stockist , buying - Online? , School term? , bi annual? what about price ? £10 or under as its for students?

Wednesday 30th September - group meeting Questionnaire - Market research : The purpose of us making a questionnaire is as our magazine is aimed at students we wanted to find out what their interests are and where they would buy it and what age range they are etc. This would help us make our magazine to be more aimed at students.

What topics? :

- music , upcoming artist , new talent

- travel

- fashions - H&M , zara, missguided , asos , pull& bear , upcoming young art designers

- price range £5-£6

I have made our questionnaire into and online survey on survey monkey and have sent it to many people such as Students.I think its easier to do an online survey because loads of people use the internet and the results are easily gathered by charts , data and graphs.

Discussing the Media pack : Editorial policy : by students for students, We showcase platform students on creative courses, Playful , fun , interactive.

-The aim of our magazine is to support young creative students

Readership : 18-25 year olds , students on creative courses. Interest outside of courses but within creative field.

-our readership is aimed at both genders male and female and is attracted to young creative art students aged 18-25

Competitors : Our competitors are Pigeons and peacocks , creative review , please! , vice , hope street

Funding : Adverts / Sponsors, sale of magazine , coupons, collar with unidays

Visual Identity : Creative sketchbook feel, colourful, collage , different pages / textured , not polished , minimalistic

We have only spoken about the size of the magazine which will be size A5 as it is aimed for students / young creatives it will be easier for them to carry and put in their bags.

Fashion Direction : Fairly satirical , embracing unique talents , customs / one offs , not from high street.

- The magazine will be very humour, playful , laid back based.

Content: Fashion , film , art , music, editorials ,quizzes , drinking games , horoscope , interactivity , interviews.

Potentials stockists : Universities , newsagents , order online , galleries , museums , shops

Mood board research / Individual work: We all discussed about how we want our images to look like. We all liked the idea of the studio based images including gel lights , collages ( we all liked the idea of preen eye wear concept images ). One of our stories / topic we may include in our magazine is a horoscope issue, and possibly accessories - So I will look into research of some inspiration and photographers from what we have discuses of what we like.

Photographers / Artists I researched : Photographer : Julia Kumenko - Uses a lot of creative features such as gel lights and motion blur.

Preen eyewear - Studio Thompson

British Vogue - Horoscope issue

Thomas Couderc - french team helmo

The image below is the mood board I made , showing all aspects of the photographers / artists I have looked at. The aim of this was for use to get an idea of what out magazine stories may be about / look like. I also included everything we all discussed as a group what we all like in the mood board.

Daiane conterato Harpers Bazaat Ben Hassett

Photographer : Julia Kumenko - Uses a lot of creative features such as gel lights and motion blur.

horoscope inspired / gem Preen eyewear Studio Thompson

Ola-Rudnicka - Dior- jewellery shoot

Thomas Couderc - french team helmo

- I specifically chose these images as they relate to the horoscope idea we had. Our initial idea was express horoscope but with accessories , I thought that we could use the birth gem stones to express each 12 zodiac sign. When researching I saw this image and I thought it is a great way of overlapping the zodiac representation eg- leo : lion , cancer: crab etc. over an image of a person. I liked this idea as it reminds me of gel lights with the bright neon colours and also a strong way to present and show relation of two elements.

- From market research questions we all decided to do our own one individually. My questionnaire was handed out by survey monkey. 7 people filled out the survey and from the results. We discussed this on the 30th September and when we met again on the 3rd October ( so we had the whole weekend to do the survey ), we gathered all the results and put it into a graph / pie chart.

- Just too recap that the reason we done a survey was where our magazine is aimed at students we wanted to find out what their interests are and where they would buy it and what age range they are etc. This would help us make our magazine to be more aimed at students.

Friday 2nd October Today we discussed the final media pack and showed our questionnaire answers and presented this to Dal and Katy.

Monday 12th October - group tutorial notes Our magazine will be about creative people ( students ). So the audience will oblivious to the fact it is about uca / graduates until they open it up. Our 3 fashion editorials will also include Uca creative students and this also involves all Luca students from dierent campuses. The aim of this magazine is to inspire young / creative audience. Also it is to promote uca students work. we have spoken about our editorials and we all want one of our editorials to be an accessories shoot but want it to be a colourful and playful. this might fit in with our horoscope idea that we spoke about in our first meeting. This idea came from the horoscope stones and beth wanted to do an accessories shoot from before , so it blends in very well. Our potential stockist will be sold at newsagent for around £5. ( Pigeons and peacocks and one granary are around that price and a very similar magazine to ours as is it about interviews / students also our competitor ). It might also be free for uni students. We also thought of making the magazine biannual but after meeting with katy , she suggested that our magazine should be annual and could also be the name of the magazine as we don't have one yet.

Monday 26th October : Market research in shore ditch

We went down to shore ditch to see where we would potentially sell our magazine. We went to shore ditch because it is a very arty, creative place and it fits in with our magazine concept. From todays trip we aimed to see how magazines are promoted in stores and which magazines they are such as , we visited it Blitz and they give free copies of vice and law magazine. We visited box park which are cool mini stores which we all really liked. the one we all really liked was The gift box store. The kind of art and scenery fitted in really well with our magazine concept and had thoughts on promoting our magazine there. we was thinking of handing out our questionnaires in shore ditch but it was to late by the time we remembered. After a long day in shore ditch we went to eat burritos! yum!

Blitz store in Shore ditch - Promoting free magazines such as vice and law magazine.

The gift box - Box park

This store related so much to our magazine theme as this store was filled with many , arty creative , humorous things. Anna asked for the shop owners contact details because we thought that if our magazine was to be promoted , this store would be one of them

After a long day down shore ditch , we decided to go and have a nice meal together , so we went to freebird burritos , yummy !

Wednesday october 28th - Brighton - Interview Jazmin Lee Today is our first interview and shoot as a team. We went down Brighton to interview Jazmin Lee pop up store. her work / clothes are all about celebrating and appreciating the plus sizes and loving your body the way it is. it was a very great , fun and inspirational interview. We got there by train as me and anna went down by car which was a twi hour drive and met beth, Olivia , Christina and Sabrina there. This was my first time visiting Brighton and i loved the atmosphere there. I was also the photographer of this shoot / interview.

Anna , olivia and beth interviewing Jazmin Lee

Overall today was great! I got amazing shots of her inside and inside her store. I also captured close up images of her store , such as the meaningful hashtags outside and the coee bar , clothing rack in her store. We also wanted to get a feel of the atmosphere of the store in the magazine.

Friday 30th October - Cabrini Roy studio shoot This shoot is designer Cabrini Roy , who done foundation at UCA. She makes her own clothes by hand , which is simple. with this shoot we decided to make it simple , yet minimalistic especially with the colours and the way the clothing looks. This shoot is studio based and Olivia took the images for this shoot. Me and Sabrina and Anna assisted with this shoot. Christina styled the clothes which she done a very good job on.

mood board by Olivia

2nd November - Group tutorial with katy - Notes - don't like 1 granary as the art direction is poor and bland. It doesn't have much of a personality but this makes our magazine have a personality.

- Need to do mood board for upcoming shoots.

- email Zandra Rhodes

- Need to do the t-shirt charity project.

Friday 6th November - Naomi - menswear shoot On the 4th November , they done a test shoot with gel lights , to see if it would fit in with the clothing. unfortunately , i wasn't able to come in on this day as i was feeling unwell. but my group informed me that the Gell lights didn't fit in so we had to come up with another idea. Christina came up with the idea of projection images on the clothing inspired by an adidas campaign. We all really liked the idea. In order to contribute my ideas i decided to make 2 mood board for inspiration of styling and direction of setting in towards the shoot. Olivia took the images for this shoot as me and sabrinna assisted

both mood boards where made by me.

all the sources of imagery came from pintrest and i was thinking about the lighting and positioning of the models as there was 3 models.

Olivia chose images of sport location images such as football pitches and smoke bombs. this gave a very nice eect to the image and clothing which was all happy with.

-7th November , we was meant to interview Annie Hertikora but she cancelled due to illness.

- 9th November , Sabrina , beth and Olivia went down to shore ditch to interview Nada - Volt mag. As we had a group tutorial that day , me , Christina and anna attended the group meeting with Katy.

we updated with katy where was was up to and how many shoots we have done. We discussed the upcoming shoot I was going to photograph which was designer and graduate - Lavina Cadar. She told me to look at stylist Agnes Lloydd. I also had to do a moodboard. My ideas around to shoot these clothes was to use gel lights as it fitted it in really well with the clothing.

- 10th November , Jo interview took place in her oďŹƒce

- 12th November, Sabrina shot Kirsty Sahota garments based around the University. model - lea , Mua - megan

13th November - Accessories shoot inspired by Zandra Rhodes We have all wanted to do an accessories shoot since the beginning. So we decided to do a zandra inspired shoot as her style is very flamboyant , colourful and especially pink.Beth and Sabrina bought sheets of card colour for the backdrop of our shoot. The colours for this shoot where mainly pastel colours. They also coloured some 3D Shapes to give the image a type of scenery. We used sabrina, megan and anna as hand models. Anna done the girls nails and I was the photographer for this shoot. We was very playful and experiential with this shoot.

16th - November - Lavina Cadar - Studio shoot based , photographed by me Lavina Cadars clothes are very geometrical and I feel like i can be very playful with the shapes in the clothing. We also got two models. One is Annas friend called Ruby and another model is my friend from uca farnham. We decided to use them because we wanted a mixture of different race of people in our magazine and they both have different amazing hair. we wanted to really get playful. I also looked into Agnes Lloyd which katy suggested me to look at which indeed helped me a lot in the shoot. She takes very unusual crops so when I was shooting I was doing the same which also fitted in really nicely with the garments.

This moodbaord was by Christina - for make up inspiration which we all loved !

- Beth done ruby and sheyans ( 2 models ) makeup , using strucual lines on the eyelids and we also decided to highlight the face as it will look more effective with the gel lights

Monday 16th November Lavinia Cadar Make up/ Hair Mood board

these images where taken before the shoot. I decided to take close up shots of the garments.

When photographing these images, I experimented around with the gel lights by this I mean I played around with the gel colours by overlapping them, For example I overlapped the red and blue to give a purple eect. The lighting reflected very nicely on the silver metallic fabric, which made the gel lights more eective in the image. When retouching the images, I just highlighted her features and I also uplifted the vibrance of colour. Stylist Agyness Lloyd inspired the shoot as her images where on crops.

When taking these images I tried to be very physical with the posing because the garments where very interesting , and i felt like moving around in the clothing will creative some really nice eects.

20th November - Seereta menswear shoot / Last shoot Today is our last shoot. This shoot was photographed by Olivia. This shoot involved low , dull lighting which came out very nicely in the images. When editing these images, we have discussed that we are going to flip, rotate , and use very reflective and symmetrical effects on it which came from sabrinas idea from the first moodpboard she made when we started.I’m excited about when editing because I can be playful with them.

From this date and onwards. We have had individuals roles and have been putting the magazine all together.

Beth was doing the layout design on indesign and informing us if we liked it or not in the group chat. I had a set of images to edit that we all picked out all together and i spent 2-3 days retouching , editing them . some final edited images by me ( all the final images in the magazine are retouched by me , these are just a few ) -

When editing images, I have been super playful with them which I have absolutely loved. With the kirsty shoot with the two images , I have made the features more noticeable by highlighting these and also making the shadows more prominent aswel. I have loved blending images to create a manipulative image that looks surreal.

When retouching the images I decided to create collages by being experimental with the shapes and I also added coloured borders, along with that if you look closely I duplicated and flipped the same image to double the border. I also used colour blocks to give a very geometric feel to the images. The inspiration towards the retouching was Preen eyewear. We liked how they used broken lines and colour blocks, which encouraged me, be experimental.

Friday 4th December - Last tutorial

- What did you individually learn?

- did you learn a lot in your own feilds?

- What would you change?

We would involve more editorials and collaborations, try to get a Zandra Rhodes interview, get a website , profile pics in the magazine should be taken by a photographer and not on their phones.

- Be inspirational about the magazine

- could also be given out on open days as it will inspire students.

Conclusion Overall , I have loved this unit! Im really happy with the people i have worked with. We all worked really well together and we all communicated very well. We made a whatsapp group and we have spoken and kept in contact with our ideas , every single day in the past 3 months of this project. I really liked how when we all had an idea we all contributed to it and made it part of this unit. I really liked all the shoots we done , I feel like every shoot was different and we didn't keep it all boring and the same. We have also met amazing graduates and students that we have collaborated in this unit which has been a wonderful experience. i feel like we have all formed a friendship as we have all been motivating and supporting each other.

In the photography role of this unit , I have improved my photoshopping skills and I also feel like I have turn very professional when shooting such as creating mood boards before shooting and also learnt to communicate different ideas. I have found out that working in a team can make everything so much more experiment as everyone thinks in a different way in which everyone comes up with different ideas and I love peoples input when it comes to shooting. I have also understood different roles such as the styling and being an editor role in the fashion industry.
