WELCOME TO OUR 2017–2018 SEASON As Boston Baroque heads into our 45th season, it feels fresher than ever. People have always remarked on how this ensemble creates every nuance in the music. This year will be no different, all while showcasing five internationally acclaimed singers making their Boston Baroque debuts. Our opera this season is Boston's period-instrument premiere of Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, featuring a cast headed by Metropolitan Opera stars Wendy Bryn Harmer as Leonore and William Burden as Florestan. To hear this great opera and these musicians in the intimate acoustic of Jordan Hall is an experience that you won't want to miss. Our Mozart program includes his moving Requiem, the Symphony No. 40, and Exsultate, jubilate with soprano Amanda Forsythe. Our recording of the Requiem two decades ago was called “a knockout” by Fanfare and was voted one of the three most important classical CDs of the year by CD Review. I look forward to revisiting this profound work. The real rarity in this series—a fascinating work that deserves to be better known—is Telemann’s St. Luke Passion of 1744 , a beautiful and touching work by Bach's famous contemporary. Soloists include Thomas Cooley as the Evangelist and audience favorite Andrew Garland as Jesus. There will be one performance only for this truly special event. And the holidays bring our popular and acclaimed Messiah, as well as festive New Year's concerts with champagne intermissions. I invite you to join us for an exhilarating season!

HANDEL’S MESSIAH Boston Baroque gave the period-instrument premiere of Handel’s oratorio in Boston in 1981, prompting The New York Times to later comment that this was a “Messiah that would have shocked our grandparents.” The tradition continues this year with soprano Ava Pine, Irish mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy (in her Boston Baroque debut), tenor Aaron Sheehan, and baritone Stephen Powell.
