BRALETTES

One of my favorite trends spotted in New York Fashion Week has been the bralette. Although they have been in the spotlight for the past few years bralettes have been revived with the help of the althleisure movement and more recently have become more high fashion as designers are dressing them up with layers or pairing them with skirts. B ralettes were originally created when less skilled fashion houses wanted to attempt designing bras but did not have all the knowledge to create as much structure. This inexperience led to the beautiful lightweight support we now love which has opened the fashion world up to using undergarments as further opportunity to layer and style. I personally love when bralettes peek under flannels or are .. . displayed underneath an open back shirt. . . Merchants definitely should take notice of bralettes as an important . piece of upcoming collections. They pair perfectly with any . . .. .. collection as a mid priced item that can create a lot of excitement . for other garments that pair well such as off the shoulder tops or . plunging necklines. Bralettes help consumers shop in the mindset . .. of looking for entire outfits rather than singular garments since . .. .. they are a dependent item by nature. . . The bralette is very versatile and can be marketed to anyone from a sporty girl who is looking for something similar to a sports bra style to a more high fashion girl who is looking for lacy texture to be added to their dressier layers. I personally will be shopping for more bralettes to mix up my wardrobe with new textures whether it’s underneath my fall flannels or layered under my spring crop tops.

PUFFED SLEEVES

Puffed sleeves have been a major trend for a lot of Spring 2017 lines especially during Paris Fashion Week. Flashbacks from the eighties might be coming to mind but stop before your mind starts wondering into shoulder pad territory. This seasons puffs are not so much about the shoulders and more about the lower sleeve. The more volume the better! T he popularity of the puffed sleeve has risen and fallen many times throughout the past centuries. Sometimes seen as ultra feminine and sometimes thought of as over the top. The puffed sleeve has undergone many facelifts and adaptations over the years but once again puffs are in. I think the drama of the volume can really make a look standout and its perfect paired with skinny jeans or tight pencil skirt. Merchants should pay attention to the puff sleeve especially for Spring/Summer 2017. 2017 Puff sleeves add an element of excitement to a top and can be the perfect piece to complete any basic outfit. Its great for both work and play or can be dressed up for an evening out. A puffed sleeve top is versatile and can be worn with almost anything. A puffed sleeve dress is fashionable, playful, and can easily be marketed to a variety of different demographics. . I love this super fun trend and how easily it can pull together an outfit. I cannot wait to add t depth and spunkiness into my own wardrobe by incorporating this new trend. Voluminous sleeves should no longer be kept at an arm’s length. Embrace the puff!

DECONSTRUCTED

Unfinished. Torn apart. Undone. Transparent. These are the first words that come to mind for me when looking at the recent trend of deconstructed tops. Although these shirts are made to look incomplete or destroyed I think they can transform any boring outfit into a high fashion look. I love the grunge feel of deconstruction. Deconstruction can make ma a bold statement. For many fashion designers it can be its own form of commentary on fashion’s inability to truly be able to create anything uniquely new. Fashion is borrowed from history, from designer to designer, but in a weird way concious creation of destruction is a very unique proess and is not able to be copied exactly. . . . .. . . . .. .. ..

..

I think that merchants should be interested in the growing trend of deconstruction. This trend is an easy way to mix up the basic pieces like button up shirts and make them an entirely new garment. Deconstruction is a brilliant way to keep consumers who are looking for a simple way to switch up their wardrobe interested. I think we start to see a lot of different items deconstructed but for now deconstructed shirts should be the focus.

. If you don’t want to pay money to switch up your wardrobe try .. taking scissors to an old garment and making a one of a kind deconstruction of your own. I am a fan of conceptual fashion and I am excited to see more and more deconstruction come to streetwear and athleisure. I think the more free we are in expressing ourselves the more fun we can have in fashion. Deconstruction has passed the barrier from a runway only trend to ready to wear garments and I’m so excited to see more clothing like this.

HOMESPUN KNITS

I’ve really enjoyed seeing homespun knitwear in many of the Spring 2017 shows. Knits seem to be a major trend in both men and womens collections and is being showcased as truly seasonless. The variety of textures and depth created in a knitwear garment makes this trend extremely visually pleasing. I especially like how knitwear is moving toward an imperfect look where string may be hanging or the garment may even look a little bit unravelled. Knitwear has been around for a very long time. Knitting started as a necessary skill in order to make Knitw clothing but now has become a hobby. The recent surge in popularity of knitwear is due to the demand for more casual and sportwear clothing. Although typically associated with cold weather knitwear is becoming seasonless especially because of the variety of fabrics used. Merchants should take notice of homespun knitwear because of its amazing versatility. Not only is knitwear trending it also happens to be extremely comfortable due to knits natural elasticity and softness. This will be a great selling point for many consumers. Homespun knitwear has already proved its worth since it has been around since the 14th century so it will not be going out of style anytime soon. . I am a fan of how knitwear is no longer restricted to just sweaters for winter but is also being seen as dresses, jackets, and even crop tops suitable for any season. As societies d gender constructs continue to be dissolved I think knitwear will be increasingly popular for menswear too. It is already being seen in many men’s shows and I love the garments. Knitted sweaters are no longer just for dads who aren’t in touch with the world, they’re now for everyone all year long. Now I just need to buy myself a loom so I can make some of my own knitwear creations!

MIDI CUFF

Statement earrings have been in the forefront of accessory trends for quite some time now. One of the new key players in the ear styling game is the midi cuff ring. Midi cuffs are placed on the center of the ear sometimes even over the tragus and offer new possibilities when it comes to stacking and mixing. Midi cuffs cu are a nice way to either break up an adorned ear (think ear jacket at the bottom and multiple piercings on top) or to simply bring a minimalist approach to ear decoration if chosen to be worn alone. Midi cuffs can vary from a simple ring to intricately designed stacks. They are also convenient because no piercing is necessary; they simply wrap around and can be bent to any ear shape imaginable. The possibilities with midi cuffs seem truly endless. . . Merchants would be smart to take notice of this rising trend in . statement jewelry. Midi cuffs encourage multi purchasing as they . . . . .. present great opportunity for mixing and matching. Customization . is another very marketable aspect of this trend. Consumers are . looking to have one of a kind pieces especially when it comes ... to jewelry and midi cuffs offer lots of variety in both placement and .. . mixing almost guaranteeing no two people will wear the same midi . cuff in the same exact way. . . Midi cuffs are a fun way to bring some subtle edginess to an outfit without the hassle or commitment that a real piercing would bring. It’s a perfect statement piece for any outfit, pairing well with both a look for an evening out or a simple white tee and jeans and anything in between. Midi cuffs will be a must have accessory in 2017 because of the instant glamour it can add to any look.

JUMPSUITS

In the case of the recent popularity of the jumpsuit, think less pilot from Top Gun and think more of a sleek one piece luxury garment. Jumpsuits are being seen in a few 2017 shows as a more elegant sequel to the previously trendy romper. E veryone from skiers to racecar drivers to parachuters wear jumpsuits for practical reasons such as warmth in high altitude or to minimize air resistance. The jumpsuit has a variety of different functionalities and I believe its current moment in the spotlight can be tied to the surge in interest of athleisure as both a trend and a lifestyle. Merchants should pay attention to the jumpsuit this next year not only because of its wide range of versatility but also because of the ease that accompanies the garment.Consumers will be intrigued by the idea of not having to coordinate an garment. entire outďŹ t but have a comfortable, stylish look by simply sliding on one piece of clothing. Not to mention how much this cuts down on hesistancy over if they have another garment to pair it with. Jumpsuits have become much more than a reference to the airforce; they are now being seen as sleek evening wear, blog worthy casual coffee shop outing wear, and even appropriate classy business wear. . C onvenience is meeting the fashion scene in a new way. It’s important to always be visualizing how garments can change from functional to fashion forward. Jumpsuits are one way that athleisure is once again bridging the gap and allowing a fast paced lifestyle to be both comfortable and still put together. I know I would enjoy throwing on a little black jumpsuit on the days that I’m waking up a little late for my responsibilities! The ultimate cover up for those lagging mornings.

HOLOGRAPH LIPS

Influenced by the rush of the 80’s and 90’s reappearance in fashion, a wonderful new beauty trend has popped up. Reminiscent of Lisa Frank posters and maybe a little influence from Candie’s extra shiny sneakers, a new way to sport the holographic rainbow is on your lips. Many makeup brands have started making lipglosses that can either be worn alone or layered over ma another color to create that multicolored finish. The idea is to make the lips look as though they have soaked in the light around and reflected a rainbow. A few specific glosses are Sigma Beauty’s Lip Switch, Bare Mineral’s Marvelous Moxie Iridescent Topcoat, Victoria Secret’s Beauty Rush Holographic Lipgloss . .. . . ... . .

. ..

Merchants should take notice of this trend as it continues to infiltrate the beauty scene. This lip trend can be paired with many . different looks and predicts a more fun and playful side of fashion to come. Because of the holographic lips roots in 90’s culture I l think a wider range of consumers will be interested than just young 20’s. Beauty is becoming more daring in general and many different generationas are already warming up to makeup that may have previously been seen as too “out there”.

I’m excited to see bold lip colors coming back into vogue. I will always enjoy a classic matte nude lip but there is nothing like a dramatic pop of color on the face to bring together an entire outfit. I imagine pairing some holographic lips with my mainly black colored wardrobe to perfect that pastel goth look: grunge with a soft side. However you decide to sport it the time has come for all that super fun makeup you got made fun of in middle school for wearing to actually be cool. So embrace a bit of your wild side and make it your own (venture to be as showy or subtle as you wish).

CREEPERS

Creeper shoes (sometimes called brothel creepers) are a style of shoe that has a thick sole. Originally most creepers were made of suede but recently they have been seen in any material imaginable. There is a long history behind creeper shoes but they are re-emerging recently in an exciting new way with many different styles and upgraded additions. A fter World War II British soldiers needed a break and therefore often hit the London nightclubs still wearing their crepe soled military issued shoes. Many of these soldiers listened to a specific type of music and wore similar very clean and fashion forward clothing. This began a subculture entitled Teddy Boys. Their shoes became known as “creepers” referring to a popular dance at the time that was performed to a song titled “The Creep” by Ken Mackintosh. In the 1970’s creepers emerged again and become very popular but quickly disappeared after that. However creepers are back again and this time they are a appealing to a much different crowd. Merchants should take notice of creepers as they begin to infiltrate streetwear, becoming the ultimate punk statement of upcoming seasons as far as footwear is concerned. Creepers are easily paired with a cute skater skirt or a simple pair of skinny jeans. They bring a quirky element to any outfit perfect for being a true statement piece. I love creepers myself. I bought a pair this past summer from Dolls Kill and wore them almost c everyday to my internship in New York City. I’m excited to see more and more of my favorite brands designing their own version of the creeper and modifying the style to match their aesthetic. Creepers are both the new party shoe and the new business shoe.
