Foreward As per the requirement for my fourth year Bachelor of Architecture degree at Aditya College of Architecture (ACA), Mumbai University, I decided to spend the part of the 8th-semester professional practice training in Thrissur, Kerala. My focus areas for the internship were following: - to get competencies and skills within the field of architecture; included form study, landscape designing, knowledge about materials and vegetation. - experience working for a company that contain several competencies, to get an insight in other professions as well as my own profession. I spend my internship at DD Architects in Thrissur for a period of 4 months. - to diversify my concepts of space and building. An internship in Kerala was unequivocally a bold change to the kind of exposure I have had. - to open up my vision and expand the range of thoughts. But most importantly it will make me a part of the process of inclusive, considerate planning. - to explore different cultures and travel.

STUDIO 9

Digital rendering of ranipuram hills by author.

Philosophy DD architects is a space for design which grows into a space for research in architecture and indigenous knowledge system. The studio likes to encourage architects, craftsmen and young creative minds to interact, share and develop creative expressions. Social technologies inspire it with a contemporary flavour that portrays its style and attitude towards design and architecture. Director’s Note Our firm, which started in 2002, has come a long way in a journey supported by many in numerous ways. Right from day one, specific principles and values have guided us in this endeavour, which we diligently try to adhere in our works. They include: • Encouraging local art and craft forms which in ways support local small enterprises which help in reviving /restoring many art & craft traditions. • Promotion of local materials. We think the root of being sustainable lies in the usage of local materials and thereby reducing the carbon footprint. • We try to do more of local projects, preferably within our district or in the ones nearby because we believe we recognise and understand our locality in the best way as compared to the places further away. Also, we must make regular site visits as we believe life to a project comes through these regular site interventions that we can do from our end. • The designs we do, the aesthetics we follow is derived from 20 years of our research into local traditions and from international works that have inspired us. Design is a serious business for us, and we would appreciate if the freedom is given to us, especially in the aesthetic front and not ask us to follow borrowed images for practice. We develop the style we follow through our research and experiences and hence cannot be specified.

IDEOLOGY 10

• We try to do any landscaping after understanding our indigenous landscapes and keeping them in mind. • Although we try to implement /complete projects within the prescribed time limits; the fundamental design process needs a minimum time frame to complete, which we indicate at the start of the project. • We believe beauty can be achieved with simple local materials and with the right complementary aesthetics. We believe in frugality, and our office is an example. Built using local materials and craftsmen. • A minimum of 30-45 days is taken for designing a regular residence, and we usually would not engage with clients who request for overnight designs and submissions. • We have done extensive research on passive cooling, Vasthushastra, local crafts and aesthetics. We feel it is essential to give back to the local community and students of architecture. Hence, we engage with them. • We need to look at each project with compassion and respect as well as to respect the earth and its constituents around us. It has been a journey full of exciting learning experiences.

Not just a vertical transition. (series by author)

Work Experience Here I learnt that the office is not just about designing space, but also about directing people, meeting deadlines, communicating with clients through video calls and having meetings at any time throughout the day. My main task was documentation of all previous and ongoing projects and collection of data. I got to learn the designing methodologies, construction techniques and also the representation of the drawings of Vinod Sir’s ideas by looking at all the projects he has done so far. Since the studio consists of a small workforce (with mainly two junior architects and the director) most of the work done is by the student interns, which makes the learning experience much more fruitful and enriching. We are giving opportunities for design development, working drawings, site visits, client meetings and conducting talks and heritage walks as well. In the four months that I worked at the firm, we conducted several heritage walks and discussions while also attending guest lectures and literature festivals throughout the state of Kerala.

WORK EXPERIENCE 11

Learnings from the office Known for an explorative and conceptual approach to architecture, The studio presents projects and ideas as unimaginable possibilities through very pragmatic constructs. As it was my first step into professional practice, this internship was a prodigious experience to observe a studio that introduces a new sense of invisible realisations into a somewhat predictable industry. The process and energy that we put into the work in the four months I spent there helped me widen my thought process and understanding of architecture. The studio’s progressive and often highly imaginative ideas shape a philosophical yet sensible and realistic approach to space and structure, of dwellings, installations and furniture.

My role in the firm I worked on the following : Ramanilayam Heritage Govenment Guest House Vanchikulam Nature Park Swaraj Round Thadathil House Sarath Residence Kala Sudarshan Residence Unniyatil Residence Office Website Saturday Screening events

DD ARCHITECTS

Thus the importance of the maidan is numerous in all fronts- Spiritual, Historical, Cultural

Enhancement of Walkway around Thekkinkad Maidan

and also as a green lung space of a city. Many town planners like Patrick Gedess have

spoken highly about the uniqueness of the town plan of Thrissur. Where the centre is at a height with the temple in the middle an open ground and the main road surrounding it, it resembles the human heart with blood vessels springing from it. This pattern brings every aspect of an ideal city together like spaces to stay, shop and relax. If we trace back the History of the maidan, a theory exists that Vadakkunnathan had Buddhist/Jain connections. It then became a prominent Shiva temple of the country and is a protected monument of the Archeological Survey of India. Later the maidan was connected to the legend of Sakthan Thampuran; the king who was considered as a father of modern Thrissur. We have had movements of the freedom struggle where leaders right from Gandhiji, Nehru and more recently, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi all have spoken from this maidan. Leaders from the state like EMS Namboothirippad and C Achuta Menon have delivered their speeches from here. Spiritual leaders like Swami Chinmayanada, Mata Amritanandamayee, Sree Sree Ravisankar have used the maidan for their discourses. Thus the importance of the maidan is tremendous, and it is the space where many important thoughts; ideologies are delivered to the public. Culturally its link is most importantly, the pooram festival (‘Pooraparambu’). Tourists from all over the world gather here to celebrate Pooram, a 36 hour day and night cultural extravaganza that has elephants, music, fireworks and most importantly lakhs of people.

Introduction

Pooram is a celebration of the Cultural genius of Kerala. The maidan has also hosted many cultural activities from time to time and in a way –it is significant in giving- Thrissur- the status of the ‘Cultural Capital of Kerala.’

Thekkinkad Maidan is the largest open ground in the centre of a town/city in India and possibly the world. It’s a unique example for an open space which is green; which has the famous Vadakkunnathan temple that dates back to antiquity and also culturally rich being the hosting ground of the Pooram festival.

In more recent times; Thrissur is developing rapidly in the commercial front. The population of the town is expanding quickly with large numbers of people from other parts of the state settling here. Thus the need for an urban space for relaxation /safe walkways is extreme.

DRAINAGE

The Concept is to create a safe, level pathway in the centre of the town, with eco-friendly lighting, which will add to the overall ambience of the town.

Existing Conditions

PROPOSAL

•Drains available along the inner side of the round

1. The walkway to be laid with rough Granite stones

2. The edge to the road, to be protected by a small barrier, for protection. 3. The edge between the walkway and the maidan to be beautified with stone

handrails.

4. The stone handrails to also act as a lighting element, where the lighting is inspired by the traditional temple lighting

5. Energy-efficient LED lights would be used, colour matching with the traditional

lamps 6. Solar Power to be used for lighting purposes.

7. Seatings to be provided at intervals, both facing the swaraj round and few facing the maidan

8. Waste bins to be provided along the walkway

9. The existing few merchants/flower sellers, hawkers etc should be provided with temporary facilities, but aesthetic ones.

Problems ●

Open drains

10. Floor light, street lights to be provided, as per the lighting requirement.

Blocked drains

11. The existing dead spaces, between the subway entries and the gap between the

Soil deposited in the drains

subway entry and the maidan to be aesthetically, artistically improved. 12. As the existing walkway is blocked at points, due to the subway, well near naikkanal etc, safe paths to be provided in these areas, so that a continuous pathway is affected.

13. Currently, there are many drains, slabs etc which are lying on the path and which makes it difficult to walk, so sufficient civil works to be done, so as to effect a safe,

old age-friendly smooth walkway.

14. The entry to the walkway and the exits to be clearly defined and the junctions to be

made safe and efficient

Residence (Landscape Drawing) Location: Pattikkad Client: Dr.Gibby Year: 2019-2020 Thodathil house at Pattikkad is designed, keeping in mind the abundant nature around, and the residence tries to weave into the landscape naturally. The materials used are mostly eco-friendly and close to the earth. We have also tried to integrate diverse craft-forms and techniques into the design. The house is placed along a walkway/driveway so that it allows sufficient distance from the highway and also gives space for landscape; an integral part of the design. The trees and hills behind along with the plants provide sufficient breeze, which was a design criterion to allow maximum ventilation through the house to allow passive cooling. Natural palettes such as exposed concrete, concrete flooring, terracotta blocks, oxide, coir-boards for interiors are used in the house. We have attempted to offer a peaceful space away from the bustle of the city.
