Global Names Zone GlobalNames Zone is intended to aid the retirement of WINS and is not a replacement of WINS since it does not support dynamic registration of records.   

 

Name records in the GlobalNames zone must be manually added, edited and deleted CNAME alias records are used to map hostnames to IP addresses To get GlobalNames Zone functionality for a given domain or forest, all authoritative DNS servers must be running Windows Server 2008 (beta 3 or higher). Dynamic updates in the GlobalNames zone are currently not supported. By default, an authoritative DNS server will use local zone data first to respond to a query, before trying the GlobalNames zone to see if the name exists. If there is no relevant data in the GlobalNames zone and resolution using suffixes fails, then, resolution will fail over to WINS. Note: it is possible to change this behavior using the DNS command line interface: o DnsCmd <Server> /Config /GlobalNamesQueryOrder <order> o For order, 0 means GLOBALNAMES ZONE is queried first, and 1 means local first.

Step-by-Step

Enable GlobalNames Zone Support The GlobalNames zone needs to be explicitly enabled before it will provide name resolution. This setting must be enabled on all DNS servers, including those not hosting the GlobalNames zone locally. Use the following command to enable GlobalNames zone support:  Dnscmd ServerName /config /Enableglobalnamessupport 1  Please note the ‘ss’ in Namessupport

Create the GlobalNames Zone

Â

GlobalNames zone can also be created from the command prompt using the following command:  Dnscmd ServerName /ZoneAdd GlobalNames /DsPrimary /DP /forest Once created, the GlobalNames zone will appear under the Forward Lookup Zones folder
