Kiama Jazz Club's Gatsby Supper Dance gives you your chance. The Pavilion will be transformed into a glamorous night club, speakeasy and dance floor with the fabulous big band sound of The Escalators (above) playing the hot dance music of the Roaring Twenties.

NBN finally arrives

If you haven’t discovered ABC Open yet, then I encourage you to have a look at it online. It’s an exciting initiative which gives Australian regional communities the ability to share their experiences through the ABC via websites, radio and TV. I recently attended a workshop to help people to submit video postcards from their area/lives (I’ll let you know when I finally finish mine!).

After all that anticipation, the NBN has finally been switched on in our area without much fanfare.

Now, Sean O'Brien, a producer from ABC Open Illawarra, is holding a free workshop for budding non-fiction writers to provide an overview of how to write a short story.

Your stories can then be uploaded to the 500 Words Project, which gives you the chance to share a window into your world, be it quirky, sad or heart-warming!

Now you have the choice as to whether to get it connected to your house or not. This service is free at the moment, but goodness knows what will happen after the election. If the Coalition gets in, they seem to be saying that they will not be connecting to people’s houses with fibre optic cable, as part of their plan to reduce the costs of the program.

Seems to me it could be wise in the long term to take up the fibre optic connection while it is available. Once our building is connected, we plan to introduce a wi-fi service for customers, as this seems to becoming the norm, especially in tourist areas.

Indian Night with a twist Our next Dinner Event will showcase food from an ethnic group you might not ever have heard of - the Parsi. The Parsi fled to India from Persia around the 8th century to escape religious persecution. Most settled on the west coast of India and adopted Indian food habits and culture, while retaining some food flavours and techniques from ancient Persia.

I only became aware of the culture because my gorgeous greatniece and nephews have a Parsi heritage (via their dad, Jimmy, of Masterchef fame). As seems to be the way, once I became aware of it, I seemed to see mentions of it everywhere, particularly in cookbooks on Indian food. Given the treasure house of Indian food, that respect says a great deal.

The annual Kiama Lifestyle, Business & Wedding Expo gives you an opportunity to find out about the wide variety of these businesses right on our doorstep. You can put a face to the advertising you’ve seen, and find out more about their products and services.

The expansion of the Expo this year to include weddings is an example in point. There are many businesses that work behind the scenes to make the big day a success from photographers and make-up artists, to event organisers and cake decorators. The Expo lets you browse around, sample product and make appointments.

There’ll be a fun run, children’s activities and interactive demonstrations on offer, as well as door prizes in excess of $1000. Once again we will be manning the Canteen to help you keep up your strength as you browse the stalls.

Lend a helping hand to refugees So much emphasis is put on the way refugees get here, but have you ever considered how hard it must be for them to settle into Australia once they have been given a new home here?

A wonderful band of people have found practical ways to make a real difference to the lives of refugees in the Illawarra. Strategic Community Assistance for Refugee Families (SCARF) is an organisation working towards seeing refugees happily settled and participating fully in the life of the wider community.

Volunteers are needed to tutor, mentor, supervise learner drivers, help kids with sport and generally offer friendship and a helping hand. I hope to get involved with SCARF’s catering initiative, launched at a great pop-up kitchen recently. We were treated to food from Ethiopia, Burma, Iran and Togo (see pic).

Noticeboard Help for new mums Having been involved with our niece’s twin boys this last year, I’ve had a refresher course on the trials, tribulations and joys of caring for a new baby (bit obsessive to mention them twice in one Bugle I know).

So I’m pleased to let you know we now have an expert baby health consultant in our midst.

Rachel Gregory-Wilson is a child and family health nurse with over 14 years’ experience.

She currently lectures at university in Infant Mental Health and Child and Family Health, and has just launched a private consultancy service for families in the local area.

Blossom-Inn is available for families who need support and advice on issues such as sleep and settling, feeding, growth and development and mothers experiencing post-natal depression.
