As regular readers of the Bugle will know, I’ve been part of a dedicated team working away to establish a farmers’ market in our region. And we did it!

If you haven’t made it down to the first or second Markets, I’m sure you’ll find a Wednesday afternoon that suits soon.

The beauty of having a weekly market is you can build it into your regular shopping routine. It’s already become the place to meet up with friends and shop in a social setting.

The Committee is working hard to increase the number of growers attending, and hence the variety of fruit and vegetables on offer. For a newly established market, we are blown away with the number of stallholders that have already committed to coming on a regular basis.

To thrive and grow, it needs your support. Come down and get yourselves some fresh, seasonal food each week.

At the moment the tomatoes are sensational!

Our stall has a mix of cakes, preserves, ready to eat and take home meals, muesli and more!

Ferraris pay a memorable visit

A recent visit to the Café by the Sydney Ferrari Club resulted high drama when one of the older cars slipped its handbrake and rolled down our steep hill.

Luckily, it negotiated the intersection without meeting another car and continued at pace along the road, and then the footpath(!), before careering into the Bloomfield’s garden. It was extremely lucky that no-one was injured.

Hilton finally has a Ferrari in his driveway… His wife Jan was in this part of the garden just an hour before.

Musical notes Intimate Piano Recital Get in quick if you would like to attend a private recital by Joseph O’Connor, who recently won First Prize at the National Jazz Awards. He will be playing a grand piano in a private home on Sunday 16 Feb from 2pm.

Folk by the Sea returns: performers wanted Great news that following the success of the first Folk by the Sea the event will be running again this September. So if you are a folk musician (it’s a pretty broad definition now days) and would like to be included in the line up apply online at www.folkbythesea.com.au by 30 March.

It’s on again. Forty-eight rugby teams are preparing to converge on Kiama for the 42nd Kiama Rugby Sevens competition.

The seven-a-side knock-out competition attracts teams from throughout Australia and overseas.

Pop down and see some great action.

Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival: Saturday Sidewalk Soiree Our traditional participation in the annual Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival continues this year, with the Nick Rheinberger Trio booked in to get your feet tapping.

Known and loved by many of you as ABC Illawarra’s morning presenter, Nick is just as busy as a musician. He and his trio promise us an acoustic cabaret with a unique spin on the Blues, using a variety of strings, from ukulele to Gandarvi.

Dinners take a rest

Flix in the Stix comes to the Gong For the first time, Wollongong has been included in the Flix in the Stix roadshow to nine regional areas.

Flix is a unique night out - including short film (this year curated by comedian Julia Morris), and live music and comedy. A big attraction is multi ARIA winning band Eskimo Joe.

We’ve been doing our monthly dinner events since the Café’s early days, so it is with regret that we’ve decided to finally call it a day.

Over the years we’ve paid homage to the great cuisines of the world, and visited Morocco, Spain, Cuba, Portugal, Malaysia, Vietnam, Mexico, Germany, England, Ireland, Hungary, various Italian and French regions, Brazil and Japan to name just a few.

With our new commitment to the Kiama Farmers’ Market, and our growing catering business, we don’t feel we can commit to a schedule of monthly dinners. Instead, we are thinking of doing some special events of some kind. Once we decide what they are, we will let you know!

Save the date Kiama Council will be having its annual function to mark International Womens’ Day on 6 March. Details will be available on the Council’s website.

Support a cure Our wonderful Ellie, who has worked at the Café for years, needs your support in her efforts to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation by shedding her locks in the World’s Greatest Shave.

See things through Peter’s eyes We’re pleased to have some of local photographer Peter Izzard’s stunning prints on sale at the Café. At just $35 they make a great present for someone (or treat for yourself).

A word for the coffee aficionados Ellie, who is the daughter of Sue and Jim Carney, vice principals at Kiama Public School, is studying nursing at Wollongong.

She is intending to hold a public ‘shaving’ with fundraising events on the weekend of 15 March, but the details have yet to be finalised. We’ll advertise it at the Café, and will be accepting donations on her behalf.

For those of you wondering about the lack of froth on your cappuccino at the moment, it’s a result of the protein levels dropping due to the condition of the pastures in the drought.

The local Pines Milk we use is processed to the bare minimum required, rather than manufactured to a formula. We like it that way, even if it’s hard to make a babycino out of!

Noticeboard Roz from the Salon on Tingira wants to let you know that she’s now regularly going to be working Monday to Friday, and the first Saturday of every month.

The other Ros will be working Thursday to Saturday.

Weekly trading hours are 9 til 5, and Saturdays are from 9 til 1. They are able to work earlier or later, by appointment.
