Beachside Bugle Brought to you monthly by Cathy and her team at your local cafe
Showing the world Kiama means Rugby Each year, due to the hard work of a few volunteers, little old Kiama gets to host the largest one day Rugby Sevens tournament in the world. This year is the biggest yet, with 48 men’s teams and eight women’s teams lined up to battle it out for $25,000 worth of prizes. There are teams from all the Sydney Shute Shield sides, as well as from PNG, the Philippines, Fiji, Tonga, NZ, Queensland and other Rugby-mad country NSW towns. There’s even a women's team from China. International interest has increased with the inclusion of Sevens in the next Olympics. There will be the traditional delivery of the winners’ trophies by Navy helicopter, a jumping castle for the kids and other entertainment. This year, spectators are encouraged to dress as superheroes, so brush off your cape and make an appearance. Steve and I will be helping out on the bar during the day, so come and say hello.
Details: Saturday, 23 February Kiama Showground, from 8:30 am, with the finals from 3pm. $10 entry, with under 16 free. Food and drinks available (no alcohol to be brought onto ground - licensed bar in operation)
Take a trip to Mexico with us Following the success of our Tapas Nights (we even got approval from some Spaniards), our focus now returns to our monthly Dinner Nights. The first night, we’ll take you to Mexico, to showcase the rich variety of this ancient cuisine. This won’t be a dumbed down version of Mexican food look forward to delicious taste sensations and textures. I’ve already bought some special chillis in preparation. The schedule of the dinners for the rest of the year will be in the March Bugle. Suggestions welcome! Details: Friday 15 February, 7pm Bookings essential t 4232 4990
Sour grapes over Wild Oats I realise it’s over a month since the Sydney to Hobart, but I can’t resist including these pictures, taken by Marshall Phillips, of the boats visiting Kiama on their way south. Of course, it was our luck to be out of town on that day… I was busy teaching my daughter a few survival tricks at the Boxing Day sales. Marshall, a keen sailor in his day, explains the rare circumstances that brought the leading boats so close to his place: “It is most unusual for the fleet to come near Kiama as where possible, i.e. with a ‘north easter’, it is better to go offshore where you might find a bit of helpful current. Even with a southerly, a tack in here is dangerous as the wind will (sooner or later) swing to the east and if that happens when you are near the coast the problem is getting around Beecroft Peninsular on the northern side of Jervis Bay. “So what we saw is not something that will happen often and the odds against Wild Oats more or less coming into our back yard again are remote.” Just my luck! Thanks Marshall.
Marshall took these great pictures at Marsden Point reserve (just down the end of the street from the Café)
From Cologne with love The Cologne Chamber Orchestra is returning to Kiama this year with a wonderful program of works by Vivaldi, Bach, Borne, Mozart and Paganini. The Orchestra is highly respected in the international classical music world, attracting the most talented young musicians from around Europe. Only the finest make the grade required to be a part of this unique chamber ensemble. Christ Church, the little white church on the hill overlooking Kiama Harbour, has featured some of the finest classical groups over the years, but a visit by the Cologne Chamber
Orchestra invariably raises the most interest amongst the classical music lovers. Details: Weds 13 Feb, 8pm, Christ Church. Adults $35, Pensioners $30, Students $25 Tickets available in advance from the Visitors Centre, t 4232 3322
Eevi gets the recognition she deserves Congratulations to Café regular and all round good sort Eevi Stein on winning the Australia Day Community Arts Award from Kiama Council. Eevi has been relentless in her efforts to promote the Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival and other Kiama Jazz Club events since becoming the Club’s Publicity & Marketing officer at least eight years.
Get rid of your e-waste safely (and for free) As part of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, Kiama Council is hosting a free e-waste drop off collection event later this month. Residents and small businesses can use this opportunity to dispose of their unwanted e-waste items such as televisions, computers, computer components and small appliances. Hopefully this will stop these items being dumped on roadsides, and allow the components to be recycled into something useful.
She is unfailingly cheerful, amazingly stylish, a self-confessed bon vivant and a wonderful ambassador for our town. Go girl!
Details: Friday 22 and Saturday 23 February Minnamurra Recycling Depot, 446 Riverside Drive, 9am – 3pm each day
Advance notice for jazz lovers
It is with regret I reveal my scones didn’t win a prize at the recent Kiama Show. Some of our regular boys’ club members witnessed the stress I put myself through, trying to get a plate of six perfect (or at least acceptable) scones together before the closAt least they taste good! ing time. They valiantly offered to eat my rejects (think Tower of Pisa), and gave great encouragement about my chance of winning. Never mind, there’s always next year…
Note for your calendars: the Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival is on Friday 8 March to Sunday 10 March. With over 50 free gigs at 20 venues, this year promises to be the best yet. Thanks for making us No 1! So thrilled to see we are now the top ranked eatery in Kiama according to leading online travel review site, Trip Advisor. We thought something must have happened, as more visitors are making the effort to find us. It is very encouraging for us to see our efforts are appreciated. Love yous all!
Another Orry Kelly? What is it about Kiama that spawns costume designers? First there was Orry Kelly, who traded Kiama for Hollywood in the Thirties and is still the Australian with Don’t go Millie! the most Oscars (his work included costumes for 42nd St, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Auntie Mame, Oklahoma!, and Some Like It Hot). Then there was Bob and Betty’s daughter, who was nominated for an AFI Award for costume design a year or so ago (as reported in the Bugle at the time). And now our very own Millie Tanner has just been accepted into the costume design course at the Victorian College of the Arts. The downside of this is she will soon be leaving us, but the upside is we now have someone to visit in Melbourne! Millie has been with us for three years, and has been a valued
member of our team. Her calmness under pressure, her ability to cope with the changes her parents’ accident brought upon her family, her creativity and enthusiasm, and her willingness to get involved in everything from the Surf Club to the Jazz Festival, makes me sure that we’ll see her on the Oscar stage at some time.
Shakespeare in the Gardens Take advantage of the opportunity to see one of the Bard’s comedies in an outdoor setting. The Eaton Gorge Theatre Company is presenting The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens on weekends in February. They’ve updated the costumes to a Mad Men look - very stylish Fifties - which will add to the fun. Bring a blanket or a chair, and your picnic basket. Details: Fri and Sat nights in February at 7pm and Sundays at 4pm. Adults $25, Concession $15 and Family of Five $60. Visit www.egtc.com.au or call 4267 4081
