Put 5 February in your diaries Yes, it is finally happening - Kiama is just a few weeks away from getting a weekly farmers’ market! The Market will be devoted solely to food, with stalls manned by growers and artisan producers. It is a welcome opportunity for us to get fresh food direct from its source and help make small scale food production a viable industry in our region.

As the only weekly farmers’ market between Sydney and Moruya, and given its idyllic location on Black Beach, there is much potential for Kiama Farmers’ Market to develop into a vibrant regional event. This is where you come in.

Our great logo was designed by talented and generous Beachside local and Café regular Gregor Cullen. Our eternal gratitude!

Tapas is the perfect food for a lazy summer evening. You can order as many small dishes to share as you like, to enjoy a wide range of flavours while relaxing with a wine or beer.

With the memory of last year’s quest to put up the perfect plate of scones still vivid (you have no idea how hard it is to produce six scones of identical height and colour), I’m prepared to try again this year. If I ever succeed, I’ll accept the prize in honour of my Auntie Lill, who was the best country cook ever. She always had tins of cake and biscuits on hand in case of visitors.

The displays in the Kiama Show Pavilion are described as the best on the South Coast, in recent years boasting approximately 2000 exhibits including: vegetables, fruit, jams, cooking, the NSW Rich Fruit Cake Competition, knitting, tapestry, crochet, sewing, patchwork, craft, art, floral displays, roses, homebrew, photography, porcelain and pottery, spinning and weaving, woodwork and the NSW Dahlia Championships.

Major car show on way The first South Coast Showdown is coming to town, expecting to attract thousands of car enthusiasts from around the country.

This major event will be open to a wide range of both cars and bikes - from street machines, kustoms, hot rods, lowriders, classics, minitrucks and all varieties of bikes. There will also be trade stalls, food and displays.

Roll up, roll up Are you are wondering what that gorgeous little ‘spiegelesque’ tent is doing in Hindmarsh Park?

It’s an initiative of the good people behind the Kiama International Sea Side Arts Festival (or KISS Arts as it is known) and will host a series of free workshops and events, exploring what the proposed Arts Centre would mean to the people and artists of Kiama.

The goings on at La Petite Grand are just one aspect of the three day festival, which includes street theatre, circus workshops for the kids and free open air caberet at the Sebel (10th and 11th) and the Jamberoo Pub (12th).

Celebrate Australia Day with Lyndey Milan Kiama’s 2014 Australia Day Ambassador is Lyndey Milan. A familiar face on television and in print, Lyndey been instrumental in changing the way Australians think and feel about food and wine for over thirty years.

This year’s initial festivities are centred at Surf Beach before the focus shifts to the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremonies at Hindmarsh Park. There will be food stalls, children’s activities and other events to mark the national day.

Celebrations are also planned in Kiama Downs, Jamberoo and Gerringong. It is a great day to attend a community event to show we recognise how fortunate we are to live in Australia.

Details: Ms Milan will be at Surf Beach in the morning, where she will make an address, before attending the Citizenship Ceremony which begins at 11am

Neighbourhood watch You might have noticed some activity in the shop at the end of our block, as one tenant moved out and another moved in.

Our new neighbour but one is Planet Footprint, a growing niche business that monitors the real benefit of energy saving measures for over 200 local government bodies in Australia and the United States.

They use their engineering, consulting and IT expertise to deliver a fully managed environmental scorekeeping service, so that organisations can monitor if their energy saving initiatives are working.

As you can imagine, NBN connectivity was a big attraction to business like this, which was previously based in Gerringong. However all of us are still waiting patiently for someone to make the final connection between the fibre optic lines in the street and the cables that have been installed around our building. Fingers crossed it happens soon.

Find out about our local fossils 270 million years ago the South Coast formed the muddy floor of the Gondwana coastline.

Black Head at Gerroa safeguards a rich resource of fossil records, and Seven Mile Beach National Park is offering you an opportunity to find out more about our ancient past.

Through its Every Rock Tells a Story program, a Discovery Ranger, geologist Phil Smart, will give you the skills to recognise fossils and appreciate geological features. Charity Antique Fair The Rotary Antique & Collectables Fair attracts local, Sydney and interstate dealers to showcase their wares.

A wide selection of furniture, jewellery, silver, china, textiles, books and many other interesting items will be on offer.

Valuations, other than for jewellery, are available throughout the weekend for $5/item.

The Gala Review Grand Opening is always a highlight of Kiama’s social calendar.

There is also a Unique & Classic Car Show on the Sunday, where gold coin donations are encouraged.
