See you at the Farmers’ Market over Christmas

Free entry to National Parks to mark 40th anniversary

With Christmas and New Year’s eves falling on Wednesdays this year, the Kiama Farmers’ Market has planned ahead and moved its markets in those weeks to the Tuesday. This will mean that fresh local produce will be available for Christmas and the holiday period, without adding to the usual holiday traffic chaos.

All NSW national parks are open for free on 15 and 16 November to mark the 40th anniversary the National Parks and Wildlife Act and the holding of the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney. The International Union for Conservation of Nature is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organisation and the week long Congress has attracted 4000 delegates from around the world - some of whom visited National Parks in our area prior to the Congress. Since 1967, when the National Parks and Wildlife Service was first established, NSW has grown its parks system from one per cent to nine per cent of the total state, or more than 7 million hectares. More parks have been announced in the lead up to the Congress. Take advantage of the celebration to reacquaint yourself with at least one of the beautiful national parks within an hour’s drive of here. While some, like Macquarie Pass National Park, have no entrance fee others usually charge a per vehicle amount to assist with upkeep: Budderoo National Park This 7,120ha park 5km west of Jamberoo is the home of Minnamurra Falls. Entry via Minnamurra Rainforest Centre is usually $11. Morton National Park Stretching behind Nowra and up to Fitzroy Falls. Usually $7 entry at Bundanoon and $3 at Fitzroy Falls. Royal National Park The Royal is the second oldest in the world, beaten only by Yellowstone in the US. Instead of driving through or by it, use the weekend to stop and enjoy one of its many walks or beaches. Usually $11 a car. Bungonia National Park and Conservation Area Next to Morton, with great camping, rock climbing and hiking. Usually $7 entry (more to camp).

Still Life

December’s Pics & Flicks is a movie that would never be seen at the major cinemas, even though it won Best Film and the Critics’ Prize at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival and other accolades. Still Life is a tender film about someone who cares for the lonely when they die. The performance of English actor Eddie Marsan has been highly praised. He plays John May, a council worker who has – for 22 years – been looking after the affairs of those who have died alone: people with no friends or family to decide what to do with possessions, body or memories. The November film is Charlie’s Country is on Fri 14 November. Details: Fri 5 Dec, 7.30 for 8pm Gerringong Town Hall, $10 at the door.

Land sell-offs: necessary or short-sighted?

Mayor Brian Petschler believes that protests being made about the possible sell-off of parcels of land in Gerringong are premature. “We are auditing the land we have throughout the Municipality to assess what is surplus to requirements,” he says, “But that process has a long way to go and there are a lot of options to consider.” If any parcels of land are recommended for sale, a formal process of consultation will have to be carried out because of the community land status afforded to reserves. However these reassurances aren’t enough for Alma MacPherson, one of the people organising petitions to help keep two of the areas she believes are being earmarked for

development: the reserve beside the Uniting Church on Fern St and the reserve behind the Gerringong Rural Fire Service Building (adjoining Jubilee Park). “The short term monetary gain to the Council by selling off these two parcels of land can in no way compensate for the loss of these green spaces, which are currently enjoyed and used by the community and its visitors,” she says. She fears the process is well underway, and that the community has to act now to derail the proposed development. She is keen to talk at a Public Access meeting once the development is listed in the papers for the following day’s Council Meeting. Mayor Petschler warns that if the Council doesn’t proceed with selling land that it holds that is surplus to requirements then its financial position will suffer. “We don’t have the income from long term land development that we’ve had in the past,” he says. “We have a substantial amount of land that just isn’t being used and is costing us money to keep. It makes sense to look into what should be sold.”

Kel Grey’s The Pines Gelato is about to get exposure on Chinese TV

Two local farms, The Pines on Saddleback and Schottlanders Wagyu at Rose Valley, recently had a visit from one of China’s most popular TV personalities, Steven Liu. A highly respected chef, he shot to fame as one of the three judges on Master Chef (China). He now hosts a show on the Travel Channel called Master is Coming, focusing on food trails when travelling in different countries. The visit is part of a national tourism campaign to ‘Bring the World to Dinner’, which has seen a number of influential TV presenters, magazine writers and bloggers travel to Australia to help spread the word about the quality of the food experience here. Jacqueline Weiley of Foodscape Tours worked with Destination NSW to show the visitor the best our region has to offer. They visited our local farms to see the provenance of the produce used by David Campbell at his Wharf Rd Restaurant in Nowra.

Tell the state planners what you think The Kiama community is being urged to take the opportunity to comment on the Draft Illawarra Regional Growth and Infrastructure Plan. “Residents need to understand that these planning proposals affect their ‘backyard’,” said Mayor Brian Petschler. “The proposed increase to the number of dwellings, the height of buildings and our southern boundary at Gerringong, are issues which will have an impact on our community. Council believes that the southern boundary of Gerringong has been agreed in the current Local Environmental Plan and is surprised to see it raised again. It is imperative that Kiama residents know about these proposed changes and voice their opinion while they have the chance.” The Department of Planning and Environment is holding a community forum in Kiama as a chance for people to ‘Have Their Say’ or you can complete a survey online. The Gerroa Environmental Protection Society (GEPS) is also holding two public meetings to outline their grave concerns about the Draft.

Recognition for going above and beyond Five Islands Secondary College Careers Adviser (and Kiama resident), Mark Nicholl, has been named as the 2014 NSW/ACT Careers Adviser of the Year. As the orchestrator of the Annual Illawarra Trades Show that is hosted by the College, Mark has helped thousands of students in this region make choices for their post school life. Mark was awarded with a cheque for $1000 which he generously donated back to the students of his College.

Living the dream

Many dream of travelling around Australia, but only the hardy decide to do it on a bike. Even less with a young family in tow. And probably only one family with the aim of foraging for their food along the way, and making the whole effort a performance art piece. A free talk has been organised, to give you a chance to meet this extraordinary family and hear of their adventures so far as they pass through Kiama. They are on their way home to Daylesford in Victoria, where they teach foraging and other accountable living skills. The family has cycled 7,300kms (and regrettably travelled another 2,800kms by car to keep to their time commitments). Details: Little Blowhole Café, Tues 18th Nov 6pm. Free entry

My Kiama Foxground is home to a plethora of wildlife, often unseen and hiding in the forest. When descending from the mountain one day, I came across this cute little echidna meandering across the road. He looked truly befuddled, as if suddenly thrust into the big wide world to fend for himself. Lacking any fear of humans, he was happily guided off the road. I've not seen him again since, but it's a timely reminder to slow down and watch out for our native spring babies. Erinna Ford, Foxground

Council lays fibre optic cable

Details: Weds 10 and Thurs 11 Dec, 9-5pm, Kiama Leagues Club. Contact Marilyn Jarrett 4237 5180 or marrajarrett@gmail.com

If you’ve been wondering what’s been happening with all of the deep holes being dug around town, you can rest easy - the Council is installing a network of fibre optic cables to connect all of their CBD buildings, including the community centre, the library, the Pavilion and, of course, the Administration Centre. Research established it would be much more effective to lay a private network then rent from another party. Tenders have been called for the installation of CCTV in the CBD area, and that service (and the proposed wifi) will also use the new network.

Sourdough store opens Flour Water Salt, which already has popular stores in Milton and Bowral, is all set to open its Kiama outlet in Shoalhaven St. “We have wanted to open in Kiama for a while,” says Kirsty Hilkemeijer (left), who owns the business with her husband Joost. “When we saw this site become available we knew it was perfect for us.” Flour Water Salt is an an off-shoot of Berry Sourdough Bakery, and will source its bread from the bakery there. Other items and meals will be made in-store. Manager Lisa Wisken (right) says the store will be trading from Tues to Sat from 8-4pm. In other Kiama CBD news, a Rip Curl outlet is being installed in the shop previously rented by Telstra and Mosstique’s closure will see a new pizza restaurant open in its place.

Helping Cambodian children

Sue and John Moore have been running a Kiamabased charity called Helping Cambodian Children Abroad for six years. They were inspired to help after a visit to Siem Reap and a subsequent short period as volunteer teachers. In the last six years they have raised much needed funds for the children in the poverty area around Siem Reap through pie drives, garage sales and markets stalls. All of the funds raised goes straight to the project, where they have supported a soup kitchen, and provided bikes, lights and educational material.

Just recently, they have built a school house in Siem Reap with three classrooms for the 100 students. It will be formally opened in February. The next fundraising event is a market with handmade Christmas gifts, soap and candles, face painting, collectables, jewellery, clothes, iridology and more. Donations of quality mechandise for the event are welcome. Details: 22 and 23 Nov, Kiama Masonic Hall. From 9-5 on Sat and 9-3 on Sun. www.hcca49.wix.com/ hccacharity

A little Ray of Giving 2014 Last year’s Little Ray of Giving Christmas giving tree drive was a huge success, collecting over 120 presents from the Gerringong community for children and families in need. This year, Ray White Gerringong and the Rotary Club of Gerringong Sunrise have joined forces again and are aiming to beat last year’s result. From 1 December you can donate to less fortunate families in our community by wrapping up a gift and placing the gift under the Christmas tree in Ray White Gerringong’s office. Indicate if the gift is for a boy or girl and their age and your gift will be delivered, thanks to the Rotary Club of Gerringong Sunrise, to a local family who will appreciate the lift at Christmas time. Railcorp has finally sold its land on the south-west corner of Bong Bong and Manning Streets, after a tender for its sale closed in May. The 5,488 square metre block of land is suitable for mixed-use/residential development. Andrew Hunter, of selling agent Chestertons, says that the details of the sale, including price and purchaser, are still confidential. He is not aware of what is planned for the site, but expects that a DA will be lodged shortly. The property has long been a prominent eyesore, and there will be great interest in what is proposed for the site.

Help Council get its messages across There is so much information competing for your attention nowadays, it is difficult for organisations to get their important messages across effectively. Kiama Council is examining the way it currently communicates with residents in an effort to improve its effectiveness in the future. “The process is to create improved channels of engagement, so the community can receive the information from Council in the form they want or need it,” says Andrew de Montemas, head of Council’s Communications Unit. “It also gives the community and visitors the opportunity, through various means, to engage with us.” One way it is doing this is through an on-line Engage Kiama Survey. It is seeking to know how you learn about Council news and events (feel free to mention The Bugle), how you would prefer to hear about them and what topics you are most interested in. Cloud storage: how Dropbox can help

Peter Izzard, of Peter Izzard Photography, has just returned from a trip to Iceland. Here’s his postcard: Well, it's been an incredible adventure here in this land of ice & elves… Epic waterfalls, gigantic mountains, volcanoes, lava flows, glaciers, thermal springs, magical horses and, of course, the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. I was fortunate to witness this elusive phenomenon on four of my seven nights here. This image - one of many I'll be editing in the coming months, is of the

Aurora reflected over Jökulsárlón glacial river lagoon. Making the moment even more unique, the glow in the centre is from the erupting Bárdarbunga volcano... There's so much to experience and photograph here - like nirvana for a photographer! Next time I'd like to spend a bit longer and head north, where I hear its quite something... Thanks Iceland, it was worth the trip, and the jetlag. I'll be back. Pete

Local stories and local readers means a great opportunity for local businesses

14 million people in Australia aged 18 years and older actively used cloud computer services in the past six months. That’s about 80 per cent of the adult population. However while cloud computing is something most people do, often they have little comprehension of what they are actually doing. So, what is cloud computing? PC Mag put it well when it called it “a metaphor for the internet”. In simple terms, using cloud computing means storing your files on a place that is not your local hard drive. The most common cloudbased system that people use is webmail, ie. Gmail. If you have an iPad or iPhone, then the photos you take could be stored on Apple’s cloud, called (unsurprisingly) the iCloud. If you have Windows system then you might have your files stored on Microsoft OneDrive. If you use a Kindle, then the book you are reading is stored in the cloud. You’ve put holiday photos on Flickr? That’s the cloud. Has someone, wanting to send you a large file, emailed you a Dropbox link? That’s the ‘cloud’ we will look at more closely now. To get a Dropbox account go to www.dropbox.com and register. Then download a desktop Dropbox application to your tablet and PC. Dropbox runs on Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems and gives you access to your Dropbox directly through a folder on your hard drive. Using Dropbox on your computer is just like using any other folder on your

hard drive, except the files you drag into your Dropbox folder automatically sync online and to any other computers or mobile devices linked to your account. The application runs in the background and automatically keeps your files in sync and backed up online. It's like having the same folder on all of your computers and mobile devices at the same time. The desktop application is really convenient because you never need to manually upload or download changes to your files into your Dropbox folder. The application automatically watches your Dropbox folder and keeps your files in sync for you. Any time you save a change to a file while connected to the internet, that change will sync everywhere you have Dropbox installed. It can be set up so that it automatically uploads your new digital pictures to the cloud. The desktop application even works when you go offline. The next time you're online, it will sync changes made after it left off. The great advantage of using Dropbox is the ability to share files with other people particularly those files that are too big to email. When you create a shared folder and add other people to it, its files will appear in their Dropbox just as they do in yours. Any member of the folder can add, delete, or edit files within that folder if they are given that level of access. You can also just share links to individual files, like photos.
