25th year of the CMRI Quilt Show To mark its 25th year, those associated with the CMRI Quilt Show will enjoy a birthday cake made by Holly Fogarty, the granddaughter of Dorothy Bailey, who founded the Gerringong Committee in 1959. Dorothy's son was born with a congenital heart defect after she contracted Rubella during pregnancy. Research into childhood diseases was desperately needed. In response to a request from Sir Lorimer Dods, a paediatrician and one of the founders of the Children’s Medical Research Institute, she started fundraising with a cake stall raising $50. Since then, the group has raised $1.862 million for the Children’s Medical Research Institute to finance work on childhood cancers, epilepsy, inherited eye diseases, autism, cleft lip and palate and other genetic abnormalities that affect 1 in 20 children. Consultant considering Help to die at home options for old dam site People with a terminal illness who wish to die at home are now more likely to be able to, with the state government giving $55 million over six years to fund specialist home support services for the final days. The Illawarra-Shoalhaven Local Health District is one of the areas to benefit from the funding, which will go to the not-for-profit palliative care specialist care service, Silver Chain. While surveys show 85% of Australians wish to die at home, in NSW only 15-20% do. Australia has the highest percentage of terminally ill
With the decommissioning of Jerrara Dam complete, the question now is what is the best future use for the 52ha (almost 150 acre) site? The dam was transferred to Council by the state government in 1975, bringing with it the associated responsibility of maintaining a prescribed dam despite it not being used as a water supply. Studies required by the NSW Dams Safety Committee to assess the dam’s capacity to cope in a one in a 100 year flood gave Council the options of spending over $3 million to raise the wall or $850,000 to decommission it. “In choosing the latter we have retained a water body, established a new fish passage for the creek and got rid of the ongoing costs of having a prescribed dam,” says Acting General Manager Bryan Whittaker. The remaining small lake is fed by Jerrara Creek and is up to two metres deep. It can be
accessed from Jerrara Arboretum. A consultant has now been engaged to look at the full options for the sustainable future use of the site. Nothing has been ruled out, so consideration will be given to the already mooted ideas of establishing an eco-fishing reserve or making it into a venue for festivals. The report is expected to be completed early in the new year. Council now has only one prescribed dam on its books, the almost forgotten Fountaindale Dam. Faced with the need to spend another $200,000 on studies to see if anything needs to be done to the small dam, Council strongly supported a motion at the recent Local Government NSW conference to seek financial help from the NSW government for all councils who are facing the large costs for these studies and ongoing works. “We were given these
people dying in hospital in the world, and NSW is the highest in all the states. Largely through decades of the work by West Australiabased Silver Chain, almost 60% of terminally ill people in that state die at home. “People often choose to go into hospital to avoid the strain on their families,” says local retired palliative care physican Dr Michael Barbato. “Silver Chain has a tried and tested way of helping to take this pressure off families in the final week so that people can die at home.” Silver Chain has already
Will the Bathers DA make it this time?
Acting General Manager Bryan Whittaker and Mayor Brian Petschler believe the decommissioning is a win:win result. Below: Tranquil Jerrara Creek upstream from the old dam.
The fate of The Bathers development, on the corner of Manning and Bong Bong streets will be considered at a meeting of the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel on Friday 13 November. The proposed mixed use development is to have ground floor retail and seventy-six residential units, with four storeys and a basement. Its size means that Council is not the determining body. When the DA was originally brought before the Panel in July, the developers were sent back to the drawing board to address concerns about its height, privacy and other issues.
dams that we didn’t need, and we are being left with the costs,” says Mayor Brian Petschler. Both men want to acknowledge the patience and goodwill of the nearby Riding for the Disabled during the works process. The organisation will now have access to an extended riding paddock adjacent to the new spillway. There is also the issue of what the area should be known as now. Jerrara Wetlands or Jerrara Reserve are frontrunners.
Ali takes out 3rd Coolangatta Gold Congratulations to Kiama’s reigning Nutri-Grain Ironman series champion Ali Day, who has won this year’s Coolangatta Gold, his third victory at this prestigious ironman event. The 25 year old took out the 41.8km race in a time of 3:42:04, even allowing for a celebratory walk to the finishing line. Ali previously won the 2012 and 2013 events, but didn’t compete in 2014 after suffering from chronic fatigue. The victory is seen as perfect preparation for this years Ironman series, which starts soon. His parents Kim and Ross Day are thrilled with his success after so much hard work. 3
been operating in the Illawarra in a limited way, but the extra funding will help boost the service it can offer. As Gareth Ward MP explains, “The Palliative Care Home Support Program includes personal care during the day, a visit from an evening registered nurse and video support with a night nurse as the patient reaches the end of their life.” When the time comes, terminally ill people can be linked into Silver Chain by Palliative Care Services, based in Port Kembla and Shoalhaven hospitals.
Hospital redevelopment moves ahead A Development Application has been lodged to build a new Community Health Centre on Bonaira St, at the north-west corner of the hospital site. Completion of the $3.2 million facility is necessary before the old Kiama Hospital can be demolished and work on the aged care facility can begin.

Complying developments further fast tracked Changes just made by the NSW Government mean that if your neighbour is planning on doing a complying development you might not hear about it until two days before construction starts. According to the Department of Planning’s website: ‘Complying development is a fast track approval process for straightforward residential, commercial and industrial development. Providing the application meets specific criteria then it can be determined by a council or accredited certifier without the need for a full development application. Examples of complying development include: ♦ renovations to a home ♦ development of a granny flat ♦ building a swimming pool ♦ property extensions (up to two storeys) ♦ building a garage or carport ♦ the construction of a new industrial building ♦ alterations and additions to industrial and commercial buildings ♦ the demolition of a building.’ The changes will: ♦ remove the 14 day pre-approval neighbour notification for residential complying development; and ♦ reduce the pre-construction neighbour notification for new buildings and additions from seven days to two days.

Do you know a potential Showgirl?
New Kiama Showgirl Co-ordinator Fiona Wilkinson is looking for entrants for the 2016 judging. Our Showgirl goes on to represent Kiama at the Agricultural Societies’ Council Zone Final and at The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition. “Showgirl is an important tradition, but the competition is also about finding young ladies who are passionate about and want to be involved in their community,’’ she says. “Our goal is to have our Showgirl represent us throughout the year not just at the Show. “We are looking for people who are passionate about the beautiful place we live in and want to acknowledge both the traditions of the Show and where we are today as a community.’’ The 2015 Showgirl, Kiama Downs university student, Georgie Picton, says the experience had proven very valuable. “I have learnt a lot about public etiquette and public speaking, and I think I have grown a lot through that,’’ she says. Judging criteria includes personality, confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation, speech, knowledge of community and current affairs and involvement in and experience of rural affairs. To be eligible entrants must be women aged over 18 and under 25 years as at 1 May, 2016. The judging of the Showgirl takes place at the Kiama Show Ball on 9 January. Kiama’s kids set to be great cooks Kiama Public School has won a $25,000 custommade Kitchen Kart that will help provide hands-on cooking education for its students. The Nestlé Healthy Active Kids recently partnered with food educators Get Kids Cooking, to give away the fully-equipped Kitchen Kart to one lucky primary school. The mobile kitchen will provide much-needed cooking resources to use in conjunction with their thriving kitchen garden. Parents from across the country were invited to nominate their child’s school to win the Kitchen Kart, which comes complete with cooking tools, equipment, and nutrition lesson plans linked to the Australian Curriculum. There is also access to teacher training and online support to run simple, hands-on cooking classes for the whole school. More than 2,000 parents entered the competition which asked them to explain in 100-words or less why it’s important to get kids involved in cooking. Winning parent Adam Ellis says he’s proud his

Röhn Family to perform in Kiama Kiama is to have the extraordinary opportunity of hearing one of Europe’s finest family of classical musicians playing in the intimate setting of Christ Church. Ana de la Vega’s marriage to Daniel Röhn is bringing his famous family to town. The happy couple will be playing a concert with Daniel’s father, mother and sister in Ana’s home town to celebrate the occasion. The program of Mozart, Debussy and Beethoven will be the same that has been devised for the Canberra International Music Festival, which will be their only other performance on their visit to Australia. Daniel performed in the church with Ana in March this year to much acclaim. She is a renowned flautist and he is a brilliant young violinist more used to playing in the world’s leading concert halls. Daniel’s father, Andreas, is one of the leading concert masters of our time and has been professor of violin in Hamburg for twenty years. His mother, Kerstin, has been a pianist of note since her debut in Stockholm in 1969, and sister Anje was recently guest violinist for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

At the KHS Class of 2005 reunion My daughter Gabrielle McCann recently celebrated her engagement to Alexander Hayden at Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club. The night was a wonderful gathering of friends and family, who were there to not only congratulate the happy couple, but to also welcome them home after eighteenth months travelling and working in Europe. Many relatives and friends travelled great distances to attend the party and fell in love with Kiama and the surrounding area. The weather showed off Kiama at its best and visitors were very much impressed with the beauty of our natural environment. Catering on the night, by the Little Blowhole Cafe, was raved about by everyone present and the guests danced the night away to the rocking sounds of the John Littrich Band. Thanks to Jess, Brynn and Chris who served on the night and everyone who helped make the event such a wonderful success. Congratulations Gab and Zandy! Wendy McCann
Kyria Weir, Kristen Phillips, Jodie Schofield, Sarah Baker and Lauren Mackie were amongst the old schoolmates who got together at the Kiama Leagues Club for their reunion recently. The fall foliage was spectacular in Southwest Wisconsin where I spent most of October. This picture is on our farm and the two main trees, a red maple and a white pine, were planted by Aussies: my stepson and grandaughter. The farm is near Spring Green, famous for being the location of Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's home and school. Check out the novel Loving Frank by Nancy Horan to get a taste for the scandalous side of the famous architect (secrets Spring Green always knew). I used to ride horses on the Taliesin grounds and sneak midnight swims in the private pool. This corner of Wisconsin is in the ‘driftless’ area which

means the land was not glaciated in the last ice age. So while the land nearby was flattened by masses of ice, this region remains steep and hilly. Forget about getting a mobile signal. The valleys are good for the dairy herds, and except for the different trees and lack of ocean, there is a Jamberoo feel to the countryside. With all that going for it, Spring Green is on the tourism track and worth a stop if you're on a ramble through the midwest. While there's no ocean, there is the wide brown Wisconsin River which flows into the Mississippi not too far to the west of us. I feel so lucky to have so much natural beauty in both my countries. Forty-one teams comprising over 500 relayers were registered for the day. Currently over $80,000 has been banked to provide vital funds to support the Cancer Council. The Relay provides a community focus to Celebrate with those who have survived cancer, to remember those who have passed with cancer and to fight back against cancer. During the ceremonies our guest speakers, Brenda Thomas, Lenice Heffernan and Dr Russel Pearson gave us information ,inspiration and hope. Some very clear and strong messages were communicated to the relayers. The Relay For Life Committee would like to thank all those who participated in the Relay. It was wonderful to soak up the festival like atmosphere. The emphasis this year was on living a healthy lifestyle and the Health Passport was a worthwhile activity with many relayers participating in the six health stations available on the day. The Committee appreciates the assistance provided by the Kiama and Minnamurra Lions Clubs. We thank them for helping to set up and pack up the Relay and provide much needed nourishment throughout. Kiama Council has always been a strong supporter of Relay and we thank the Council staff and the Councillors for that support Many local businesses provided sponsorship and support that contributed greatly to the Relay’s ability to fundraise. We also had a massive amount of food and drinks donated to keep the relayers nourished and hydrated. The Committee appreciates the contribution made by these businesses. The relayers enjoyed the variety of entertainment provided and we thank the performers for their contribution. Kiama is a fantastic community and we hope to see you all back in October next year to help the NSW Cancer Council’s fight against cancer. Sincerely, Kiama Relay for Life Committee
